Low Carb Bootcamp - our final weigh-in!

BIWI · 19/03/2018 07:19

Good morning!

Well, we've finally reached the end. Here's the spreadsheet, for the last time

It feels to me like it's been a really good Bootcamp, with lots of NSVs as well as success on the scales. Hopefully today sees another good reading on the scales too!

As I've said on previous threads, just because we've reached the end of this Bootcamp, it doesn't mean that we all just melt away - I'll keep this chat thread going and when it fills up, I'll start another general chat one, so there's always someone here for help and support as well as ongoing low carb stuff.

I'll probably put the big stick back in its cupboard for a while though Grin

I'm due a remeasure too - last time I had dropped from a 36g to a 34g. I think this time my cup size has changed too.

Lonesurvivor this is the recipe for the Bounty bars

Rshard · 21/03/2018 21:46

Thanks guys. I’ll make myself an appointment I think. Have to go to the next city though which is a pain

AthelstaneTheUnready · 22/03/2018 07:15

Morning all!

I have a deal with myself that I don't need to 'exercise', i.e. try the C25K, if I have already done a few hours' hard physical work that day. I am absolute pooped with all the gardening, coal shifting, mowing, log cutting that I have done recently Blush. I'm sure it would be much less effort to just trot up the road for 20 mins Confused. Sigh. Long-time 'exercise' denier here though, so may take a while longer to sink in.

Am also having left-field cravings again (vide trifle discussion earlier) - this time it's for profiteroles. Not the nasty shop stuff, but true choux pastry with freshly whipped (non-sweetened!) cream and chocolate, not (bleurgh) fondant.

Since my abiding memory of these is of being about 4, sitting by the roadside in France, eating my first profiterole and being mindblown by it, I'm assuming it's not profiteroles as food I want, but a childish need for comfort and security. And THAT is because my employment status is uncertain at present, and causing me great (adult) anxiety about savings and the future. See, nothing to do with profiteroles at all really, and having actually thought it through before going shopping, I decided I didn't want them and so I didn't try and buy any Grin Grin Grin

Rshard · 22/03/2018 08:04

All that is very active athle and well done on dodging the profiteroles!

BIWI · 22/03/2018 11:51

Sorry - massively busy at work right now, but came across this infographic about magnesium which I though might be interesting

OP posts:
TimeIhadaNameChange · 22/03/2018 15:33

Thanks for that, BIWI. Actually bought a magnesium supplement last weekend. Haven't noticed any difference yet, but I'll keep on and see what happens.

ilovecherries · 22/03/2018 17:49

My sister (4 years younger than me) has just been diagnosed with T2. We've been estranged for years for various very good reasons, (she is also estranged from my parents, we were told via a family friend), so there is nothing I can do to help, but it has made me doubly glad I've lost weight. Before I used to try and comfort myself with the fact there was no family history of T2, but I guess that has changed now. But it's made me very sad. I haven't seen her for years, and thought I'd reconciled myself to the fact I may never have contact with her again, but all I can think of today was how much I doted on her when we were kids.

YoLoHogwomanay · 22/03/2018 18:39

ilove sorry to hear about your sister, and everything about the situation.

BIWI I refer you to benefit #2 on the list for magnesium. I hereby issue a general warning about magnesium supplements and their hideous bum leaking effects. I learned this the hard way . Beware!! Let this take no other bootcamper by surprise. I thought I had Norovirus after a week of innocent supplementation.

Rshard · 22/03/2018 18:47

Interesting reading BIWI thanks

Sorry to hear about your sister ilove, sounds like difficult circumstances.

Lonesurvivor · 22/03/2018 18:59

I'll give another warning on magnesium. I started dh and myself on magnesium after reading a similar article. I took it no issue but it gave dh a stomach ulcer. He'd never had one before and when it first started playing up he was complaining it was worse after taking the magnesium. Of course I rolled my eyes and told him it wasn't possibleprobably instructed him to up his dose when he went to the gp he was told magnesium is actually well known for causing stomach ulcers!

YoLoHogwomanay · 22/03/2018 19:06

I think the best option is to eat naturally magnesium rich foods in moderation like everything else, and avoid the actual supplements. That said, I pop one of the pills if I'm a little bunged up and next day, sorted! But I don't take them daily any more!

Bluntness100 · 22/03/2018 19:13

I take magnesium. I can't remember why I started. Have done for a couple of years. Dunno if they help with anything really but based on comments above, I've never been constipated on this diet and I wonder now if that's why.

ilovecherries · 22/03/2018 19:16

I take magnesium for night cramps. I really suffer if I run out. It's never had a laxative effect on me though!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 22/03/2018 20:20

I take regular magnesium for restless legs at night, as well as an instant sedative. Never had bowel problems with it! Could it be some of us are generally more lacking/unable to metabalise it as well than others, so it takes more to get the more obvious nasty effects?

Sorry about your sister Cherries Flowers. It's hard having to revisit all those emotions.

My career of (running-avoidance induced) exercise has come to an end for a few days. It's been bloody Laurel & Hardy in this house today with the cats, 2 stray bluetits, one mouse and myself all coming together in the kitchen at the same, noisy, chaotic, scrambling time. Result: one knee the size of a balloon having tripped neatly over one cat trying to head the other one off from the birds. They're all right naturally bitter; wee birdies shooed out the window, mouse shot out the door, and cats promptly whining for dinner. I'm walking like Boris Karloff.

prettybird · 22/03/2018 20:48

I also don't seem to react to the magnesium tablets, which I take daily (along with a 50+ multivitamin). I have TMI alert Blush regular movements - not necessarily daily, but close enough Wink

I do still suffer from restless legs - but come to think of it, less often than I used to Grin

YoLoHogwomanay · 23/03/2018 00:26

maybe I'm not magnesium deficient and the supplements constituted an overdose?

