January 2019 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1

Well happy new year!

Here's a sparkling, brand new, Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for us all to get this new Bootcamp off to a good start.

Remember, you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to - and if you don't want to declare your actual weight, you can index it - which means that your starting 'weight' is 100. Then for every pound you lose, you take off one. So if you lose 4lbs in week 1, then your 'weight' starting for week 2 will be 96.

There are over 170 people signed up, so the thread will move very quickly - but please, please, please read all the posts. Don't just jump on and post your own stuff without reading what other people have posted. That's especially the case if you're posting with a question - read the thread to make sure it hasn't already been asked.

Have a good look at the spreadsheet and all the tabs at the bottom, as there's a huge amount of information there - not just the rules, but also the list of vegetable carb counts, and some really interesting reading/videos too.

I hope everything there is clear, but if not - just shout.

Looking forward to getting going!

Yes - but I haven't been eating more dairy since switching to low carb which is why it isnt my first thought. I've always eaten a lot of cheese and butter, I have low intake of milk, virtually no cream, yoghurt or ice-cream. Maybe my cheese/butter in-take is responding differently now I have low-carbs?

MrsFionaCharming · 19/01/2019 13:23

We’re away with friends this weekend. I resisted the pizza and garlic bread they all had for dinner, and the hash browns with the fry up this morning.

I did however, eat half a Dorito. The bowl was next to me, and it wasn’t even a consciousn decision. I didn’t realise until it was already in my mouth - which has made me realise how over eating has become a habit and not even something I enjoy.

m0therofdragons · 19/01/2019 13:58

Made it to the gym and went swimming. Bonus was free bottle of electrolyte water.

B: hard boiled egg and Swiss cheese
L: spinach tossed in butter with bacon and egg
D: sausages with veg

BrassicaBabe · 19/01/2019 14:29

I had a cooked breakfast out this morning. Sausage, bacon and fried egg. The sausage was supposed to be local, award winning blah blah. Reckon it was mostly bread. I can feel them sat heavily in my stomach 4 hours later EnvySad

Hi,Annie - last BC I did I really struggled with dairy. I luuuurve my cheese and cream, so didn't want it to be the culprit for my stalling, but actually when I cut it out for 10 days, my skin lost the blotch, my ecxzxczma round the hairline went, and I started losing again.

Just this week though I've noticed tiny bits of eczema on the hairline returning, and it's true that cheese is now a larger proportion of my diet, as I'm having cheddar almost every day. I'd say cut it out (as I'm going to) for at least a week and see what happens.

BIWI · 19/01/2019 14:32

@AnnieKenney. I haven't come across this before - but I know that dairy can exacerbate eczema, so perhaps it's something to do with proportions of food?

I'd try giving up milk, cream, yoghurt and cheese before you give up anything else, and see if that helps. (Butter should be fine)

I have a massive win (for me) to report, even though it's a non-event.

As of yesterday I've been desperately craving my usual weekend lovely couple of hours with a film, a bottle of wine, and a family pack of crisps to myself. Properly, nearly in tears, craving. I fought it all the way round the supermarket, and cracked so far as to walk up the crisp isle. Which is next to the wine isle. At which point I started behaving like a pheasant trying to cross the road. Picking things up and putting them down and changing isles and doing the same, and changing isles and doing the same... I am very glad I know no-one in that town, and I hope the CCTV was looking elsewhere.

But none of it came home with me thank god.

BIWI · 19/01/2019 14:42

Well done @Athelstane!!! Grin

Thank you!

I don't have a comfort problem with chocolate, or sweet things, but wine and crisps is my go to 'hug' when I'm a bit sad.

Am telling myself that wafting about looking slim and slightly tragic in a glamorous-stranger-with-a-mysterious-past way, is better than stumping about in a podgy, red-nosed, grumpy-faced way.

BIWI · 19/01/2019 15:13

I found last night very hard not to reach for the gin bottle, but it's a nice feeling when you know you've stayed strong! (Along with the clear head in the morning)

But after 12 days of no alcohol I was rather hoping that my sleep would improve. Apparently not. Had a shocking night last night, and it was well after 2am by the time I finally dropped off.

