Starting today - low carb

Right it's time to get back in the low carb saddle. I basically follow boot camp rules. That works very well for me. I find getting into ketosis hard so making my public declaration of intent here. Planning to weigh and measure shortly.

So I'm starting today. Whingeing about carb flu all the way. Join me

Broccoli is so not good Grin. When I was a kid I found a maggot in some broccoli and haven't been able to stomach it since!
I quite like the sound of roasted, fried courgettes though.
Shame about the gin - I have bucket loads left over from Christmas!
Thanks for the info Mothership and Betsy

teaandkittens · 08/01/2017 22:46

Thanks betsy and wombat for the info and reassurance!

And I need that chocolate mousse concoction please Smile

lottieandmia · 09/01/2017 02:24

As far as I know you can have moderate amounts of alcohol once you're out of stage 1 (i.e. 20 net carbs a day) can't you? But it should be very dry wine, for example. And obviously not a whole bottle haha.

For me the problem with alcohol is that it makes me crave carbs.

BetsyM00 · 09/01/2017 08:04

Chocolate mousse concoction:

Melt 60-80g dark choc and 1 tbsp coconut oil
Leave to cool for a bit.
Whisk 300ml double cream til stiff
Gently mix in the cooled melted choc.
Spoon into small ramekins or ice cube trays and refrigerate.

Lidl Bellaron dark choc 74% = 25.6g carbs for 80g choc
Double cream = 4.8g carbs for 300ml
So 20 portions is only 1.5g carbs per portion.

This is so NOT for bootcamp! However, I do like to have these to hand to stave off carb cravings.

lasttimeround · 09/01/2017 08:12

Down half a pound but determined not to grumble. I did lapse on Friday and am now back in ketosis since. I need to go v v low carb to get into ketosis.

Some great tips esp the chocolate thing. Hope everyone's well. I'm looking forward to official boot camp but am glad I've started already otherwise I'd be eating my bodyweight in carbs "waiting for boot camp to start". If only I were one of those people who loses their appetite when stressed or busy. ..

Been at it since Tuesday... scales say 3lb down. tea I can only dream of 9lb Shock

ChesterDrawers · 09/01/2017 11:15

Weighed myself for the first time today, not happy with the results. Scales have now been hidden by DH til the end of the month (I turn into a manic obsessed number freak if I weigh too often).

Today's plan...
B: Yogurt, double cream
L: HM broccoli and stilton soup, flax bread and butter
D: chicken thighs slow cooked with tin of toms, courgette, leek, shallots, mushrooms, garlic, cauli rice

Bit dairy heavy, but hopefully not too bad. Feeling a lot better in myself after three days of LC and two of no wine. Need to POAS at some point to see if I am in ketosis, but forgot this morning. Will do so later.

MrsKoala · 09/01/2017 11:43

Hi all, can I join you. I am starting boot camp today. I have done it twice before after each baby and now baby 3 is 11wks old I want to start again.

I am 14st 2. Target 12st. (I was 11st 10 before the baby so that would be great).

Had 2 fried eggs and a rasher of bacon for breakfast, but am ravenous now and the dc are driving me mad. They've been up since 4am and I am bfing. Might have some yogurt and nuts.

lottieandmia · 09/01/2017 11:55

I'm not going to weigh myself. My clothes are looser so it must be working. I've been using parmesan cheese to cook with - it has 0 carbs so better than cheddar.

Aderyn2016 · 09/01/2017 12:40

Okay, so after the gin and tonic yesterday, I am doing this properly from today. Have had a few days of breaking myself in gently now.
Today have had 2 boiled eggs, fried mushrooms and a few cherry tomatoes for breakfast and coffee with cream, no sweeteners. Not hungry but really craving something sweet.
How long does it take to get into ketosis usually?

lasttimeround · 09/01/2017 12:59

I think generally takes 3-5 days for ketosis but no great expert - for me it's just over 3 days usually.

I broke out the 30 day shred did this morning. It's been years but I still hate that woman. Might keep an eye out for another quick and effective workout did. Any recommendations?

lottieandmia · 09/01/2017 13:54

I'm on day 6. I'm pretty sure I'm in ketosis because I don't feel like eating any of my children's crisps! Also I love hot, sweet tea but I'm not even craving that. I think if you're very strict it can happen quickly.

Aderyn2016 · 09/01/2017 14:36

I have found callenetics to be good in the past. You get strong and toned very quickly if you can survive the boredom. It is based on very slow precise movements that work every muscle.

thenightsky · 09/01/2017 15:37

I did callenetics many years ago after having DS. I had 6 months to get back into work clothes. Callenetics was boring and took an hour every day, but it bloody works!

StuntNun · 09/01/2017 15:42

I second Wombat's tip to take measurements. When I first started I measured everything: bust, waist, hips, thighs, wrists etc. but definitely measure your waist as a minimum, and hips too. You can lose inches from your waist or hips while your weight stays the same which means you are burning fat.

