Week 3 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - we move on to Bootcamp Light!

Morning all

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness once more

I hope that the scales reflect the efforts you've made over the last, strict apart from the cheating fortnight.

Now you have a choice. You can either move on to Bootcamp Light, which allows a bit of fruit (berries mainly), for you to include nuts/seeds - again, occasionally, and also a moderate amount of alcohol. Rules for Bootcamp Light are on the spreadsheet, but to make it even easier for you here they are:

1. Eat when you’re hungry - if you’re not hungry, don’t eat

In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you’re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don’t force yourself to eat. But don’t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food

Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs.

You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don’t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat

Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.
Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it – this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more – compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy

"You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn’t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you’ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this – but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day

Even if you’re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product – so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you’re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol

But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you’re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit

"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please – only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information – these are the carb counts:
Rhubarb – 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don’t forget you will need to sweeten this – and not with sugar!)
Blackberries – 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries – 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries – 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds

Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts – BUT – check the back of your packets as I don’t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Brazils 3.1g carbs per 100g
Walnuts 3.3g carbs per 100g
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Hazelnuts 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners

The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us – and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable – occasionally – to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

I made my flaxseed bread with macadamia nuts, mainly because I forgot to buy ground almonds and the ordinary almonds I had were too difficult to grind.
I can recommend adding a handful of macadmia nuts to the flaxseed. They were easy to crush (pestle & mortar) and made the loaf taste really nice.

imustbepatient · 07/06/2017 13:48

This is the sort of mozzarella you can grate for fathead pizza etc. It isn't a rectangular block, a bit firmer and drier than the ball stuff.

imustbepatient · 07/06/2017 13:49

It is a rectangular block, not isn't! Grrr.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 07/06/2017 13:51

Yes, Chester, that's the downside for me - the slices are so small!

Yorkshirebornandbred · 07/06/2017 14:03

I'm not weighing myself until Monday (I get obsessed with the scales) but I just measured myself and in two days I've lost an inch off my thighs and half an inch off my flabby stomach Grin

wombattoo · 07/06/2017 14:06

Hello everyone.
Some really great nsv's going on.

AllRoads - I think this way of eating would be very hard for a vegan, mainly as butter is used liberally. I don't know if there is an unprocessed vegan alternative. A quick Google search has shown there is a website called onegreenplanet which has a low carb vegan menu. It might be worth you having a look. Good luck.

style in relation to cake, I have no difficulty telling people that I avoid carbs and sugar, but if you don't want to - you could just say that you're cutting out sugar. I certainly wouldn't feel obliged to eat the cake.

wombattoo · 07/06/2017 14:08

Yorkshire that's great. Maybe it's the increase in the water you are drinking Wink

AdalindSchade · 07/06/2017 14:13

I don't know what you would eat as a vegan. Vegetables, salad, avocado, olives, seeds and tofu. Olive oil and coconut oil. Pretty limited.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 07/06/2017 14:13

Is anyone else groping themselves trying to work out if their fat has gone squishy?! Grin

cabbage67 · 07/06/2017 14:14

Am I the only person who doesn't like flax bread ? It smells like wet dog when it's toasted. I'm very disappointed as I was so looking forward to it.

Will try the coconut bread instead.

HemanOrSheRa · 07/06/2017 14:15

ilove I asked about double cream in Spanish. My friend said it's Crema Doble (like Michael Buble with a D!) or Nata Doble. Nata is another word for cream, apparently. Although she did say you may have a job getting double cream as we know it. Nata doble might get you 2 creams Smile. I guess if you wave your arms around enough it'll be OK Grin.

BIWI · 07/06/2017 14:40

The thing that worries me, if you're not prepared to say/defend what you're doing, it becomes all too easy to slip and give in, and have that cake.

It becomes self-sabotage. Trust me - the voice of bitter experience Grin

But why shouldn't your needs and your interests be important? That's the real worry. Plenty of people these days know that sugar is an issue - the world is gradually coming round to low carbing! So if you can't talk about carbs you can talk about sugar and people should understand.

And if they don't, then frankly they're probably trying to sabotage you themselves.

And - at last! - a fast food chain that's offering low carb salads - and it's Subway, amazingly enough

I haven't tried any of these but they look worth a try

I had some proper bread today, well a Lidl high protein roll - I enjoyed it at the time but did feel really full after. It's nice for an occasional treat (my second since Jan).

Yesterday two seperate people commented on my weightloss. It is nice that people notice but I also find it really intrusive and almost makes me want to self sabotage. I just hate knowing that people have paid that much attention to know how I look - crazy I know!

I will however KOKO.

