Week 2 - Low Carb Bootcamp - my favourite week!

I love this week, because this is when all the naysayers and doubters realise that this WOE really works!

(... and those who've cheated realise that that really doesn't work Wink)

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to record your first loss

I missed most of this weekend as I have my very lovely SIL staying with us, prior to her leaving for a 6 month stint in Australia. So I haven't been able to be as glued to the laptop as I am usually.

Glad to hear that some of you have reported in good losses already - I'll look forward to hearing the rest today!

Good luck everyone, for this second week. Hopefully after a good first week you'll know it's worth it Flowers

cucumber is a good idea thanks holger

I've lost almost 6lb so far so very pleased. Can't quite trust myself that it will carry on being so successful! Not drinking alcohol is good too. I am a bit worried after Sober October I will slip back to my wine drinking ways.

ClearEyesFullHearts · 18/10/2017 09:31

How can you expect your body and palate to adjust to this way of eating if you are not following this way of eating? Confused

There's a reason the first two weeks of Bootcamp are stricter than the ensuing six (or eight, or whatever).

Do it according to the method outlined by BIWI and give yourselves a chance to change, and succeed.

CarbyDiem · 18/10/2017 09:31

I have 6 chicken thighs. What shall i do with them?

Usually I'd just fry them but fancying something different

ClearEyesFullHearts · 18/10/2017 09:34

Must be the 43 tonnes of spinach.

Once Blimey you have a lot going on! I completely understand that it's the logistics that makes it even more difficult, and I also understand why you chose to have a little bit of rice.

When I say that carbs make me unwell, I don't mean directly like I eat rice and then feel like shit. I mean overall. I have blood sugar issues and carbs aren't good for my overall health. I also notice that when my diet is carb heavy my brain gets clogged up (probably quite literally, with excess glucose) and I can feel it becoming sluggish, I hate that. I also mean that it's a bit of a whole picture situation - when I eat carbs I am more likely to crave sugary foods, so my intake of sweets, chocolate and such goes up. I am more likely to feel tired, so my coffee intake goes up and then I don't sleep well, and also i snack more for energy throughout the day. I am more likely to feel moody, so I need treats to make myself feel better. I am more likely to hate myself, so then I eat to comfort myself.

If any of that applies, can you maybe use the overall picture as motivation to stay on the straight and narrow?

I admire your determination to stick with it!

Morning all

Haven't RTFT but last couple of pages. Adios so sorry to hear about your pet. I hope you and anyone else struggling have a better day today.

Checking in for my day 3 (started late). Am pleased to report I'm feeling less hungry and enjoying the food so far. Had a great dinner last night - salmon wrapped with sage leaves and prosciutto, fried in olive oil, served with salad. Yum. Also managed to watch Bake Off last night without eating cake, that's a first!

Loving the food inspiration on here, please keep posting what you're eating.

ClearEyesFullHearts · 18/10/2017 09:47

I was with a friend for a curry, one of whom has serious problems at the moment and is much more overweight than me so I didn't want to make big deal about not sharing a rice, it wouldn't have helped her.

So you put her feelings, needs, and health before your own. Hmm

Oncewaswho · 18/10/2017 09:55

Holger - yes, while I don't think my lapses into bread and rice are psychological, I do get the eating as a reward or pick-me-up thing, that is definitely a bad habit that I have to fight against, crisps are my worst enemy in that situation. I know that one lapse makes me much more likely to fall off the bandwagon for a whole week or so too, that must be all in the mind as I really don't think I get carb cravings / blood sugar surges as such, just that little voice saying well, you've eaten bread you might as well have some crisps as well.

Anyway I have had spinach/mushroom/cheese omelette for breakfast and have made a big tuna mayo said for lunch. Dinner will be chicken and veg in some guise or another.

A while ago someone mentioned a non Hellmans brand of mayo that was low carb, can anyone remember what it was? I have eaten a lot of Hellmans this week but really don't like it, it has an odd, bland, plasticy taste (I prefer the French styles with mustard in them).

ClearEyesFullHearts · 18/10/2017 09:59

Delouis mayonnaise, once.

Found in Waitrose, better price via Amazon pantry, I think.

Oncewaswho · 18/10/2017 10:01

Cleareyes - yes, I did.

Oncewaswho · 18/10/2017 10:01

Thanks about the mayo BTW.

ClearEyesFullHearts · 18/10/2017 10:03

Wow, maybe not. Ocado showing £2.55 for 250g, Amazon pantry is £4.99 for the same. Shock

HolgerDanske · 18/10/2017 10:21

NSV!!

Just put on a skirt that I bought recently for work. I had tried it on just before starting bootcamp proper, and at the time it did not zip up.

It zips up comfortably! I can wear it to work today. Smile

I haven't lost any weight since I started boot camp proper, since I had already had my initial whoosh a couple of weeks previously, so this is a good demonstration of the fact that you will lose inches even if the scales aren't showing it.

