Week 3 - Sumer 19 Low Carb Bootcamp - Bootcamp Light?

BIWI · 27/05/2019 08:09

Morning all. Today sees the start of week 3, which is when you can, if you wish, move on to Bootcamp Light. This means you can now introduce some fruit, some nuts and seeds and alcohol in moderation.

Note the bold formatting!

However you don't have to move on to Bootcamp Light if you don't want to. If it's working for you, then by all means stay on Bootcamp. Some people choose to do Bootcamp during the week but take a more relaxed approach at the weekend.

Here are carb counts for fruit - you can see that most of them are pretty high. These are taken from Sainsbury's website and show the amount of carbs per 100g:

Canteloupe melon 4
Raspberries 4.6
Blackberries 5.1
Galia/Honeydew melon 5.3
Passion fruit 5.8
Strawberries 6.1
Watermelon 6.8
Peach 7.5
Plums 8.8
Papaya 8.8
Nectarine 9
Blueberries 9.1
Pineapple 10.1
Kiwi 11
Apples 11.8
Mango 14.1
Lychees 14.3
Grapes 17
Pomegranate seeds 18.7
Banana 23.2

When it comes to nuts and seeds, these too vary widely:

Brazils 3.1
Walnuts 3.3
Pine nuts 4 (but beware - toasted pine nuts are 10)
Macadamias 5.3
Pecans 5.8
Desiccated coconut (technically a fruit!) 6.4
Almonds 6.9 (smoked almonds are 7.7)
Monkey nuts 9.3
Peanuts (salted) 10.9
Fresh coconut (from the chilled cabinet) 15.2
Cashews 18.1

(These carb counts for either salted or unsalted)

Seeds:

Sesame 0.9
Poppy 4.7
Chia 8.6
Pumpkin 15.2
Sunflower 16.4

As far as alcohol is concerned, the best drinks are clear spirits (gin/vodka/whisky/rum) but you need to be careful what mixer you're using. Soda is by far the best option, but if you want something else, you'll need to go down the artificial sweetener route to keep the carbs low.

Dry white wine and Champagne are OK, and red wine. Avoid beer and cider.

I too am ovulating at the mo. How can I usually tell? Well without looking at a calendar, I generally know because my bladder shrinks to the size of a gnat’s with about as much strength as an eyelash* Hmm Cue my best ever timed weekend to massively focus on my fluid intake. I’m in one of three states today - on the loo, on the way back from the loo, or needing to cross my legs suddenly and hobble to the loo for fear of pissing myself.
On the plus side, I’m kicking ass at getting my water in. Feeling very squishy and bloated though. Hoping it’s an imminent whoosh preparing to release itself.
Loving the cold butter mint too!

*Hayfever induced headache/brain fog means I couldn’t think of anything suitably weak so eyelash was all I had Grin

Also (can you tell I’ve just caught up and vegging out) I am also wanting to sort my bottom out. I’m short, and should have a fairly athletic shape (read: no real waist or hips *) if I wasn’t several stones overweight. So my bum has always been small and compact. One of the last places to put on weight.
ManyYears ago, I used to kid myself it was Kylie-esque (think gold lamè hot pants) (it wasn’t) but apparently, as well as the injustice of always having had a fat face which finally had its moment of glory like the window of a ripe pear, for about a nanosecond, before age made it start to collapse. Or, deciding to embrace and grow out my grey hair after years of covering my roots every 2 weeks, only to find myself surrounded by early twenty-somethings rocking the silver look fabulously with their young, dewy bastarding faces next to my very non-dewy face. BUT, but now, also, just as I’m getting my arse literally into shape, NOW, now it would appear that my kylie-esque arse is also wrong place, wrong time. Because it’s all about the big butts now, and I just have a saggy flat little excuse. Not even full cheeks. They’re like 3/4 sized arse cheeks.

So, if there’s really any justice in the world a way to change this, I too would like a bum rejuvenation. I don’t need a bubble butt, just filled out to full sized bum cheek shape, and maybe yes, a little bit wider/heart shaped if poss. Weighted squats you say? Hmm

*I’m deluding myself clinging to the notion that childbirth may have widened my hips slightly so that I ‘gain’ a bit of a waist. There’s not much distance between my chest and hips so harder to create any real shape there.

@EatenAlltheEasterEggs bloody menopause! I was blindsided at 57 by a sudden and unexpected period, the day I went on holiday ffs!

Food today:
B - avocado
L - boiled egg, butter, salad, M&S chorizo rollitos
D - asparagus, raspberries with yogurt and cream

Ninkaninus · 01/06/2019 17:55

Thanks m0ther but it won’t have been me worrying about lack of hunger - that’s one of my favourite lowcarb benefits and I never stress about calorie intake or lack thereof. Maybe it was Name? (Trying to think of anyone else whose username starts with N?)

