Jan '20 - Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Ready for Bootcamp Light?

Welcome to the third week of Low Carb Bootcamp. As always, log your weigh-in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you're happy with Bootcamp then you can choose to stick with it. Or if you want to relax a little and incorporate some fruit, nuts/seeds and dark chocolate then check out the Bootcamp Light rule changes on this thread and in the next post. Or you can do a hybrid: Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

It's really common for weight loss to stop briefly around weeks 3-5, some people even gain a little weight. Google "week 3 stall" and you will see post after post from people on Atkins, Fast800, keto, after bariatric surgery all asking why they haven't lost weight this week. The simple answer is that you are losing fat but retaining water. The stall will last a week or two and then your weight loss will resume its bumpy path downwards.

I've attached a typical weight loss graph which shows a brief stall at week 4. As you can see, weight loss is not linear; it varies from week to week but the overall trend (shown by the black line) is ever downwards hence our saying that "the trend is your friend." If you follow the rules you can expect an average weight loss of 0.5 to 2lb per week.

"Robin, honestly, no-one ever wants to hear this, but... some us have found that a glass of wine is enough to stall weight loss"

^^yep. Me. (Daily Mail Sad Face)

First emergency meal tonight. Double cheeseburger no bun. I'm away from home, out and about all weekend. Looking out for M&S and Pret.

SayrraT · 31/01/2020 20:42

I've been seriously lacking in veg as we haven't been to the shops so I've pretty much just had protein and fat.

Found a leek and a bit of courgette in the fridge.

Had courgette ribbons with pesto then leeks cooked in butter with some cream and parmasean.

Yummy!

waspfig · 31/01/2020 21:03

Not a bad day today, have had smaller portions than usual as wasn't feeling hungry.

B fried eggs and mushrooms in butter
L leftover chicken traybake and pork belly
D delicious cauliflower shawarma, halloumi, celeriac chips cooked by DH (attached pic - looks a bit beige but was tasty)

I highly recommend the Berber and Q recipe for the cauliflower.

Brassica remember, if you're hungry then eat! It doesn't look like too much food if you've missed breakfast and lunch.

Discontented your LDL cholesterol can rise when you go low carb, although usually the lipid profile improves overall so your HDL cholesterol also rises and triglycerides drop. If you have any specific health condition that you want to know about then please do PM me. Sweet potatoes are really high carb so not suitable for Bootcamp I'm afraid.

B: ff yoghurt with cream and tsp peanut butter
L: lo dough cheesy spinach and quorn pizza
Snack pepperami and piece of cheddar
D: well done Dh- bacon lardons and samphire in cream and pepper sauce on a big mushroom, delish! 20g dark choc

StuntNun · 31/01/2020 21:40

Where are people getting Lo Dough from? I don't think I've ever seen it in the shops.

't'interweb @StuntNun Not cheap but I like them.

B - none except for tea w milk as desperately late for the school run

L - grilled lamb and salad with olive oil and lemon

D - 2 slices LC toast (3.8g each) with cheese and tomatoes, 1 cup milky tea

Separately, I've been drinking rhubarb and custard rooibos tea and it's very good, from a company called Bird and Blend that do all sorts of teas. If you're a tea fiend like me, I highly recommend them.

Need to drink more water !

I've also had a mini NSV. I belong to a group that meets fairly regularly at each other's homes every couple of months and yesterday someone offered to host and went round an email about food, who was veggie, etc. I replied that I was low carbing and would bring my own food. For some ridiculous reason, I've been ashamed in the past to say I was on a diet and I was brought up not to make a fuss about food or inconvenience my host but as you'd expect, no one batted an eyelid and someone else with specific different dietary requirements chimed in to day they'd do their own food too. Don't know why i feel so proud of this but I do!

BIWI · 31/01/2020 22:13

@Harveywoo

There's an awful lot of processed food in your meals - and your carbs aren't coming from veg/salad! You need to go back to the rules!

Rayna37 · 31/01/2020 22:22

Lovely dinner of fajita chicken: just the chicken, shallots, garlic, courgette, peppers and mushrooms on a plate with some sour cream and grated cheese. I use my own fajita spice mix and cook in coconut oil and a bit of olive oil for added fat. Always wonder why I don't have this on a weekly basis!

At a work conference tomorrow yes a bloody Saturday so no parkrun this week! I have hard boiled eggs with me to start the day positively and will do my best to dodge the many carbs likely to be thrown my way. Steak and celeriac chips to look forward to for dinner tomorrow when I finally get home.

