Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - the questions thread

BIWI · 11/10/2015 22:41

In the first week or so of Bootcamp, the chat thread tends to move very quickly, so if you have any specific questions, post them here - and then there's more chance that they will get spotted!

Celariac mash is more carby than cauliflower mash, but less than normal potato mash.

For the moment I'd either stick with cauliflower, or just don't eat much of the mash. I find that because celeriac is quite a strong flavour I'm happy with a small amount of it.

BIWI · 14/10/2015 15:54

Celeriac is fine for mash - sorry, I'm on a train so I can't access the carb counts on the spreadsheet.

Thanks. I've just looked on the carb counter, 2.3g per 100g doesn't sound too bad. I thought I had read somewhere else that it was more carby than that and then started to dither.

BIWI · 14/10/2015 16:24

No sweet things! Honestly!

It's really important to stick to this in the first two weeks - it helps to 're-set' your sweet tooth. You'll be amazed at how sweet things seem afterwards that you never imagined to be sweet.

Poor biwi you must be a saint if all the BC's are like this with all of us trying to sneak some sugar into it??

regenerationfez · 14/10/2015 17:51

Despite fear of the wrath of the almighty, does our 3 litres of water include herbal tea/ tea and coffee? ?

Billionnairewannabe · 14/10/2015 18:19

"Despite fear of the wrath of the almighty" lol regeneration

Without ketostix, how do we know if we're in or out of ketosis? I've tried to follow all the rules hangs head in shame re hot choc but I may have over bamboozled myself reading all the threads?

BIWI · 14/10/2015 18:39

You don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight. That's the first thing you need to know! Even if you were in ketosis, if you're drinking the amount of water you should be, that will be washing away the ketones, so the ketostix will not change very much anyway.

But the most important thing is to follow the rules. Print them out. There are only 10 of them! Grin

A slightly tmi information question but has anybody found that low carving affects their periods?

I have an implant that's due to be changed in March and have had hardly any periods in the last few years (one every 4 or 5 months that lasts a couple of days) since beginning low carbing 2 months ago I had one almost constantly! I'm not sure if it's just coincidence and due to the implant nearing the end of its life or related, I've seen a few things online (saying it's due to increased oestrogen) about it but nothing scientific and the only solution seems to be to eat carbs, I don't want to do that but can't carry on like this indefinantly.

SayrraT · 15/10/2015 07:21

whiter yes it can affect some people's periods. For me it can make them more frequent, it is thought to be because you are burning fat this is releasing oestrogen which is stored in the fat cells.

It should settle down but I do remember that on one BC a BCer did have quite a prolonged period Sad

I usually try and look at on the bright side as it means that I am burning fat but I know that it is not always easy. I am also on the implant, not sure if method of contraception makes any difference though.

whitershadeofpale · 15/10/2015 08:55

Thanks Sayrra that's a pain. I might pop to my GPs. The fat burning's good but I need a break!

Huntthepigsear · 15/10/2015 18:43

Whitershade, I've had something similar but less extreme. Ive only LCed for two weeks (9 days BC light, then BC) and have had a light period for the last 3-4 days. I think it's going now, but I've had to use sanitary wear for the first time in years. I have a mirena coil in and have symptoms (bloating, sore breasts) every month but no bleeding. This time, I've had the bleeding but not the other symptoms! I think I prefer it this way Grin
Hope you get sorted.

whitershadeofpale · 15/10/2015 19:57

That's exactly the same as my experience Hunt I hope it settles down soon.

Generally it's not too bad but I have to remember to buy sanitary wear plus, I'm hoping to DTD this weekend Grin

Huntthepigsear · 15/10/2015 22:27

Thanks whiter, seems to have settled with me.
Hope you can get it sorted, sounds like you have a hot date coming up Wink

weegierama · 17/10/2015 22:21

I'm starting a week late as been away for half term. Just catching upon the threads. BIWI I seem to remember from last bootcamp that there was quite a bit of BPC being drunk. However now it seems a no no. Is that just for the first 2 weeks or right through BC?

BIWI · 18/10/2015 01:00

I would say it's a no no during Bootcamp, but fine from Bootcamp Light.

standinginthedoorway · 18/10/2015 11:00

Hi! Am I too late to sign up? Defs in need of some bootcamp though have been low carbing for a few days. I did weigh myself on the 12th for weight watchers so can sign up with the same weigh in date as the rest of necessary.

Also just wondering, I am a former veggie and having some guilt re the amount of meat I've been eating. Has anyone ever tried BC as a pescetarian or at least mainly eating fish with the odd 'treat' of red meat or poultry?

BIWI · 18/10/2015 12:36

You're welcome to join - just add your name to the spreadsheet

The key thing to remember is that this is a high fat way of eating - it's not always so easy to get fat from fish as it is from meat. But I'm sure it's doable!

standinginthedoorway · 18/10/2015 12:45

Thanks! Will add my name.

Wombatinabathhat · 18/10/2015 17:15

Can anyone tell me if we're allowed to eat fresh coconut please?
I bought some prepared and the pack says 3.5 carbs per 100gms

Mommagonnaknockyouout · 18/10/2015 20:06

Is hummus ok

Wombatinabathhat · 18/10/2015 20:27

I think hummus is no as it's chick peas. They're not allowed on bc

Huntthepigsear · 18/10/2015 20:40

Pretty sure hoummus is a no.
Think coconut milk, oil, cream all ok but not coconut - think Sayrra said it on the other thread.

BIWI · 18/10/2015 20:49

That should be fine, wombat
