January 2019 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1

BIWI · 14/01/2019 00:59

Well happy new year!

Here's a sparkling, brand new, Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for us all to get this new Bootcamp off to a good start.

Remember, you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to - and if you don't want to declare your actual weight, you can index it - which means that your starting 'weight' is 100. Then for every pound you lose, you take off one. So if you lose 4lbs in week 1, then your 'weight' starting for week 2 will be 96.

There are over 170 people signed up, so the thread will move very quickly - but please, please, please read all the posts. Don't just jump on and post your own stuff without reading what other people have posted. That's especially the case if you're posting with a question - read the thread to make sure it hasn't already been asked.

Have a good look at the spreadsheet and all the tabs at the bottom, as there's a huge amount of information there - not just the rules, but also the list of vegetable carb counts, and some really interesting reading/videos too.

I hope everything there is clear, but if not - just shout.

Looking forward to getting going!

@WhatThreeWords if you don't have scales take your measurements? A piece of string would work for comparison if you haven't got a take. Welcome too Smile

BrassicaBabe · 19/01/2019 09:37

*tape not take Hmm

Hanbu · 19/01/2019 09:42

Please could someone post recipe for spinach cream cheese breakfast muffins have looked through thread and can't find thanks

Collectorofcookbooks · 19/01/2019 09:47

Wow some great losses from sneaky peekers! Hoping mine will be as good.

Turns out we are in the midst of a celariac desert. Tried Tesco’s, Lidl and Sainsbugs last night - not a one of them sell it! I may have to go to the Big Town 😂

Did my version of chicken fajitas last night - DH had wraps, I had the chicken and veg mix on top of a pile of romaine lettuce - was yummy!

Bacon and spinach for breakfast today, boiled eggs for lunch, supper will be roast veg with halloumi.

Off to drink some more water. Also v bunged up! Found the same last bootcamp until my body had gotten used to all the veg, just keep drinking. Water, I mean.

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 19/01/2019 10:03

Oh dear lord. I am clearly not drinking enough water. The call of nature came and I have been stuck on the toilet for 15 minutes. It's 'there' but not coming out. I've resorted to an espresso in the hope that it whooshes through 😭

WhatThreeWords · 19/01/2019 10:09

Poor you @sheldonthewondershlong!

I found chopped frozen celeriac in Waitrose @collectorofcookbooks

Great idea on chicken fajitas with romaine lettuce to wrap

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 19/01/2019 10:11

The coffee worked, what a relief. GIANT poo. More water from now on.

Mimosa1 · 19/01/2019 10:20

Good tip on the strong @BrassicaBabe ! I didn't measure last boot camp and I was sorry about it later through it.

Just coming on to post a warning about exploded Babybels. It doesnt work the same with the non red varieties! I thought I'd try the orange (cheddar) and purple (Gouda) versions and they melted much more like regular cheese and the plate when I took it out of the microwave was boiling. Definitely stick to the regular RED ones or possibly microwave for a lot shorter time.

Thanks to whoever posted the tip on lacto free milk - I can't give up milky tea in the morning so will give that a go as almond milk doesn't taste right to me.

Mimosa1 · 19/01/2019 10:20

String, not strong

WhatTheFronti · 19/01/2019 10:35

Ok reporting in for Saturday....

B - Swiss cheese & proscuttio
L - caeser salad ( home made - no croutons, heavy on the bacon, egg swapped out for avo)
D - meatballs in red sauce ( everyone else had with spaghetti) with big side salad and extra buffalo mozzarella
W - about 3 litres
I feel a need to up veg this coming week bit sick of salads....

Out for brunch tomorrow, pre gamed menu but nothing really suits (everything is carbs/eggs or sweet!) so will be ordering side of bacon, haloumi and avo and compile my meal...😏

m0therofdragons · 19/01/2019 10:43

Food wise I'm feeling motivated today but exercise wise, less so. I downloaded the couch to 5k app but that's as far as I've got. Dc are at a party until 1pm so I could go swimming (which I enjoy but would need to sort bikini stubble first). Going to drink some water and see if I can find some motivation.

BalloonSlayer · 19/01/2019 10:54

Hey, just want to share that after 5 days I have lost 3lb, (OK not amaaaaazing) and . . . 2" off my waist, 1" off my hips and best of all 2" off my boobs!

I measured because I noticed that the last time I wore this bra I had a red groove worn round me by the end of the day because it was too tight, but I didn't have that last night!

Also I can see my midriff looks a bit different. Instead of looking like a D from the side I now look like a B. Which is actually less attractive, but never mind never mind never mind - it shows that something is happening. Grin

Rshard · 19/01/2019 11:05

I used to weigh in boots whatthreewords, was 50p.

Well done sheldon, you must feel so much better! I had similar and had to get a ‘softener’ from the chemist.

Some excellent results from those that have had a sneaky peek!!