Thanks everyone. No cheese or milk for me for the next week or so...

BrassicaBabe · 19/01/2019 15:21

Damn you bullet journal and record keeping. Sad While I've been banging on about taking measurements I've just taken mine and looked back at the ones from last year SadSad The year seemed to go tits up about 6 weeks after I was made redundant

AthelstaneTheUnready · 19/01/2019 15:21

yes, clear head and un-puffy face - definitely worth it. My sleep's been enormously better for it, so I guess it must just be us lot driving you demented that's keeping you awake...

venusandmars · 19/01/2019 15:38

Well done @althelstanethe unready I was the same when I was giving up drinking, the number of times I would pick up a bottle of vodka, then go and put it back, then pick up wine at the end of the next aisle... 'like a pheasant crossing the road' describes it exactly Grin

@hefzi I like your reframing - undermining me not rewarding me - that will be my new mantra.

@whatthreewords I was low-carbing on my own last year (there wasn't a boot camp on to coincide with when I started). It was effective but really tough and the house was littered with little bits of paper as I worked out the macros. This is so much simpler, and since I'm a foodie it's nice to be on a thread talking about food - in a good way.

B - avocado
L - sardine and cream cheese pate with salad
D - cheese, cream and veg omelette with broccoli, cabbage, onion, shitake mushrooms

WhatThreeWords · 19/01/2019 17:18

@venusandmars it’s me, cristiana of old! Lovely to ‘see’ you again. I haven’t been posting on Mumsnet for ages. I hope you are well

My lunch changed - was shopping at Waitrose and picked up a ham hock terrine which had 1.9g of total carbs

I made padron peppers for a starter this evening- seems about 1g of carbs

Dinner is asparagus, kale, avocado, salmon and maybe some melted butter and lemon

ludog · 19/01/2019 17:27

I made the shepherd's pie which was a resounding success with everyone and a portion in the freezer for next week. Today has felt easier so I hope I'm over that initial hump.

tootstastic · 19/01/2019 17:47

Well I'm on my last night away from home and I've managed to stay on track. I fly home in the morning and I'll be so glad to get back to my routine, but delighted I've managed to navigate sticking to the plan whilst eating out.

There are some cracking sounding losses so far, well done to the losers and good luck for Monday morning to those not weighed yet.

I'll be interested to see if I've lost anything on the scales on Monday morning (I've missed my daily weighing whilst away).

Haworthia · 19/01/2019 18:07

Trying to think of some nice low carb accompaniments to a baked Camembert. I have some celery but would like something more interesting than that too 🤔

WhatThreeWords · 19/01/2019 18:14

@Haworthia how about lightly steamed tender stem broccoli

Haworthia · 19/01/2019 18:19

I was thinking that! I bought some purple sprouting broccoli today. But I still feel like something is missing...

...I mean, I know crusty bread is missing. Something else Grin

MrsTerryPratcett · 19/01/2019 18:25

Food has been OK for me.

I'm not sleeping well.

My run this morning was pathetic. Terrible distance, more intervals than I should have done and I felt dreadful. Tell me this will improve!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 19/01/2019 18:28

Could someone critique this recipe for me? Is it low carb enough?

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1162645/ricotta-tomato-and-spinach-frittata

I'm at home, alone, no witnesses, still ignoring the lovely artisan gin in the fridge...

nowlook · 19/01/2019 18:30

@Haworthia how about kale crisps, cucumber batons and cherry tomatoes? I think that those mini corn aren’t too bad either (unlike the tinned stuff).

Personally, I’d have broccoli, cauliflower and garlic mushrooms because it’s so cold today.

And celeriac if I ever get round to peeling the bloody thing!

nowlook · 19/01/2019 18:34

@UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea it says 7g per serving, but don’t know if that’s net carbs or not. Looks lovely to me!

nowlook · 19/01/2019 18:41

Perhaps swap the onion for shallots and, if you really want to bring the count down, mushrooms instead of tomatoes.
