Good evening!

Trying to get ahead of everything, as I know tomorrow will be a real rush with people signing up, etc.

Here's the spreadsheet with many thanks to the ever lovely @AthelstaneTheUnready for her sterling efforts

Awww! Well he’s lucky he’s cute Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2020 00:32

There's not enough fat on that to eat. Lean protein just like I believe we established Idris Elba was many moons ago.

Mark Ruffelo on the other hand...

whitershadeofpale · 27/05/2020 01:46

Not quite sure @BIWI but that’s what MFP says.

I think because I didn’t have any milk, only had one main meal and it was pretty much fat and protein. All my carbs came from spinach and lettuce with just a vinaigrette dressing (home made). My omelette was made with double cream, butter, eggs, haddock and cheese.

I’m getting in this........ I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been as an adult at 10 stone And my cravings for carbs and sugar has gone through the roof. Living with my OH who is a toast monster is hard, but I need to get this sorted out. Off to buy crap loads of veg tomorrow and a spiriliser from Amazon!

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2020 06:06

Quick question. When we go to Bootcampus Ordinarius, can we still do 16:8? I know it's normally three meals but presumably it won't matter.

Puppermint · 27/05/2020 06:18

Oooh I would quite like Idris Elba on a plate MrsTerryPratchet. I could always put a bit of extra butter on him?! Grin

Awful night’s sleep here. Weird dreams, tossing and turning and about a dozen weeks Blush Not boding well for a day at work. Plus I’m supposed to be up doing a strength session right now but CBA!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/05/2020 07:09

morning! first nightmares here too, puppermint, people coming to break into house...

back later, cat on arms

Yes, if you want to continue (or increase) fasting that's entirely up to you. Given all the reading I've been doing about it, I'm actually considering making it a key part of Bootcamp Light.

I'm hesitant about making it part of Bootcamp simply because I think there's so much else going on for those who are new to low carbing that it might just make things too difficult.

Bit spooky reading about your weird dreams!

I was up early and enjoyed watering the garden in the early sun, set me up for the day. Ready for day 3

BIWI · 27/05/2020 07:44

PS am loving Bootcampus Ordinarius Grin

Sounds like everyone is doing really well! Especially Beery's dog!

Good day here yesterday apart from a big fail with the exercise; I'm finding it really hard because I'm working from home with with toddler. Even if we go for a walk I'm unlikely to burn anything as she is so slow/distracted. Trying to keep on top of housework and gardening so hope that counts for something.

What's on the menu today? Here it's
L - turkey and lettuce salad
D - BBQ sausages and coleslaw
Snack - FF greek yoghurt

I've woken up (after some strange dreams) and not even a panger of hunger so that's good. I love this hot weather, enjoy all the BBQs and salads and eating outside. Just wish I'd booked the week off work to enjoy it. Also, looking chubby in my summer clothes is a good motivation.

Stress levels likely to rise later though and there's my trigger so I'll have to watch that. Have a good day everyone.

Freetodowhatiwant · 27/05/2020 08:09

Thanks @BIWI in regards to the being hungry. I will try to stick with the strict week if I can. I don’t eat meat- but eat fish - and am not a very enthusiastic cook. I think I will bulk things out today with some cauliflower rice or mash. That shepherds pie recipe sounds nice, wondering if I could do it with Quorn.

BIWI · 27/05/2020 08:17

How about making a fish pie instead?

You could try it with Quorn, but I don't - personally - like Quorn, and don't really think it's great for Bootcamp as it's so heavily processed. However, if you don't eat meat I get that you might want to consider it. If you do though, please check the carb/calorie counts first.

BIWI · 27/05/2020 08:22

From Wiki:

Quorn is made from the soil mould Fusarium venenatum strain PTA-2684 (previously misidentified as the parasitic mould Fusarium graminearum[35]). The fungus is grown in continually oxygenated water in large, otherwise sterile fermentation tanks. Glucose and fixed nitrogen are added as a food for the fungus, as are vitamins and minerals to improve the food value of the product. The resulting mycoprotein is then extracted and heat-treated to remove excess levels of RNA. Previous attempts to produce such fermented protein foodstuffs were thwarted by excessive levels of DNA or RNA; without the heat treatment, purines, found in nucleic acids, are metabolised by humans to produce uric acid, which can lead to gout.

