Congratulations Creme another Bootcamp baby! I ate low carb through my last pregnancy and through two lots of breastfeeding. I have done a fair bit of reading up on the matter but I must stress that I am not a health professional so please take the following as friendly advice and not necessarily medically accurate...
First there is no absolute requirement for any carbohydrate at all while pregnant and breastfeeding. I do know a handful of women who eat zero carb (all meat) diets and have had no issues throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. There are also many more examples of women with hyperemesis gravidarum who are unable to keep any food down (and therefore aren't consuming any carbs) yet go on to have perfectly healthy babies. However, I recommend following the precautionary principle and aiming for about 50g of carbs per day during pregnancy. Some people may want to go higher or lower than this but that is a matter for personal preference. I am a firm believer in following your instincts so go by what your body is telling you. Many women suffer from nausea and/or food aversions during the first trimester so you may find you have to eat more carbs at first. Again be guided by how you feel.
I think it is essential to take pregnancy supplements when eating low carb as your baby gets first dibs on vitamins and minerals and you only get what's left over!
suggest pg women eat every 2-3 hours even if it's just something small
I see no reason to do this. It might help if you're suffering from morning sickness but this advice doesn't seem specific to low carb. Was any explanation given?
I put a significant amount on during the 8 weeks! I find I'm STARVING constantly.
I put on a lot of weight in my low carb pregnancy, about 30 lb, and a lot of it went on in the first trimester. However I wasn't able to stay very low carb in the first trimester due to nausea so I think that contributed to my rapid weight gain. I lost about half the baby weight within the first couple of months after DS4 was born then the rest came off more slowly. It wasn't any problem to get back down to my pre-pregnancy weight of 58 kg.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Please do ask if you have any questions, either on the thread or you can PM me if you like.
