General Bootcamp Chat

Morning all

Here's a brand new thread, for general Bootcamp chat - it could be about low carbing, or about anything else you want to chat about.

It's Christmas Eve, and I'm wearing my Christmas pyjamas, and about to head into the kitchen for the last bits of prep I'm planning on doing. We're waiting for my BIL to arrive, and then rather than cook we're going out for lunch. Tonight will be buffet/party food, as both my DC are at work and won't be here till late.

I have a few more gifts to wrap - I discovered a bag of things I'd bought very early and had hidden, which I'd then forgotten all about! But apart from that, it's pretty much all done.

Tomorrow's menu is a simple one - we don't have turkey, but we're having roast fillet of beef. I've already made some red wine gravy, and just need to do the veg - which will be asparagus, peas and onions and (a definite non-Bootcamp treat!) potatoes dauphinoise.

So that's it from me. I hope all of you have a happy and relaxing Christmas and that [santa] brings you everything you want Xmas Smile

Hello, I'm bootcamp lighting for a week to get back into the swing of low carb then strict bootcamp from next week.

I have 99 days until I go on holiday at Easter and I'm to tight to buy new clothes. I will fit back into my summer things! I'm doing dry January, onto day 7 so drinking lots of water anyway.

Rshard · 07/01/2019 15:36

I find drinking my water much easier when I’m at work somehow, not sure why really.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 07/01/2019 15:59

I am back. For the millionth time. I think I lasted a week of the last one. But I do need to stick with it this time, and longer than just this week.

Meal plan so far:

Lunch every day - HM mushroom soup, yoghurt and cream

Dinners
M - Chicken Fajitas (no wrap)
T - Thai green curry (no carb element)
W - Pizza and Garlic Bread*
T - Probably a tomato-ey pasta sauce (with no pasta)
F - Omelette

Snacks
M+T - 2 sausages
W+T - cheese

  • Before you all kill me, come Wednesday I will have been without an oven for a full month. It has been a pain in the posterior, let me tell you! (Have you tried cooking a Christmas meal with no oven?????). I have got fed up of having to boil / fry / microwave everything, esp since I've been on my own, and tend to want to cook quick things, you know, just 'bung something in the oven'. Since the beginning of last week I have been craving pizza for that very reason. On Wednesday the engineer is finally coming, and hopefully I'll have a working oven when I get home. If it is, actually, working then I am throwing a pizza and garlic bread in the oven and celebrating. Sorry!!!!!
Notlostjustexploring · 07/01/2019 17:47

I'm also sticking my toe in bootcamp light in advance of next week, mostly to break myself in gently after the massive Christmas sugar load! I'm also trying to train myself out of the constant mindless snacking I've been doing for weeks, where as soon as I'm in the kitchen, I'm looking for something to munch on.

So yesterday I had salmon cooked in cream cheese wrapped in prosciutto with broccoli and cauliflower dusted with parmesan for lunch and chicken satay with roast veg for dinner. The satay is not bootcamp friendly due to the coconut milk in the sauce I think, although I think OK for light? I also had lots of spare sauce and I spread it liberally on some eggy muffin things I made. They were goooooood....

Low carb food equals tasty!!!

BrassicaBabe · 07/01/2019 20:34

Right. I've drunk a million pints of water. Zero alcohol. I've got a stinking cold and feeling rather sorry for myself. So I'd better wake up skinny after today's efforts! Going to bed

Justmuddlingalong · 07/01/2019 20:48

God, I enjoyed my dinner tonight. Roasted pork shoulder and cheesy baked cabbage. DP is trying to temp me with a ruffle bar, but I'm so stuffed I'm not remotely interested. 😇 My eyeballs are floating with all the water I've drank, but glad to be back to this WOE.

Notlostjustexploring · 07/01/2019 20:52

Cheesy baked cabbage? Sounds excellent.

Tell me more.....

I can also highly recommend tonight's dinner of sausage, halloumi and roasted veg.

Justmuddlingalong · 07/01/2019 21:01

Cheesy baked cabbage recipe.

1/2 white cabbage shredded
1 clove of garlic crushed
1 shallot finely sliced
Big knob of butter
Sweat all of the above in a pan until soft, about 15-20 mins.
Stir in half a tub of Philadelphia (I use the Lidl own brand) until melted.
Transfer to a shallow oven dish. Cover with thin slices of cheddar cheese (or grated if you can be bothered).
Stick in the oven for around 30 mins at 170 or until crispy and golden.

Also delicious cold the next day for lunch.

Hi all

Sounds like lots of you are doing well and many more gearing up to start on the 14th.

I've been KOKO since the last bootcamp (inc over Christmas), but I think I mentioned last time that I had stalled a bit with the weight loss? Well last Monday I'd only lost 0.2lbs in a week and this Monday just another 0.9lbs. It's still 33.3lbs off since 15th Oct though, so I mustn't grumble and I am still very much in the zone.

Still a colossal 97.7lbs left to lose, but I am so determined to do it, I really believe I will.

See you all on the new bootcamp thread on Monday!

Doilooklikeatourist · 08/01/2019 07:51

I’m doing really badly without the Bootcamp , had put on weight over Christmas , lost a bit , then put back on
It’s all my own fault !

So daft

I went to the cinema last night ( The Favourite, excellent film BTW , but not quite what I was expecting ) got home at 8pm , and had a pizza !

Roll on Monday ( though Ive weighed this morning , and I’m starting today ! )

KiteMarked · 08/01/2019 10:58

My new scales jumped 4kg between weigh-ins last week and this week.

