Low Carb Bootcamp - our final weigh-in!

BIWI · 19/03/2018 07:19

Good morning!

Well, we've finally reached the end. Here's the spreadsheet, for the last time

It feels to me like it's been a really good Bootcamp, with lots of NSVs as well as success on the scales. Hopefully today sees another good reading on the scales too!

As I've said on previous threads, just because we've reached the end of this Bootcamp, it doesn't mean that we all just melt away - I'll keep this chat thread going and when it fills up, I'll start another general chat one, so there's always someone here for help and support as well as ongoing low carb stuff.

I'll probably put the big stick back in its cupboard for a while though Grin

cherries I feel really angry on your behalf. These wankers would never DREAM of shouting stuff out to men. It is misogyny of the highest order and reveals them to be utter twats. When you're in the shower afterwards, can you think of them and scream your head off and expel the bad vibes, literally washing their vile comments from you?

I have been googling and found some low carb beer on sale - on offer, in fact - at Tesco. Has anyone tried it? www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/297686574?sc_cmp=ppcGHS+-+Grocery+-+AlcoholPX+%7C+Shopping+GSC+%7C+Alcohol+%2B+Tesco+BrandPRODUCT+GROUP297686574&gclid=CjwKCAjwlIvXBRBjEiwATWAQIlfGAQeBhSHwGVQmVYTDldhMsUcYlL0L8bN-fNW226op9aCDW49p9RoCHEIQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CK6UjfD12toCFYsw0wodYckLNA

LeapinLizards · 27/04/2018 18:25

I forgot to say that the beer is 2.9g carb per can.

Eolian · 27/04/2018 19:01

cherries - what wankers Angry. How dare they?!

Rshard · 27/04/2018 19:26

What absolute twats ilove

TimeIhadaNameChange · 27/04/2018 20:11

@BIWI - I have decided you deserve a telling off! If it weren’t for you I wouldn’t have lost weight last year, and without that loss would nevertheless have started C25K, which wouldn’t have resulted in me running 10.5 miles today, which has left me chomping at the bit for PayDay so I can sign up for the Glasgow half marathon, despite currently sitting here in pain. Oh, and I’ll be sorely disappointed if I don’t get a place in the London Marathon next year. So consider yourself well and truly told off for bringing about this sequence of events!!!!!

Will definitely sign up for the next BC as I need to get back on the wagon. Athel - give me a shout if you need help, I love a good a good spreadsheet, me!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/04/2018 20:14

More than happy to share duties, Time Grin. I expect you, like me, are itching to get your fingers all over a new excel... the glowing promise of an empty set of cells...

TimeIhadaNameChange · 27/04/2018 20:27

Indeed! I’m glad it’s not just me who has the love!

It’s a shame we don’t live closer, I have a feeling we could be great friends in RL!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/04/2018 20:49

You're forgetting my utter uninterest in running, I think Grin

Shameful confession - I still haven't tried it. I got as far as digging out some old hiking shoes that would pass for trainers, then realised I had no running clothes at all. I have jeans, cords, and woolly jumpers. What do you wear to run in, anyway - actual tracksuits?

ilovecherries · 27/04/2018 20:55

Athel. Lycra Grin.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/04/2018 21:04

Seriously? Like the cyclists? I am not buying lycra; my self-image is poor enough as it is. Perhaps I could single-handedly revive the Rocky look? A nice flannel tracksuit? I'm going to google...

TimeIhadaNameChange · 27/04/2018 21:05

I hadn't forgotten, Athel, I just think it’s irrelevant, especially as I know fine we’ll you'll be hooked just as soon as you get started!