CheddarGorgeous · 31/01/2020 22:53

@RobinHobb we are similar. I'm 5'2" with 5kg to lose, I'm on a stall and I can't get away with any sliding away from the rules.

I'm also a reforming sugar addict. It's the only thing I crave - not bread or cheese or alcohol particularly. But I've had the most willpower ever on this bootcamp so I'm quite hopefuleven if the scales are being bastards

Harveywoo · 31/01/2020 23:14

Not at all reflective of the rest of my week and fortunately veg and fat completely dominate @BIWI but thank you for the reminder

Harveywoo · 31/01/2020 23:20

@StuntNun think you can only get it direct from lo dough itself as I do. Very expensive and limited nutritional value but useful as a carrier for salad, cheese etc when all around you are having wraps and pizzas, even if not low carbing, I used it before as an gluten intolerant. They have some decent offers at the moment. Can I post a link without it seeming like an advert? Here it is, please delete if unwanted lodough.co/

HouseTornado · 01/02/2020 06:35

Morning everyone.

Sticking with BC, and scales not shifting, but I remember someone saying week 3 can be a sticky one. I'm keeping the faith, and will see what Monday brings.

B: Egg and cauliflower muffins
L: Tuna salad
D: FGLV and chicken stuffed with philadelphia and herbs

3l water etc

Mumof5kiddies · 01/02/2020 07:14

Serial lurker here. Went out for a Lebanese meal yesterday with my friend and it was lush. It was so filling that I couldn’t eat anything else yesterday!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 01/02/2020 07:25

Morning, lurker Mum!

That does look good. I had such a craving for a meal out last night (basically for anything I haven't cooked myself, that tastes better than anything I can cook myself), but ended up with a freezer meal instead. Got to watch the pennies having replaced leaking boots and ripped bag yesterday afternoon - in the sales so very chuffed with reductions, but still, it's a once-in-a-decade spend for me so scared myself a bit at the cost. ignoring the cognitive dissonance about spending over £150 on second hand books the day before

I really do like this 'not eating anymore thank you' feeling that has kicked in in the last day or two. I was actually half way through a babybel yesterday and had to put it down - having received a very stern We Are Full Now Thank You message from the body. Haven't felt that since last BC. Last few months would have finished it anyway, and then probably had another one or two just in case.

StuntNun · 01/02/2020 07:40

Rayna we have fajitas in big lettuce leaves. Round lettuce works better than iceberg as you can roll/fold the leaves without them breaking.

Thanks for the Lo Dough links, I might give it a try although it's my DH that really misses bread and occasionally accidentally eats a bacon sandwich! Lidl used to do these awesome low carb protein rolls but they stopped selling them a while back. I like the meatzzaa* minced beef base for pizzas although I think M&S's pork mince base works better and makes it more like pizza and less like a giant cheeseburger.

BIWI · 01/02/2020 07:44

I tried the Lo-Dough - they're OK, but quite thick/heavy. And very expensive!

StuntNun · 01/02/2020 07:48

I've just seen that Lo a Dough have a 20% off refer a friend scheme if anyone else is thinking about trying it, it might be worth private messaging someone who has mentioned it on here to ask for their code. Please don't post any referral codes on this thread though.

I'll happily do this if anyone wants to PM me?

MrsBertBibby · 01/02/2020 09:14

Is lo-dough actually nice? I'm trying to work out if it's good for coeliacs, one of ours has coeliac, as does his mum, obviously he isn't low carbing, or dieting at all, being a , but we're always on the lookout for stuff he will enjoy.

MrsBertBibby · 01/02/2020 09:14

Oops, "being a sprouting beanpole teenager"

Hello all, I’ve been lurking as I can’t get on the thread every day. I’m in week 4. I didn’t lose anything last week (unsurprisingly as I went to a burns supper and had some wine) but this week have had a bit of a whoosh and am down again by 2lb. Really happy I kept going! I’m generally enjoying it - it can hard making meals for the rest of the family and seeing them eat lovely bread and things, but it’s not too bad. I am certainly not hungry, so I think that helps. Drinking at leat 3 litres of water a day hasn’t been as hard as I thought and my skin has never looked better!

Just saw this recipe and thought it looked interesting and something new to do with cauliflower - might give it a go, but go easy on the cheese. www.buzzfeed.com/merleoneal/cauliflower-grilled-cheese
