January 2019 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1

Well happy new year!

Here's a sparkling, brand new, Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for us all to get this new Bootcamp off to a good start.

Remember, you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to - and if you don't want to declare your actual weight, you can index it - which means that your starting 'weight' is 100. Then for every pound you lose, you take off one. So if you lose 4lbs in week 1, then your 'weight' starting for week 2 will be 96.

There are over 170 people signed up, so the thread will move very quickly - but please, please, please read all the posts. Don't just jump on and post your own stuff without reading what other people have posted. That's especially the case if you're posting with a question - read the thread to make sure it hasn't already been asked.

Have a good look at the spreadsheet and all the tabs at the bottom, as there's a huge amount of information there - not just the rules, but also the list of vegetable carb counts, and some really interesting reading/videos too.

I hope everything there is clear, but if not - just shout.

Looking forward to getting going!

blue, I've never eaten liver so I have no entrenched habits! I was thinking just the liver and shallots, and then some mushrooms with cream cheese and garlic if I'm still hungry.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 17/01/2019 12:35

MrsKoala, my DD was also very reluctant to give up breastfeeding - it was a real comfort thing with her and her way of reconnecting after a day apart.

We managed it at just before she turned three by a magical fairy bringing her a scooter if she could be a big girl. Grin

She’s 5 now and still tries to do the hand down the top thing when she’s feeling tired or unwell!

It’s amazing how skin clears up on this WOE - probably a combination of good fat and no sugar. My cellulite disappeared!

I’m also a celeriac fan - celeriac chips tossed in olive oil and paprika are just the best.

Collectorofcookbooks · 17/01/2019 12:54

Funny you should all be talking about great skin - several people have said to me today how good my skin is looking!

I'm not dreaming about carbs, but I am dreaming about smoking. Haven't had a fag in 10 days.

Still so bloody tired, in spite of 7 hours sleep last night. I have 5 year old twins and remember those days well @QueenOnAPlate - to be honest, it was my reliance on cake, gin and biscuits to get me through that means I'm doing bootcamp Grin

Love the brexit analogy @MrsKoala

B - FF yogurt with cinnamon
L - mushroom stroganoff with spinach
D - Steak with roast veg

I ate too much cheese yesterday, can't face it today - have had 2 boiled eggs as a mid-morning snack though.

Need to get more adventurous with my vegetables. Maybe I'll try the celeriac.

NorthernKnickers · 17/01/2019 12:55

Carb flu kicked in massively yesterday...had THE worst day 😢. Totally over it now I think (hope!!). I was horrid to my kids (teacher...30 five/six year olds bore the brunt...worst teacher ever? 🤦‍♀️) I've been extra nice to them today to make up 🤣😊

On the upside...4lb down already 😀

GerrysSuccessor · 17/01/2019 12:59

Urgh I think I’ve had a bit of a disaster today. I’m a teacher and have lunch duty today which means I get a free lunch (and we are skint so I can’t really afford to turn this down). There’s a decent salad bar here, usually some good lc options, but today it was just a bit rubbish. Low on protein options that weren’t combined with carbs. I loaded up with salad leaves etc but knew I needed some protein and fat otherwise it would all go wrong later. So tried to make choices as sensible as possible, no actual carbs (so no pasta/potatoes etc) and slathered with a creamy looking dressing. Just eaten it and it all tasted really sweet so think the dressing must have been full of sugar. I had to eat it anyway as I have no money with me and no time to get anything else, but it has left me feeling a bit blurgh.

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 17/01/2019 13:26

Can I suggest cooking the liver with baconand onions and having it with buttery shredded cabbage (and mushrooms too). This was a winter 'treat' in my house in the 70s served with mash. I LOVED it. Might have it next week, minus the mash, but might have to get a lesson from my mum as have never cooked it!

bibliomania · 17/01/2019 13:46

Thanks for the recipe idea, Sheldon, sounds good!

1stMrsF · 17/01/2019 13:50

Checking in. (bored at work)

B - avocado and hard boiled egg
L - ham and salad and coleslaw
D will be - smoked haddock, poached eggs and spinach

School lunch failed me today. Took some aubergines with my ham and the chef said 'honey roasted is that OK?' I thought he meant the ham and thought I could just cut off the edges, but he meant the aubergines, so there was honey all over everything. Sad

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 17/01/2019 14:08

Scales have arrived. Had to test them of course and they're telling me 4lbs down from my last weigh in (albeit different scales and a few weeks before I started bootcamp but I'll take that).

Very motivating!

