January 2019 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1

BIWI · 14/01/2019 00:59

Well happy new year!

Here's a sparkling, brand new, Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for us all to get this new Bootcamp off to a good start.

Remember, you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to - and if you don't want to declare your actual weight, you can index it - which means that your starting 'weight' is 100. Then for every pound you lose, you take off one. So if you lose 4lbs in week 1, then your 'weight' starting for week 2 will be 96.

There are over 170 people signed up, so the thread will move very quickly - but please, please, please read all the posts. Don't just jump on and post your own stuff without reading what other people have posted. That's especially the case if you're posting with a question - read the thread to make sure it hasn't already been asked.

Have a good look at the spreadsheet and all the tabs at the bottom, as there's a huge amount of information there - not just the rules, but also the list of vegetable carb counts, and some really interesting reading/videos too.

I hope everything there is clear, but if not - just shout.

Looking forward to getting going!

Sorry, x post @Littleorangetree - thanks so much to you too. I completely agree with you - I wonder if it's like a sugar addiction or something? When I'm in the zone with this WOE, I only very, very rarely get the urge, and somehow, it seems easier to control when it's been a long time. I know if I can stick it out til Monday, it will be much, much better - and after next week, I'll barely be bothered by it. It's so weird how things like cream and yoghurt taste almost cloyingly sweet...

Moussaka sounds nice, BTW - hadn't thought of that: hmmmmGrin

Lost5stone · 17/01/2019 18:31

Hi all,

Its funny some of you have said about skin. I have been eating this WOE for a while and stopped December and my skin was so awful. DP had me convinced it was the gym Grin but it's so much better now must be the food.

B: Nat Yog and coffee
L: Ham and cheese salad
D: chicken stir fry. Had this with bare naked noodles (are these okay? Impulse buy)
E: hour of weight lifting. Hoping to add some yoga when DD is in bed.

Doilooklikeatourist · 17/01/2019 18:43

Bootcamp going well , as is dry January

Normally at 6pm on a Thursday I’d have poured myself a large glass of Sauvi B , but not tonight , oh no !

Unusual breakfast this morning , celery sticks with full fat philly and avocado
L homemade coleslaw with grated cheddar
D smoked haddock , spinach , cauliflower with creamy cheesey sauce

Glass of water an hour = visits to the loo every hour !

Cheeseandapple · 17/01/2019 19:02

Ah shit, I absentmindedly ate a slice of malt loaf earlier and then consciously had a hot choc today. I've been doing really well for 3 days, not hungry or too tempted by anything so I'm annoyed I couldn't control myself this afternoon.

Tomorrow's another day & I will do better but today was stupid.
B - 3 egg omelette with cheese and yellow pepper
L - salad with feta & boiled egg
S - will be roasted broccoli, grilled halloumi and spicy sauce of some description.

BIWI · 17/01/2019 19:07

@littleorangetree - where's your breakfast?!

@Cheeseandapple - stop trying to say you couldn't control yourself. You did. You made a choice to eat that. And why did you go on and have a hot chocolate? All you've done now is undo the good work you've already done this week. You have sabotaged yourself. It's nonsense to say you did it 'absentmindedly'. You knew you had picked it up. You knew it was in your hand. You knew you were putting it in your mouth. And then you knew you were eating the whole slice. And as for 'consciously' having a hot chocolate? WTAF?!!

You're right, today was stupid. And it will cost you on the scales.

You can't afford to do this on Bootcamp.

@Doilooklikeatourist doesn't look like you're eating much - and certainly not much protein going on in your meals. How come you only had coleslaw and cheese for lunch?

Interesting to hear about people’s skin being better on this woe, mine always is too.

Days 4’s eating complete
B - salmon scrambled eggs
L - curried cauliflower soup
S - greek yoghurt
D - hm cottage pie with swede on top, broccoli

Planning weekend meals, fajitas on Saturday I’ll have the chicken on a salad. Likely roast chicken dinner for Sunday.

After my semi disastrous lunch, I’m feeling quite virtuous now. DH texted me in the way home and asked me to pick him up some chocolate (he’s a complete sugar fiend but skinny as a rake. Bastard). I had to pop into sainsburys anyway but hadn’t planned to spend any time in any naughty aisles. Anyway, the desire for chocolate and pastry and all the bad things was there but completely resistable, and resist I did. Veggie fry up tonight (halloumi, buttery fried mushrooms, avocado, eggs). Onwards and upwards!

