Week 3 - Sumer 19 Low Carb Bootcamp - Bootcamp Light?

BIWI · 27/05/2019 08:09

Morning all. Today sees the start of week 3, which is when you can, if you wish, move on to Bootcamp Light. This means you can now introduce some fruit, some nuts and seeds and alcohol in moderation.

Note the bold formatting!

However you don't have to move on to Bootcamp Light if you don't want to. If it's working for you, then by all means stay on Bootcamp. Some people choose to do Bootcamp during the week but take a more relaxed approach at the weekend.

Here are carb counts for fruit - you can see that most of them are pretty high. These are taken from Sainsbury's website and show the amount of carbs per 100g:

Canteloupe melon 4
Raspberries 4.6
Blackberries 5.1
Galia/Honeydew melon 5.3
Passion fruit 5.8
Strawberries 6.1
Watermelon 6.8
Peach 7.5
Plums 8.8
Papaya 8.8
Nectarine 9
Blueberries 9.1
Pineapple 10.1
Kiwi 11
Apples 11.8
Mango 14.1
Lychees 14.3
Grapes 17
Pomegranate seeds 18.7
Banana 23.2

When it comes to nuts and seeds, these too vary widely:

Brazils 3.1
Walnuts 3.3
Pine nuts 4 (but beware - toasted pine nuts are 10)
Macadamias 5.3
Pecans 5.8
Desiccated coconut (technically a fruit!) 6.4
Almonds 6.9 (smoked almonds are 7.7)
Monkey nuts 9.3
Peanuts (salted) 10.9
Fresh coconut (from the chilled cabinet) 15.2
Cashews 18.1

(These carb counts for either salted or unsalted)

Seeds:

Sesame 0.9
Poppy 4.7
Chia 8.6
Pumpkin 15.2
Sunflower 16.4

As far as alcohol is concerned, the best drinks are clear spirits (gin/vodka/whisky/rum) but you need to be careful what mixer you're using. Soda is by far the best option, but if you want something else, you'll need to go down the artificial sweetener route to keep the carbs low.

Dry white wine and Champagne are OK, and red wine. Avoid beer and cider.

Congratulations Iamnotacerealkiller ! A LCHF baby - how wonderful.

m0therofdragons · 02/06/2019 01:36

Congratulations @Iamnotacerealkiller

I have been to a gig but drove so no alcohol and so much dancing I hit 23k steps for yesterday with park run. Taking dc to the cinema tomorrow so much less active. Stayed lc at bbq but the quantity of meat wasn't ideal. We'll see if the exercise cancelled out the over eating tomorrow morning. Sleep time now!

SittingontheSidelines · 02/06/2019 06:43

thanks @prettybird. I should have realised it was a highly technical termGrinbeen sadly lacking in that the last couple of days but back on it now.

Rshard · 02/06/2019 06:53

Congratulations cerealkiller!

blackteaplease · 02/06/2019 07:24

Congratulations @cereal, a lchf baby.

I've managed to have a whole 9 hours sleep last night and feel like a normal human. Ds woke at 7 instead of his usual 5.45. Low carbing is definitely harder when you are knackered.

tootstastic · 02/06/2019 09:02

Aww wonderful news @Iamnotacerealkiller! A bootcamp baby 👶🏻 Huge Congratulations 💐

Hope everyone's having a good week. @prettybird I can just imagine the taste of your tablet, it must be so hard to resist.

Well, speaking of resisting (or not!) I'm slightly disappointed with myself after hitting the Prosecco harder than I should have last night, so may have scuppered this week's weigh in.

Feeling a bit fragile, but forced my scrambled eggs with butter down this morning and I'm still going to do my planned double gym class....Bodypump followed by Bodybalance.
I need to hit the water hard today!

Notwatchingtvtoday · 02/06/2019 09:30

ShagMeRiggins · 02/06/2019 09:44

Lovely news iamnotacerealkiller congratulations. Flowers

I’m up 3lbs this morning. Wtaf. Meh, it’ll come off in the long run. I know I’m sticking to plan (despite two measly bites of a pita bread the other night, which is not the cause). And I know the plan works. And I know the body fluctuates wildly in weight on a moment to moment basis.

NigellaAwesome · 02/06/2019 10:01

Congrats Iamnotacerealkiller

I need BIWI's stick. I've been doing really well, yesterday had bacon, mushroom, avocado & egg for brekkie. I went to a children's party and avoided the pizza and cake. Had greek yoghurt, creme fraiche & a couple of strawberries mid afternoon, and went out for dinner with friends and had steak, garlic butter and green veg. All good so far.

So why the fuck did I devour a coffee and walnut cake that was in the fridge afterwards? Talk about self sabotage. In my defence I am very very stressed at the moment, and also had a bit of a bombshell yesterday on top of everything else - but I need to find a way to stop turning to carby food every time my emotions get the better of me.

I need to accept that today is a new day, accept that my weigh in tomorrow will be shit, and just get on with it. Onwards and upwards.

MrsBertBibby · 02/06/2019 10:10

That's the spirit Nigella. Sorry you're so stressed.

Almahart · 02/06/2019 10:46

Another ib down, so happy with that

Took ds1 to the Manga exhibition at The British Museum yesterday and had a lovely day

Nigella that’s the spirit, just get back on it. I find a treat that really works for me on this woe is a chocolate pot - I melt a piece of dark chocolate in the microwave and stir in some double cream. It’s actually sweeter than chocolate on its own. Might help to have some treats up your sleeve?

