"Courgette is a perfect low carb veg - not sure why you thought it would be high carb? And it's a great substitute for pasta."

Because I don't really know what I'm doing, @BIWI ! Confused

We usually use Kikkoman's at home anyway, so that's something.

I'm just about to post some stuff that you'll find helpful then Smile

I would like to join please. Need to lose 2 stone, but would be happy with one!

venusandmars · 11/05/2019 16:47

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I use cauliflower rice for sushi. You can buy it frozen for easy use.

I'm looking forward to the new bootcamp (and fingers crossed I won't get beaten with the big stick in my frist post) Blush Grin I've been on maintenance since the last BC, which has all been ok, but last week, with a new BC in sight, I was like 'the condemned man ate a hearty breakfast' and I went way off course.I even stole my grandchildren's pombears!!

BIWI · 11/05/2019 16:57

Preparing for Bootcamp

One of the key, most critical factors for success is planning and preparation. So this means:

  • making sure you don't have low carb treats/foods to hand (as far as it's possible)
  • planning what your meals are going to be for at least the next few days, if not the whole of the week. And that means all your meals, so things you would have at work as well, or on the go if you do a lot of travelling with work
  • go and shop for low carb foods and make sure you have plenty of easy things to eat and snack on that are low carb

What vegetables should I be eating?

When I start the first chat thread on Monday, there will be a link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, lovely and fantastically well created and managed by @AthelstaneTheUnready. At the bottom of the spreadsheet you'll find various tabs, all of which will take you to lots of great resources. One is a vegetable carb counter. Not only does this show you the carb count of various vegetables, it's also a counter - so if you want to, or need to, you can enter the weight of different veg you're cooking with, and it will work out how many carbs altogether.

I know that I say not to count carbs on Bootcamp, but when you're new to it, it can be helpful to do this, so you get an idea of how many carbs you're eating.

The carb counter is also very helpfully colour-coded - so anything green you can eat without having to worry about, anything amber is 'eat with caution/only occasionally' and red is - 'go very easy or avoid as much as you can!'

I've copied it for this post - the colours and formatting won't work on Mumsnet, for which apologies, but it does show you the carb counts of the different veg:

Mushrooms0.4
Watercress0.4

The Big Stick. It's a joke. Or is it?

Low carbing is not a very forgiving way of eating. It isn't like low calorie or low fat dieting, where you can compensate at one meal for overdoing it at another.

If you cheat, it won't work. It's as simple as that. So you need to be prepared for that, and to recognise that if you're going to join Bootcamp you have to be committed to eat low carb food at each meal.

For this reason, please make sure that you have read the rules, and that you are following them properly..

Posting your daily menus can be really helpful - for you to be kept accountable, but also for other posters to see what other people are eating.

If you find that things are working for you, and you post on the threads about that, I'll ask you to list out what you've been eating and drinking over the previous few days - this will help me (and others) to spot if there's anything you're doing that might be hindering weight loss.

I will not and do not sugar coat my posts if you've been cheating!

Over the years (I've been running Bootcamp for around 7 years now), this has become known as my Big Stick. And some posters have taken great offence at this.

It's never meant to be nasty or personal. But there's no point in me posting something like 'never mind, hun, these things happen, don't beat yourself up about it' because that isn't going to help you. I am not prepared to enable you if you're cheating or not following the rules!

So I apologise in advance Grin and I'll try not to be too brutal Wink

It's going to be drinking all the water I struggle with. I genuinely loath drinking water. It tastes horrible and makes me feel all sloshy.

I have more questions. Can I ask them here or should I save them for Monday's thread?

IStillMissBlockbuster · 11/05/2019 17:47

You can drink fruit tea I think?

BIWI · 11/05/2019 17:47

Ask away!

OP posts:
BalloonSlayer · 11/05/2019 17:52

I struggle with the water too, Greebol. It literally seems to go straight through me. I drink a big bottle then am constantly in the loo for the next hour; it feels as if I have cystitis. I am not exaggerating when I say my hands are not yet dry from washing them when I am busting again.

Nevertheless I am going to try to up my water as this is one of the areas I am particularly bad at.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/05/2019 17:58

Ok...

I was planning a stuffed mushroom dish for Monday's tea. It's Portobello mushrooms stuffed with more mushroom, pine nuts, parmesan, fresh herbs, olive oil and chilli flakes. Normally breadcrumbs too but obs I'll leave those out. Does that sound ok? Wasn't sure about the pine nuts.

My local farm shop offers "gluten free" sausages and burgers. Are they likely to be low-carb, do you think?

Is Quorn mince ok? I'm also trying to cook more meat-free meals (which seems may be tricky when trying to eat low-carb and trying to feed a fussy family)

Is a chicken curry with cauliflower rice ok?

Can I have hallomi? I love it.

When I'm allowed gin again, is Fevertree Light tonic ok or does it have sugar?

