Week 3 - Sumer 19 Low Carb Bootcamp - Bootcamp Light?

BIWI · 27/05/2019 08:09

Morning all. Today sees the start of week 3, which is when you can, if you wish, move on to Bootcamp Light. This means you can now introduce some fruit, some nuts and seeds and alcohol in moderation.

Note the bold formatting!

However you don't have to move on to Bootcamp Light if you don't want to. If it's working for you, then by all means stay on Bootcamp. Some people choose to do Bootcamp during the week but take a more relaxed approach at the weekend.

Here are carb counts for fruit - you can see that most of them are pretty high. These are taken from Sainsbury's website and show the amount of carbs per 100g:

Canteloupe melon 4
Raspberries 4.6
Blackberries 5.1
Galia/Honeydew melon 5.3
Passion fruit 5.8
Strawberries 6.1
Watermelon 6.8
Peach 7.5
Plums 8.8
Papaya 8.8
Nectarine 9
Blueberries 9.1
Pineapple 10.1
Kiwi 11
Apples 11.8
Mango 14.1
Lychees 14.3
Grapes 17
Pomegranate seeds 18.7
Banana 23.2

When it comes to nuts and seeds, these too vary widely:

Brazils 3.1
Walnuts 3.3
Pine nuts 4 (but beware - toasted pine nuts are 10)
Macadamias 5.3
Pecans 5.8
Desiccated coconut (technically a fruit!) 6.4
Almonds 6.9 (smoked almonds are 7.7)
Monkey nuts 9.3
Peanuts (salted) 10.9
Fresh coconut (from the chilled cabinet) 15.2
Cashews 18.1

(These carb counts for either salted or unsalted)

Seeds:

Sesame 0.9
Poppy 4.7
Chia 8.6
Pumpkin 15.2
Sunflower 16.4

As far as alcohol is concerned, the best drinks are clear spirits (gin/vodka/whisky/rum) but you need to be careful what mixer you're using. Soda is by far the best option, but if you want something else, you'll need to go down the artificial sweetener route to keep the carbs low.

Dry white wine and Champagne are OK, and red wine. Avoid beer and cider.

Oh Owl you must do roast beef with celeriac remoulade! It’s soo good.

Youwanapizzame · 30/05/2019 09:48

waves @MrsBertBibby from my office in the next town! Have a good day!

So I'm very excited today about my new tea bags! Twinings were on offer in Tesco last week to I got Buttermint and Mango/strawberry. OMG the butter mint are lush! I just put them in cold water and I've drunk nearly a whole bottle already! HIGHLY recommend!

B - Sausage and bacon
L- tom yum soup (hopefully)
D - Day three of the NORMOUS pork roast...

see you later losers :D

venusandmars · 30/05/2019 09:55

Away with work at the moment - had a very funny moment at dinner last night. I was sitting next to an American man, who I hadn't met before. We were eating a fixed menu 8 course tasting menu with canapes (which despite the lack of choice I usually find is mostly OK on a low carb diet as it has lots of butter cream etc, the concentration is on the small bits of protein, and virtually no carb, potato, pasta etc.)

I noticed that the guy next to me ordered gin and soda when his other colleagues had beer, then when they brought the delicious looking breads he nibbled a miniscule piece obviously couldn't quite resist but mostly was eating just the butter, little chunks sprinkled with salt and pepper. One course came with a small dollop of mashed potato which he left.... You're getting the picture? He ate the cheese course with the celery but left grapes and biscuits, and the came the 2 puddings, desert and pre-desert. The man asked if I like desert (he was going to offer me his)? to which I answered that I didn't really eat sugar, and in any case would usually rather have a starter than a pudding, and he told me he was on a sort of diet. I think I already knew that Grin

We had aa great discussion about lchf and how good it made us feel,I think he was a bit stunned that he'd travelled all the way from US to a remote corner of Scotland and found himself sitting next to random woman who understood about ketosis!

When the deserts came, the others in his group were all telling him that the lemongrass 'cheese' would be fine, or that the wild herb sorbet was OK because, in their opinion, 'neither of them had any sugar in'. The man and I had the tiniest half teaspoon of each, and were just about spitting it out because it tasted so over sweet. How tastes change.....

MumbleLumble · 30/05/2019 10:03

Do any of you exercise too? I used to run but a bad knee stopped that. I miss it and want to replace it with something else but I just don't feel like I've got any spare energy.

I also can't just weigh once a week. I've lost nearly 2lb since Monday yay Grin It's very motivating!

