Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

Unlike any other diet, this WOE fits in with my family and for once we all eat the same but they have a portion of carbs with their evening meal. It couldn't be easier!

stayathomegardener · 17/01/2020 08:22

Slides into the thread late.
Please could you add me at 9st 2lb
Started on the last boot camp with fantastic results and then completely fell off the wagon at Christmas.

stayathomegardener · 17/01/2020 08:24

Sorry just seen I should tag @ShagMeRiggins

Thank you.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 08:30

Hoorah for teapot! I have endo and the pain reduces dramatically, if not entirely, on this WOE - in fact, one way I know my eating is changing is when the hip/leg discomfort starts up.

Stunt's the one with the science (IS insulin a hormone?), but with all the effects this WOE has on female hormonally-driven health issues, I wonder if men have similarly complicated reactions to high carb.

Hands Shag and DoILook dainty lace-edged handkerchiefs to cough into, a la that weedy Camelia lady. Wink

Sayyra, Christ, I've not been doing this since 2014 Shock I'll have a look - I know I've kept some but not sure I kept copies of all. I did occasionally do a 'total amount lost' per week - could probably do an average amount lost per person, adjusted for the amount of time on it.

sparkle67 · 17/01/2020 08:34

Can I join??

Had a baby 7 months ago now and I'd love to loose 2st at least, I'm 12st now.. heaviest I've ever been Sad

My husband, who's 6ft 5 was 23st but since going to the doctors because of various health issues he was told he was borderline diabetic... he started keto in November and so far has lost over 3st Grin obviously because I cook his meals whilst on maternity I basically eat the same BUT can't help the odd carb/chocolate etc Hmm

I'd love to join, husband is very encouraging but some outside support would be lovely Grin

SayrraT · 17/01/2020 08:36

No athelstane I've got them from 2014 until you took over. Maybe 2017 some point?

We used to do "biggest loser" and other things but then on some camps people weren't as keen so we stopped.

ShagMeRiggins · 17/01/2020 08:38

@AthelstaneTheUnready will you add stayathomegardener and sparkle67 to the spreadsheet, please?

And thanks for the hankie. How civilised.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 08:43

ah, gotcha, Sayyra, I thought that sounded impossible Grin

Looks like 2018, I have them from then on. Do you want me to mail them to you if you're intrigued by the data-mining, so you can do everything at once?

SayrraT · 17/01/2020 08:48

Yes, go on! Do you still have my email address or will I pm you?

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 09:00

hang on, I'll pm you, Sayyra

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 09:00

Sayyra even!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 09:03

bloody hell

If anyone needs any help with data collation/ insight generation or stats, that’s my day job so happy to help!

SayrraT · 17/01/2020 09:29

teapot I might call upon you for some help. I am a scientist but stats are not my strong point Grin

Doilooklikeatourist · 17/01/2020 09:39

Thanks @Althestane
Sneezes indelicately
I’ve got the worst sort of cold , look ok but feel dreadful .
B bacon and cheese omlette
L veg soup
D something with chicken things and their crispy skin

Feed a cold , starve a fever 🤒

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 09:43

it used to be mine teapot (hello Salesforces report construction!) but am back in my comfy world of policy development now so a bit rusty.

Feed, DoILook! Feed!

StuntNun · 17/01/2020 09:43

Athelstane yes insulin is a hormone, one of over 200 hormones and hormone-like substances in the human body. The endocrine system is immensely complex so it's little wonder that eating a modern diet so far away from what we evolved to eat can mess us up in so many different ways. It's not just women's health issues, it's also driving diseases such as dementia and cancer. This way of eating isn't just going to improve your weight, it's good for your health overall. Losing 15kg can reverse type 2 diabetes, it makes sense to assume it can also prevent it from developing.

I'm happy to help with stats work too. I have a lot of data from my own low carb programme that I could dig out too if anyone is interested although it isn't as strict as Bootcamp so the results might won't be directly comparable.

@SayrraT aaaah salesforce Grin

I’m in data and insight for marketing, so absolutely enormous data sets from macro trends all the way down to brand owned digital marketing data.