I’m really excited to see that cantaloupe melon is relatively low carb but can’t find any anywhere Confused

Have pork for a roast today - looking forward to lots of lovely crackling

Bloodybigbabybelly · 02/06/2019 10:48

@Iamnotacerealkiller Congratulations Flowers

starsky22 · 02/06/2019 11:13

Still catching up on thread, but need to post this to make myself accountable. Went to a BBQ yesterday, I drove, so managed to avoid all the alcohol and instead drank lots of water, ate loads of meat, avoided the bread, potato salad and chickpea salad and picked out some cucumber and feta from another salad. Was feeling very good with my choices, but come evening was starving so we got an indian take-away for dinner, had tikka king prawns and saag paneer, but then went and ate a couple of onion bahjis. So annoyed with myself after being so good at the BBQ, however today have realised that although the BBQ food was all low carb it was also low fat, which was why I was so hungry later on, next time will take some mayo with me! Feeling bloated today and have probably put on weight so not looking forward to tomorrow's weigh-in, but going to stick to it today! Started off with bacon and a fried egg for breakfast, not sure about lunch, but dinner will be sausages with celeriac mash and veg. Off to catchup up on the thread and drink some water!

starsky22 · 02/06/2019 11:27

Aw, congratulations cereal lovely news! Flowers and thanks for the coronation chicken recipe, looks yum!

nigella snap! why do we do it! Although I think your cake sounds nicer that my cheat of onion bahji! Grin

I need some of your willpower pretty resisting tablet is impressive!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 02/06/2019 11:34

Congratulations @Iamnotacerealkiller

Sorry to hear about the emotional eating @NigellaAwesome but at least you have recognised it for what it is and are getting back on the horse immediately

After yesterday's bbq I wasn't hungry so didn't have dinner - woke up this morning with quite a headache though, having had 1 small glass red and 1 large glass fizz. I really can't drink v much on this WOE (which is probably a good thing) but it meant my poor head was pounding as I sweated my way through a kettlebell work out this morning

Breakfast: chunk of Brie, 2 boiled eggs, 1 protein roll with butter and a creamy coffee

Lunch: not sure yet

Dinner: possibly pizza made using lo-dough as a base

prettybird · 02/06/2019 11:42

It helps that I make it regularly and know that every batch is consistently good Smile

What I fail at (have only managed to do this once Shock but never again Blush) is spitting out the ball of pre-tablet after checking to see if it's reached soft ball stage Blush

m0therofdragons · 02/06/2019 11:47

It's fair to say, park run photos are not flattering!

Despite being healthy bmi (top 1/4 but still healthy) I still feel bigger than everyone around me. I have wide hips so waist is slim, bra a size 32 and collar bone sticking out... hips still wide. I also have no idea how to dress for a night out and ended up wearing a top from about 10 years ago that I thought was fine until I was out and felt really unfashionable.

Sorry for the pity party. Feeling ugly and crap because no guys spoke to me last night in the bar but lots came up to my two friends so felt invisible. We're the same age... I'm happily married but ridiculously I'd still like the chance to turn down the guys (the feminist in me is screaming at me right now). Anyway, I guess being the ugly one is better than being the fat ugly one Confused

Rshard · 02/06/2019 11:50

Flowers for nigella and m0ther - that’s what this thread is so good at - giving support. Def on of the best on MN

Youwanapizzame · 02/06/2019 12:38

Massive congratulations cereal that's lovely news!!! 🍼🍼🍼

So I weighed myself in Boots yesterday. They weighed me at 18.4.... my scales are showing low 15 ish. Ive thought my scales were a bit crazy but that's put me right out. I now have NO idea what I've lost. I've obviously lost quite a lot as I've had a few comments this week. So frustrating. I'm going to stop recording my weight on the sof as that's now pointless. I'll carry on using the tight dress.

Gaaaaaah.

B - bacon x2 babybel
L- kofta and salad
D - leftover tikka from last night

Notlostjustexploring · 02/06/2019 12:41

m0ther I can definitely relate to the "happily married but would still like to be hit on by strangers", although if you were wearing a wedding ring I imagine that would have put off a fair old number?

TheWaiting · 02/06/2019 12:49

Yay at Cereal’s baby news! Flowers

Sorry, I’ve not caught up with everyone yet. I can’t keep up with how fast the thread moves. Well done to everyone!

NigellaAwesome · 02/06/2019 12:49

@m0therofdragons When I look back at myself in my twenties I remember feeling like you did last night. It felt like guys always chatted up my friends, and I felt like the ugly sidekick.

Why do we do this to ourselves? I'm perfectly presentable, and actually then I was quite pretty and a lot slimmer, but why do we stake so much of our feeling of self esteem on the opinions of people we don't even know, and frankly are probably just out for a quick shag?

As for clothes no longer being fashionable, most of my clothes are very old friends. So what if they're not bang on trend?

Summery1 · 02/06/2019 12:59

pizza are you talking about a 3 lb difference? Clothing & shoes would account for that.
That said, some people don't like weighing. I'm afraid I'm a bit obsessed!Grin

Summery1 · 02/06/2019 13:03

I'm 50+. If I was in a bar with 2 girlfriends and they started flirting with random strangers I'd be Shock and AngryAngry. Is it my age?

MrsFionaCharming · 02/06/2019 13:17

Thank you for all the lovely comments, and water flavouring suggestions.

Today’s angry rant of the day:
The benefits of a low carb diet are well documented, and it’s recommended for all sorts of medical conditions from type 2 diabetes to epilepsy.
So why does a hospital cafeteria have so few low carb options?! The salad bar isn’t open at weekends, so the only cold options are sandwiches or cake. The hot options are all things with ‘built in’ carbs, like a pie or pasta bake, so you can’t even just skip the rice on the side or whatever.
Luckily on a Sunday there’s a carvery counter, so I was able to have the meat and vegetables, but even then, the red cabbage was unbelievably sweet, like it had been cooked in syrup.
