Jan '20 - Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Ready for Bootcamp Light?

StuntNun · 27/01/2020 05:57

Welcome to the third week of Low Carb Bootcamp. As always, log your weigh-in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you're happy with Bootcamp then you can choose to stick with it. Or if you want to relax a little and incorporate some fruit, nuts/seeds and dark chocolate then check out the Bootcamp Light rule changes on this thread and in the next post. Or you can do a hybrid: Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

It's really common for weight loss to stop briefly around weeks 3-5, some people even gain a little weight. Google "week 3 stall" and you will see post after post from people on Atkins, Fast800, keto, after bariatric surgery all asking why they haven't lost weight this week. The simple answer is that you are losing fat but retaining water. The stall will last a week or two and then your weight loss will resume its bumpy path downwards.

I've attached a typical weight loss graph which shows a brief stall at week 4. As you can see, weight loss is not linear; it varies from week to week but the overall trend (shown by the black line) is ever downwards hence our saying that "the trend is your friend." If you follow the rules you can expect an average weight loss of 0.5 to 2lb per week.

I’ve just logged what I’ve eaten today into MFP and I’m getting more protein 73 compared with fat 48. Carbs was 16.

Pink you have to take the calories into account when working out macros:

16g carbs x 4 = 64 cals
73g protein x 4 = 292 cals
48g fat x 9 = 432 cals
Total = 788 calories

Your macros: carbs 8%, protein 37%, fat 55%
Ideal macros are roughly carbs 5-10%, protein 25-40% protein, 60%+ fat.

So you're a little low in fat but not far off, it would only take one tablespoon of olive oil to get you to a 60% fat macro. And if you're losing weight then there's no need to make any changes. There is a problem that we can't accurately measure your fat macro because the body fat you're burning counts towards it. So if you're losing, say a pound a week, that would be another 50g / 500 calories to be added on to your macros.

Yum Smile I'd totally forgotten how delicious coconut porridge is!

Not sure of measurements (I use a little cup) but I think it's around 50g ground almonds, 50g desiccated coconut, 3rd of a can of coconut milk and vanilla to taste.

Cook it all up and its a delicious (occasional) breakfast for when you are fed up with eggs!

Also, 1 lb down this morning Grin

HouseTornado · 31/01/2020 07:10

Morning all. 1 pound off and hoping for 2 by Monday, but I know Week 3 can be a tricky week. I'm drinking so much water!

Food today:

B: Buttered scrambled eggs
L: Cauliflower cheese muffins
D: Thai green prawn curry with tons of FGLV

A lake of water, coffee, herbal tea.

I want to start exercising more next week. Any runners here?

MrsBertBibby · 31/01/2020 07:46

Ouf feel like shit this morning. Night of stupidity, too many macadamia and zero water. Appalling head now.

CheddarGorgeous · 31/01/2020 07:58

Found DH cooking in the kitchen last night accompanied by a glass of red wine and some posh crisps so I confess I had a glug from his glass and a handful of crisps. It was just such a warm, inviting scene.

Today:

B - porridge (fail again) topped with natural yoghurt and milled seeds
L - mixed salad prepped for train journey
D - not sure yet, will be away in London on my lonesome so planning a low carb hotel room picnic (my favourite way to eat) and another trip to the cinema probably.

Sorry about the porridge. I can't get DH to reliably remember that I'm not eating it at the moment and can't bring myself to throw food away.

Teapotdespot · 31/01/2020 08:27

Morning all Grin

I’m on the road again for work, 300 miles from home and expected to sustain myself on meeting catering for 2 days Hmm

I hit peak low carber yesterday when I ATE THE FILLING FROM A SANDWICH AND LEFT THE BREAD. Shock

Failed last night though, I’m in the middle of nowhere without a car so the only place to eat was a McDonalds, and I had chicken nuggets which I thought was fine but it turns out are fairly carby Angry.. if I don’t lose this week again I probably deserve it, but at least it wasn’t fries and a shake to boot Blush

StuntNun · 31/01/2020 08:59

Too late now Teapot but McDonalds will happily make you a bunless burger. If you order through the touchscreens you can see all your options, sometimes you can add extra bacon, cheese etc. Also the paper sheets on the trays have all the nutrition printed on the back so you can easily see carb counts, allergens etc.

@Teapotdespot I feel your pain. I used to travel a lot with work and I lived on crap food. I was miserable and unhealthy and put on many lbs. I was very well paid though Grin

I would like to think I would make better choices now as I'm older and wiser but I know how hard it can be to find healthy options.

