Week 3 - Sumer 19 Low Carb Bootcamp - Bootcamp Light?

BIWI · 27/05/2019 08:09

Morning all. Today sees the start of week 3, which is when you can, if you wish, move on to Bootcamp Light. This means you can now introduce some fruit, some nuts and seeds and alcohol in moderation.

Note the bold formatting!

However you don't have to move on to Bootcamp Light if you don't want to. If it's working for you, then by all means stay on Bootcamp. Some people choose to do Bootcamp during the week but take a more relaxed approach at the weekend.

Here are carb counts for fruit - you can see that most of them are pretty high. These are taken from Sainsbury's website and show the amount of carbs per 100g:

Canteloupe melon 4
Raspberries 4.6
Blackberries 5.1
Galia/Honeydew melon 5.3
Passion fruit 5.8
Strawberries 6.1
Watermelon 6.8
Peach 7.5
Plums 8.8
Papaya 8.8
Nectarine 9
Blueberries 9.1
Pineapple 10.1
Kiwi 11
Apples 11.8
Mango 14.1
Lychees 14.3
Grapes 17
Pomegranate seeds 18.7
Banana 23.2

When it comes to nuts and seeds, these too vary widely:

Brazils 3.1
Walnuts 3.3
Pine nuts 4 (but beware - toasted pine nuts are 10)
Macadamias 5.3
Pecans 5.8
Desiccated coconut (technically a fruit!) 6.4
Almonds 6.9 (smoked almonds are 7.7)
Monkey nuts 9.3
Peanuts (salted) 10.9
Fresh coconut (from the chilled cabinet) 15.2
Cashews 18.1

(These carb counts for either salted or unsalted)

Seeds:

Sesame 0.9
Poppy 4.7
Chia 8.6
Pumpkin 15.2
Sunflower 16.4

As far as alcohol is concerned, the best drinks are clear spirits (gin/vodka/whisky/rum) but you need to be careful what mixer you're using. Soda is by far the best option, but if you want something else, you'll need to go down the artificial sweetener route to keep the carbs low.

Dry white wine and Champagne are OK, and red wine. Avoid beer and cider.

@mOtherofdragons last time I was hit on by a random male whilst out he was dressed like a member of E17( showing my age)and he licked my face by way of introduction. He was also very affronted that I slapped him. Think BIWI nailed it though

prettybird · 02/06/2019 21:15

I'd been trying to extend full Boot Camp for an extra 2 weeks because of the wine I'd imbibed at London Wine Fair (even though I spat everything, tasting over 100 wines does end up with a certain amount of alcohol being consumed Hmm) but tonight, because we were having a lovely leg of lamb (roasted the traditional way, with slits filled with rosemary, garlic and wee slivers of anchovy), I allowed dh to open one of the bottles of wine that we supply. We were both just going to have a wee glass but it was sooooo nice and smooth........Blush

Oh well, I'm only a day early on to Boot Camp Light Wink ignores BIWI's reminder about "alcohol in moderation" and the fact that dh and I are sharing a bottle of 14% Rainbow's End Shiraz in a single night Blush

1Wildheartsease · 02/06/2019 21:23

Prettybird I think I might invite myself for dinner at your place... the wine shared 3 ways wouldn't be nearly as bad :)

Rayna37 · 02/06/2019 21:43

Pork stroganoff from the recipe thread was a hit with DH tonight, on a bed of kale. Slow start with water but think I'm about there now. No idea what weigh in will bring I've been unpredictable despite daily weighs, edging up and down! Yes

prettybird · 02/06/2019 22:12

You'd have been welcome Wildheart - and you'd helped me us out Wink

BIWI · 02/06/2019 22:19

@venusandmars and @dementedma (who isn't on BC right now) have just done a bloody lovely thing and gone and been a witness for another MNetter. What lovely people you are! Flowers Star Gin

Had roast pork tonight , hopefully I’ve made some scratchings from leftover crackling ( took the crackling layer off the pork , left it roasting with some extra salt , then broke it up and it’s now in the fridge ) the bit I tested was grand , so 🤞
Made lovely gravy, just used the meat juices , some of the veg water from the boiled broccoli , a know of butter and a big slurp of double cream . Was very nice .
Keeping the water topped up , TMI , but nice clear wee

Congratulations CerealKiller

Pizza I think you need new scales , and keep them on a hard floor

Namechange I lived on rennies when I had heartburn and gastritis, sips of fizzy water also helped

Bit nervous of weigh in , but it’s got to be done l

venusandmars · 02/06/2019 22:26

yup, @prettybird I think you need some close supervision, someone to sit by your side drink your wine support you in your journey eat your delicious food perhaps I could help? Smile (that was a winsome pleading smile)

I had a bloke hit on me when I was 50+ it was embarrassing and cringey and laughable. He was Australian. He said he'd like to take me to bed. I laughed. He said imagine I am licking my way up your thigh. I laughed some more (in a you're ridiculous way, not in a sexy tee-hee way). He said imagine.... (some other stuff)… I told him to fuck off, and I went away - quickly. What a tosser!

