Jan '20 - Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Ready for Bootcamp Light?

Welcome to the third week of Low Carb Bootcamp. As always, log your weigh-in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you're happy with Bootcamp then you can choose to stick with it. Or if you want to relax a little and incorporate some fruit, nuts/seeds and dark chocolate then check out the Bootcamp Light rule changes on this thread and in the next post. Or you can do a hybrid: Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

It's really common for weight loss to stop briefly around weeks 3-5, some people even gain a little weight. Google "week 3 stall" and you will see post after post from people on Atkins, Fast800, keto, after bariatric surgery all asking why they haven't lost weight this week. The simple answer is that you are losing fat but retaining water. The stall will last a week or two and then your weight loss will resume its bumpy path downwards.

I've attached a typical weight loss graph which shows a brief stall at week 4. As you can see, weight loss is not linear; it varies from week to week but the overall trend (shown by the black line) is ever downwards hence our saying that "the trend is your friend." If you follow the rules you can expect an average weight loss of 0.5 to 2lb per week.

Ate out last night in Coast to Coast with dh and ds. Wasn't 100% HFLC but I made the best choices I could: halloumi fries (but were in panko crumbs) while dh and ds shared nachos, followed by a Caesar salad (which also had an egg and sardines) minus the croutons, all washed down by tasty glasses of water Halo

Also did 19,000 steps getting to and from the house we're staying in Shock My best friend has a house for sale in Aberdeen so we were doing a mutual favour checking it out and doing a meter reading for her she lives in North Wales and ds decided he'd prefer to sleep in his own bed the night before a game rather than decanting to the sofa to give us his bed.

venusandmars · 01/02/2020 10:40

Had an unexpected 24 hour water fast courtesy of a trip to A&E, an overnight admission and the dire hospital food. It may continue for longer...

Mimosa1 · 01/02/2020 12:22

Oh no @venusandmars I hope you feel better soon Thanks

I've had a mini 1.5 lbs woosh too but going to a dinner party tonight at very new friends and I don't know what they are cooking so will have to do the best I can and hope it sticks to Monday...

prettybird · 01/02/2020 12:26

Oh no Venus - I hope you get better soon.

Rshard · 01/02/2020 13:10

Hope you feel better soon venus

DiscontentedWoman · 01/02/2020 13:34

Venus hope you are ok!

BIWI · 01/02/2020 13:41

Oh no @venusandmars! Hope you're recovered soon and it's not something too horrible (although A&E plus admission would suggest you haven't just got a cold Sad)

Hi @ MrsBertBibby it’s adequate rather than nice. You wouldn’t see it as a toast replacement for instance (I’d say gluten free bread is much better for a coeliac who isn’t LC). But it’s brilliant as a wrap or pizza base every so often. I got their slimmer January saver pack this time which includes southern fried no carb “bread”crumbs too. Which I’m going to coat chicken fillets with and fry this week. Will post whether it’s decent or not. It’s certainly very LC and also low calorie and not much crap in it either. If anyone wants a code from me, happy to be PMd, I hadn’t spotted they do that.
B: two boiled eggs, spinach
L: pork coleslaw avo salad
D: roast chicken with FLGV I expect. Rest of the family are having cheesecake so thought i might mix some cream cheese, blueberries, flax and dust with cocoa to make a vaguely equivalent pudding as it’s Saturday. Any other “pudding” idea? I tend not to and often have yoghurt for breakfast but would be nice sometimes

waspfig · 01/02/2020 14:00

@Harveywoo I found this yesterday that I thought I'd try tonight. I've got 85% chocolate so hoping it will be fairly low carb overall?

BIWI · 01/02/2020 14:16

@Harveywoo have you checked out the Bootcamp recipe threads? There are some nice dessert ideas in those. They're stickied at the top of the Bootcamp topic.

SayrraT · 01/02/2020 15:40

All this talk of wraps etc has reminded me of the 'wraps' I like to make.

Mix up one egg with a tablespoon of oil and add a sprinkle of ground linseed. Fry then turn out and leave to cool.

It's like a very thin omelette. The linseed gives it a bit of strength and stops it looking like a thin omelette!

prettybird · 01/02/2020 16:17

The dessert (and other sweet things) thread isn't stickied but if you scroll down the Low-carb Bootcamp topic, you'll find it.

Well, my trip up to Aberdeen was worth it: ds' team won and he got Man of the Match with special mention of his "flawless kicking performance" (scored 17 out of the 27 points: 1 try, 2 penalties and 3 conversions! Smile) Grin

Now in the clubhouse drinking copious amounts of black coffee to warm up and pints of water no ice Wink to keep my water intake up.