Nooooo

ilovecherries · 08/01/2019 11:07

I’ve been hard-coring it since NYD, but my insomnia is terrible. I could cry I’m so tired, according to my garmin I’m getting about 3 hours of light sleep spread over the entire night, and that feels about right. I’m not hungry/thirsty/needing a wee etc etc. I just lie there with my brain fizzing all night. We already have a no screens in the bedroom rule, so I’m not sure what to do next. I’ve never been a great sleeper, but it got much worse for th first month on LCHF way back in 2017, stabilised a bit as I continued with it, but is now right back at square one. Nytol hasnt helped, neither has magnesium. I’m now eyeing up the piriton.

BIWI · 08/01/2019 13:02

Oh God @ilovecherries - you have my every sympathy Sad

I don't know what to suggest really - I just wonder if, perhaps, you're cutting your carbs too low?

Why not try shifting your carb intake to the last meal of the day as well? As carbs are supposed to help make you a bit sleepier?

OP posts:
Feelingfortyisntfun · 08/01/2019 13:48

I love cherries - this is exactly what happened to me years ago when I tried low carb. I think I had been very very strict at the time (was getting married and on the plus side lost loads of weight and went from a lethargic person to a slightly manic one). This time it didn’t happen but I didn’t know if it was because I wasn’t measuring the greens - alllowed quite a few veggies at night and made sure my evening meal had quite a lot of fat. I kept the food during the day very very low carb so that the extra bit of carb I did have was at night. I haven’t gone full on boot camp as yet though and this has been on my radar as a possible risk.

Years ago I decided to rebel and thought I must need loads of carbs to sleep and went back on full carb binge (ok it was an excuse). I did think this time I would try to be strict but if it got bad again I would save up my day time carbs and maybe have a little before bed.

You have my sympathies. It maybe you “fat adapting” and you may get used to it. I must admit if it happens to me for more than a few days I’ll add a bit of carb in. I also felt it was also quite a reveleation for me, as I’m such a sluggish person to find something that made me feel so wide awake. I also noticed I have previously gone into ketosis very quickly (when I was pregnant could only eat certain foods and my ketones were tested in hospital and always were the maximum! So it maybe you’re easily going into ketosis- I am not an expert in this area though).

Feelingfortyisntfun · 08/01/2019 13:50

Sorry meant to add, so it maybe we go into ketosis very easily.... I’ll be interested to hear what others think. Again big hugs loss of sleep is rubbish.

Feelingfortyisntfun · 08/01/2019 13:51

Oops biwi saw your response and basically what I said but in a few lines!

tootstastic · 08/01/2019 14:46

That's interesting @ilovecherries I too had the most awful night last night. My problem seems to be if I'm disturbed at all in the night, I can't get back to sleep. DD first woke me at 3am with foot cramps, then finally got her back to sleep and DH was snoring and I just couldn't get back off.

I even tried a late morning nap as working from home today thank goodness, but I didn't manage it and normally I'm a good napper.

I'd never put it down to the diet, but it does make sense. I do seem to have more energy generally, but wonder if I'm too LC.

@Feelingfortyisntfun I know what you mean about the manic thing. I've suddenly decided to totally redecorate tiles/walls/floors on the whole ground floor on a whim and there's no stopping me. I'm not complaining about the extra energy, but I do think I'm a bit more OTT than usual. I liken it to that feeling when you've over done it on the coffee.

BrassicaBabe · 08/01/2019 20:08

I've got a cold and I'm grumpy. I've been back on the wagon for a week and have lost 2lb. Was hoping for "quick on quick off" Hmm

No wine yesterday. Really want wine today. It should be simple shouldn't it; I want to lose this weight so stay off the wine. But the internal conflict is so much more complicated than that isn't it Sad

tootstastic · 08/01/2019 20:35

@BrassicaBabe Yes it's a bit frustrating when you're being good and it doesn't just fall off isn't it...I feel very hard done by after behaving over Christmas and it sticks, then comes off in literally tenths of a pound instead of the 2-3lbs a week I'd got used to.

I have to keep telling myself that the only way this weight will come off (and it bloody well will!) is to plain old KOKO. It's a boring thought, but it just has to all come off eventually, doesn't it?!

BrassicaBabe · 08/01/2019 21:00

Fingers crossed @tootstastic ! The last few months have just been such an uphill struggle. Especially compared with the first 12 months of LCHF.

I've let my mood take over today. I've way over eaten even though I've stuck to LCHF.

Need to give myself a slap

tootstastic · 08/01/2019 21:51

Tomorrow's a new day, put it behind you and start afresh Star

1Wildheartsease · 09/01/2019 00:00

I've got a cold/cough too BrassicaBabe - the second one over the Christmas period- and am just as grumpy/miserable!

Sticking to LCHF but keep hearing my inner voice telling me it won't work - I'm eating too much - I feel huge and heavy. At least wine isn't tempting me - it hurts my throat. Missing honey and lemon though.

BIWI · 09/01/2019 00:02

If food, eating and dieting was just about logic and rational thinking, none of us would be overweight!

It's totally bound up in our emotions and isn't rational at all in many ways. And you can't avoid it, like you can alcohol or tobacco or drugs.

So take comfort, if you like, from the fact that the emotional side of all of this is the hardest to conquer, and you're not alone.

BrassicaBabe · 09/01/2019 07:40

Today is a new day. Getting all my negativity out of the way so that I don't impact new BCers next week Grin

1/2 a lb off despite wine. Probably dehydration Grin

Rshard · 09/01/2019 08:19

You have my sympathies with the insomnia ilovecherries, you practically described my current sleeping pattern.

Starting my university course tomorrow, so excited - lunch is provided but I will take supplies with me just in case
