Week 3 - Sumer 19 Low Carb Bootcamp - Bootcamp Light?

BIWI · 27/05/2019 08:09

Morning all. Today sees the start of week 3, which is when you can, if you wish, move on to Bootcamp Light. This means you can now introduce some fruit, some nuts and seeds and alcohol in moderation.

Note the bold formatting!

However you don't have to move on to Bootcamp Light if you don't want to. If it's working for you, then by all means stay on Bootcamp. Some people choose to do Bootcamp during the week but take a more relaxed approach at the weekend.

Here are carb counts for fruit - you can see that most of them are pretty high. These are taken from Sainsbury's website and show the amount of carbs per 100g:

Canteloupe melon 4
Raspberries 4.6
Blackberries 5.1
Galia/Honeydew melon 5.3
Passion fruit 5.8
Strawberries 6.1
Watermelon 6.8
Peach 7.5
Plums 8.8
Papaya 8.8
Nectarine 9
Blueberries 9.1
Pineapple 10.1
Kiwi 11
Apples 11.8
Mango 14.1
Lychees 14.3
Grapes 17
Pomegranate seeds 18.7
Banana 23.2

When it comes to nuts and seeds, these too vary widely:

Brazils 3.1
Walnuts 3.3
Pine nuts 4 (but beware - toasted pine nuts are 10)
Macadamias 5.3
Pecans 5.8
Desiccated coconut (technically a fruit!) 6.4
Almonds 6.9 (smoked almonds are 7.7)
Monkey nuts 9.3
Peanuts (salted) 10.9
Fresh coconut (from the chilled cabinet) 15.2
Cashews 18.1

(These carb counts for either salted or unsalted)

Seeds:

Sesame 0.9
Poppy 4.7
Chia 8.6
Pumpkin 15.2
Sunflower 16.4

As far as alcohol is concerned, the best drinks are clear spirits (gin/vodka/whisky/rum) but you need to be careful what mixer you're using. Soda is by far the best option, but if you want something else, you'll need to go down the artificial sweetener route to keep the carbs low.

Dry white wine and Champagne are OK, and red wine. Avoid beer and cider.

venusandmars that’s funny about the American guy.

When I first started LCHF my husband—think tall, naturally lean—didn’t need it. By the time I did it again with bootcamp, age had caught up a bit, as had numerous business dinners, and the weight showed on his face and mid-section, so he came under My tutelage. Wink

The first month all he did was come back to report how he’d spotted several low carbers at this or that event. And he now rails passionately against the food (croissants, biscuits, always with the fecking sandwiches) provided at business meetings.

It’s been very entertaining.

Anyway, he’s out and about in London all the time and can give great recommendations for slow food or fast food that works—Leon and Pret being the current favourites.

@BIWI, if you want to put off the expense of buying new pans for a while, you can buy these inexpensive converters. It’s worth checking diameters of pans and hobs to ensure max heat getting to land.

which is where I have blown up every single time recently.

Well, how about you just don’t it this time, Athelstane? How about you set yourself an additional goal of 5-10 lbs (or whatever) and then allow yourself to blow up if you want to? Ya know, as a reward.

Heartyhooker free eggs?? That’s LCHF gold dust. Take those children to farm every day!

Still only 5lb though - a long wee way to go to get back to where I was last summer, let alone where I'd got to at Christmas blush

Stop beating yourself up, prettybird Flowers

ShagMeRiggins · 30/05/2019 18:30

Hey ShagMe, how’s it going?

ShagMe: Well, it’s a bit lonely here as I’ve realised the last four or so posts have been me talking to myself.

Oh, don’t worry, you’ll get loads of replies later when you’re zonked on the sofa with your bra off and unable to reply.

ShagMe: Ah, right, got it—everyone making luscious food right now. Cheers.

Youwanapizzame · 30/05/2019 18:39

Hey @shagmeriggins.... why cant you reply with no bra? Are you typing with your bazoomas?

The Tom Yum soup with prawns was amazeballs. Really lovely and not too off plan.

prettybird · 30/05/2019 18:41

Telling off taken Shagmeriggins Wink

I'm not actually beating myself up - I'm just impatiently looking forward to wearing the nice dresses and skirts that I got back into wore last summer Smile But it's perishing here at the moment - so I'm not wearing them in the near future anyway Grin

Duck breasts tonight with asparagus (roast potatoes for dh and ds). I'll also take my first cutting of my cut and come again "bright and spicy" salad leaves (mix of mizuna, pak choi, rocket etc) from the garden Smile

ShagMeRiggins · 30/05/2019 18:54

prettybird I have very much missed your complete dedication to use of mumsnet formatting.

Youwanapizzame I type with my nipples, actually.**. No, of course not, ha, but the key word was “zonked.” I shall probably be asleep when everyone else is chatting away!

