Jan '20 - Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Ready for Bootcamp Light?

StuntNun · 27/01/2020 05:57

Welcome to the third week of Low Carb Bootcamp. As always, log your weigh-in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you're happy with Bootcamp then you can choose to stick with it. Or if you want to relax a little and incorporate some fruit, nuts/seeds and dark chocolate then check out the Bootcamp Light rule changes on this thread and in the next post. Or you can do a hybrid: Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

It's really common for weight loss to stop briefly around weeks 3-5, some people even gain a little weight. Google "week 3 stall" and you will see post after post from people on Atkins, Fast800, keto, after bariatric surgery all asking why they haven't lost weight this week. The simple answer is that you are losing fat but retaining water. The stall will last a week or two and then your weight loss will resume its bumpy path downwards.

I've attached a typical weight loss graph which shows a brief stall at week 4. As you can see, weight loss is not linear; it varies from week to week but the overall trend (shown by the black line) is ever downwards hence our saying that "the trend is your friend." If you follow the rules you can expect an average weight loss of 0.5 to 2lb per week.

Love your description, harvey

I also thought Little Women was fab, Cheddar

I'd forgotten how well leeks caramelize when cooked in butter (last night's dinner - added a couple of eggs to make it a Spanish omelette style dish).

I also feel my taste buds have adjusted and I'm not getting cravings for sweet food, normally my downfall. This is the bit where I have to be careful because it's easy to get complacent and fall into old habits, because it doesn't feel like a real risk.

BIWI · 30/01/2020 09:16

There should be no need to take laxatives @PinkSubscriber! You may notice that your frequency reduces on a low carb diet, but that isn't constipation. Constipation is only when you're struggling to go, or you're in pain.

If you're eating lots of fat, drinking all the water and getting the majority of your carbs from (mostly) green vegetables/salad, then it really shouldn't be an issue.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 30/01/2020 09:37

for Shag - large monks

Feel a bit sorry for them, only losing 1/2" from waist in 8 weeks! They need to go low carb.

Mimosa1 · 30/01/2020 10:03

Oh no, poor monks :(

I'm travelling today nowhere near an M&S food so it will be a bit pick and mix.

I've been slacking on the water so going to drink up today.

Good luck everyone

prettybird · 30/01/2020 12:45

Down to 11st 5.5lb this morning Smile

All that water while I was waiting for dh must have helped Grin

Tonight it's turkey stir fry using broccoli, cauliflower, neeps, a few carrots not too many , mange tout, spring onions and shallots with Naked Noodles Smile

TheClitterati · 30/01/2020 13:27

Its so grim here today - like a giant very wet cloud has descended. Had a lovely lunch of spag bol sauce with wilted spinach. Really warming. I'd never usually consider hot meat as a lunch option and I was so happy I made a big batch earlier in the week.

Dinner might be chicken soup as I have some bone broth to use.

waspfig · 30/01/2020 13:50

Yes @CheddarGorgeous I agree. I used my child free afternoon yesterday to go and see Little Women - it was great! I had a cup of tea but didn't even touch the dark chocolate I had in my bag. Cinema - without sweets!! Definitely a first for me.

I haven't done so well today though. I had Greek yog with linseed and 2 raspberries for breakfast but it didn't fill me up nearly enough so I succumbed to a chai latte at soft play when I gave the kids early lunch. Pre-boot camp me would definitely have ordered cake or a toastie though so I am doing better.

Had a chicken, feta, olive salad when I got in and now stuffed so probably won't need much for tea.

Need to neck some water too.

ShagMeRiggins · 30/01/2020 14:25

Well, the things I’ve learned about Buddhists and monks today.

I had four bites of a baked potato last night, with butter and cheese and sour cream in it. Two of the children are now sick so didn’t really eat theirs and that one was leftover. I was working away in the studio until after 11.00pm and hadn’t eaten dinner, wasn’t hungry.

That damn potato was there, ready, and oh so willing. The siren.

Anyway, four bites was all it took, probably because of all the fat on it, and I was overcome with fatigue and just flopped in bed.

Next time I won’t get carried away with work.

Oh, and this morning I seem to be a pound down and all that bloating I was moaning about skid right off me overnight. Feels much better. Hate being bloated.

Hey everybody...let’s drink WATER!!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/01/2020 14:25

I saw Little Women last night too! Loved it.

Almahart · 30/01/2020 18:26

I had a good recce in M&S while early for a train yesterday. They have some new low carb salads which looked pretty good. I got one of their curries which is a low carb standby for me, had it with cauli rice and loads of yoghurt mixed in.

Lunch today was a pret soup with three pats of butter in. Was still hungry though so bought some cheddar and spring onions to snack in at my desk

MrsBertBibby · 30/01/2020 19:30

Aaaaahaa! I finally remembered an old vegetarian fridge snack today, those quorn roasted sliced fillets. I KNEW there was something to keep me off the cheese.

