Welcome everyone!

We have around 130 people signed up this time, so it's going to be a busy and fast-moving thread.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to enter your weight.

The lovely Sayrra manages the spreadsheet. Please don't mess with it! Just enter your weight and leave all the other columns/rows alone!

I'll start a questions thread to run along side this chat thread, so that you can post stuff there in the knowledge that your question will definitely be seen. (I can't promise to get to your questions immediately, but I will read and answer them)

And please, please, please - no matter how fast-moving the thread is, please read the whole thing and don't just post your own thing. You'll miss a lot of valuable stuff that way, and it also presumes that I (and other posters) are happy to keep repeating stuff.

But above all, very good luck everyone!

I've noticed cream does really vary from brand to brand. Yeo Valley organic single cream has fewer carbs (2.2) than Waitrose own double cream (2.6).

LadyAntonella · 18/05/2016 14:37

ClopySow - caveat I'm not an expert at all! I am so sorry if I am spouting bollocks here, but, I read that low fat, low carb diets (like Dukan) lead to dangerously high consumption of protein; if you break down what percentage of your diet is from fat, carbs, protein and then you take away both carbs and fat you will be consuming a high percentage of your calories from protein. This can be bad for one's kidneys I understand.

Even if the above is utter bollocks, (if so I apologise), I think you would probably lose a lot of weight if you did low fat, low carb, (I know people who have), but I know that personally, I wouldn't last five minutes on it and would fall spectacularly off the wagon. (Everyone I know did and they regained the weight they had lost pretty quickly).

If you've been using Elmlea, throw it away! It's fake cream.

Wand I agree with the others, it doesn't look like you're eating much, plus the protein you're eating is generally quite lean, so you'd better off using fattier meats/fish.

As for thickening sauces, do a hard boil to reduce it, which will give you more flavour anyway! But you don't need a sauce to be thickened with flour.

Some stats on cream:

Sainsbury's Double Cream - 2.6g carbs per 100ml
Sainsbury's Extra Thick Double Cream - 1.5g carbs per 100ml
Elmlea Double Cream Alternative - 3.9g carbs per 100ml

Ingredients:

Sainsbury's Double/Extra Thick Double cream - milk

Elmlea Double Cream Alternative - Buttermilk (63%), Vegetable Oils in varying proportions (35%) (Palm, Rapeseed), Buttermilk Powder, Emulsifiers (E435, E322 (from Soya)), Lactose, Stabilisers (E412, E410), Colour (E160a)

I'm making a Mexican rack be for dinner, it looks lovely say on my side waiting for dinner. Smile

Titsalinabumsquash · 18/05/2016 14:49

Mexican taco bake! .... Bloody autocorrect. Angry

Mookbark · 18/05/2016 14:53

That's weird - look at my photos. Definitely double cream and only 1.5g according to the back. Confused
Tits sounds lovely.

Cloud bread - do you have to use sweetener?

BIWI · 18/05/2016 14:54

And by comparison, milk (all Sainsbury's):

1% fat (orange top) 4.9g carbs per 100ml/1g fat
Semi-skimmed (green top) 4.6g carbs per 100ml/1.8g fat
Skimmed (red top) 4.7g carbs per 100ml/

Mook that's interesting - nutritional info I posted is from their website, which is evidently wrong! I did wonder why it was so much more than the extra thick stuff.

Mookbark · 18/05/2016 14:59

Yes, odd, isn't it? Also, the couple of people who were in the staff room at work probably think I am odd for going in and taking a couple of photos of a cream carton. Grin

BIWI · 18/05/2016 15:01

ClopySow - we eat a high fat diet because:

  • it's more satiating, so you won't feel hungry or deprived between meals
  • it's good for you; your body needs it
  • it doesn't provoke an insulin response, as do both carbs and protein

Although the insulin response from protein is much less, it's nevertheless there, and as we're aiming to keep our blood sugar levels stable, we're trying to avoid these spikes of insulin

This is called gluconeogenesis, and this blog explains it very well

Your friend is totally wrong to say that low fat is better. There's also no evidence that saturated fat causes coronary heart disease, before he/she goes off down that track!

poorbuthappy not according to this recipe!

Last night I also pulled the skin /fat layer off the pork and put it under the grill to make crackling... Then ate most of it Blush Is there such a thing as too MUCH fat?? (by bootcamp or any other standards!)

BIWI · 18/05/2016 15:11

Nope!

My planned lunch of mozzarella salad turned into a chicken, mozzarella and avocado salad. I was hungry. I'm not anymore. Grin

We're going away for two days tomorrow. I've just been looking at the menus online of where we're staying, and it doesn't look very LC. Looks like I'll be having steak and veg, and a fry up for breakfast. Lack of wine is bound to annoy me, but I'm sure I'll survive. :)

WanHeda · 18/05/2016 15:19

Someone in the last few pages mentioned having sweetcorn for lunch - I am pretty sure that's a big no-no, even on BC Lite!

BIWI · 18/05/2016 15:22

Quite right WanHeda - I did post about that, but it got lost when Mumsnet was swallowed up by all the biscuits!

Sweetcorn is horrifically high in carbs (although I guess there's a clue in the name!) 18.5g carbs per 100g.

Catered event at Uni - food was pizza, chips, sandwiches and sausage rolls! I ate the topping from a slice of pepperoni pizza and a small handful of chips. Will probably pay for that though!

poorbuthappy · 18/05/2016 15:29

Oooo lovely thank you BIWI

magicalrealistmum · 18/05/2016 16:19

Hi
first time LC and BC

too much food ?

B 2 egg omelet, omelet, 1/2 avocado, ocoffee and cream
L Quorn pieces (seem lower carb than fillets), mushroom , chilli, and cream with coleslaw (homemade) and 1/2 avocado
D tbc

Feeling OK, nightmares and a bit flu like today but not so bad. Upset tum possibly from all the cream(?) as I don't normally have cream at all.

Fridge full of lovely veg, fish etc so will meal plan for next few days, I eat fish and diary but not meat. Slight craving for hot choc .....

I'm on hypertensive medication so keeping close eye on BP, so far all good

Thanks for setting this up and all the great support

I'm KOKO and looking forward to saying goodbye to extra weight

DietChic · 18/05/2016 16:24

Ok! I'm on the spreadsheet! Exciting.

breakfast was smoked mackerel, buttered spinach and a poached egg.
lunch was steak mince
dinner likely to be chicken breast in a green thai curry sauce with some veg (no rice). Should keep me under 20 carbs I think.

WanHeda · 18/05/2016 16:26

I just made crackling, it's fantastic, if I do say so myself Grin

Titsalinabumsquash · 18/05/2016 16:31

I can confirm that taco bake was tasty and delicious and even my kids wolfed it down except baby dd because she eats nothing ever

500g mince beef
Shallots
Courgette
Pepper (I know these are high carb but it's 1 between 6-8 people)
Mexican species (mix from Tesco)

Fry it all up, stick it in a dish, top with lots of cheese, bake.

Serve on a bed of shredded lettuce, cucumber and top with more cheese, guacamole ( mashed avocado in my case) and a dollop of sour cream.
