Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - Here endeth the first half!

Morning all.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope that the start of week 5 puts to rest the troublesome weeks 3 & 4, and we can get on with the job of losing weight from here on in!

Just remember that weight loss from now on will be slow and steady. Unless you have masses to lose, you should expect to see around 1-2lbs a week loss.

I hope that the scales, or the tape measure, are kind to you!

Here's to a great week

Thanks @Mimosa1 and @Dia2 Smile I’m pretty sure my scales are working. Maybe they were malfunctioning when they gave me such a low weight in week one!

Congratulations @YessicaHaircut that’s wonderful news.

I know what you mean @Mimosa1. It does feel like a slog for zero results at the moment, especially when you haven’t fallen off the wagon and you know you’re in ketosis.

For me I think it’s because I’m not eating enough fat. I assume I am, because I’m eating a bit of cream here, a bit of butter there, a bit of cheese here... but I think if I were to log my macros the percentage of fat wouldn’t be high enough. So I need to work on that.

I also read this (screenshot) and think this probably applies to me.

in that case, good you didn't see it before, nowlook!

I think I rambled on about this in a previous BC, but basically, if you're drinking alcohol (a toxin as far as the body's concerned) it deals with that immediately via the liver, which is also supposed to be dealing with the fat you eat. So the fat you eat gets stored away pronto, instead of being broken down and used.

The answer would seem to be only to drink without eating, which is a downward spiral to very bad life choices Grin, or only with no-fat food, so crunching on the veg I guess. Which is not the comforting, lovely, image of dinner we all know and love.

Basically, drinking's a bit shit for you*, no matter how you try to arrange it.

*not 'you' personally, although it does include you, but I typed "drinking's a bit shit for one, no matter how one tries to arrange it" and it just looked deranged.

Siameasy · 14/02/2019 13:08

That’s interesting Athelstane, I didn’t know that. I normally avoid booze because it leads to carb cravings plus I can’t stop at one!!

Has anyone found this WOE has helped their periods?
So I first got into low carb in 2009. I’ve not always followed it strictly tho and fell off the wagon a bit. But anyway ever since 2009 the ONLY times I’ve had period pains were when NOT low carbing. In my teens and 20s I had dreadful pains.

StuntNun · 14/02/2019 13:34

Haworthia you don't need to restrict protein for weight loss, only if you're trying to achieve ketosis. However if you're eating dairy several times through the day that could cause a problem since it is hyperinsulinogenic in some people which will interfere with weight loss in which case I suggest limiting to dairy to once or twice per day to see whether it makes a difference.

ShagMeRiggins · 14/02/2019 13:36

Well, drinking is a bit shit for one. But I certainly seem unable to stop myself. It’s not an issue in my life but it does bother me how reluctant I was to attempt something as simple as a Dry January. It’s making me question what I’m afraid of if alcohol isn’t there for me. No answers yet, though. Grin

We’re away Saturday for French weekend sans enfants so there will be alcohol involved, but we’re both LCHF so the food choices will be spot on. I’m considering a weekdays off/weekend on pattern after that. Or maybe an every other day. I don’t know but after Athelstane’s post I do realise it’s not doing the diet any good, even if it is good old vodka/soda or gin&slim.

In other news, having successfully planned and navigated very tricky eating situations this week, I find myself on a rare day off at home (in full control of my intake as it were) and only now getting around to my first glass of water! Blush

Also, I haven’t forgotten and will post the lasagne recipe at some point.

Is anyone else having issues with the preview function whilst in a mobile? Angry

Rshard · 14/02/2019 13:38

Lovely to hear your baby news @yessica!!

Siameasy · 14/02/2019 13:40

I find dairy-mainly cream, creme fraiche, mascarpone and certain hard cheeses- a bit “triggering” as in I get the same almost ecstatic feeling upon consuming it as I do with carbs
Weirdly mozzarella is so boring I don’t get it with that!

Dia12 · 14/02/2019 13:57

Lol @AthelstaneTheUnready, you're last paragraph just made me giggle!!

YessicaHaircut · 14/02/2019 14:04

Thank you for your kind words everyone. We haven’t told anyone yet as it’s early days so it really means a lot Flowers

BrassicaBabe · 14/02/2019 15:38

Congrats yessica

"The answer would seem to be only to drink without eating, which is a downward spiral to very bad life choices ". See now @AthelstaneTheUnready I could sooo manage that Grin

The day hasn't quite gone as planned. First meal of the day at 3pm. By which time I was starving. So please give me some wiggle room on my choices Smile

3pm lunch: left over mackerel burger, snack size pepperami, small bag of scratchings, 2 pre-sliced Gouda cheese rolled up with pate in the middle.