Harveywoo · 30/01/2020 19:43

Absolutely @ venusandmars, would have been rude not to Grin
B: 1 decent sausage, mushrooms, spinach, egg and butter
L: chicken and cream cheese salad with one of my eggy cheesy almond flour scone things
Snack pepperami, tangerine, cambazola
D: artichoke, smoked salmon, avacado, salad lo-dough wrap
Eyeing the dark choc, it may well feature later
Pleasant surprise at a cheeky mid-week weigh-in, 2, more lbs off, but not counting my chickens til Monday

Rayna37 · 30/01/2020 20:02

300 mile round trip today so just getting the last of my WATER in now. Good food though:

B: Leon Big breakfast box with the beans swapped for extra avocado and an Americano with milk.
L: M&S deli bits: pot of calamari and whole pack of rollitos
D: sea bass, kale and green beans. Chucked the stalk from last night's broccoli on the tray with the frozen green beans, oil and salt: still loving that tip! 20g of 90% Lindt chocolate third night in a row

My weigh-in this morning was half a lb lighter than last week's Thursday low.

PinkSubscriber · 30/01/2020 20:18

I’ve just logged what I’ve eaten today into MFP and I’m getting more protein 73 compared with fat 48. Carbs was 16.

I’ve got my protein and fats the wrong way round haven’t I?

AthelstaneTheUnready · 30/01/2020 21:07

Grin yes, I think so, pink.

I know we don't really count macros here, but the first BC I did, I found it really useful for the first few days, since I had no idea what 'lots of fat' really looked like. Took me a while to readjust, and in the meantime was scarfing slabs and slabs of butter to try and fiddle the macros...
... not really recommended Grin

am pooped tonight. and itchy. am either ill or burning some fat

B: creamy coffee
L: erm, half a kilo of yoghurt and a packet of pork scratchings (it was an odd day, ok!)
D: FLSpinach with the last of the beef mostly offal stew

Doilooklikeatourist · 30/01/2020 21:09

B Greek yoghurt , topped up with cream 50 g berries , 50 g of the most delicious home made granola
L egg mayo
D salmon fillet , roast cauliflower , mushrooms , courgettes and leeks
Slightly too much Chardonnay ... oops
Ps. , thanks @BIWI again for the garanola / muesli recipe , it’s is delicious and so well worth the making

ShagMeRiggins · 30/01/2020 21:11

Yes, protein should be medium, fats should be high. Eat more (good) fats to lose weight.

Not just butter, oil, lower carb mayonnaise, but also 15-20% beef mince, or any fatty mince. Also fat cuts of meat such as ribeye. Eat chicken skin. In fact, eat all skin.

Ignore any recipe that calls for “lean” and just do your thang.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/01/2020 21:27

Loved my dinner tonight. Griddled tuna steaks and asparagus, topped with bacon and kings prawns fried in chilli oil, served on cauliflower rice and served with spinach cooked in the bacon fat. Grin

Mandelinka · 30/01/2020 21:47

BrassicaBabe and Stuntnun thank you for the pancake recipes, will experiment on the weekend.
I’ve done them before and remember some of the recipes were not that great

SayrraT · 30/01/2020 22:25

Hmm, I just realised that I've not had any dinner!

Guess this is an IF day then Grin

Mimosa1 · 30/01/2020 22:53

@almahart I'm intrigued by your spring onion and cheese snacking. I was sent a load in my last odd box and don't really know what to do with them. I find them a bit sharp but maybe with cheese? Hm...

Food today:

  • B: dairylea sandwich on LC bread
  • L: Japanese beef salad. The dressing was sweet and heavy in the soy so probably not too LC but was the best choice of the bunch. Thoughtful colleague had ordered it ahead of time as we only had a short time to eat.
  • D: salmon, mashed swede w butter, baby gem side salad w one tomato and a spring onion

Managed most of the water today. I've also started to drink my tea weak and black. Not nearly as good as the strong milky tea I usually like but still very nice so I'm alternating and using decaf tea bags as I can't tell the difference. The advantage of the black tea is that it stays hot so much longer!

I walked for miles yesterday and today but I'm feeling it in my hood and calves this evening. I really must get fitter. I'm starting c25k again this weekend, wish me luck!

sheepysheep · 31/01/2020 00:10

Oh yes slices of butter, I am with you Athelstane ... in fact that reminds me of a time we were visiting friends - smallest son was aged about 4 and asked for some cheese. Several varieties were proffered and declined and when asked which cheese he was wanting he answered “the cheese that mummy eats”. I sheepishly had to explain that he meant slices of butter. He and I both indulge (in my defence he is a very skinny child and I try to feed him up). The comment was “you’re so lucky for being able to eat that and stay slim” .... yay for LCHF. My hostess cannot be weaned off the low fat / weight watchers mantra no matter what I say to her. And when I ate beige and low fat I was not slim.

Half way through my journey home from the states - chicken salad on the fist plane (yum) and the lounge in Boston has cauliflower rice, fried mushrooms, feta cheese, much greenery (including “Kale, Caesar!” Salad) and bottles of olive oil. It was most excellent and I was very pleasantly surprised. I’ve managed to eat all the right things whilst away though it being America the portions have been huge and I think the scales will punish me when I next weigh on Saturday morning ☹️

sheepysheep · 31/01/2020 00:13

Oh and steak with chimichurri coating... I may just have been back for seconds 😮

Almahart · 31/01/2020 00:33

@mimosa1 the sharp taste of spring onion provides a bit of contrast in the way that a cracker does. It really works!

ShagMeRiggins · 31/01/2020 06:08

What is your “hood” Mimosa?