I've been out all day, being a witness at another MNetter's wedding. Fab time out in the Highlands (and I momentarily felt like MN royalty)
B - nothing because I spelt in and had a 'very important appointment'
L - aka wedding breakfast - Cajun chicken with sour cream and salad
D - lamb curry and buttered spinach

venusandmars · 02/06/2019 22:30

@BIWI x-posted with you. But thanks, we had a wonderful day, the rain stopped, we even saw some blue sky. There was wonderful wedding cake (which I took away in a party bag and donated to my dh).

starsky22 · 02/06/2019 22:50

I saw that thread earlier, didn't realise you were one of the witnesses venus well done to you and demented such a lovely thing to do!

Had a lovely dinner of sausages, celeriac mash, cabbage fried in bacon and buttery asparagus. Followed by some dark chocolate melted in a little double cream as recommended upthread, was lush!

SittingontheSidelines · 02/06/2019 23:04

Dinner/late lunch was lamb rack. Mushrooms and shallots roasted in with the meat. Asparagus and samphire. Lovely.

However this evening I had a few peanuts, a tiny taste of chocolate birthday cake I've been skirting around since Wednesday, and three/four crisps. Bit cross with myself as I've been determined to stick to the rules.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 02/06/2019 23:09

Pleased with myself - nearly threw it all in after 5 weeks to eat toast and chocolate but I didn't. I wasn't even hungry! Wish I wasn't so embarrassed of my size (even to myself) that I could weigh myself then I'm sure I'd see a difference.

Crisis over, weekend over so no more wine. Lots of water this week I think.

TheWaiting · 02/06/2019 23:15

Succumbed to 4 squares of Bournville chocolate this evening and a glass of baileys. Oh well! I’ve been faithfully on plan since last Friday so I’m not too cross at myself. Before starting BC I would have eaten the entire large sharing bar and had 2 more glasses of booze so in terms of looking at it as a WOE long term, I can see a massive shift in both my attitude and my tastebuds. In fact whilst I enjoyed the chocolate, I found it quite sweet which isn’t something I’d normally say about dark chocolate so I think my tastes have definitely changed for the better.

Well done re the wedding, Venus!
MofD, if it makes you feel better, that happens to me all the time as my best friend who’s the same age as me (48) looks like she’s mid 30s and is always chatted up in bars.

Any breakfast advice? I seem stuck with 5% yoghurt. I don’t eat eggs or red meat so I’m struggling a bit with breakfasts. Thanks

venusandmars · 02/06/2019 23:32

Breakfast - anything you fancy: a cold sausage from the previous evening (sorry, that sounds a bit rude), soup, avocado, fried mushrooms, chicken curry....

We have a weird 'breakfast' mentality that it must be 'breakfast' food. But in other countries they just eat normal food all day. In Western countries our cereal, toast and jam breakfast; sandwich, crisps and juice lunch, meat, potatoes and veg dinner has wreaked havoc on our bodies.

In Vietnam I ate 'pho' or soup for breakfast. In Chile I ate 'palapa' avocado for breakfast, in Mexico I ate huevos rancheros (eggs with tomato and chilli sauce). In China I ate nothing because it was all truly vile! Traditional UK breakfasts might have included smoked fish (in kegeree) or devilled kidneys.

Summery1 · 03/06/2019 01:54

Just to stay accountable...
B: 2 eggs, half avocado, tomato, mushrooms, rasher.
L: prawn salad, leaves, coleslaw, pickled cucumber, celery, Mari rose sauce
D: leaves, ham, cheddar, olive oil.
Treat: small Aldi bar of 75% chocolate. Delish!

Summery1 · 03/06/2019 01:54

Oh yes. Coffee with cream X3 (1 was decaf)

MrsBertBibby · 03/06/2019 07:07

Woot! New low, bang on 13 stones.

Keep on trucking!

IStillMissBlockbuster · 03/06/2019 07:18

Well, i'm down a pound this week. A definite slow down in loss but better than nothing I guess. KOKO.

readyforsunshine · 03/06/2019 07:28

Yesterday was scrambled eggs & bacon, goats cheese salad then roast pork, roast butternut squash, lo carb cauli cheese & spring greens, 2 glasses of wine.
I am up this morning but have drunk alcohol 3 days in a row🤦‍♀️

m0therofdragons · 03/06/2019 07:47

Continuing to be frustrated. I was 10st every day since Friday am, followed over the weekend including being the driver so I didn't drink. Today I'm 10st 1!

I can only assume my period is interfering. I feel slimmer so hopefully the scales with budge by Wednesday. I'm losing 1lb a week but messed up week 2 so I had predicted Wednesday for my loss and I'm trying not to be disheartened.

MumbleLumble · 03/06/2019 07:54

1.8lb down this week. 12.2lb overall. Yay!

MrsBertBibby · 03/06/2019 07:56

Sidelines where do you get samphire? Really fancy giving it a whirl.

EatenAlltheEasterEggs · 03/06/2019 08:08

Most disappointed. Half a pound ON. Starting week 4 at 13 st 10.

I was 13 st 8 on Thursday. So annoyed. No alcohol, no carbs, no cheats. Dinner last night was chicken, cabbage, Kale, carrots and a bit of sausage meat - perhaps not the lowest carb sausage meat? Started indulging in cream on my strawberries and in my coffee - perhaps that’s done it - or is it my newly arrived period after an absence of 9 months? Joy. Am totally wiped out with a bad taste in my mouth too so thought I was well in ketosis. Wasn’t expecting a gain this early.

Rshard · 03/06/2019 08:23

A measly half a pound here but I’ll take it.

Well done for all the scale and non scale victories, the navigating of social occasions and the general koko everyone!