Weirdly, of all the data sets we use to understand consumer behaviour, weight and eating patterns are vastly under represented. We did a bit of work years ago looking at the sale of solid animal fats like lard, beef tallow and poultry fats since the 1940’s and how the trend had changed from consumer purchase to industry, but hit a brick wall because we couldn’t get any kind of stats on where it all went. More animals slaughtered than ever, but less available animal fats in human consumables.. made no sense. Working theory is a lot of it is in the animal feed chain or used for inedible products. It was interesting but got canned unfortunately.

Rayna37 · 17/01/2020 10:05

I've just downloaded the waterlogged app and now kicking myself for not doing it sooner after it's been mentioned so many times! It does everything my spreadsheet does but in a nicer format and means I can keep tracking in the evenings, capture the odd smaller glasses I might have at home or out and about, and most importantly keep tracking at the weekend when I tend to fail to hit targets.

Tentontessie · 17/01/2020 10:26

@Teapotdespot just a personal experience but I was 18st 2 years ago, PCOS, chin hair, infertility etc. Metformin is a common treatment for fertility issues and PCOS and both of my pregnancies were a result of taking it. It basically is a drug that gives the same sort of blood sugar stability that low carb does, just without the added weight loss and delicious food!

I’m down to around 11st now and would like to shift that last stone and have been LCHF for the last two weeks. I did however POAS this morning and am pregnant again! All very pleased. Can anyone advise if I should continue or have higher carbs? I remember in my last pregnancy with terrible sickness the doctor was concerned about constant ketones from dehydration, and I’m definitely in ketosis now!

venusandmars · 17/01/2020 10:31

I am part of a study being undertaken by Glasgow University about the cardiovascular effects of low carb diets. I got the impression that they expected the results to be rather different!!

Food today:
B - avocado, creamy coffee
L - will be at a friend's house so will have to navigate my way round whatever is on offer
D - steak, broccoli, cabbage, (both cooked in lots of butter), fried mushrooms

Notwatchingtvtoday · 17/01/2020 10:38

I’ve lost another lb so that is 4 lbs since Monday and not felt hungry at any point, but have had to exert willpower not to sabotage by snacking on nuts and chocolate which are my downfall.

I did a swede and Celaric mash which was lovely last night and had it with some chicken and stir fried cabbage. I am really enjoying seeing what you are all eating. Despite a really good nights sleep I woke up feeling tired, I tried a glass of water with a tiny bit of salt and lemon and it really gave me a lift, thanks for suggesting it stungun.

I’m using the water app on the Fitbit app, is the waterlogged app any better. I’ve also done what someone else suggested and have measured the volume of my fav mug for herbal teas.

Today’s plan is

Snack 50gms total yogurt before gym as was hungry, 1 coifed with tsp cream
B 150gms total Greek yogurt , 1 tsp cream, 1 coffee with tsp cream
L ham, eggs and avocado
Snack Rollitos , olives if wanted
Dinner, chicken, leftover swede and Celaric mash, Fried cabbage

Water and liquorice and peppermint teas

Notwatchingtvtoday · 17/01/2020 10:40

Congratulations tentontessie

m0therofdragons · 17/01/2020 10:42

@Lionsleepstonight I find that too. I just cook the same and add rice / pasta / potatoes for dc. They definitely appear to eat lots more green veg than their friends.

Teapotdespot · 17/01/2020 10:43

@Tentontessie MASSIVE congratulations!!!!! Star

I’ve been offered metformin a couple of times when I was really struggling TTC a couple years ago, however I then had a miscarriage and because I’ve been able to conceive naturally, they’ll no longer offer it in my area Sad I had a chemical pregnancy too in the same year, so both times I ovulated that year I got pregnant but neither developed unfortunately. I’m very tuned in to ovulation, I know The day before if it’s going to happen which is handy!

They will offer no intervention for PCOS until I’ve tried and failed to conceive for 24 months since my last pregnancy, whether that pregnancy was successful or not. When not TTC, they won’t offer the pill to regulate my cycle because of my weight... and to lose weight and qualify for help they insist on a high carb healthy diet, which if you go to the GP weight clinic to supervise, they kick you off if you lose less than 5 lbs in the first month. Losing 5lbs in a month for a woman with rampant PCOS on a high carb diet is highly unlikely.

So basically, I have to shift the weight myself to get my medical condition under control. There’s loads of other stuff I can’t get too, ironically including a gastric bypass because I’m not fat enough Hmm
