Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - where you get to make a decision!

BIWI · 01/02/2016 14:41

Afternoon all! Apologies for the later than usual start to this week's chat thread.

Here's the spreadsheet

I was up so early I completely forgot to weigh this morning Blush

Now. It's week 3, so you get to decide. Do you want to move onto Bootcamp Light, or do you want to stay on Bootcamp? Or, do you want to do both - Bootcamp during the week, and then relax at the weekend, with Bootcamp Light?

The rules for Bootcamp Light are at the bottom of the spreadsheet, but in a nutshell it means you can add nuts/seeds (occasionally, and in moderation); you can eat some fruit - mainly berries, and again in moderation, and you can have the occasional alcoholic drink - again, stick to spirits and wine.

If you're happy staying on Bootcamp, that's fine - but if you decide to do this, please make sure you're getting most of your carbs from veg and salad, and not from other processed foods, otherwise you won't be getting optimal nutrition.

And now for the warning! It's very, very common in weeks 3 and 4 (and sometimes even 5) for weight loss to slow/stop altogether. If this happens to you, please don't be disheartened. It's your body catching up with you! KOKO, and things will soon start to move again - albeit that you're more likely to see smaller weekly losses, around 1-2lbs a week.

I hope so too, Too - that's a horrible thing to go through Sad

And I agree with PP - it's really helpful to post when you're struggling, because if any of us can identify things to work on, it helps other people too.

Sorry for lack of posting lately - have been suffering with some kind of viral thing & pretty much just been working and sleeping. I've kept LC, but have been over-relying on processed stuff unfortunately (preprepared salads, ready-cooked chicken etc) and not enough water.

I'm starting to come out of the worst of it now, so will get back on the wagon properly.

Could some kind soul please update the spreadsheet for me? I lost 3lbs last week and 2lbs this week (Friday is weigh day for me). Unfortunately the scale that said I'd lost 2 stone over a weekend was lying Smile

I've been out to dinner with the children tonight - we went to Gourmet Burger Kitchen and I had a 'naked' burger - no bun, dressed coleslaw and a side salad. I have to say, it was delicious! I really enjoyed it.

(On another note, I'm staying

BippityBoppity · 05/02/2016 20:21

Bum! Anyway, I'm staying in a hotel tomorrow all by myself! I'm taking my tablet, and kindle and lots of lovely LC snacks. I'm going to sleep, have a lovely long bath and read. I can't wait!

DrDiva · 05/02/2016 20:38

No time for breakfast this morning, so ate lunch early - cheese, gherkins, three cherry toms and the leftover salmon parcel from last night. Then ate tea early - chicken soup with cream cheese. Now on way home slightly peckish but not the ravening wolf I usually am.

Moanranger · 05/02/2016 20:55

Hi, I would like to join this group, have been low carving on my own for awhile, but how, exactly, do I join?
Thanks!

Wombatinabathhat · 05/02/2016 21:21

Moan Welcome. In the first post is a link to the spreadsheet. Add your name to the bottom and your weight in the relevant column. (put it in last mondays date) and you're in!
There are some tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet with carb counts for some veg and links to relevant reading.
Feel free to post anything, including what you are eating It's as easy as that.
If you can't link or post on the spreadsheet, then post it here and someone will do it for you. please don't touch the blue columns on the spreadsheet

Wombatinabathhat · 05/02/2016 21:22

Oh and Moan - you don't have to use the spreadsheet. You can just post here.
How long have you been low carbing and have you lost much weight?

ChesterDrawers · 05/02/2016 21:32

Too we're going through similar at work at the minute, awful isn't it? I've managed to avoid the chop thus far, but more news is on the horizon so who knows?! Well done with keeping on the low carb - I failed this week.

Odd day today, no appetite but hungry, if that makes any sense.
B: 2 babybels, BPC
L: kale crisps, chunk of cheddar
D: chicken wrapped in Parma ham, swede chips, roast broccoli

hefzi · 05/02/2016 21:53

Thanks for the help, wombat and BIWI Flowers I'm eating fairly hefty amounts of veg, but I am a veggie and protein-wise, I can only tolerate cheese (I hope Grin) and eggs. (Before this WOE, I was using things like beans and lentils etc as well) But yes, I definitely need more variety - atm, I'm having what I feel like I fancy, but it will get old fast I know.

I've been a bit seedy the last couple of weeks - not carb 'flu, just some meh something or other - but I need to get off my backside and start being a bit more imaginative food-wise: tonight, I'm having a pseudo-green Thai curry, which is pretty darn exciting by my standards Grin I am definitely going to avoid dairy until after Monday, though, and see how the weekend goes.

shouldIblowthewhistle I think leg cramps can be a lack of potassium too - I think it's in things like meat and nuts, as well as Lo Salt, if you use that.

Gcalgske · 05/02/2016 22:08

My appetite woke up as hubs was eating a big plate of Bolognaise. Had a wee spoonful of the meat sauce with courgettie and made a quick fathead garlic pizza bread. Hit the spot.

