Jan '20 - Week 2 Low Carb Bootcamp - How did you do?

We've already seen some fab results, especially from those who started early. We do expect a big variation in the first weigh in. Some of you will have lost several pounds, some a more modest loss. Others won't have lost anything yet either because some healing is needed before weight loss begins in earnest, or because they didn't quite manage to stick to the rules during the first week.

So please check in with us to reflect on how your first week has gone. Try not to compare yourself to others because weight loss is a very individual thing. If you have any concerns about your progress then please do ask. We have had thousands of people through Bootcamp so make use of that collective experience.

Add your weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or tag the rather wonderful ShagMeRiggins with your weigh-in if you can't access the spreadsheet yourself. If you're only just starting then please tag the very lovely AthelstaneTheUnready to be added to the spreadsheet. And to anybody that suspected they couldn't lose weight while eating lots of lovely food, and without feeling hungry... I hope you enjoyed being proved wrong!

@AthelstaneTheUnready I'm pretty sure that I'm one of the losers that will be derailed by even a little alcohol. None for the rest of the weekend for sure. And there's no desire/temptation during the week.

I'm praying my active lifestyle will mitigate a tiny bit against my transgressions Grin

venusandmars · 25/01/2020 13:41

The granola recipe posted by BIWI is amazing. However the difference is that 'once upon a time' I'd have had a huge bowl of granola with a wee bit of yogurt / fruit. Now I have a small bowl of cream and yoghurt with a couple of raspberries and a small sprinkling of nut granola.

@BIWI get off the internet and enjoy your holiday!

ShagMeRiggins · 25/01/2020 13:48

I’ve been doing the wine spritzer thing as well, MrsBert. Shame to ruin a good glass of white so I’m lucky I mostly buy plonk. Wouldn’t dare with a good bottle of Sancerre, though. Also, will keep you in mind the family law questions—I had a solicitor’s appointment in the autumn but had to cancel due to car breakdown and never rescheduled Hmm

And thanks to all expressing concern re separation turnabout. Briefly, because I don’t want to derail, we get along wonderfully, have always enjoyed each other, good love life, shared values and goals, etc. But as I’ve mentioned a few boot camps back we’ve hurt each other terribly and that isn’t easy to recover from no matter how much good there is. Hence the separation (mostly his idea but I quickly got on board.).

So I’m not surprised he wants to fully reconcile. Mostly I’m surprised it’s so soon, I’m surprised at how much I’ve enjoyed the separation we managed (because he’s always been back at weekends to see the children), and I’m thrown because I’m not going fully in again unless what we create going forward meets all my needs. Very afraid of losing myself again.

Okay, enough of that shite!!! Grin

Athelstane the Hormoaners are what we call our three teenagers. Full of hormones and full of moaning. They’re lovely, but combined with my menopausal fluctuations—good Lord the home sometimes resembles a battleground!

Now back to Bootcamp—I proudly resisted my second favourite breakfast this morning of onion bagel with cream cheese and streaky bacon and settled for a couple bits of bacon and a coffee with cream.

Lunch will be tuna mayonnaise with raw spinach and vinaigrette. Bypassing Burns Night altogether by making lasagne tonight, one with sheets one with courgettes, and swerving bechamel altogether. It’s more like a meat & cheese bake but it’s bloody gorgeous. I’m sure I’ll sautée suitable amounts of green veg or do another leafy salad-y thing to go with it.

I am loving the swimming tips and remembering we have a community pool just a couple miles down the road...Hmm

KOKO.

You’re sincerely,

Mrs Long-winded ShagMe

AthelstaneTheUnready · 25/01/2020 14:16

Christ, DoILook those 187ml bottles sound like torture!

I am most definitely a if-there-isn't-at-least-a-bottle-why-are-BOTHERING?! drinker. Not good.

Long-winded ShagMe

Your situation sounds so ifs-and-buts, and that's really tough Flowers. Have you yet tried giving him the teenagers for the week, and you just do the weekends? Halo

BrassicaBabe · 25/01/2020 14:20

Along with keto baking on FB I've been reading about low carb wines. Each to their own and all that but none of that rubbish is passing my glass! When I next have wine I'm going to have bloody good wine Grin

Glad things are going your way Shagme I hear you about "not losing yourself".

Busy morning. So just eaten. Had 2 eggs and two of these chicken sausages (pic) fried in beef dripping along with a mini cheese chunk thingy. The sausages made a nice change

Picking fish and chips up for husband and kids for tea. I find the buying an easy swerve but not picking off the plates or clearing up left overs more difficult.

Athelstane ha ha Logistically it is impossible for us to do that unless I somehow lose my mind and decide to abandon the family home. Which, at one point a few years ago, was a real possibility and I was going to move country to our (my) holiday home and leave him to sort everything. Luckily I got a grip (and my sanity back).