So far today I've had 1 spicy Pepperami. I have 2 Babybels in my bag and a packet of Golden Pork Crunch to keep me going when they bring out the sausage rolls at half time in the Ireland-Scotland game.

StuntNun · 01/02/2020 17:15

Harveywoo my favourite low carb dessert is Greek yogurt topped with raspberries then a dollop of extra thick or whipped cream then grated/finely chopped dark chocolate sprinkled over. It's utterly indulgent. If you're making it for non-low carbers then you could stick a meringue nest right at the bottom. I make it in stemmed glass bowls for the layered effect.

Hosting fondue this evening. Wish me luck.

Loads of LCHF on offer (steak, scallops, prawns, four types of fish, broccoli, cauliflower, courgette, peppers, mushrooms). There’s a cheese fondue and a beef broth fondue. There’s more, but not for me (tempura batter fondue, plus carrots, potatoes, and a chocolate fountain for dessert)

Anyway plenty for me to eat so I have no excuses.

But a piece of baguette in cheese will tempt me like Lucifer himself. Cauliflower, ho!

RobinHobb · 01/02/2020 18:31

@cheddargorgeous
Good to have some company in being a sugar addict! I'm managing so far; longest I've been without sugar but haven't found it too hard actually. Crave sugar far more than bread etc

I'm determined to shift the weight so have ditched the prosecco! Let's see.,Still struggling today eat more, have kids all weekend on my own and it's hard to find time.

Drank lots of water!

RobinHobb · 01/02/2020 19:28

@ShagMeRiggins
Like lucifer himself...!!
Yes I made my kids while chocolate covered rice crispie things today and oh the temptation to just ear one tiny tiny tiny little square of white chocolate....it was HARD!

Harveywoo · 01/02/2020 21:12

Thanks all and @waspfig that looks lush!

Doilooklikeatourist · 01/02/2020 22:04

Gone away for the weekend .. and over to the dark side ...
back on Tuesday , will be as sensible as possible .. though a deli for lunch named Crwst tomorrow is on the cards
Will keep up with the water ,water , water and lots of walking

BrassicaBabe · 01/02/2020 23:30

Shag have you got recipes for those 2 fondues you can share? They sound lovely! And my last cheese fondue was a bit of a fail. (Runny at the top, sludge at the bottom).

Today was the first day I felt like a bit of a freak. I was doing an outdoor course thing. I knew lunch was going to be carby. So grabbed a few snacks on my way out of the door. Everyone was tucking into home made wholesome soups (one with potatoes and one with pasta) and home made brown bread while I ate stinky pepperami and snack cheese. Happy enough with my choices on the fly but....

The tonight a pub meal I was prepared for. Cheese/ bacon burger but extra salad, som coleslaw and no chips. Something in that has bloated me right up!! There was a bit of dressing on the salad. Might be that or the coleslaw Hmm

BrassicaBabe · 01/02/2020 23:51

Reading crappy keto recipes on FB. Saw pics of scotch eggs. The lamb mince coming in my Tesco order popped into my my mind. So I googled "lamb scotch egg". There are loads of recipes out there. Although would need to adapt the crumb coating. One was for morrocan. Def going to give something similar a go this week

StuntNun · 02/02/2020 06:08

Brassica you can use smashed up pork scratchings or pork crunch instead of breadcrumbs on scotch eggs.

HouseTornado · 02/02/2020 06:59

Quick daily meal check in. Nearly cracked last night as really fancied rice and noodles and chips (not together, just carbs!), but managed to stay strong. I had a handful of Brazil nuts instead...

B: Avocado mayo
L: Cheese omelette and salad, smoked trout
D: Not sure, might just have cheese and cucumber!

3l water etc

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/02/2020 07:21

Might be the coleslaw, Brassica - I had a tub of it last BC after a fairly meat-heavy few days, and my digestive system was hysterical for about 24 hours. Think it was the unexpected incoming amounts of raw cabbage.

waspfig · 02/02/2020 07:24

Yesterday's meal check in:
B bacon and eggs
L chicken soup (at children's attraction - def some hidden carbs but the best option available) no bread!
D grilled chicken, leftover cauli shawarma, halloumi, spinach salad
S handful of pecans, couple of m and s rollitos

Didn't get round to making the choc mousse in the end so will have tonight.

Today the Xmas ham is defrosting ready for Sunday dinner. Long story short, we accidentally froze the Xmas ham and cooked a pork joint instead on Xmas eve Confused (in my defence, they looked identical in the butchers box) Grin

B coconut porridge
L probs just cucumber and pate
D Xmas ham, celeriac, broccoli cheese and more green veg
