Week 4 - January Low Carb Bootcamp - KOKO!

Morning campers!

You know the drill! Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for your delectation

So week 3 is fairly typically a bit of a bastard. And I'm afraid to have to tell you all that week 4 is sometimes its best friend.

Don't panic if the scales aren't moving, or even if you're seeing a slight increase. This is totally totally normal for this period of time

Keep focused, make sure you're following the rules - particularly eating the fat and drinking the water - and things should get going again shortly.

If you're struggling, post here rather than dive into the biscuit tin!

Good luck everyone

Morning Campers :)

Nowits sorry to hear your news Flowers I hope it turns out better than suspected, stay strong lass you're in my thoughts.

Mr Stacks has been at functions sexy parties so the week has been pretty stable for me food wise, not much to tempt me or for me to graze on.
I did lick the spoon from the jam though and must confess to a tiny weeny bit of sf squash in water.
Still not drinking enough bloody water.
He will be home all weekend so it could turn into a bad week, valentine meal will be at home Scots and Yorkies don't pay poncy restaurant prices on Valentines I'm going with steak although I'm terrible at cooking it.

I need to channel no chocolate, DS has bought me a huge milk choc bar that is sat in the fridge calling me like the eye of bloody Sauron.

Have a good un :)

cymrukernow · 13/02/2015 08:50

Nowits sorry to hear about your DM - so unfair . It must be stressful for you all to wait for the MRI. Hopefully there will be an effective treatment for her that they can deal with quickly. I grumble sometimes about the NHS but I find in times of need they're bloody brilliant.

MrsKoala · 13/02/2015 08:54

Oh Nowits i'm so sorry to hear your news. Fingers crossed it has been caught early enough.

DH is up visiting MIL this weekend and we are all over at my mums till Weds. This will be challenging as they are very low fat eaters.

I ate 2 belly pork slices with a green salad and mayo for lunch yesterday and i felt full till dinner. So i do think extra fat is needed. Also i am struggling with water. Must try harder today.

SayraT · 13/02/2015 09:12

amaxapax having had a very quick look at that article and the papers cited in it, it is milk which can cause an insulin spike. We are not supposed to be having milk on BC anyway.

Here is the graph from one of the papers showing BG after ingestion of either: white wheat bread, milk and two different fermented milk products (yogurt?). The lines with the same letters mean that there is no significant difference between the meals (so for bread and all other products there is a difference between in BG after eating and also between milk and fermented milk products - fermented milk causes the lowest BG increase).

The other graph shows serum insulin response after eating these products. It shows that fermented milk products have no significant effect on insulin levels while bread and milk do.

now I am so sorry to hear your news. Take care of yourself.

i am struggling back up after a bad week. Everyone ill, including DS, which meant I had to take yet more time off work. I have the most understanding line manager in the universe, who never blinks at the amount of time I take off, even when I therefore land him in it personally (he had to teach a PG class for me at a couple of hours notice). But there are other things I just have to get done so lots of late nights recently - not good for sensible eating. It also would have been my due date, and I am not pregnant again yet. I am kind of a reverse emotional eater I think, times like this i just stop. And bugger up my metabolism again. It doesn't help that when DS is ill he becomes marmoset child - and happy cooking isn't a possibility. Better in the last couple of days though, and this morning I tried the coconut porridge Delicious!

Still, I count the good things I have got from this bc, and they are myriad, such as drinking much more, and making healthier choices especially for breakfasts and lunches. It has also widened DS's already reasonable diet, and he has happily munched on flaxseed muffins, a myriad of soups, coconut porridge etc. I also feel much more mindful about what I eat. so again, thank you BIWI, even if I still think I should probably be cast out into the wilds beyond bc for being so bad at following the rules!

Sayra you have my every sympathy about finishing the thesis. it's a hard grind! I think I probably hold some kind of record for the shortest time between MPhil/PhD transfer (February) to thesis submission (September same year). My supervisor used to cheerfully regale me with childbirth metaphors ("It's like the head is engaged and you just have to push!") to which I responded with fingers in ears and crossed legs...

Amaxapax · 13/02/2015 09:36

Thanks for looking at that, Sayra. Science stuff like this is definitely not my thing, so I appreciate the explanation.

I've cut out all cheese, but today I've still had a cup of tea with a dribble of whole milk. I'd like to think that won't make a significant difference, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I really enjoy fruit tea in the evening, but there's something satisfying about a proper tea with milk first thing in the morning which I would be sad to do without. I'm already existing in a cheeseless world, and we all have our limits.

sassandfaff · 13/02/2015 09:45

Thanks now My sil had stage 3 cervical cancer a few years ago. It is such a shock and you do feel utterly helpless. Sending positives vibes to your mum.