**no idea why I said that. Doesn’t even make sense. Leaving it in though.

m0therofdragons · 30/05/2019 18:54

@ShagMeRiggins Grin

My dh is not giving up carbs. Tonight we have just had sirloin steak with green veg but did potato wedges for dh, completely burned on one side because I forgot but he still ate them Shock

Heartyhooker · 30/05/2019 19:00

@Shag me sadly, just free range and definitely outside as wondering about with the alpacas. We are all at sixes and sevens here as no one hungry after pub lunch. Except for ds2 whose desire for a pet pig hasn't stopped him having a sausage sandwich

Rayna37 · 30/05/2019 19:17

B: 2 eggs scrambled
Babybel and some pecans and almonds
L: mozzarella and pesto on salad; yogurt with almond butter
a handful of Minstrels I was given at work FFS
Pork stroganoff from the recipe thread with some green beans and broccoli. This was delicious and I was excited to have a nice easy new recipe until I realised the sauce was basically the same as the one I normally make for pork only with paprika in place of wholegrain mustard.
Will do better tomorrow.
Also excited to share really quite dull news I bought 6 mini caleriacs reduced to 9p each in Sainsbury's. Perfect!

RocketPockets · 30/05/2019 19:21

@Heartyhooker thank you so much! Cauliflower cheese is a great idea!! I will look for a recipe tonight 😊

Ninkaninus · 30/05/2019 19:24

😆😆 at MNetting with one’s nipples...

Lunch today was a leftover chicken thigh in butter chicken sauce, with leftover roasted broccoli, cauliflower and carrots.

Dinner is going to be beef/pork mince in a garlic/chilli tomato sauce, with artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, olives and roasted aubergine.

m0therofdragons · 30/05/2019 19:25

@Heartyhooker you're lucky. Dd is 7 and hasn't eaten pork since she was 4 because of her obsession with pigs. Luckily she's not generally a fussy eater so I do let her stay pork free. Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 30/05/2019 19:34

My name is Fiona Charming and I have a confession to make...

I hate water. I really struggle to drink 2L a day, let alone 3. So I thought I could get away with drinking flavoured water, as it doesn’t have any carbs. But alas, my weight loss has completely stalled, and on googling it turns out sweetners also mess with your insulin response. Very annoyed with myself for not just forcing the water down, as that’s 2 weeks wasted.

Heartyhooker · 30/05/2019 19:35

@MotherofDragons ds2 tried the 7day vegan challenge he lasted a day and a half and the only thing he likes was the vegan chocolate!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 30/05/2019 19:45

which is where I have blown up every single time recently.

Well, how about you just don’t it this time, Athelstane? How about you set yourself an additional goal of 5-10 lbs (or whatever) and then allow yourself to blow up if you want to? Ya know, as a reward.

I didn't do it, Shaggy my friend! Grin Grin Grin Not yet anyway. All through trickery. Deliberately left work 5 mins late so had to run for train, so avoiding the M&S at the station. Had to call in at the shop for cream so (as a distraction! don't judge me!) pretended to be Steve McQueen buying cream so was too preoccupied to dither around the unsuitable aisles. And stuffed my face with roast chicken as soon as I got home, as I'm never tempted after dinner.

Just need some new tricks for tomorrow...

ShagMeRiggins · 30/05/2019 19:51

Athelstane that’s good trickery. Keep it up. And well done.

ShagMeRiggins · 30/05/2019 19:53

MrsFionaCharming have you tried using cucumber or mint for a flavour blast in water? Or even rhubarb? I’m told it’s a vegetable...

Waswittyonce · 30/05/2019 20:01

@BIWI Ohh! Exciting times! I managed for months with a two burner camping stove while we saved up for a cooker. It was 20 odd years ago so don't remember if I had a microwave or not, it's surprising how you adapt!

mrwalkensir · 30/05/2019 20:05

ooh - courgette, bamboo shoots and mangetout v good in a green thai...(also have water chestnuts in the cupboard)

Youwanapizzame · 30/05/2019 20:07

Ha ha Shagme I knew it was the tired but but it chuckled me.

Mrsfiona I put fruit tea bags in cold water and it comes out like fruity water. No sweeteners. I tried a twinings buttermint today it was awesome...

ShagMeRiggins · 30/05/2019 20:15

It “chuckled” me too, youwanapizza. Great turn of phrase.

Not enough water yet today so chugging that now. Breakfast was skipped, lunch was spare—a squeeze cheese on low carb crackers, the whole thing was fairly pitiful—and dinner is my homemade lasagne with courgettes and shallots and garlic and barely any tomato at all. So at least one good meal today.

Have been around to three of four shops collecting food for what promises to be a beautiful weekend, so better meal planning and eating for the next few days.

WATER!!!

MrsBertBibby · 30/05/2019 20:32

Ouf today was hard work, letting the boy have cakes and crisps and dried mango while I stuck to my boiled egg and similar delights. Eating low carb vegetarian is hard on the move!

I did it though. Go me.

The Anish Kapoor stuff was fab, but all those reflective, distorting and magnifying surfaces don't half show you how much more you have to lose!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 30/05/2019 21:20

Another night where I'm not that hungry! I skipped breakfast this morning as I had a client lunch - halloumi fries with aioli and smoked haddock with spinach in a creamy mustard sauce. Creamy coffee in the afternoon.

Am embracing it. Having a couple of M&S rollitos.

MrsBertBibby · 30/05/2019 21:25

Halloumi fries. Who knew those were a thing!