MrsBertBibby · 30/05/2019 10:03

Thank you Alma and World for your celeriac tips!

MrsBertBibby · 30/05/2019 10:06

Could you get some walks in Mumble? Any kind of country walking will energise you. Great therapy too.

I have got some good swims in recently, once I start it just keeps flowing.

Your mind is lying to you about no energy, you know.

MumbleLumble · 30/05/2019 10:07

Venusandmars, great story! I love hearing about weird coincidences like that. It must have been nice to talk to someone who actually understood instead of getting those 'oh so you're on one of those fad diet' looks. I'm not bothering to tell anyone now as I can't be bothered explaining.

MrsBertBibby · 30/05/2019 10:22

I have been telling my colleagues, they looked at me as if I were mad (and that office runs on cake and toast) but they are goggling at the weight loss.

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 30/05/2019 10:37

Not a great couple of days, really struggling with period pain and kids are really getting me down. Up a kg since yesterday, properly bloated too. Just want sweet stuff, I've had the odd bit of dark choc but apart from that I've resisted.
Just had some breakfast and then I'm hoping to get them out for a bit to the park, hoping it lifts my spirits a bit to be outside.
Im definitely going to look for buttermint tea in tesco though, I've been looking everywhere for it after they stopped doing it in sainsbury, I love it!
Food shopping in a bit, will try to find some stuff to inspire me.

Ninkaninus · 30/05/2019 10:42

🌷 I’m on my period too though thankfully no pain - a very welcome byproduct of low carbing for me. In fact, because I had absolutely no cramping leading up to it I didn’t make the connection that that was why I have felt sad and moody and emotional over the past two days.

If this is your first time lowcarbing you might still find that it resets your periods and you won’t get cramping or pain in the future (one can hope!). But I know how rough that can be. Well done for staying strong.

SittingontheSidelines · 30/05/2019 12:14

Thanks @ShagMeRiggins Sadly no Waitrose in these backwards parts, just Tesco, Morrison's and Lidl. No I don't know what season they are either but I've always bought them before in Tesco. We love them so very sad there's non around.

BIWI · 30/05/2019 12:18

@MumbleLumble
I just don't feel like I've got any spare energy

If you really do feel like this, then this would suggest you're not eating enough fat or drinking enough water!

I go to the gym twice a week for a PT session (so no taking it easy!) and I always train in a fasted state. Similarly when I was running, I never ate before a 5K run and never had any issues.

@venusandmars it's great when someone else 'gets' it!

@MrsBertBibby there's no easy or elegant way to deal with a celeriac Grin. I slice both rounds off, then stand it on the broadest base and use a big knife to just hack the skin off, with downward strokes. Then trim off the bits I've missed.

Thanks, all for the cooking suggestions. I'd forgotten about that IKEA induction hob - although I think it will mean I'm going to have to buy new pans for it, as mine aren't suitable. But I'm going to have to do that anyway, as my new kitchen will have an induction hob.

I'm excited and terrified about the new kitchen in fairly equal measures. I've been waiting for years to have a new kitchen, but could never afford it. And despite a fairly heft budget, it's looking (probably inevitably) like it's going to exceed that by some way. I've been wrangling with the architect and have wrestled some of the costs down so hopefully it's bearable.

But there's no getting away from the fact that for 8+ weeks it's going to be pretty disruptive. DH hates disorder and mess and is already a Man Behaving Badly about things. Confused

Well I tuned in to the thread just in time earlier! Have been out doing errands in town today for going away at weekend and was just waiting in carpark for dd when I read youwannapizzme’s post about buttermint tea.
Was covered by the parking just long enough to leg it across to Waitrose where (sound of heavenly angels) they had some waiting for me on the shelf. Am out again shortly but am looking forward to some kind of near spiritual experience trying it later Grin

MumbleLumble · 30/05/2019 12:37

Mrsbert, thanks I have dogs so already do plenty of walking. I might give swimming a go though. The local pool is at the top of a very steep hill too Grin

BIWI, thanks, I'm definitely drinking enough water. I've always been a big water drinker though so maybe I need more than the suggested amount? Have you got any suggestions about how to get more fat in please? I've been cooking near enough everything in coconut oil and butter.

18pagesfrontandback · 30/05/2019 12:48

We’ve been back and forth for years here trying to decide whether we want to extend or just renovate, whilst increasing budget as much as poss. Add in to the mix more recent chat about moving to be closer to ageing parents and we’re in a state where nothing is/has happened. I’m hoping things are coming to a head and we can just get TF on with it.

