Good evening!

Trying to get ahead of everything, as I know tomorrow will be a real rush with people signing up, etc.

Here's the spreadsheet with many thanks to the ever lovely @AthelstaneTheUnready for her sterling efforts

@ifeelfat

Well, of course, the stuff I post here always assumes there are no specific medical conditions that would contradict me! Grin

Sorry to hear this is what you're suffering from. I've had a quick Google, and it doesn't sound very pleasant at all. But it would appear that eating a low carb diet is going to help you. I very much hope so, anyway Flowers

Hmm.. The photos didn't attach to my previous post.

Plus MN is telling me I haven't posted on any threads recently. Wonder what I've done to mess things up Confused

I had this problem!

It only happened when I use mumsnet via wireless internet. Seems to work fine via 4g

ShagMeRiggins · 29/05/2020 18:44

Every time a poster says the photos didn’t attach I look at it and think, I’m, yes they did.

Quite likely because I’m reading it on delay.

ifeelfat I’ve learned some new things today, thanks for the information—it’s very interesting.

CalendulaAndRoses · 29/05/2020 18:55

quick question - is coconut milk allowed? DP says it says around 2g carb on the can...

BIWI · 29/05/2020 19:07

Are you talking about cartons of milk alternatives, or tins of coconut milk for cooking?

If the latter, none of them are that low in carbs as far as I can see

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 29/05/2020 19:07

Patapouf - my DP boought me a bag of those to try. They’re a bit of a shock to start with, but once you know what to expect they’re pretty good!! My biggest beef with LC is the lack of crispy things. So these really fill a gap. If you like cheese (I’m not a huge fan, maybe why I struggled with the idea!) they’re perfect.

BIWI · 29/05/2020 19:12

Sorry - I stand corrected, and your DH is right! Although it does depend on the brand

Here are the cal/carb counts per 100ml:

Sainsbury's. 191 cals/5.7g carbs
KTC 109 cals/2.2g carbs
Dunn's River 86 cals/1.1g carbs
Tropical Sun 129 cals/1.8g carbs
Chaokoh 186 cals/2.2g carbs
Amoy 172 cals/3.3g carbs

OP posts:
CalendulaAndRoses · 29/05/2020 19:14

Thanks @BIWI - prawn and coconut curry it is then Smile we have the lidl one which is 2.2g per 400ml I think (he says) so about 9 for the can. He will eat more than half I am sure

MrsKoala · 29/05/2020 19:23

Colouring- after I have got to my target weight (11st 10lb) I always put on 4lb and settle at my body’s happy weight of (which believe it or not is a size 12 for me because I am half yeti). I’m happy maintaining that on up to 100g of carbs a day (usually from sweet potatoes, carrots, other veg, and legumes and occasionally pasta/rice/spuds/bread etc) and exercise 3 times a week (I don’t drive much so walk about 5 miles a day too). Also I only drink white wine or vodka and soda. I monitor my weight and if I put on any I cut back straight away. That way it doesn’t get too hard to lose.

I’ve been lucky in that I’ve never needed to lose more than about a stone and a half and now I think I only put on the 8lb because of lockdown. Everyone will be different tho, but that’s just the way I do it.

Anyway, cons of strong painkillers and muscle relaxants are horrendous nausea and feeling dopey. Pros are I can’t face eating much and have had time to sit and go thru some recipe books for inspiration. Rick Stein’s Venice to Istanbul has got loads of lovely recipes perfect for this woe. Particularly a Turkish breakfast called Menumen which is like spicy scrambled eggs. There is also a poached eggs with yogurt and chilli dressing which I’m looking forward to trying along with lots of delicious meat and fish dishes, some which can be easily adapted if necessary.

Today has been; yogurt, chicken and veg soup and 2 frankfurters and cucumber.

ShagMeRiggins · 29/05/2020 19:44

MrsKoala your maintenance description was very interesting but your Stein book description was downright seductive.

colouring I think the humble potato is probably the best from the list you mentioned. If for no other reason than it’s a real food.

BIWI · 29/05/2020 19:47

... and if you have to go for potatoes, new potatoes are the best option as they're lower in carbs. Avoid jacket potatoes like the plague!

Had a day today that Atkins would approve of - plans went a bit awry.