They are widely known for their laxative effect.

Maybe those unaffected would otherwise be constipated and they don't realise.

Anyhow...

My food log:
a wodge of cheese and 4 breaded chicken goujons. yes I Know. I was out for breakfast and had to grab something. I took the cheese with me but it wasn't enough.
large coffee with cream
vegetable omelette with salad, small bit of coleslaw and 4 thin chips (I didn't eat more and could have, so not going to flagellate myself)
3 thin salami slices each wrapped around a teaspoon of egg mayo - made a good snack in the gap between lunch and late dinner
2 small chicken drumsticks with home made veg Korma (cauli, turnip, ground almonds. curry powder and Greek yoghurt, coconut oil) and buttered kale. was yummy. had too much veg though. note to self: portion size, woman!!
coffee with cream
2 squares 85% dark choc. had it earlier not after dinner. I was too full then.

drank better today. Also gave back a Haribo to DC who wanted me to have the last one. I repaid the cute generosity with rejection. Shock

also did 12000 steps. I'm going to log that too. my exercise ranges from 7000 in a lazy day at home to 12000 when I'm at work. no gym or time for proper exercise, just day to day activity.

Overall, I've eaten too much today.

YoLoHogwomanay · 23/03/2018 00:28

athel sounds like an eventful day at your house! Hope the knee isn't hurt too bad.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 23/03/2018 06:39

YoLo - great food log - I like the analysis of everything. Makes it harder to file away under 'it'll be fine...'.

Knee painful today; hopefully it will loosen up a bit over the next few hours. On plus side, physical injury seems to help with the alcohol cravings - knowing that a drink or two would inflame it even further was entirely enough to quash the desire last night.

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2018 06:49

Morning all.

Was on track here yesterday and had a good gym session. Will do the same again today.

Get my new car tomorrow, eek. But will need to resist celebrating with wine, because my daughter is home Sunday for nine days, I'm super excited, not seen her since after Xmas as she's final year and snowed under, and i would rather not be greeting her feeling knackered because I had a night of wine related disrupted sleep.

Just realised I've not seen her since I started this woe again and have lost a couple of stone I think, so her reaction will be interesting.

Rshard · 23/03/2018 07:54

Crikey athle, Hope that knee does ease up a bit.

It’s easy to clock up the stamps around the be house isn’t it yolo. I’ve done 1500 already doing house stuff.

Enjoy the new car bluntness and have fun with your dd.

I went off piste last night, wasn’t a fuck it moment, out with dh and I really fancied a particular thing so I had it. Didn’t eat it all, dh kindly helped. This morning my stomach is in gastric turmoil, not painful or bloated but rumbling really noisily. Back on it today.

YoLoHogwomanay · 23/03/2018 07:59

Athel I'm going for accountability, to myself more than anything. it all sounds like a load of excuses from me so I need to not put any chips into my mouth rather than justifying why I didn't eat more.

sounds like you need to ice the knee and use ibuprofen gel to bring the swelling down. at least you've got an interesting story if you have to explain what happened! that's not really a comfort is it!

well done bluntness . you must be so excited!

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2018 08:29

Thanks rshard and yolo.

I actually am. Stupidly excited about seeing my daughter, we face time, text etc all the time, but this is the longest ever I've not physically seen her.

Of course give it a couple of hours and she'll have pissed me off 🤣

AthelstaneTheUnready · 23/03/2018 08:51

Hooray for Sunday, Blunt! Let us know what she says about your loss, as well.

Some NSVs from this past week - despite retaining my 2lbs re-gain, I have nonetheless lost another 1/2" off waist and bust. And despite weight going up slightly, I can now fit into another pair of trousers, giving me a whopping 4 pairs to choose from! Grin

My clothes are also beginning to hang a bit more gracefully again, rather than my looking like a marshmallow wrapped in clingfilm. Looking in the mirror this morning, I thought for the first time in ages I wasn't trying to disguise my weight as much as possible before leaving the house.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 23/03/2018 08:56

Poor you Athel, hope your knee improves soon.

Bluntness let us know what your daughter says!

Flowers for Ilove

I deliberately went off piste yesterday too, but not in the way I expected. Went out for a work lunch - had steak and spinach. Perused the pudding menu but decided that nothing on there tickled my fancy and was worth the carbs. In the afternoon, I decided that a chocolate with sprinkles Krispy Kreme WAS worth the carbs. It was bloody lovely, I really savoured and enjoyed it with my afternoon coffee.

But that was the extent of my splurge. I had bolognaise with cauli rice for dinner and I am currently frying up mushrooms with bacon and spinach for my breakfast.

On the running front, I know there has been a lot of enthusiasm for C25k, but have you (or anyone else) considered a version of running known as "Jeffing"?

Essentially, it is interval running (alternating between a brisk walking pace and a running pace) which you repeat for the entirety of your run. E.g. 30 or 60 sec run, 30 sec walk and repeat.

It was devised by a US Olympian chap called Jeff Galloway and I was introduced to it by a friend - there is a Facebook Group called Girls That Jeff (or Girls Who Jeff) and there is lots of advice and encouragement. It's given my running a new lease of life as I was always getting injured.

People regularly do 5k/10k/half and full marathons using this technique. And if you need any further convincing, there was a winner of an ultra marathon recently who Jeffed the entire thing.