I managed to weigh myself this morning, and I am still the same as the last weigh in, so would someone mind putting it on the spreadsheet for last monday's weigh in. 194. Thank you.

I never saw my mum diet. She was never bigger than a 14/16. I never heard her mention her weight/size. She did binge slightly in chocolate or cake, but only to the extent that she'd have 2 bars or 2 pieces. I'm lucky in that sense.

I've never followed a diet. Never been to ww or sw. If I wanted to lose weight I would just cut back on chocolate. But the age thing is against me. I'm 40 and this time it wasn't coming off like it used to.

I managed to lose about 1 and a half/ 2 stones since having my 3 yr old. Without a real concerted effort. More like 4lbs in 3 months then maintain for a year! Then a bit more and repeat. But when I actually made a concerted effort, no coke, no chocolate no treats etc, it was making no difference.

I had read about fat being wrongly diagnosed all them years ago and then just stumbled upon more and more info.

So here I am. Grin

SayraT · 13/02/2015 09:50

Thats it added sass

sassandfaff · 13/02/2015 09:57

Thank you sayra

Just thought I'd share the most delicious cream with you. I've tried, asda, aldi, sainsbury's and branded/local cream.

Then yesterday I bought tesco fresh British extra thick double cream. O.M.G.

I was eating it straight out of the pot.

Told dp and he joined in too. It really is scrummy. Grin

nowitsenough · 13/02/2015 10:21

Thank you for all the kind words. I didn't sleep well last night, but am having some quality time tucked up on the sofa with my dog catching up on TV I've recorded. I had bacon and eggs for breakfast, lunch will be roast chicken thighs with salad again, not sure about dinner, there is some gammon left still, might just have that with whatever veg is in the fridge (swede, I think).

Mrsstevejones · 13/02/2015 11:45

Just made little heart shaped dark choc truffles - they are amazing it took all my will power not to stick the spoon in and drink it. Obvs had a little lick of the pouring spoon but not the bowl and spatula and other spoons (messy cook).

I used 2/3 85% choc and 1/3 70% with the zest of 3 oranges - they are very very dark tasting and i should have prob doubled the amount orange zest.

Yum cant wait for tom x

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 13/02/2015 12:57

Lunch -.prawn, avocado shallot and olive salad with olive oil, cumin and lime dressing. Green tea with mint

Notso · 13/02/2015 13:02

Flowers and ((hugs)) now my Mum had breast cancer just over 10 years ago. Try to look after yourself as well as your Mum.

Phoenix Nights was brilliant last night. Had a delicious bunless burger from GBK, it came with green salad, coleslaw and baconaisse which was amazing.
I did have a couple of wine and sodas as well as some peanuts at the venue.
DH parked the furthest he possibly could have done from the arena Hmm so hopefully I burned some of that off power walking back to the car it was freezing!

B coffee with cream
L steak, peppercorn sauce and buttered broccoli (love this WOE!)
D chicken curry with more broccoli I think.

Notso · 13/02/2015 13:09

Forgot to post my minor triumph. I wore my tights yesterday and despite all the walking they stayed up. I'm usually hiking them up every 2 mins as my flab pushes them down.

LexLoofah · 13/02/2015 13:13

Morning all

Am at conference venue, ignoring the standard breakfast of fruit and pastries as I had scr eggs with cheese and half avocado for breakfast. Was nearly sick straight after so hopefully just a bit too rich or ate too quickly and not a bug that would be dreadful today. Will catch up later, have a good day all and now you are doing the right thing looking after yourself.

MrsKoala · 13/02/2015 13:13

Okay. I think i am just greedy. I had 3 large egg, spinach, mushroom and cheese omelette (cooked in a lot of butter) for breakfast and 2 hours later was starving. Had 2 sausage, bacon lardon, leeks and mushrooms fried in butter with broc covered in...er... more butter last night for dinner and woke at 3am starving. Apart from the belly pork slices i had yesterday nothing seems to be keeping me going for more than 2-3 hrs.

Not sure what to have for lunch now. Too tired to prepare anything (DS1 didn't go to bed till 1am and DS2 was up every hour after that). There is feta cheese and boursin in the fridge and salad leaves, but i feel like something hot and hearty like a chunky soup.

Does anyone know if you can you drink marmite like bovril?

vdibley · 13/02/2015 13:23

sass this is the same double cream I was raving about a few days ago - so delish!