AdalindSchade · 07/06/2017 15:00

Another good weigh in, back to pre carby twat weight. But having a sad, stressed and bingey day. Working at home is bad for me. I have had 2 bowls of yoghurt with cream, 3 pieces of dark chocolate and 5 peanut m and ms. Also had mushrooms and cheese for breakfast and salad for lunch so could have been worse but I'm having a difficult day. Got to koko

JiminnyCricket · 07/06/2017 16:11

I'm not getting on with any of the low carb bread recipes. Didn't mind the flax one, but didn't finish a loaf and it went off really quick. Didn't fancy freezing it as my freezer is jammed full of the dog's food (raw fed Blush). I figured I only wanted the bread replacement mainly for a cheese/ pate/ butter vessel anyway, so tonight I'm making flax crackers in the dehydrator. Bit of an experiement as usual, but I reckon if I do half water to ground flaxseed and add in some dried herbs/ spice of some kind, I'll basically end up with crispy, cracker-like jobbies that I can have with goats cheese and sundried tomatoes Grin

I need something I can snack on during the election results tomorrow night when I'm struggling to stay awake from about 4am onwards Blush

ilovecherries · 07/06/2017 16:17

Thanks heman. I suspect I will be eating nothing but Tapas for 36 hours.

ShastaBeast · 07/06/2017 16:22

ASD - I get that too, it's meant to be a complement but makes you so self conscious and worry they noticed how flabby you were beforehand. I'd quite like to be invisible really.

I bought some milled flaxseed but it left a bad aftertaste so I'm not sure I'd like the bread.

I had a good gym session, new harder work out routine, after an unplanned latte breakfast with a friend. Should've had an Americano with milk but I've not had a coffee out while low carb so went with my usual habit. Had creamy coffee and pork crackling about 12 so am missing a meal. I will raid the fridge as I'm home alone once kids are in bed. Had pork belly the other day but didn't cook it long enough, it's usually so much yummier. Annoyingly my heartburn is worse and I have a sore throat - there's no mfp entry for tyrozets but presume they have sugar. Feeling poorly made the cravings for sugar and carb return, comfort food, not helped by the treats in the office.

JiminnyCricket · 07/06/2017 16:37

ASD for me it depends who says it Grin

If it's a relative stranger I don't mind, but weirdly when my Mum or Dad say I've lost weight I feel positively murderous. Go figure!

AdalindSchade · 07/06/2017 16:44

How long would exploded babybel be edible for after making?

Craftypuss · 07/06/2017 16:45

@secretsignal - that's a relief! Grin

glenthebattleostrich · 07/06/2017 16:53

BIWI, subway have down the salads for a while. They aren't great value but really handy when you are out and about and the only other option is Gregg's!

Yesterday was a bit of a write off, PMT hit and I are all of the (lowish) carb food in the world. So apologies anyone wanting pork scratchings I had every last one!!! On the plus side, I stuck to an 8 hour eating window, it was all BC lite friendly and only 1 day instead of the 4 it's been previous month's.

Today has been better, creamy tea with coconut oil for breakfast, parma ham stuffed with cheese and a salad for lunch and dinner will be buffalo steaks in garlic and ginger with mushrooms and kojak noodles. Lots of water and quite a few teas but I didn't want the biscuits or toast at softplay today :)

Right, off to catch up properly as I hid from you all yesterday!

JiminnyCricket · 07/06/2017 17:08

How does everyone deal with panic?

I keep thinking I only have 10 months to the wedding, I've left it too late, I'm not going to be where i want to be etc etc and it's getting right on my threpany bits. Angry

I'm a bit of a panicker anyway, but this negativity is really taking hold especially when I weigh in and I've seen the same numbers for a couple of weeks. It's like they are "wasted weeks" and I'm running out of time Hmm

I've seen a few people losing like 6 stone in 6 months on those meal replacement type diets and I keep thinking i need to do something extreme like that to hit my goal and then deal with the weight gaining issue after the wedding, maybe coming back to LCHF then. I KNOW in my brain this is insane, but there's something in me pushing my thoughts in darker moments in that general direction Confused

Why am I thinking like this?

boldlygoingsomewhere · 07/06/2017 17:09

Food all fine today.
B - ff yoghurt with cinnamon
L- flax bread, butter and salami
D- cauliflower cheese with herb chippolata sausage, homemade 'mocha' pudding ( yoghurt mixed with a bit of cocoa, spoon of coffee and flaked almonds to decorate)

ShastaBeast · 07/06/2017 17:14

Jiminny - Id be the opposite. My mum often comments but is always positive. My dad only points out if I'm fat, although the dynamics are different now I'm older with kids and living a few hours away. A positive comment would be a miracle. He can't talk anyway he's so unhealthy and much more overweight than I've ever been. But I do expect my parents to notice me while preferring to go under the radar in public.