We had a lovely Greek meal for a very late lunch today: lamb meatballs in garlic tomato sauce, grilled aubergine, prawns, chicken wings, and a Greek coffee to finish. That’ll do for today I think, although I do have a bag of mixed nuts just in case we get a bit peckish tonight. Going out to the pub to watch the Champion’s League final tonight, although I may well wander back to the hotel halfway through the game just to chill, we’ll see how it goes!

Have a lovely evening everyone!

@18pagesfrontandback and @ShagMeRiggins - get a couple of kettlebells and look up Bodyfit by Amy and Hasfit on YouTube. Loads of kettlebell workouts which are great for legs and bum 🍑

Notlostjustexploring · 01/06/2019 18:53

All the running chat might actually make me dig out my running gear. I'm itching to do some exercise, but after bedtime is finished I usually can't face it.

I was winning at low carbing on Thursday. I had lunch with a friend on Thursday somewhere very nice and had fillet steak with a side of broccoli and washed down with champagne. With coffee and cream instead of dessert. Best lunch ever ever ever.

Sticking to the rules this week and I'm now being rewarded by seeing typical week 1 trends. In fact I'm hopeful that I may be just a smidge below my end weight from previous bootcamp come Monday weigh in. Sub 13 stone is in my grasp!!!

I've also just bought a cold water tea infuser thing, which I'm firmly blaming on this thread. Well I'm not blaming as such, but a week of actually drinking only water and coffee and no longer subbing in squash on the fly has left me bored of water! And the product placement in the shops led to an impulse buy!!

I've also unintentionally taught my toddler the joys of eating peanut butter from the spoon....Blush

TheWayOfTheWorld · 01/06/2019 18:54

Absolutely stuffed.

Had bacon, mushrooms and spinach for breakfast with a creamy coffee.

Just back from bbq - had a sausage, burger (bunless obvs), prawns, halloumi, salad leaves, mayo, cucumber, celery and garlic/onion dip followed by LCHF choc mousse with a couple of raspberries and cream and a couple of glasses of fizz. Plus lots of water.

DH has just asked what I want for dinner Confused

prettybird · 01/06/2019 19:17

I've had to use nerves of steel today Halo. Not only have I had to make tablet (my tablet is renowned Wink) but I also made a giant double batch of choc chip cookies (technically a quadruple batch of the original MN recipe which I've adapted - but I've never made a single batch) for a visiting French ruby team of 13 and 14 year olds plus their coaches. I'm not even a parent of that age group but dh (in charge of our rugby club's Youth Section) was worried that the other parents wouldn't step up to the mark with their contributions Hmm

I then had to (wo)man a large table groaning with, in addition to my contributions, home made brownies, meringues and cream, fairy cakes, crispy cakes, malteser cake, cheese scones, more choc chip cookies, bought-in doughnuts, lemon slices, carrot cakes, chocolate chip muffins, blueberry muffins, awaiting the ravening hoards Shock and didn't have a single taste Halo

The French kids and adults were very appreciative (the adults didn't want the kids to have any tablet Wink - and I'd been prepared enough to take along a plastic container one of the Lidl Greek yoghurt tubs so that I could give them their own supply to take away Grin)

I drank a lot of water over the afternoon! Wink

I've come home and treated myself to some pastrami and Emmenthal Grin

SittingontheSidelines · 01/06/2019 19:51

I take my hat off to you @prettybird

prettybird · 01/06/2019 20:05

There were 37 French kids plus 11 adults - plus our own kids & coaches Smile

We didn't let them at the cakes until they had had their post game pasta and pizza (plus the French kids unlike ours spent ages in the showers after the games) - but there were so many cakes and biscuits (and tablet) that by the end, when we were trying to clear up, they were turning them down Shock (needless to say, our senior 2nd team, who have a dinner at the club tonight, were more than happy to hoover up the remainders Grin)

AthelstaneTheUnready · 01/06/2019 20:12

18pages, those side stretches will give you a waist. Seriously will pull in by inches. You know, the raise one arm over your head and reach over and sideways as far as you can - without bending forwards or backwards.

You need to do about 100 on each side, but only once a week.

Rayna37 · 01/06/2019 20:36

Great food today. Low carb "porridge", asparagus and bacon with poached eggs and hollandaise for lunch and a really juicy burger with celeriac chips and Cavolo Nero this evening, preceded by some amazing poached salmon and cream cheese from Waitrose eaten straight from the tub with celery. Perhaps could do with more veg (just remembered we used to talk about FLGV!) and definitely low on water.
Just about to brew my first buttermint.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 01/06/2019 21:10

Hi all, i've been away from the thread for a few days as i just found out im pregnant!