Am I really going to lose weight and not be hungry? That seems to good to be true...HmmConfusedGrin

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/05/2019 17:58

Sorry for the barrage of questions!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/05/2019 18:00

Oh, there's anchovies in the stuffed mushrooms too but I'm guessing they're ok?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/05/2019 18:08

Checked the Fevertree, it's sweetened with fructose so guessing that's a no!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/05/2019 18:09

And yes, @BalloonSlayer, I get that too with the water - never off the bloody loo!

BIWI · 11/05/2019 18:22

I was planning a stuffed mushroom dish for Monday's tea. It's Portobello mushrooms stuffed with more mushroom, pine nuts, parmesan, fresh herbs, olive oil and chilli flakes. Normally breadcrumbs too but obs I'll leave those out. Does that sound ok? Wasn't sure about the pine nuts.

Strictly speaking, pine nuts wouldn't be allowed in the first two weeks of Bootcamp - however, I've checked Sainsbury's website, and they're only 4g carbs per 100g, so in this instance (and assuming you're not using hundreds of grams of them!) I'd say it's fine - especially as you're not having breadcrumbs. Anchovies are fine.

My local farm shop offers "gluten free" sausages and burgers. Are they likely to be low-carb, do you think?

Very probably - this would suggest that they're very high meat content - but if there's no published nutritional data I'd still be wary. And with burgers, no need to buy them - the best burgers I've had/made have simply been with high fat mince, salt and pepper!

Is Quorn mince ok? I'm also trying to cook more meat-free meals (which seems may be tricky when trying to eat low-carb and trying to feed a fussy family)

Sadly no - not for Bootcamp. As well as containing carbs (4.5g per 100g), it's also a highly processed food, and we're trying to avoid these. Here are the ingredients of Quorn mince:

Ingredients

Mycoproteinâ„¢ (92%), Rehydrated Free Range Egg White, Natural Caramelised Sugar, Firming Agents: Calcium Chloride, Calcium Acetate, Gluten Free Barley Malt Extract

Is a chicken curry with cauliflower rice ok?

Well it depends what you put in the curry! But as long as you're not using flour or any other thickener, and the veg you're using in it are low carb, then this would be perfect. One tip - if you replace any onions with shallots it will be lower in carbs - onions are 7.9g carbs per 100g whereas shallots are only 3.3g. (Buy the echallion or banana shallots - they're bigger so much easier to peel!)

Can I have hallomi? I love it

Absolutely!

When I'm allowed gin again, is Fevertree Light tonic ok or does it have sugar?

After the first two weeks of Bootcamp you can introduce alcohol - in moderation! and clear spirits like gin, rum and whisky are all carb-free. However, the dilemma you have here is the tonic. Fevertree Light contains sugar, and each 150ml can contains 5.7g carbs. Alternatively you could have Schweppes Slimline tonic which is carb-free - but this contains artificial sweeteners, and we're really trying to avoid those on Bootcamp!

Am I really going to lose weight and not be hungry? That seems to good to be true.

Yes! I can guarantee this - assuming that you follow the rules! One of the great benefits of a low carb diet is that your blood sugars will be much more even, which means that you won't be hungry. In the Western world, your hunger isn't to do with having an empty stomach - it's actually controlled by the interaction/balance of three key hormones - insulin, grehlin and leptin. If you keep your carbs low, it helps to keep these balanced, which will mean you're less likely to feel hungry between meals.

In addition, this is a high fat way of eating - you will be eating high fat, medium protein and low carb - which means it's very satiating - helping you to feel full for longer between meals.

And all the other Bootcampers over the last 7 years or so since I started doing it will testify to the fact that you will lose weight, but will also be able to enjoy lovely food.

Smile
OP posts:
MrsBertBibby · 11/05/2019 18:50

You will lose weight. I am an atrocious dieter, but I shed 2 stone last summer over 3 months including bootcamp. It was a doddle, apart from the planning food ahead (extra hard for vegetarians to eat on the go). By the end I was really struggling to get 3 meals down, and that is so not me!

This summer I am starting from a lower place than last year, I put some back on recently (stress stress and more stress leading to epic crisp-fests) but I hope to get well under my end weight last summer.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/05/2019 19:00

Thank you BIWI (and MrsBertBibby for the reassurance)!

I'm not really a diet person - I've never had to be, as I seemed to be blessed with a high enough metabolism that just cutting back a bit on the treats was enough to drop the pounds, but post-kids and post-40 that doesn't seem to be happening and my weight is creeping up and up.

I'd sort of resigned myself to just being fat and happy (I love cooking and baking) but the realisation that my acting career isn't completely over has given me a bit of a kick up the backside.

Sorry for wittering on so much. I'll shush now.

BIWI · 11/05/2019 19:05

No! Witter on as much as you like - that's what these threads are for.

Very glad that your career is taking off again though!

PrimrosePhantasm · 11/05/2019 19:38

Forgive the stupid question, I’m very new to this. Are meats like ham processed or would that be allowed?

BIWI · 11/05/2019 20:38

Yes, ham is processed. It's allowed, but just don't have it at every meal!