When I started I wore baggy joggers, t-shirt and an old jumper. Basically what I wear lounging around the house, and get embarrassed being seen in. But I had nothing else and usually had the gym to myself, so it was ok. I soon bought Lycra pants, sports bra (a must have, I recommend not buying one that doesn’t undo as getting out of it afterwards can use more energy that the run itself!) and a running t-shirt, all dead cheap from Amazon. I then got a reduced running jacket from Marks. Already had running shoes (that I’d run in once, I think! - again, they were cheap, probably from amazon, bought a few years ago). My only real expense was a decent wateproof jacket. Living on Skye I decided it was a must!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 27/04/2018 21:10

Athel - trust me, I had no plans for buying Lycra when I started.

The first day I wore it, the fire alarm went off just as I was ending my run. All was fine, until I went back in and realised I had dropped my locker key (NOT TO BE REMOVED FROM THE GYM) outside. Ran out to look for it but forgot my gym key, and was then locked out. Hid for ages expecting the cleaner to turn up but they didn’t, so I ended up having to go back to my office (same site) in all my Lycra glory and ring for help, as all my clothes were in the locker in the gym! I was horrified at the thought that people might see me!!!!!

These days I don’t give a damn who sees me. Possibly helped by the “nice arse” comments I got a few weeks ago!!!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/04/2018 21:18

Oooh, sports bra, hadn't thought of that.

Your lycra mishap stories are not encouraging! At least you were at the same site, and didn't have to go too far.

Tell me again how great your legs are, all you runners - it's my great wobbly (now cellulite-less!) thighs that bother me the most. That and my matchstick shins. I'd love to have a pair of slender legs that didn't look like chicken drumsticks.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 27/04/2018 21:39

My calves now have muscles, it really is amazing!

My thighs still seem flabby to me, but that's mainly because I really only see them when I’m sat on the loo, and they just spread out everywhere! But even I have noticed that they look muscular when I’m standing up. There’s definitely less off them now.

It’s my arse which other people comment on, but I can’t see that so don’t really know!

The surprise has been my stomach. The running has definitely slimmed my torso, which I really wasn’t expecting. In fact, when I was bra shopping last weekend I spent many happy minutes admiring my naked top half in the mirror in the changing room, whilst waiting for the poor assistant to try and find me a bra that fitted. I never usually find my reflection that pleasing! I guess it makes a change from groping myself!!!

Bluntness100 · 27/04/2018 22:18

I second running also. I don't run outside due to the bloke comments, and I don't run for long, but I do run for ten mins most days on the treadmill before I do the rest of my workout. After weights it's prob the thing I like the most. Time is correct on the torso thing because your body twists from side to side when you run if you think about it.

However it's hard on uour joints, it's high impact, so make sure you get good trainers, a good sports bra is a must, and build up slowly, otherwise you'll do yourself a damage.

On thr sports bra, I've lost count of the amount of women I've seen jogging when I'm driving by and they clearly aren't wearing a sports bra and all I can think is "ouch, that's gotta hurt". It also looks fairly ridiculous. 😳

AthelstaneTheUnready · 28/04/2018 06:03

Right, I can do this. It so happens I have sweet, beautiful, precious nothing to do today (rare as hen's teeth!), so I'm going into town to look for a sports bra (erm, where might sell these?), and some sort of jogging bottoms/sports trousers. I must surely have some suitable t-shirts/walking tops in the cupboard for the rest.

I may look a little bag-lady'ish to start, but I gather people are likely to shout out of cars regardless, so I may as well just crack on anyway.

I remember the last time I tried running (about 22 years ago), I got about 5 or 6 houses down the road and was clawing for breath, so this might take some time...

AthelstaneTheUnready · 28/04/2018 06:10

Scrap that question! I've just googled, and - durr - all the camping shops around here also do some very painful looking bondage sports wear*, so - even better - will head out to Keswick where the shops are competing on price, and can then get a quick walk in as well.

  • note: probably just normal sports bras, but look like nothing I've ever wriggled into before. Given I can get confused emerging from a dress with only two armholes, these may need some practice.
Rayna37 · 28/04/2018 06:42

I use a Shock Absorber Run bra, fasten the top clips and go in head first, then fasten the bottom like a normal bra. It is a skill.