"lunch" I wasn't hungry so only had a few pieces of bacon when DP made cooked breakfast. Then tea-time, we had steak and pepper stuffed with mushrooms, courgettes and roule. Except the pepper went a bit wrong, at which point I gave up and went without veg.

So, I put that at about zero carbs.

ExShield · 29/05/2020 20:00

I realised, this is the first time I’ve ever tried to lose weight for me. I am 50.

ShagMeRiggins · 29/05/2020 20:08

I’d like to know how peppers go wrong...

As for ExShield, have you never had to lose weight before or just resisted dieting?

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2020 20:12

Weirdest experience today, I got up stupidly early, went for a run so by 12 I was famished. Waiting for my boiled eggs I took some reduced stock out of the fridge, heated it up and had a bit. Most delicious substance in the world. I was over the moon. Ate my eggs, had lots of stock left. It was just meh.

When the carb and sugar cravings go away, I think your body actually remembers what cravings are for. I clearly needed what was in the stock, then I didn't after I ate.

ExShield · 29/05/2020 20:13

I’ve yo-yo dieted for my ENTIRE life.Sad
My mum put me on the early version of slimfast at 15, and has been on about my weight since I was born. I’ve lost weight for weddings and parties but almost exclusively so I look better and might get my mum’s approval.

This time, I’m doing it because my knees are shot.

Puppermint · 29/05/2020 20:23

Was craving an ice cold gin and tonic earlier so was in a bit of a flap. But stayed strong and took the dog out for a nice long walk instead. Now sitting here with a glass of san peligrino and lemon wedges feeling rather chuffed with myself. Think I'm past the witching hour now so should be ok.

Today has been pretty good - 805 cals and 14g carbs. Undecided about whether or not to count cals tomorrow as we are having a BBQ and I don't want to have to scrimp.

ilovecherries · 29/05/2020 20:26

Food today was:

Breakfast - none
Lunch - two poached eggs on smooshed avocado (again)
Dinner - fish kebabs and green salad
Snack - exploded baby bel

Water drunk, now about to play board games in the garden before crawling into the sleeping bag in the tent. I’m not sure if I will do 16:8 tomorrow or not. The call of breakfast cooked outside might win - will still only have two meals though.

colouringindoors · 29/05/2020 20:27

Thanks prettybird, mrs koala and others that all makes sense. I have 2 kids at home and try to eat what they eat and not call this a diet as I'm v aware of impact of dieting mums on dcs weight and body image.... (even harder as they're still at home fue to lockdown...) need to get my head round the basically no pasta bread potatoes long term. It's been interesting the last couple if days though. I haven't actually enjoyed the carbs particularly. With the one exception of ds' homemade Red velvet birthday cake Grin.

Still find it extrsordinary that after 2 days of eating "normally" I've gained half a stone. I didn't eat that much - pretty sure the weight of the food I ate was less. Anyhow. I went from almost 12st to 11st. My ultimate aim is 10st so after tomorrow will do my best to get back on the wagon....

ShagMeRiggins · 29/05/2020 20:30

Sorry ExShield, I misunderstood your post. The “for me” part passed me by.

Very glad you’re doing this for you now.

BrassicaBabe · 29/05/2020 20:34

@ExShield yep, I'm with you there! I think I was about 18 when I first went to weight watchers. I am 47. I think cabbage soup diet was probably a low!

I've had lows. The best one was when I was a student in my 20s, walking heaps and couldn't afford to eat!! I lived on tuna mayo sandwiches. Tuna bought from the pub I worked at in catering packs.

But, I'm pretty sure that LCHF has kept me at a weight I'm pretty much happy with for 2.5 years!

Rest day and 10K steps has turned into 3k steps! Desk job. 5k run planned for tomorrow!

MrsKoala · 29/05/2020 20:39

Honestly Shagme (haven’t said that in a long time) it’s worth a look for recipes. I’m just going thru his Mediterranean Escapes and that looks promising too (just on the baked Greek omelette mmmmmm).

I don’t usually low carb in the Summer because I like summer fruit too much (forgot to mention when I maintain I allow summer fruit like berries, peaches, rhubarb and melon). But needs must and all. So while I have a decent LC repertoire it’s very wintery, and I was thinking last night, I should look towards the Med and Middle East for inspiration. If anything is successful I’ll share the recipe.