Guinefort it does take longer for some people to start losing than others so stick with it. Once you start to feel less hungry and more healthy then you won't want to eat any other way.

Aderyn butternut squash is carby. Courgette ribbons (made with a potato peeler and and fried in butter) are good instead of pasta. I also like to have fried mushrooms with bolognese instead of pasta. Otherwise I tend to make an extra vegetable side rather than have a potato substitute.

I don't go into ketosis unless I cut carbs below 20g (I am very intolerant of carbs). I hate being in ketosis as it makes me feel really jittery. It's not necessary to lose weight anyway so don't worry whether you're in ketosis or not.

LastTime I love the 30 day shred. It's swearing at JM that keeps me going through the tough bits! Mountain climbers are brutal. If you fancy giving kettlebells a try then Kettlebell for Beginners is good. Unless you're already pretty fit then I suggest starting with a 4kg kettlebell. I started with the recommended 8kg kettlebell and had to move down a notch to 4kg! I also find Pilates to be a brilliant way to tone up; if you can't get to a class then Darcy Bussell's DVD is quite good.

wombattoo · 09/01/2017 17:52

I was coming on to say that some are getting too worked up about ketosis. It is not necessary for weight loss but Stunt has beat me to it.
Welcome back Mrsk

nekobus · 09/01/2017 18:34

Weighed in this morning - stayed the same at 179 (but hugely relieved I'm not back over 180!) I'm blaming 2 things - the Christmas carbs I was hoovering up right before starting and my period arrived 4 days in which seems to happen to me each time I go hardcore boot camp!!

Today:
B - flax bread, butter, marmite. Coffee and cream, tea and soya
L - chicken, avocado, dressing, lc-ish coleslaw (5g per 100g, only had a spoonful!)
D - probably salad, avocado, olives, chicken wings
S - 2 babybel

lasttimeround · 09/01/2017 19:00

I dunno about making too much of being in ketosis. I know it's possible to lose weight without being in ketosis. The weightloss is from the csn deficit but in ketosis I find it hugely easier.
Anyway I have a shorter cdllanetics dvd. Haven't tried it yet as I do find the Callan lady kind of freaky but yes effective but bo-ring

StuntNun · 09/01/2017 19:29

LastTime everyone has a different carb tolerance. You may well find that when you're in ketosis you get the full appetite-suppressing effect which is a great boost to weight loss. Others may have a higher carb tolerance and be able to lose weight easily without being in ketosis. There are also effects of your previous dieting history, medical conditions, medications, and how much weight you have to lose. You don't have to be in 'deep' ketosis to be producing a beneficial quantity of ketone bodies. As far as I remember Volek and Phinney define nutritional ketosis as starting at 0.5 mmol/l which would only show up as trace on a ketone stick.

Bootcamp is a low carb approach, or more technically a low carb-high fat diet that is primarily designed for weight loss. A ketotic diet is used as a medical treatment, traditionally for epilepsy, but it is also being used in other conditions such as cancer. If you don't have one of these conditions then you don't need to be as strict as a ketotic diet, the LCHF approach is adequate. If you are particularly metabolically damaged, insulin resistant or diabetic then a lower carb approach may be advantageous or necessary.

MiniCooperLover · 09/01/2017 20:08

After a couple of glasses of wine at the weekend I've been very strict today, I think.

B: Scrambled eggs cooked in butter with cream and smoked salmon
L: Gammon steak with salad doused in Olive Oil and mayo
D: Prawns cooked in butter on a green salad with avocado, cheese and mayo.

Lots of water and no snacks today.

lasttimeround · 09/01/2017 20:58

That's all verr interesting stuntnun. I just meant we can talk of what we want. For me thats getting into ketosis

Mmmm- prawns sound nice. I could do with more seafood I think.

Had a blip on Saturday night but managed to get straight back on LCHF from Sunday and still sticking to it. Carbs aren't yet totally irrelevant but I don't really feel tempted to eat them.

Weighed in today - from last Weds to this morning have lost 2lbs and am back at the weight I was at end of last bootcamp. I did lose a bit more just before Christmas and then regain it, but didn't record these as 'official' weigh-ins.

Goals for this week

  1. Water!
  2. More regular mealtimes, when possible
ChesterDrawers · 10/01/2017 08:22

Fucked up yesterday. First day back at work, lunchtime soup was horrible so I was hungry, then roadworks meant it took two and a half hours to get home. I was cold, tired and fed up so I ate half a packet of Maltesers, a Fudge and about half a dozen Tangfastics as soon as I walked int he door Blush

Today will be better...

B: eggs, butter, cream
L: Left over chicken in toms and LC veggies
D: Salmon wrapped in ham, roast asparagus, swede mashed with butter

Also got a HIIT class booked at the gym later so hopefully that will make me a bit more motivated to eat better.

BetsyM00 · 10/01/2017 11:04

Oh dear Chester, time for a house purge of all rubbish food?

First day for me passed okay, though I can feel the day 2 headache starting. Think I should go and do some exercise too!
