Morning all

Here's a brand new thread, for general Bootcamp chat - it could be about low carbing, or about anything else you want to chat about.

It's Christmas Eve, and I'm wearing my Christmas pyjamas, and about to head into the kitchen for the last bits of prep I'm planning on doing. We're waiting for my BIL to arrive, and then rather than cook we're going out for lunch. Tonight will be buffet/party food, as both my DC are at work and won't be here till late.

I have a few more gifts to wrap - I discovered a bag of things I'd bought very early and had hidden, which I'd then forgotten all about! But apart from that, it's pretty much all done.

Tomorrow's menu is a simple one - we don't have turkey, but we're having roast fillet of beef. I've already made some red wine gravy, and just need to do the veg - which will be asparagus, peas and onions and (a definite non-Bootcamp treat!) potatoes dauphinoise.

So that's it from me. I hope all of you have a happy and relaxing Christmas and that [santa] brings you everything you want Xmas Smile

I think it may be an indication that I did a bit of drifting (only cream, berries, a few raw nuts etc, nothing awful) because I am feeling as crap as I did right at the beginning now I’m back on strict bootcamp. (Complete with itch, pounding headache, and smelliness). Probably an indication that it’s really not worth it. I’d hoped that I’d have been more flexible by now, but c’est la vie.

Laska2Meryls · 04/01/2019 10:34

Last bit of the Christmas smoked salmon (though I'm going to buy more!) and 2 eggs for breakfast . Yum

Am making venison curry (with last of the Christmas venison out of freezer ) for this evening, with cauli rice..

BrassicaBabe · 04/01/2019 15:15

3lb of Xmas excess gone in 3 days. Sticking with RED January. Next week I can up my game by dropping the wine 😩 and drinking my allotted water (boring and yuck)

1Wildheartsease · 04/01/2019 17:31

I was thinking of treating myself to a copper water bottle to make water drinking more exciting. It is supposed to taste better and the bottle holds a litre - so is a helpful measure. Would I use it ?- I might.

Rshard · 05/01/2019 11:58

Well done @brassica

I’ve found a water bottle has helped me @1wildheart, I have a 1litre camelback but am tempted by one of the chill ones.

BrassicaBabe · 05/01/2019 16:45

I made a big veggie/cheese sauce thingy yesterday.

Mushrooms, pointed cabbage, leek, a bit of left over chicken with sauce made from philly, double cream and grated cheese.

Apart from the fact that double cream seems to stall me, I didn't realise that leeks were so carby. 14g per 100g. The same as peas according to my Calc. And more than carrots.

Do folks eat or avoid leeks?

BrassicaBabe · 05/01/2019 16:47

Thanks Rshard One of those lbs found me again. Hmm onwards though!

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/01/2019 16:55

Have had a high carb day today ( hey ho ! )
I’m back at work on Wednesday , that’ll make things much easier
Will weigh in on Monday and see how things are

KiteMarked · 05/01/2019 16:59

Hello, checking in on my first low carb boot camp. :)

Trying to drag the family along with me, making changes to increase our collective health for 2019.... wish me luck. They all became sugar-addled monsters during the month of December!

BIWI · 05/01/2019 17:07

Hah! Good luck @KiteMarked!

Check out the recipe threads (stickied at the top of the Bootcamp topic) as there should be some family-friendly recipes there that might help you.

@BIWI I just spotted on your "preparing for BC" you've listed out the veg. You have leeks at 2.9 per 100g. I'll take that! That'll teach me to listen to google Hmmpic as proof I wasn't imagining it

@BrassicaBabe - was that an American site? In the US they include fibre in their carb counts.

Having said that, over the years I have realised that carb counts vary widely (massively so in some instances), and I'm never entirely sure which to believe!

The carb counts I've used for the veg counter are taken from a low carb site I used to use when I first started low carbing. (Sadly it's defunct now, as the admin passed away Sad).

If I need to check anything now, my first port of call is Sainsbury's website, as they give nutritional information for most of the things they sell.

You'll be pleased to know that they give leeks as 2.8g carbs per 100g!

Phew! Because I was planning that leeky mix again next week until I read 14g!

potterbell · 06/01/2019 09:22

Hi - thanks to BIWI for all the info so far. Haven't officially signed up yet but watching all threads with interest! I've been steering low carb for some time but am calorie counting and would prefer to do one or the other!

I wanted to ask how long you think it takes to get into ketosis? Is that what the strict 2 weeks is to ensure? Also, what methods are people using to see if you are in ketosis or not?

Thanks in advance.

BIWI · 06/01/2019 09:24

You don't need to be in ketosis to lose weight, that's the first thing to say.

The strict two weeks is to switch the body from burning carbs for fuel to burning fat.

If you follow the rules properly, you'll lose weight and you won't need to check if you're in ketosis. But also, if you're drinking the amount of water that you should, then the ketostix (which many people use) won't show much anyway!

potterbell · 06/01/2019 10:58

Oh ok thank you Smile

potterbell · 06/01/2019 11:08

I have to say I'm anxious about breaking away from calorie counting but I'm also keen not to have to do it! I need to work on eating until satisfied.

BIWI · 06/01/2019 11:31

If it stops you feeling anxious, then by all means continue the calorie counting! But you need to know that all calories are not equal! A calorie of fat has a totally different impact on your body than an calorie of carbohydrate. The former won't trigger a release of insulin, whereas the latter will. And it's insulin that ultimately causes fat to be laid down in the body.

The other thing about low carbing is that you'll find very quickly that your appetite is suppressed. You won't be hungry between meals - indeed, you may even find yourself forgetting to eat because you're not hungry! Hunger (at least in the Western world) isn't triggered by an empty stomach, it's to do with the balance of three key hormones, insulin, grehlin and leptin. And too much insulin - triggered by eating a lot of carbohydrate - is what makes you hungry.

BIWI · 06/01/2019 11:32

(That's a very simplistic explanation but hopefully you get the gist!)

Heyyyyy BIWI, and everyone,

Happy 2019!

I’m a long time lurker and also have participated in one or two bootcamps under a couple of guises. I always find it so supportive and inspirational, and over the years I’ve recommended a fair few people to sign up as well. But I really find it hard to stay the distance in terms of actively participating...I’m not sure why...It’s probably linked to my horrendous perfectionism (most things are!) - as time goes on I feel a sort of entirely imagined weight of expectation from myself/others that becomes quite crushing and makes me want to withdraw, to hide away and just not engage with anything other than the things I have to do in my daily life. Very silly.

Last year I had only just started with one of the bootcamps when we had an unexpected bereavement in the family, and whilst we were trying to cope with that and get used to the new ‘normal’ my daughter then had a very serious flare up of her illness which meant she had to be in hospital for a spell. It was a tough year, all in all.

Anyway, all that to say I’d really like to come along for the ride this time! I need to make things better for myself in terms of psychological and emotional self care - it’s a never ending process, I find - to learn to be more comfortable with my emotions, to not feel the need to eat away my feelings, or spend them away. I’m planning to take up bullet journaling too, in a very relaxed, non-performance way, to just gently work my way toward a more positive and affirming inner dialogue. And at the same time, I want to focus on physical self care too.

Mindfulness is going to be my main goal this year. Mindful eating, drinking, spending, living.

Thanks, BIWI, as always, for the effort and time you put into this!

Good luck everyone!! Flowers

Drinking water today and planning alcohol free. Sad The LC is the easy bit Grin

Justmuddlingalong · 07/01/2019 13:48

I'm back on it as of this morning. Now realising how little water I've been drinking over the last few weeks. Trying to get things done in between peeing is keeping me out of the fridge.