I very rarely get comments shouted when out running. Much as this slightly defeats the point of it being so convenient if it involves a drive, if you run in a park or along a canal bank etc, anywhere away from traffic, much less likely. If you think it might bother you.

BIWI · 28/04/2018 07:24

Grin @TimeIHadANameChange. Sorry. Not Sorry

@AthelstaneTheUnready - Sports Direct is your friend! I hate going there - scuzzy place and often scuzzy people too (well, definitely in the one near me), but you'll find good prices on basic running stuff. You definitely need proper trainers, and start gently. C25K is really worth doing.

I'm getting back into running too as I know it really does make a difference - I'm 'gym fit' but my cardio fitness isn't great. And I know that when I started running first time around, it really did help not just with cardio fitness but with all over muscle tone. I was really surprised to find that my abs were stiff/sore after running! I really genuinely thought that running would just exercise my legs, and not my whole body

As I start thinking about the next Bootcamp, I wonder if any of you have any suggestions for doing things differently/better? Is there anything that we could do that would make it easier, or anything that you've been frustrated by?

If you have any suggestions, just let me know.

I'll be posting a general 'preparing for Bootcamp' thread towards the end of next week

Eolian · 28/04/2018 07:29

I wear black lycra running tights (not too unflattering if ypu wear a longish top). Shock Absorber sports bras are great and proper trainers essential! I've never been yelled at by arsehole blokes while running - I guess I've been lucky!

BrassicaBabe · 28/04/2018 07:37

BC and running! My two current "passions"! And by passions I mean "things that I bang on about"! I'm another one for BC giving me the confidence to do running and other Lycra things. I'm now the thinnest and fittest I've ever been. Although my max distance has been nearly 6k to times 17k!!!

So we've ground you down athel! GrinGrin

I'm another fan of the shock absorber bras. Although it does take something akin to yoga moves to get in and out of!! And Sweaty Betty leggings in the sale to feel good in

LeapinLizards · 28/04/2018 07:54

I am just getting back into running after a lot of injuries. Athel, check out jeffing - someone on here suggested it - and it's a great way to avoid that feeling you describe of getting 6 houses down and feeling like you'll pass out. I listen to music while jeffing - I run for a song then walk for a song. Also, if you can run off-road it will be much kinder on your body.

I can't remember ever being shouted at whilst running, even in the city, which is where most of my running has taken place over the years. So it's not inevitable it'll happen. I now go in fields so the worst that happens is being baa-ed at by an indignant sheep.

BIWI would a section on the spreadsheet with science stuff and how LC works in terms of what's going on in your body be an idea? A Q&A type thing in which questions we've asked are compiled in one place. I'm sure the same things crop up again and again.

LeapinLizards · 28/04/2018 07:56

Do the runners here think shock absorbers are the best running bras? I need to get a new one so would be interested to hear your recommendations.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 28/04/2018 08:02

Athel - just do make sure you go for front opening. Here's my first experience copied from an earlier BC thread and edited:

This morning's trip to the gym was far less eventful than yesterday's. It was the bit after that didn't go as well as planned. First, had a real struggle getting out of my sports bra (only bought it as it was cheap, cheap because it‘s an all-in-one thingy - rookie mistake!). I just didn’t have the strength in my arms to stretch it enough to lift it over my head! It got to the point where I was wondering which of my colleagues I could call upon to help, the only problem being that the only person nearby was a 60 something retired headmaster (male, obviously)! I could have rung DP, but I didn’t think he’d appreciate the call, especially if he’d had to tell his colleagues (as our relationship is “complicated” and he wouldn’t have appreciated them knowing that seeing me naked isn't something unusual). I managed it eventually, basically by hanging upside down and dislocating my shoulder. Fun!!!!

Brassica - thing is, I can keep on going, I just can’t do speed. I doubt my speed over 100m would be much faster than what I did yesterday. Saying that I do walk quickly, and can keep going for hours, but speed doesn’t come into the equation when it comes to running. I’m in awe of your 5K times!