The thing with wine is that a) I spend a fortune if I only buy the good stuff and b) in my drinking days I’d sink a bottle a night, which is such a waste of beautiful wine when one is drinking for self-medication rather than pleasure.

Must admit to two G&Ts last night. Plead special circumstances plus I’m BC Lite so don’t get any bright ideas ladies! One of the reasons my weight loss has been slower than some through the years of this WOE is because of regular though low carb intake of alcohol. Which is much much better now—I can go ages teetotal and if I drink it’s not to oblivion or for self-medication thank fuck—but it’s still often enough on holidays etc to have an impact on my rate of weight loss.

So going into week 3 where we go BC Lite, don’t be like me. Don’t kid yourselves that alcohol won’t have an impact. It is always burned first. It impedes the burning of fat. That’s just science (and I am NOT the scientist in this group, ha, but I know that much!).

Meanwhile...NSV...I’ve comfortably dropped a trouser size and am really happy about it. Three sizes down in the trousers department.

Still far from fit—hello NHS BMI chart, I’m looking at you and giving you the evils—but I like seeing myself in a full length mirror now. Even from the side.

BIWI · 25/01/2020 14:56

Sadly I'm back from holiday now @venusandmars! Arrived back at stupid o'clock this morning.

Piles of washing - thankfully DH's job.

Have done the shopping this afternoon and just hoping I can stay awake until a normal bedtime.

We had a fabulous time, but I've eaten all the food and drunk all the wine (and more Blush) so need to take myself in hand from tomorrow.

@ShagMeRiggins - sounds like turbulent times for you. Have you/would you consider relationship counselling? Not necessarily with a view to getting back together, but to find a way through to a future that works for both of you?

AthelstaneTheUnready · 25/01/2020 15:05

Three sizes down in the trousers department.

Sorry, Shag, I'm not doing well at the adult advice here Blush

ShagMeRiggins · 25/01/2020 15:37

Brassica I think “not losing yourself” is a common theme for women. Possibly true for men as well, I don’t know, but certainly I hear it a lot from friends, and on this forum, and generally. It has, in my view, a lot to do with having children and family roles generally, but I’ve now hit the stage where I have my real self mostly back and don’t want to make the same emotional and practical choices that “lost” me in the first place. I think it’s doable.

What I also think is doable is a strategy for you to not pick at leftovers. The simplest solution is to put your husband and children in charge of clearing meals. So they put away leftovers or put the unsalvageable bits in the compost caddy/bin. Depending on ages, they can also rinse and stack their own dishes. Could that help ease the temptation for you?

BIWI welcome back! I hope SA was all you hoped for, and shame about the wine/food but I know a great Mumsnet forum where you can get all the support and advice you need about easy, healthy weight loss without the sacrifice of hunger and shitty food. The woman who runs the board is a bit of a legend and has helped untold numbers get healthier and happier. PM me for details. Wink

Re counselling, we did about 10 months four years ago, at the height of the crazy/pain. Also did a marvelous weekend counselling retreat last April, but then some family things happened and we couldn’t manage to do the work required to put things into practice. I’ve had counselling, he’s had counselling—we’re nothing if not trying! Both very committed to the marriage and family, as a general rule. I appreciate your advice. I think things will be all right. I think.

Athelstane, I’m sure I’m not the only one who sort of relies on you for your amusing reactions. Keep it up, woman!

Now for that late lunch of tuna...

waspfig · 25/01/2020 15:54

@BrassicaBabe
Back in my uni days, my flat mate used to eat half her takeaway then chuck the rest in the bin and cover it in washing up liquid to stop herself eating more! I would delegate the cleaning up job to someone else and ensure they make the leftovers inedible.

My food for today -
B blue cheese omelette (odd but just what I fancied!)
L cucumber (and a few pepper) strips and egg mayo (a freezing al fresco picnic after long walk with the kids)
D fish (and no chips!) from the chippy

Not enough water yet but a couple of teas and no alcohol.

BrassicaBabe · 25/01/2020 16:01

Dur! Yes of course that's the answer! "Kids, don't put fine your plate. Stuck left overs in the bin and plates in dishwasher!"

I

BrassicaBabe · 25/01/2020 16:02

wasp your flatmate is not alone. I've done that one too in the past Smile

Lionsleepstonight · 25/01/2020 17:01

@StuntNun, Im finding the WOE very easy to follow. Can i continue rather than move to BCL?

ShagMeRiggins · 25/01/2020 17:43

Lionsleepstonight I’ll answer for StuntNun—of course you can! No need to do Bootcamp Lite, in fact if you have a lot of weight to lose (or, somewhat perversely, very little weight to lose) staying on Bootcamp proper is the best way to go as long as you’re happy with what you’re eating etc.

It’s important for you to find your carb tolerance in the long run, but no reason whatsoever to abandon pure Bootcamp.

StuntNun · 25/01/2020 17:49

Is anyone else wondering what ShagMe's first favourite breakfast is?!