But as much as I’m desperate to get started, I’m so aware having lurked on the home improvement threads about what a frickin nightmare it can be once works start, that I’m already having palpitations thinking about it. So I feel your pain/pleasure BIWI especially with the man-baby stuff. Well at least that sort of chooses the role of calm/zen one for you eh? Might help you to cope better as you’re dishing out soothing words and calming advice to him whilst channeling your own advice Grin

Rshard · 30/05/2019 13:16

What about yoga mumble? Lots of positions that are gentle on the knees.

Love that story venus, cool that your paths crossed!

I’ve randomly found celeriac in my small local butchers sittingonthesidelines

That’s exactly what I did BIWI, used one of my new pans for the eventual induction hob on the portable one. I managed to do all sorts on it. A steamer was useful too. I did Xmas lunch for 6 in my temporary kitchen

Ninkaninus · 30/05/2019 14:01

Swimming is excellent exercise. All the benefits of resistance training but no pressure on your joints, very good for your lungs and heart, and your muscles get the full range of natural movement.

I really wish I could swim as I can no longer run due to longterm problems with my feet.

KooMoo · 30/05/2019 14:08

I’ve enjoyed a nice long black coffee whilst catching up on everyone’s posts. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

To the lady who put on 4lbs overnight but cant think why. You have my sympathies, I’m the same with a 3lbs gain (admitted I had 1 glass of wine and some nuts) although 1lb has come off again. I’ve my fingers crossed the other 2lbs will be off by weigh day.

venusandmars · 30/05/2019 15:14

Paperwork, dress, husband-to-be. Anything else we can improvise (and I always travel with Bluetooth speaker for music, handfasting ribbons, candle and matches, quaich, whisky.... Never know when someone might need an emergency wedding Grin And of course ma is bringing her recently polished triangle

venusandmars · 30/05/2019 15:14

Oops wrong thread Blush

Almahart · 30/05/2019 15:41

Hallo all. Fighting children here.

Had a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs with melted gruyere, lunch was avocado, bacon and asparagus spears.

Now in trampoline park with a tea with soya milk

AthelstaneTheUnready · 30/05/2019 15:57

What are you up to, Venus!? Shock Grin

Am at dangerous point here - back at interim target yesterday and this morning, which is where I have blown up every single time recently. Need some extra determination to get past it. Not getting home until late today, so if I can just avoid the wine/crisps on the train I should be OK. Not hungry at the moment, but frankly, it's not hunger that causes the blow ups.

Ooof.

Heartyhooker · 30/05/2019 16:13

@RocketPockets I am on permanent nights and fine having a breakfast type meal at about 3amish and then not eating before I go to sleep works best. I really struggle with hunger the day after mostly split nights, which I am guessing is messed up hormones, so I have comforting low carb dishes like cauliflower cheese. Greek Yoghurt or boiled eggs seem to be ok. For me the main thing is not to eat an extra meal because I'm awake!

B almond\ egg\ cheese pancakes
L scampi and undressed salad with mayonnaise. Pub lunch in a chain with kids and my Mum which was all pre prepared and various rubbish options so tea is going to be mainly green veg if anything. Really full at the moment.

On plus side got loads of cheap free range eggs from the farm shop, where it was a very reasonable 50p per child to look round and feed the animals . They got a bag of food each. Ds1 wants a pet goat now though

SittingontheSidelines · 30/05/2019 16:28

@venusandmars Grinread that four times before giving up trying to understand it and then seeing not meant for us.

Was hungry by 10am after skipping breakfast. I think it was the chocolate birthday cake smell that did it, so had a curried turkey and yogurt brunch. This meant that I wasn't hungry at lunch time so wasn't at all tempted by the kids party lunch and cake. Brilliant. Still not hungry but think I will be by dinner time when I'm having my corned beef fantasy fulfilled by dh.

ShagMeRiggins · 30/05/2019 17:15

MrsBertBibby re peeling celeriac, I’ve recommended these in the past. Fecking lifesaver.

Mine is from Pampered Chef with a curved blade, which is great for rolling over herbs for chopping. Also good for potatoes, swede, and other bloody annoying root vegetables.

I use it to turn the celeriac into a bit of a square (bumpy hairy shite chopped off), then proceed to cut large cubes. Sometimes I have to bang it down into the cutting board, but damn it’s quick.

Strongly recommend this style rather than the knife style with single blade & handle not connected.

Google “crinkle cutter.”