AandL · 19/01/2019 11:06

@BalloonSlayer, or should I say BoobSlayer! Great to be more comfortable in your underwear!

Must be mindful of water today, easier to drink when I'm in work, as I kind of punctuate each task with a good glug...

Late breakfast of cream cheese pancakes - well these were a disaster, but tasted nice, like a mild omellete, my mix was super runny, are they supposed to make crepe style ones?
I had this with streaky bacon, hlaf an avo fried in thebacon drippings and a large creamy coffee.

Lunch will be egg mayo salad I think

Dinner will be out , going to a burger place, they do burger in a bowl, so I will get one of those and some chicken wings.

Day 19 of RED January, except I am just exercising every day. So will either go for a walk OR go to gym and do some running on the tm...

Dia12 · 19/01/2019 11:14

IT happened.
I had spent the whole day cooking and being really disciplined and psyching myself up for the dinner party last night. Everyone ate all the carby delights whilst I kept to the veg and protein. I even stuck to water and avoided all sweeteners. I was silently patting myself on the back. They all left, it was almost midnight, maybe even a full moon (?), we were clearing away, packing up food and something terrible happened - the tiramisu JUMPED INTO MY MOUTH 😱 - multiple spoonfuls.
I want to believe it was a poltergeist but I think it was just the greedy gluttonous moronic fatty that lives in my head and takes over my brain and mouth JUST when I've been doing so well. "Just one spoon" it said.

😩 I'm feeling very disappointed in myself. I'm ready for the stick.

AandL · 19/01/2019 11:23

@dia12, it was the self-sabotaging voice in your head screaming that you "deserved" it after being so good? But it was the lowest form of you, your "pig" , not your highest self...I am trying to paraphrase Dr Glenn Livingstone from Never Binge Again - his book (free on kindle) & podcasts are so good, I went from binging 2-3+ times a month to once since Dec 10th when my friend introduced me to his work.

I will putting my pig tightly locked in his pen this weekend as I have so much baking for family & friends to do!

Hefzi · 19/01/2019 11:48

Oh Dia I know that voice well! I've tried to reframe things as not "you've been good" but "you've been good to your health" and to see that little whispering voice as one that wants to undermine my efforts, not reward them.

It's so hard, though Flowers AND you stuck to the plan the rest of the evening, instead of caving all the way through: so today you need to get right back on it, and if you've been punished weight-wise for this, use it to help you stay on track next time Flowers

Putting off going in to the office today - I've got crazy days tomorrow through Wednesday, and know that it'll be even more shit if I don't do some ground work today Sad Thinking of bribing myself with a black Americano for when I have finished though Grin

Dia12 · 19/01/2019 11:56

Thanks guys @AandL and @Hefzi hopefully I can get back on track quickly-ish. Definitely going to work harder against that inner demon.

Thanks for the podcast reference @AandL, I think listening to something like that is exactly what I need. My binging habits are similar. Going to listen now in fact!

BIWI · 19/01/2019 12:14

It sounds like you're doing a good job of beating yourself up, @Dia12, so just this once the Big Stick will stay in the cupboard ...

But learn from that. Why did you do it? And more importantly, was it really worth it?

The weekends are always harder as everyone’s around, hoping the lovely delivery of low carb food will keep me going!

BIWI · 19/01/2019 12:16

Glad to hear about your giant poo @SheldonTheWonderShlong Grin

As some of you seem to be suffering as well, things that help:

  • really make sure you're drinking your water
  • eat even more fat
  • make sure you really are getting your carbs from veg/salad, and not other sources, to make sure you're getting the fibre that you need
  • strong coffee
  • high strength vitamin C
  • exercise/more exercise

Some good tips re. fibre here: www.prevention.com/food-nutrition/healthy-eating/g25922606/high-fiber-low-carb-foods/

I've been low carbing for a few months now and whilst I can't rule out other causes, I started to get outbreaks of eczema on my hands and legs about the same time as I started low carbing so am fairly sure it's diet related. I was eating more eggs than usual so I eliminated them for the past six weeks but to no avail. It comes and goes so I dont think it's anything I'm eating very regularly. I'm now cutting out seeds and tomatoes as the next most likely suspects but just wondered if anyone had any other ideas about what the cause might be?

AnnieKenney · 19/01/2019 12:41

PS I'm not usually a huge fan of sprouts (good source of fibre) but the first recipe here recipe is delicious: www.theguardian.com/food/2018/dec/22/brussels-sprout-recipes-to-win-over-the-haters

Haworthia · 19/01/2019 12:44

I was dying for a G&T last night, but I resisted. I took myself up to bed with my phone (it was cold so I was happy to get under the covers) to remove the temptation. Might have to do it again tonight Grin

AandL · 19/01/2019 12:45

@AnnieKenney Isn't dairy commonly linked to excema?