The product is dried and mixed with egg albumen, which acts as a binder. It is then textured, giving it some of the grained character of meat, and pressed into a mince resembling ground beef; forms resembling chicken breasts, meatballs, and turkey roasts; or chunks resembling diced chicken breast. In these forms, Quorn has a varying colour and a mild flavour resembling the imitated meat product, and is suitable for use as a replacement for meat in many dishes, such as stews and casseroles.

The final Quorn product is high in protein and dietary fibre and is low in saturated fat. It contains less dietary iron than most meats and the manufacturers have not released much information about additives they use to make Quorn resemble meat. Quorn is considered acceptable in small amounts for babies over nine months old but should be introduced gradually. The high fibre and low calorie content is better for adults than babies and too much fibre can cause flatulence. The salt content should be checked before giving Quorn to babies since the salt content varies among products.

... which is why I don't like it (personally) and prefer not to recommend/endorse it for Bootcamp!

@BIWI I’m curious about the reading you’re doing. Is it in regard to calories? I ask because I’ve eaten lchf on and off for years but never ‘properly’ iykwim, ie, eaten the right stuff but now, I realise because I’m calorie counting, probably much too much.

Although calorie counting for life might not be sustainable, re-educating the stomach and brain as to what’s a normal amount might help.

BIWI · 27/05/2020 08:32

@Ifeelfat

I'm always reading stuff! Mostly about low carbing, but more widely about weight loss and what's going on in more recent research/recommendations.

Two key sources - firstly Dr Jason Fung's book The Obesity Code, where he ultimately concludes that cutting carbs (rather than fat) is a more healthy way to lose weight - but also that calories do come into play. He doesn't endorse dieting methods based on calorie counting, but does conclude that our overall calorie count is something we need to consider. (I'm paraphrasing this from memory)

The other source is Dr Michael Mosley and all the work he's been doing that has led to The Fast 800 diet - based on research conducted by The University of Newcastle in treating diabetic patients. Controlling calorie intake is linked to reversal of diabetes, and there's also evidence that a lower calorie life can prolong life - we certainly appear to need fewer calories as we get older.

The idea for introducing calorie counting into this week was not because I want to continue that with Bootcamp in the future ("hurrah for that!", I hear everyone cry) but because I wanted this first week to be a short, sharp shock back into focusing on what we're eating, as I know that many of us have been over-indulging. It's also very easy - as PP have attested - to eat a lot of calories when you're low carbing. While I believe there's a definite calorie advantage when you do LCHF, it's no bad thing for people to consider just what they're eating.

Also I've been drinking so much bloody fruit juice recently and that's jam packed with sugar. I'd like to cut down on that too. Too much sugar gives me headaches but I still won't stop.

I was like that too with my daughter. Obsessed with ice cold grapefruit juice.

felippertyfeck · 27/05/2020 08:50

Hi @AthelstaneTheUnready! Morning all! Trying to add my name to the spreadsheet but it won't let me. Please can someone help? Apologies if there is a solution to this in the thread I'm gradually working my way through it :) Think i'm ready to start the fasting and calorie count today, low carbed for last two days. Feeling motivated!

MrsKoala · 27/05/2020 08:55

Hi @BIWI I asked upthread (but not sure if it got lost in all the posts) if Tofu was allowed? Thanks.

ilovecherries · 27/05/2020 08:56

Although I’m an IF advocate now, and even at the weekends when I’m not so strict with it, I still only eat two meals a day, I think 3 years ago, when I had 80 lbs to lose, it would have been too much for me right at the beginning. 3 weeks in, it was starting to happen naturally, but what got me through the first two weeks was ‘if you are gingery, eat anything from the allowed foods’. It was the first time for decades I hadn’t been constantly hungry.

BIWI · 27/05/2020 08:57

Yes, but just make sure you take into account the carbs - it's not carb-free like fresh meat

I am also sitting on the wild dreams bench this morning. Woke up knackered after a night of slaying dragons. Not nightmares, but very strange dreams!