I do intend to continue with low (ish) carb as i gained so much weight in my first trimester last time i would like to sts at least. i may not post much as i don't want to derail others with non allowed stuff.

Incidentally i made an amazing coronation chicken today, i actually prefer it to the sickly sweet shop stuff.

poach two chicken breasts (or equivalent fattyer meat) in a little chicken stock.

Meanwhile saute a chopped shallot in lots of oil (i use peanut/duck fat) when they have softened add a teaspoon each of tumeric, cumin and chilli powder (i use mild but change to taste) cook gently in the oil so it makes a paste.

Turn off the heat then add a big tablespoon of plain yoghurt to the pan to get to the flavour and tip it all out into a bowl. add two tablespoons of mayo plus flaked almonds chopped coriander as a garnish if wanted (i didnt have either of these and it was still great. season to taste. shred/dice the chicken and mix into the sauce.
Its great just with some chopped lettuice and cucumber.

venusandmars · 01/06/2019 21:12

I have loads of 'mini goals'. I flip between kg, lbs, and clothes. So on the scales today I momentarily reached one of my kg mini goals. These things fluctuate and I doubt that tomorrow or the next day I will see the same number, but it tells me that it is possible (and I will make it, consistently, sometime soon)

@18pagesfrontandback yes, my arse has also gone awol. My dh used to say I had 'glorious buttocks' Sadly I no longer have any buttocks. In fact I think my bum is now something akin to the 'camel toe' look I had on the other side when I was at my fattest!

@Notlostjustexploring - the running chat makes me want to burn every bit of 'fitness kit' in the house Smile

@prettybird - tablet, oh that glorious, crunchy, rich delight..... To be honest I doubt I could enjoy a crumb of tablet these days, but the smell would drive me mad. You are saint to have not eaten it.

How interesting though that the food and treats were so carb and sugar laden. It reflects such an old model of thinking - i.e. 'going to do exercise need carbs before; done exercise need carbs after'

Perhaps you could have a 'stealth' lchf rugby team...

The so called 'normal' team would run out of puff on the field as soon as their glycogen stores were depleted (requiring half time oranges etc), but the lean mean low carb team could run for hours on their fat burning metabolism......

prettybird · 01/06/2019 21:28

I think to be fair, at 13 and 14, the youngsters do burn off their carbs.

I am trying to subtly adapt ds' diet now that he's back home (who is desperately trying to put on weight Envy) with plenty of protein, fat and a FLGV Grin I make him a granola which, although it has rolled oats and a small amount of maple syrup in it (and various dried fruits), has a shedload of nuts (Brazil nuts, almonds - ground flaked and roughly chopped, walnuts, pecans), flaxseed/linseed/Q10, olive oil and coconut oil and egg whites. Plus a generous couple of teaspoons of cinnamon.

BIWI · 01/06/2019 21:36

Congratulations @iamnotacerealkiller! Thanks

Notlostjustexploring · 01/06/2019 21:49

prettybird bloody hell I'm impressed!! I bow at your willpower!

iamnotacerealkiller ah congratulations!!! That's lovely. And good luck low carbing while pregnant. That's no mean feat.

I made it out for my little jog (tempted as I was to set fire to my trainers as per venusandmarsGrin). It's warm and humid and like breathing soup and boy am I looking forward to losing weight to make that less hard!

prettybird · 01/06/2019 21:53

Flowers Iamnotacerealkiller

Eating fresh and healthily can only be good for you - and that coronation chicken sounds lovely Smile

Iamnotacerealkiller · 01/06/2019 22:10

Thanks! it very (very) early so we shall see. Dont worry i intend to stay low carb i will stop being quite so obsessive about it though, bigger portions etc

X

Heartyhooker · 01/06/2019 22:16

Congratulations @cerealkiller . I only put about 5kg on each pregnancy , was already fat though. So can be done , looking back all my cravings were veg based.

SittingontheSidelines · 01/06/2019 22:21

What is FLGV?
Congratulations @Iamnotacerealkiller

prettybird · 01/06/2019 22:28

Fuck Load of Green Veg Smile

Summery1 · 01/06/2019 23:27

I'm not sleeping great. I woke early and couldn't get back to sleep. Grr. I feel sluggish all day.
I did swim this morning so I'm doing ok with exercise.
B: 2 poached eggs, hollandaise, mushroom, ham. Coffee with cream.
L: Baked hake with broccoli
D: ham cheese coleslaw.
Half a rice cracker with peanut butter.

Also discovered Pork Scratchings in Aldi. I ate a WHOLE packet!😳
A portion is 1/3 of a packet. 🙄

I find it hard to control when I'm tired.

Summery1 · 01/06/2019 23:28

Thanks for the Coronation Chicken and biscuit recipes. They sound lush.

MrsBertBibby · 01/06/2019 23:48

Awww congrats, cerealkiller!