Cheeseandapple · 17/01/2019 19:19

@BIWI 🤭 by consciously I just meant as opposed to absent mindedly. With the malt loaf I was just chatting away with a friend, she offered and I accepted mid conversation and BC didn't even cross my mind until it was gone. When hot choc came around I hadn't forgotten about BC but downplayed it's significance.

Anyway, all that's neither here nor there. You're right, essentially I need to make the right choices and be accountable.

Darkbaptism · 17/01/2019 19:19

I had roast chicken for dinner tonight and used some of the juices instead of Bisto as that is carby, it wasn’t the same. Are there any low carb gravy?

NorthernKnickers · 17/01/2019 19:37

@Lost5stone me too...my skin has been awful since September (I'm mid-50's so no reason for this 😔) but is now starting to clear for the first time in months. Lots of bonuses 👍

Doilooklikeatourist · 17/01/2019 19:41

@BIWI , would you believe I cook in a cafe 😀
Had lunch at 3-30 ish , and didn’t want much as it would ruin dinner .
Should have had an omlette , but short of eggs ( got 90 arriving tomorrow, so should be ok for a few days ! )

BIWI · 17/01/2019 19:43

Ah yes. 90 will last you for a couple of days Grin

After my dog-walking excesses this morning, had to have a couple of boiled eggs with salt and mayo as a snack mid-afternoon. Lovely supper of chicken stuffed with pate and mushrooms with buttered greens.

I’m going to try celeriac tomorrow...is mustard allowed?

Trying not to think of it as only day 4, but rather another day closer to fitting in my clothes!

MrsTerryPratcett · 17/01/2019 19:46

Thank you all the people mentioning halloumi. I kept forgetting to put it on the list!

BIWI · 17/01/2019 19:46

Mustard is allowed!

I remember hearing an aesthician on one of my fav podcasts Forever35 saying the best (antiageing?)thing you could do for your skin was eat more fat

Notlostjustexploring · 17/01/2019 19:55

I would like a gold star for will power today on two counts. I cooked some delicious banana pancakes for my toddler today. Torturous to resist the smell, but resist I did. I then went to soft play and bought my toddler some toast. I swear it was taunting me, and because it was in quarters I was so close to, "it's just a quarter, can't hurt". I resisted and drank my black coffee instead. I then came home and had a massive plate of swede chips, pulled pork and mayonnaise which was absolutely delicious.

BIWI your words on self sabotage were in the front of my brain which definitely stiffened my resolve, so I think I owe not falling off the wagon today to your wisdom, so thank you!;

I also wish to confess a couple of fails today, due to not reading labels. The little cans of chilled espresso you can buy? Contains milk, which I only discovered after the fact and thinking it tasted sweet. The other was ricotta stuffed peppers, which although not the best, I thought would be a good snack. The sodding ingredients list contained sugar! Urgh!!

Cabbage, bacon and shallot fry tonight for dinner, with cream cheese stirred through.

Collectorofcookbooks · 17/01/2019 19:55

Thats good, I just had some with my steak!

Fried my steak, then left it to rest and fried a sliced courgette in the leftover juices with a smidgen more butter and a load of thyme. Lush! Had it with a big fish of roast veg.

Kids playing me up tonight - am resisting a lot of cravings!

Someone asked much earlier on in the thread how to cope with late night cravings. I meant to comment but forgot - I just completely ignore them by going to bed early! I’ve got some new books on my kindle which I’m really enjoying, so I go up early and somehow, once I’m in bed, I’m much less likely to come down again and raid the kitchen. Feels like a treat not a chore.

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 17/01/2019 20:00

Can anyone suggest how I could have made tonight's dinner more satisfying? Sounds good on paper, should have tasted amazing but was just so 'lacking'.

Stir fry with king prawns, shredded cabbage, courgette, mushrooms, shallot, garlic, fresh ginger, soy sauce and sesame oil (even threw in half a carrot for colour).

It just tasted thin and worthy. Had lump of cheese after to make sure I didn't choose to go off piste.

What can I have added? Butter/cream would have been horrible.

GerrysSuccessor · 17/01/2019 20:02

I deal with that ‘hmm it’s 9pm what can I nibble’ thing with a decaf coffee with thick double cream. Definitely does the job!

CassieStuart · 17/01/2019 20:02

Maybe some rice vinegar to give it some sharpness?

GerrysSuccessor · 17/01/2019 20:07

sheldon I have to say this is why I don’t really do stir fries on this WOE. I just think that without that sharp/salt/sweet combination of oriental food, they’re not worth having! And I struggle to make them fatty enough without being oily/greasy

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 17/01/2019 20:13

Think you might be right Gerry