Now I am based in one place (mostly) I am much healthier with much less disposable income.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 31/01/2020 09:20

Having been the same weight on the scales for the last 10 days or so - seriously, the same weight every day, no variation by even 1/4lb - I decided to swap metrics and took some measurements on Monday as well.

As of this morning - just 5 days later - I still weigh exactly the same, but have lost 1" from my bust, 1/2" from my waist, and a whopping 2" from my hips.

Same weight, smaller person Grin

At this rate, I'll be dragging the redundant clothes out of the wardrobe soon, to see if any fit properly again

ShagMeRiggins · 31/01/2020 09:42

I decided to swap metrics

Yesssss!!!

Mimosa1 · 31/01/2020 09:50

Hips! Hips! @shagmeriggins!! GrinBlushlol

PinkSubscriber · 31/01/2020 10:17

Stuntnun thank you for the maths. If I’m not far out I guess I won’t be tucking into the tub of clotted cream that I’ve just bought.

BIWI · 31/01/2020 10:49

Why not, @PinkSubscriber?! Grin

Rayna37 · 31/01/2020 12:12

HouseTornado quite a few runners on here I think! I ran my first only half marathon during the May BC last year but am just running on weekends this winter as lacking motivation to get out in the dark and wet, plus I rejoined the gym and have discovered a love of pre-work swims which is easier to fit in around toddler DS and a DH who is marathon training. Mostly loving parkrun and maybe a towpath run on a Sunday.

ShagMeRiggins · 31/01/2020 12:14

Hips! Hips!

Thank goodness. You don’t want to know where my mind went trying to picture your sore hood...

HouseTornado · 31/01/2020 12:25

Thanks, Rayna37! A half marathon? Wow!

I'm already swimming, but feel a need to do a bit more cardio. I'll start the C25K next week, I think, as I work from home a few days so can probably fit it in...(though it looks miserable outside right now).

Rayna37 · 31/01/2020 12:55

HouseTorando Good luck! I'll admit my swim technique is so bad it barely rates as cardio while my heart rate goes through the roof at even a mild jog! I've been disgraced in the pool the last two Fridays by a girl who is literally twice as fast as me yet about 6 months pregnant.

Has anyone read the Charlie Spedding book "Stop feeding us lies"? I haven't yet but listened to an interview with him about it yesterday marathontalk.com/shows/episode-525-charlie-spedding/ (starts about 30 mins in). DH has though and recommended; he said it's an easy read and great summary of the current thinking on this WoE and related/wider health issues so might be a good intro for those new to all this.

HouseTornado · 31/01/2020 13:01

My swimming is a similar level, Rayna37! More bobbing than swimming - hence the running!

RobinHobb · 31/01/2020 13:15

I am so utterly stalled
This is always a dangerous place for me; I lose motivation and then think I'm not losing any weight anyway why not eat that slice of cake etc
Any tips to break stall please? It's been ten days, one slight blip in between

SayrraT · 31/01/2020 13:24

robin have you taken measurements? Or what about NSV you can think of?

Mimosa1 · 31/01/2020 13:47

Oh FFS, out for dinner with my dad last night and the couple next door thought a) that I was his girlfriend and b) I was pregnant.

RobinHobb · 31/01/2020 14:04

@SayrraT
Hmmmm no I didn't measure to start with, so don't really have a relative basis to compare. Clothes are looser but that is probably the initial weight loss...
sorry to be ignorant - what is nsv?
Thank you

CheddarGorgeous · 31/01/2020 14:13

Nooooooo @RobinHobb don't give up. I am a fellow staller. If I can do it so can you.

I sat in a meeting with a basket of pain au chocolats this morning and even though the scales are sticking a resolute two fingers up to me at the moment I silently told them to fuck off.

RobinHobb · 31/01/2020 14:34

@cheddargorgeous
I'm holding on!!!!
I want to look good this summer and wear normal clothes like shorts and dresses without worrying about my bulges.
But my weakest points are the kids (4yo and 2yo) meals. Always have to taste to check/temp although now avoided doing that. I used to use myself as a human bin for their leftovers too... have stopped that.
I've been to spin class this morning
Had a cup of coffee
A cup of tea
Two scrambled eggs with bacon bits
Sigh
I just need the scales to move a little bit so I know I'm going in the right direction still

CheddarGorgeous · 31/01/2020 15:10

@RobinHobb Scales are bastards. Listen to your clothes instead Wink