KOKO.

juneavrile · 18/10/2017 10:25

Checking in.
L: Tuna mayo salad
D: Halloumi and roast courgettes, asparagus, cauliflower in cumin and pickles.

Carby Are your chicken thighs bone in or out?

Rshard · 18/10/2017 10:29

I bought the Delouis mayo once, it’s lovely. Little jar though so I’m keeping to myself!

Congratulations holger on the NSV!

prettybird · 18/10/2017 10:30

Carbydiem - try sticky lemon roast chicken. Thighs into oven proof and preferably hob proof dish (put not totally necessary as you won't be doing the last bit which was de-glazing with a glass of wine Wink): I use a Le Creuset frying pan.

Chicken thighs (I presume they do have skin on!) into dish/frying pan. Tuck about 8 unpeeledgarlic cloves around them (I half smash them with the side of a knife). Half a lemon, squeeze it over it and then tuck the lemon halves in amongst the chicken thighs. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Drizzle olive oil over all of it and roast at 200C for 40 minutes. If you gave Basel leaves, you can sprinkle some torn ones over it after 20 minutes.

At the end you are supposed to take everything out and de-glaze the pan with a glass of white wine, but I often don't bother.

Veryflummoxed · 18/10/2017 10:36

Adios Flowersyou can come back to this way of eating, just one day at a time

Starsky what Clear and Cherries said. You can do it.

SayrraT Flowers I know the feeling.

prettybird · 18/10/2017 10:39

I agree with cleareyes - it is just 2 weeks. What is that in the grand scheme of things? You've had a life time of eating one way, learning a new way is not going to happen overnight.

Even though I've been HFLC for a while, I've been enjoying the extra discipline that full Boot Camp offers. I'd crept back into snacking on nuts and squares of dark chocolate - but I'm resisting while I'm on Boot Camp. And guess what - the urge to snack is diminishing! Grin

Oncewas - I know you've said you're not keen on butter and the "greasiness". Have you tried some of the cheaper, fattier cuts of meat? Lamb breast, pork belly? Or have streaky bacon rather than back bacon? You could make a Lancashire hotpot but using celeriac rather than potato. Cauliflower roasted in olive oil or microwaved with some butter doesn't need to be greasy. The recipe thread has a lovely recipe for roasted broccoli with garlic, olive oil and then finished off with lots of grated Parmesan. (It's also great for snacking on if big if there is any left over).

starsky22 · 18/10/2017 10:48

clear eyes ilove BIWI Thank you all! This is just what I needed to hear, I do not need to eat cake and will not be having any. Have brought my low carb lunch in, so also don't need to touch the sandwiches and crisps. The scales were down this morning and I am getting close to my target weight and I do not want to self-sabotage!

CarbyDiem · 18/10/2017 10:52

Lemon chicken sounds nice.
Skin on bone in. But I'll cut the bone out as i dont like it cooked in.

Gammeldragz · 18/10/2017 11:02

Re greasiness. That may need building up to, I used to hate fat on chops etc but now I eat everyone else's as well! Love things slathered in butter...
Cheating in bootcamp - I honestly believe if you cheat big time you should start the 2 weeks again. Harsh but a good deterrent!
ilovecherries well done on the 12s. I am 1lb off the 11s... So close!

Just had an early brunch of chorizo, halloumi, and kale stir fried in oil and butter.

#buttercrisis £1.35 a pack in Lidl now Shock got a friend to check Aldi and now £1.33 there. Was 85p a few months ago!

Veryflummoxed · 18/10/2017 11:07

Once bread was the hardest thing for me to give up and if I have gone off piste it’s more often than not to have bread, however it’s guaranteed to send me straight into a carb eating downward spiral if I do.* Knowing this helps me to resist. Also I am now finding (after sixteen months of mainly low carbing) that bread is not only easier to resist but becoming less appealing. Once we are on bootcamp light there are some low carb bread recipes using flax and almond flour. I loved this, I think it’s probably more likely to appeal if you’re into heavy wholemeal type loafs.*

prettybird · 18/10/2017 11:11

Carbydiem - I've never made it without the bone. I'd adjust the timing if you're going to take the bone out.

Veryflummoxed · 18/10/2017 11:12

Cherries🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

prettybird · 18/10/2017 11:18

I make sourdough bread (no added yeast) regularly for dh and ds (my starter is now 2 years old) so when that is hot out the oven, it is hard to resist, especially when it is warm out of the oven. I leave the kitchen to avoid the temptation - helped by the fact that you shouldn't cut into fresh bread for an hour anyway and once it is cool, I'm ok to leave it to them to have. I know what it tastes like - I don't need to have any. Once I've reached my target (I've calculated: 7 months at 5lb a month Shock if I want to do it by our 20th wedding anniversary), I'll maybe have the odd slice if I really want it - slathered with Lurpak of course Wink
