Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - the questions thread

In the first week or so of Bootcamp, the chat thread tends to move very quickly, so if you have any specific questions, post them here - and then there's more chance that they will get spotted!

Hi. I am toying with low carb and your boot camp, nut I see looking at your rules you say no nuts. Why is this? I can't have dairy so nuts are an important plant based protein source for me. I typically have 1 portion a day.

Hi Bank I may be wrong, but I think the no nuts is only for the first two weeks, then you can have some nuts. Are you veggie?

Can you do this while breastfeeding? I managed to shift half a stone this time last year with bootcamp then fell off the wagon and got pregnant.

Baby is due next week and I was wondering about joining the next round of bootcamp but I wasn't sure how compatible it would be with a tiny baby.

No not veggie, but I also don't eat meat/eggs every meal! And I have to limit the amount of pulses I eat (gets a bit windy ).

re milk in coffee\ tea etc, can you have cream but not milk in coffee and tea, or is better to have milk substitutes or no coffee or tea?

Bank you don't eat any pulses on BC so that won't be a problem!

black yes but if BF then you can go straight to BClite, some on the main thread are BFing while BCing

regenerationfez you can have cream in tea/coffee or you can have a milk alternative such as nut milk but make sure it is unsweetened and check the carbs.

I just wanted to point out to any newbies to be careful with carrots and baby corn.

I did not notice when I started there were 2 carb counts for carrots (2.5 and 6) I have seen carrots labelled in supermarkets with 6, 7.7 and 7.9 so don't be lulled into a false sense of security by that 2.5!!

Also very oddly baby corn is labelled as 2.7, 6.4 and 19.6 depending on where you buy it ...

The 19.6 was the same as corn on the cob so I think that was an error and we can ignore that value for baby corn.

The lower carb content of 6 for carrots and 2.4 for baby corn was after it had been boiled. If you steam, roast or eat your veg raw then I think that means you need to be looking at the higher values.

A good rule of thumb is that if the veg is green you can eat it and if it isn't it is probably too carby for BC. (Remember peas are legumes NOT veg)

The two carb counts for carrots are to do with them being either young or old. However, as I can never tell which is an old carrot or which is a young carrot, generally I'd advise you to use them very sparingly!

And baby sweetcorn is a funny one - we concluded one bootcamp that it must be something to do with the variety that was grown. Again, use them sparingly.

But generally you're right - if it's green, and it's not a pea or a broad bean, you're usually OK!

MissFitt - on Bootcamp there's no daily allowance. Just follow Bootcamp rules. Which means:

most of your carbs should be coming from veg/salad
try and stick as much as possible to those veg on the list that are 3g per 100g or less (that's not to say you can't have others, but go easy on those)
avoid processed food as much as you can - this is not only things like processed meats (bacon, sausages, ham etc) but also processed foods in general - so tinned/jarred/packet foods.

If you are buying stuff in tins/jars/packets, then the carbs per 100g is the figure to look for, but this also is variable. Something like mustard, for example, which was referred to before, can be quite carby. 100g of Colman's English mustard is 13g carbs. But you are very, very, very unlikely to be eating that amount of mustard!

So you need to consider how much of something you're going to eat and then decide if that's going to be too carby or not.

As a general rule, I'd rule out anything that's over 5g carbs per 100g, if it's something you're going to eat in quantity.

I'm struggling because I fancy something sweet. I'm drinking lots of liquorice tea, but is there anything else I can either drink or eat that can satisfy my sweet tooth?

I sometimes have the Twinings caremalised Apple or bakewell tart green teas. Very nice.

On the subject of tea, I really struggle to give up milk in my tea and it is this that causes me to derail. Lacto free milk had 3 carbs per 100 compared to 4.8 for semi skimmed. Is it ok to have this occasionally?

You can drink full fat double cream. I used it in my coffee and occasionally drank some it was fine and did not take me out of ketosis.

Other things I used.

Tuna, eggs and salad

Bacon, shallots and cabbage fried. A dash of pepper.

Omelettes with shallots, mushrooms and lots of cheese grilled over.

Pork scratching.

M&s crispy bacon (ready to eat)

Rib eye steak. Mmmmm

High quality ham

Full fat Mayo.

Evian water. You will get thirsty.

Keto stix

Cheese.

All of the above kept me in ketosis.

As did Biwi. I had to pm her a few times as I did feel a tad poorly.

Go for it girls. Sugar is evil!

Unsweetened almond and hazlenut milk is 0.1g/100ml. Be careful in coffee shops as they use soya for professionals milk which is 3g/100ml. Ok for a splash in coffee or tea but don't have a capuccino/latte with it.

BIWI I know sweeteners aren't recommended but as a treat what do you think about the Monin sugar free syrups? They are 10g/100ml.

Can I have celeriac mash? Was planning it for tonight, but seen elsewhere that it's quite carby. Should I do cauliflower mash instead? Or any other good veg to mash?
Sorry, now seem mash obsessed.