I've been poorly and have slacked off a bit. Haven't been punished for it by the scales so far - I find this often leads to short-term sense of invincibility, followed by more slackness, then followed by eventual woosh in wrong direction...

Will drink more water immediately and do better this weekend.

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 13/02/2015 13:37

Yep mrsK, marmite is drinkable (and rather nice!)

I just drank what was left of my salad dressing. I think my fat will be okay for today Grin

dixiejo · 13/02/2015 13:43

Hello all
Well done to everyone on their losses, even through some tough times Flowers

I think I need help from BIWI and the rest of the Hive, please Smile

I am 5’ 2”. I started out at a few pounds over 11 stone and I aim to lose a stone. I was really pleased to lose 6 lb in the first week. The 2nd week I put on 2 lb. Now, to be completely honest, in the weekend at the end of the 2nd week I went a bit mad and self-sabotaged. After that I had a stern word with myself, re-read the rules and got back on track for the 3rd week. But at the 3rd week weight-in I had put on 1 more lb. I was a bit disheartened but put it down to TOTM and the 3rd week plateau. I had a few glasses of wine at the weekend but, after that, have stuck faithfully to the rules this week.

I just had a sneaky Friday weigh-in and I have STS this week Sad Now I realise I am not going to see the weight loss that I saw in the first week and would be delighted with a pound or so each week but I think I need a fresh pair of eyes on this.

Could you please help me figure out where I am going wrong?

A typical day’s food would be:

BF – BPC with double cream, sometimes plus Total FF yogurt

LUNCH – boiled eggs
or
scrambled eggs with smoked salmon

or

tuna mayo followed by celery with FF boursin or philly

DINNER – salmon with leeks and crème fraiche
or
fried chicken with broccoli
or
steak with swede chips

or
roast chicken with broccoli (I like broccoli !!)
or
homemade chilli con carne (without chilli beans) with broccoli and sour cream

WATER – at least 3 litres

Ex – 30 day shred 5 times a week (level 3)

In addition to my breakfast coffee, I would usually have 2 more coffees with double cream during the day (all with caffeine); all other hot drinks are fruit teas.

I haven't snacked in the last 2 weeks. I cook with butter and oil and add butter to the veg on my plate.

Any advice or insight would be very gratefully received.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 13/02/2015 13:51

Right, yesterday was 0.5 pounds away from being just 'overweight' rather than obese. It's three days until my 40th so I'm going to take that as a small victory as I'm off on holiday tomorrow.
Will try and check in if wifi is decent, sticking to plan but there may be a little more alcohol involved.....

SayraT · 13/02/2015 14:08

Hi dixie

Was the wine at the weekend just this weekend passed? In that case it is likely that the wine has had an effect on weight-loss.

A typical day’s food would be:

BF – BPC with double cream, sometimes plus Total FF yogurt

maybe too much dairy here? Have you tried eggs for breakfast instead?

LUNCH – boiled eggs
or
scrambled eggs with smoked salmon
or
tuna mayo followed by celery with FF boursin or philly

Do you have veg/salad with this? Do you add butter to the eggs? Lunch might be too low in veg/salad and fat depending on what else you add

DINNER – salmon with leeks and crème fraiche
or
fried chicken with broccoli
or
steak with swede chips
or
roast chicken with broccoli (I like broccoli !!)
or
homemade chilli con carne (without chilli beans) with broccoli and sour cream

Better here with vegetables but not a lot of variety. Do you eat the skin of the chicken?

WATER – at least 3 litres

good Grin

Ex – 30 day shred 5 times a week (level 3)

In addition to my breakfast coffee, I would usually have 2 more coffees with double cream during the day (all with caffeine); all other hot drinks are fruit teas.

^All the double cream will add up, maybe try cutting back on coffee with cream?*

I haven't snacked in the last 2 weeks. I cook with butter and oil and add butter to the veg on my plate.

Good

I am not an expert but I'd suggest trying to cut down on dairy (cream) and caffeine as well as adding some more veg/salad to your lunchtime meal

SayraT · 13/02/2015 14:08

Well done natural Grin

lurkingmurking · 13/02/2015 14:49

Oh my I just purchased some smoked butter from the butcher - it is utterly divine!!

dixiejo · 13/02/2015 15:19

thanks Sayra

Seeing it all written down, I think you are right about the vegetables and cream.

OK, I try and fix those [just please don't tell me you are taking away my Wine Angry

sassandfaff · 13/02/2015 16:01

vdibley sorry I missed your post about it. Blush

I can't stop getting the spoon out!

I don't think diary effects me (I thought it did) but I actually think it's nuts. Which is a travesty as I LOVE nuts.

Have a fan time natural