Breakfast today was hard boiled egg mashed with butter and ham

Lunch is leftover spicy chicken thigh with salad and mayo

Dinner will be calamari rings (unbreaded if course!) and stir fry ginger/garlic prawns and veg (cabbage/shallot/mushroom/pepper)

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 17/01/2019 14:09

I do put paragrahs in - no idea why they never show.

Darkbaptism · 17/01/2019 14:48

Sheldon I can see your paragraphs.

Going well today, feeling less achy than yesterday thankfully!

MrsTerryPratcett · 17/01/2019 15:02

For those that haven't tried celeriac, give it a go

Remoulade for dinner in this house!

B- Egg muffins and avocado, mayo
L- Steak and buttery sauteed veg
D- Steak and blue cheese with remoulade

My skin is definitely softer. It's very weird. Is that the extra fat, or the lack of carbs?

bluelefant · 17/01/2019 15:09

@SheldonTheWonderShlong
I think I will go with your suggestion as I like buttery cabbage a lot and it seems the two may go well together.

If you never cooked liver before remember-no salt before it's cooked otherwise it will go very hard and chewy. If you cut it in fairly thin slices it will only take about 3-5 min to fry and I always add marjoram.

BIWI · 17/01/2019 15:40

I would think that even 5 minutes is too long to cook liver - it needs to be flash fried for a very short time to keep it soft and tasty

bibliomania · 17/01/2019 15:42

Loving all the liver wisdom!

BIWI · 17/01/2019 15:42

... but one thing to note is that there are carbs in liver, unlike muscle protein - 3.8g per 100g, so go easy on the portion size

Afternoon all, Happy that I am 2.5 lbs down so far, that's like 20% of my target!

Drank lots of water so far, adding lime, mint & cucumber makes it so nice its not a chore.

Todays menu
B - eggbites & mayo,creamy coffee
L - 2 roast chicken thighs + roast broc/cauli
D - rib eye steak, mushroom & spinach, ts brocolli

Dhs birthday and dd has baked him a cake, not sure I can swerve that without causing upset....will see...

VenusStarr · 17/01/2019 16:03

I'm here, quietly lurking. Joined bootcamp last year before my wedding and successfully shrunk my waist to get in my dress and dropped half a stone.

I started last week making some changes and have already dropped 5lbs, so very happy with that. Ideally would like to lose a stone in all, so feeling like that is achievable.

Well done everyone so far. I'm enjoying seeing what people are eating, giving me lots of ideas :)

Hefzi · 17/01/2019 16:13

Just popping in to say hi.

Yesterday and today I am having an enormous struggle with resisting the urge to binge (have BED) : it's all-consuming for hours at a time. I actually came home from work already today, as I was struggling mightily with the urge to go downstairs and raid the vending machine.

Thankfully, I have prepared at home to the last inch - but I've also changed into my pjs in case it starts up again, so I can't go out to the shops very easily. I'm chugging water whenever the urge starts, and hearing BIWIs voice asking me why I am wanting to harm myself Grin

I've had yoghurt today and yesterday - just wondering whether the lactose has kick-started something?

Lunch was veg and chilli that was so obscenely delicious that I'm tempted to have it for dinner too Grin

Rshard · 17/01/2019 16:15

Hi venus, I remember you!

Have to admit I’m skimming over the chat about liver.

Good day here again, cottage pie with a swede topping currently in the over - yum!

AandL · 17/01/2019 16:24

@Hefzi , have you read Never Binge again and/or listened to his poscasts, I found them super helpful

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 17/01/2019 16:34

You sound very much in control of the situation today Hefzi 👍

venusandmars · 17/01/2019 16:48

Hi venus from venus Grin

Littleorangetree · 17/01/2019 18:07

@Hefzi I also have BED and have found this way of eating to be the only way to get back control. After the initial couple of weeks, I found my tendency to binge completely go. Over Christmas I had a few days off-plan and I found myself starting to have those overwhelming feelings again. I think some of it might actually be sugar/carb addiction of some sort. I've also felt my need to use food to numb emotions has subsided too. The habit of turning to food when I'm feeling sad/lonely/stressed etc has reduced soooooo much and I also don't feel like food is a 'treat' or reward so much now. It's so liberating to finally feel in control after so many years!! (and the weigh loss itself has motivated me too).

B: coffee
L: Salad, egg mayo, salt beef
D: will be moussaka (IPD recipe) and some veg

Hefzi · 17/01/2019 18:15

@AandL no, I haven't - thanks so much for the recommendation: I'll check it out right now! I have tried Brain over Binge, which I know is brilliant for some people, but the only thing I have found that's really helpful so far is this WOE and OA.

Sheldon bless you! I've been beating myself up for being such a loser that I have to trick myself into doing what I want and need.

Thank you so much, both of you, for the support and the boost Flowers