Moanranger · 05/02/2016 22:34

Well, I downloaded the Google thingie but still had no joy with editing the spreadsheet. Do you open it directly? Open it via the app?
In the meantime could some sign me up as Moanranger - 192 lbs?
Thanks

Wombatinabathhat · 06/02/2016 07:23

I've added you Moan

BIWI · 06/02/2016 08:38

Welcome Moan! (Love the name Grin)

hefzi if you're a veggie, have a look firstly at the Bootcamp recipe thread - there are some lovely recipes on there that you could make (it's stickied at the top of the Bootcamp topic). Also, Rose Elliott has written recipe book for her Low Carb Vegetarian Diet which is really worth looking at. Some really good and very tasty recipes in there.

shouldiblowthewhistle · 06/02/2016 08:40

heflzi thanks - I think I might get some potassium supplements as I was already wondering if that might have been it.

Question: I'm fairly sure I'm fat adapted (I forget to eat during the day and believe me, this is not usual) but do I also need to count calories in order to lose weight? In other words, if I'm doing LC properly (plenty of water, no alcohol, 5% carbs, 20% protein and 75% fat macros), does it matter if I'm eating 2200 calories and not exercising much? Or should I stick to around 1500? I have between 4 and 5 stone to lose. Ouch.

I made some grain free granola last night, had that for breakfast with greek yog. Yum :) (last time i made it, i burnt it)

feekerry · 06/02/2016 11:16

Couple of bad days here due to my little boys 2nd b day so full week of strict bc starting today.
Already on my 2nd l of water today

knowclue · 06/02/2016 11:25

Flowers for everyone for making it to the weekend!

heflzi if you like coconut water (not milk) it's a good natural source of potassium, helped me get through the early stages of carb flu (smile)

Another really hectic day yesterday, started at 7:30 but didn't leave until gone 8pm, staffing issues (again...) subsequently it was graze and run.Bar a hard boiled egg mashed in mayo and butter for brekkie I could only nibble at the meals I'd brought in, too knackered to eat when I got home. Didn't break from LCing, but didn't eat enough so to avoid the big stick I'm not declaring anything!

Today Im cooking for a family get together so it's the LC Saturday challenge for me. Weight is down (yay!!) that's given me the boost to keep going, planning
B: coffee with cream
L: salad with cold chicken
D: salmon in lemon, celeriac roulade, mange tout, prob broc for me and carrots for everyone else, celeriac chips ( OD on the celeriac!)

BIWI · 06/02/2016 11:29

shouldi

I've taken a good hard look at myself in the mirror, and have decided/realised that drinking alcohol isn't worth not losing weight. I've had a pretty poor week in terms of LC: 4 pints of beer last night

What?! Beer is the worst thing you could be drinking! Not for nothing is it sometimes called liquid sugar! If you have to drink, you should be drinking spirits or dry wine. Please, please give the beer up. You will never lose the weight if you keep drinking it.

some tasting of students' cooking (bread and hotcakes)

Have you read Bootcamp rules? You must know that this is really going to sabotage you. Why did you have to taste them?!

only around 2l water per day

Again, have you read Bootcamp rules?! It's really important that you keep up the water.

Is anyone else having leg cramps? I've been woken several times a night with leg/feet cramps this week. I eat plenty of salt and take magnesium every day. What other supplements should I be taking?

Agree that you should look into adding potassium. You could try Lo-Salt on your food, as well as you keep using salt as well.

BIWI · 06/02/2016 11:31

Oh, and I forgot shouldi, if you have that much to lose, don't bother counting calories. Just focus on doing low carb properly. Follow Bootcamp rules. It is, after all, designed to make it as simple and as easy to follow as possible - so there's no weighing or counting of anything!

You just have to follow it of course ... Wink

OP posts:
BIWI · 06/02/2016 11:33

Coconut water has 5g carbs per 100ml

This means it's DEFINITELY NOT something you should be drinking during Bootcamp.

BIWI · 06/02/2016 11:34

Bootcamp recipe thread

It's really worth having a read of these recipes - there are some lovely things here, and plenty of them are veggie too

blackteaplease · 06/02/2016 11:40

Oh oh. I have just re-read the rules and realised why the pounds yoyo at the weekend. Last night I had 1 small alcohol free beer and last week I had 2. I thought that alcohol free would be ok but but beer is not allowed.

Bother, I may have to find a new pretend alcohol to drink.

Moanranger · 06/02/2016 11:48

It's been a nightmare few months for weight control. Last July I spent a week at a slimming spa & dropped a stone, so my body is perfectly capable of losing weight. I then joined WW for the rest of the year, but my weight crept up - too carby IMO.
Today I made a commitment to lose 10 lbs in the next month - said this to my partner this a.m. & now on thread, so hope you lot can provide the support/kick in the bum that I need.
I went dry in Jan, so staying off booze is ok, & I have some good low carb cookbooks, & hope to browse this thread's as well. Spent last night when I couldn't sleep chopping carrots & making a batch of tuna mayo. Chicken thighs are defrosting for tonight's dinner, cauliflower faux mash is prepped in fridge, along with lots of low carb veg in fridge. So I am prepared!
My new year's resolution was to eliminate sugar from my diet anyway, so low-carbing reinforces that.
Breakfast scrambled eggs cooked in butter & smoked salmon, coffee & water.

BIWI · 06/02/2016 11:53

Alcohol-free lager can be around 5g carbs per 100ml, (obviously depending what brand you're buying), so if you're drinking one 500 ml bottle you're drinking 25g carbs.

Definitely not an option on Bootcamp!