Planned D: roast pork or lamb plus buttered savoy. Cauli cheese would be nice but the cream always stalls me Sad

E: managed 4K. Sore calf

Lots of water and NO WINE (day #4)

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/02/2019 16:11

Had fillet steak! For lunch! On a plain old Thursday. Seemed so decadent. With stem broccoli. Both slavered in butter obviously.

I went out of my way to get it as I knew nothing else would do. I now wish I had also bought some stilton.

BalloonSlayer · 14/02/2019 16:15

Many congratulations Yessica what fantastic news!!! Flowers

Sorry everyone - not been online much in the last week or so. Fell off the wagon a bit and had some stress and drama going on. Back on the straight and narrow now though and already feeling better for it. I haven't put my weight into the spreadsheet this week as it's shot up due to the carbs, but will weigh again properly once the glycogen stores/water weight has gone down a bit!

Today I got some unexpected encouragement - I had a meeting with someone at work who I hadn't seen since September and the first thing she said was "Aren't you looking well! Have you lost loads of weight?" Grin. I was a bit embarassed, but quite chuffed too, especially since I feel a bit whale-like after my fall off the wagon. She WAS trying to sell me something though...! Grin

MrsKoala · 14/02/2019 17:32

Congratulations Yessica. That's such lovely news. Please please come back and update us on how you are doing and when the baby arrives. I love baby news so much (too much really!).

DH has returned with the most enormous bunch of red roses and a card. So now I feel like a monumental dick. I will make him a cake or something. I wish i'd got something nice in for dinner but its just slow cooker goulash and baby corn.

Doilooklikeatourist · 14/02/2019 18:23

@yessica , such lovely news

Can confidently repeat that the home made granola is very good 👍

DH decided against the M&S meal deal ( as there’s nothing suitable for you ❤️)

Today’s menu
B Granola , yog and a couple of respberries
L( stupid busy day ) hard-boiled egg grabbed out the fridge with salt on top
D fried fillet of salmon , green beans , cauli rice , home made salsa verde
Prosecco
Snack / pud fresh strawberries and double cream
Note to self
Needs more green veg tomorrow

Destinysdaughter · 14/02/2019 18:27

I’m on a low carb group on FB, saw this today and wanted to share this woman’s amazing transformation!

1stMrsF · 14/02/2019 18:30

Lovely positive news of babies, wine free days, yummy lunches and DHs that turned out OK Grin

L - chicken with Caesar dressing, with salad bar veg (leaves, roasted aubergine, raw cabbage, radish and cucumber)
D - Salmon stir fry

Finding this week tough to stay. Have had something to drink several days, although still overall drinking way down from usual habits. It's hard to eat enough fat at school, so I get hungry and low energy early evening. I need to think about taking salad dressing or something. Next week is half term though so I can cook at home more.

TowandaForever · 14/02/2019 18:41

@Notlostjustexploring

How are the shallots incorporated into your omelette?

Livelongandprosper · 14/02/2019 19:44

Congratulations Yessica! What great news.

Feeling much better today, have climbed back on the wagon.

B: bacon and fried egg
L: boiled egg, spinach and a spoonful of houmous
D: courgette, spinach, mushrooms and shallot fried in oil and butter, with some tinned chopped tomatoes and Parmesan cheese

Is this an ok day's food?

Only managed a litre of water so far.

WheelyCote · 14/02/2019 19:46

2 strips of pork belly and half a tin of mushy peas for tea

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/02/2019 20:25

Fuuuuuuuck. Just made a 'quick caesar salad dressing' but didn't have garlic powder so devided raw garlic would do. Pity anyone who has to come within 10 feet of me tomorrow.

On the upside at least I'll have killed off 99.9% of all known germs.

Amazing pics of FB lady.

BrassicaBabe · 14/02/2019 20:28

Dinner ended up as a decent lamb chop, with buttered savoy and green beans.

REALLY want a glass of wine. Nearly ready to cave. Can't decide my current opinion/position which isn't helping my dilemma. Hmm

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 14/02/2019 20:32

Talking of booze. I'm going away for a few days and drinks will be involved. I'm goingbto generally stick to gin/vodka for the low carb content but would like one really nice cocktail. What can I have that isn't too damaging? I don't usually go for juice based cocktails so that helps. Any suggestions?

nowlook · 14/02/2019 20:41

@SlinkyDinkyDoo Cuba Libre! White rum, Coke Zero, fresh lime. @BIWI recommended another one too, which I'll try and find if she doesn't shout up first.