Lionsleeps next week we'll be giving people the choice between staying on Bootcamp, moving to Bootcamp Light, or doing a halfway house of Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at weekends. It really depends on whether there's anything you're particularly missing. If you're desperate for fruit, for example, then move to Bootcamp Light. If you're happy as you are then stick with Bootcamp. There's also the element that some people are by nature abstainers and do better having none of something than small amounts. You'll know yourself whether you can cope with e.g. 10g of dark chocolate or whether you're likely to eat the whole bar.

I've been missing alcohol this weekend and there's another week of dry January still to go. I had a G'n'T without the G yesterday which really wasn't worthwhile. So I've bought some fizzy water for tonight that I'll have with lots of ice and a slice. I think it's the ritual of weekend evenings that I'm missing more than anything else.

Harveywoo · 25/01/2020 18:14

Afternoon, hope you’re all having a good weekend!
B: mushroom, bacon, egg
L: oh what a kerfuffle. On a spa day today with buddy, included a “light lunch” which turned out meant sandwich. I explained I wouldn’t eat the bread so was it possible please to just put the same (prawn mayo) on the leaves they would have used as a garnish anyway. This was apparently an unprecedented request. A prawn fricking salad in a spa, really? that odd? Confused the conversation went on for far too long and was just like the Peter Kay garlic bread sketch. Got there eventually.
D: garlic pork with FLGV and lemon mayo

MrsBertBibby · 25/01/2020 19:24

Argh! My solitary pair of jeans (apart from the too small ones) has expired. I do NOT want to go jeans shopping!

Where is good for jeans for a middle aged squidgy woman who likes her knickers to remain private? These were from White Stuff but they only seem to have leggings now.

ShagMeRiggins · 25/01/2020 19:30

Is anyone else wondering what ShagMe's first favourite breakfast is?!

Eggs Benedict! The real kind with best ingredients and homemade hollandaise. I once went into a middle class crisis because I accidentally bought just bacon rather than bacon medallions for that planned breakfast.

Seriously, I need to sort myself out. Grin

prettybird · 25/01/2020 19:48

MrsBertBibby - I've just bought a pair of (Size 12 Smile) jeans from M&S. They are their Harper jeans which are on the waist (which I like Wink) and are technically cigarette (ankle) length. But by getting the "long" ones, I was able to a good "standard" length Grin. They're not too skinny either Smile

I've already had a number of compliments.

M&S seem to have changed the lengths of their jeans, so whereas "regular" used to be exactly right on me, it is now far too long Hmm - but the "short" is far too short Confused

TheClitterati · 25/01/2020 21:49

mrsB I've been wearing Per Una straight Roma jeans for years. Only jeans I've found that properly fit my Booty & hips.

prettybird · 25/01/2020 22:10

Should also add that I have a big bum, chunky thighs and a defined waist have a curvy, hour glass ish shape Wink

1stMrsF · 25/01/2020 23:07

Was about to come on here and bemoan all my failures of the last 48 hours but I've stopped myself and shall say only this: I recognise that poor planning = poor choices and I am proud that I have planned adequately for tomorrow and the coming week.

I am also proud of the good choices I have made and that I am 2.5llbs down since a month ago, which means I've shifted the Christmas excess and then some. This is a real achievement and a leap in the right direction. Now for the other three months of excess that preceded it.

B - bacon, mushroom omelette, tiny spoonful of tinned tomatoes, creamy coffee
L - peanuts, olives, pork scratchings Blush
D - LC sausages (and a small spoonful of haggis), neeps, buttery cabbage, broccoli/cauli cheese (made with cream and all the last bits of the Christmas cheeseboard!)

Welcome back BIWI.

Summery1 · 25/01/2020 23:13

Hi all. Almost there for BC 'full on'. I'm looking forward to lite. Though I've broken a teensy bit into it already.
B: full fry, egg, sausage, mushrooms tomatoes rasher. Creamy coffee. (No toast!).
L: leftover HM broccoli cauliflower and blue cheese soup.(just veg, hm stock & cheese)
D: we went out - mussels with creamy wine sauce. Cod with greens with creamy sauce.. 1 AF beer (26g carb). 15g of 85% chocolate. (1 little(honest) spoon of DHs dessert.)

I struggle to drink so much water. Not great at all today. Definitely on it tomorrow before weigh day.

Redrosesandsunsets · 26/01/2020 00:44

We have almost finished week 2 and I am starting to want toast and carbs generally. Although I am full, and eating well and drinking water, I am going to read back through the posts and check out the granola recipe someone posted (I hope it’s for real!). I want something like that. Thanks for all the support here. Just reading through always helps me sling my thing over here :)

Summery1 · 26/01/2020 00:53

@Redroses I agree. I find reading everyone's posts really helpful.

@StuntNun Are there specific 'rules' for BC lite? Or is it the same as regularl BC with berries and nuts allowed.Grin?
