Preparing for next week's Bootcamp

Evening all!

Well, only 5 days now until we get started. We have a huge number of people signed up this time, and so I'm assuming that lots of you are people who are new to low carbing.

It's really important to be prepared. Eating low carb can be quite challenging - simply because the world isn't designed for us. It's all about low fat and low calorie, neither of which we will be doing.

You also need to know that if you're used to a high carb diet, and you suddenly switch to a low carb one, that you might suffer from what's often called 'carb flu'. You might feel lethargic and headachey and generally rubbish.

So. This is my advice to you.

First, please make sure that you've read the rules of Bootcamp before we start:

Here they are

Print them out, keep reading them, and understand that they will the key to your success.

The idea of Bootcamp is that it's an easy process. There's no counting and no weighing. That's not to say that Bootcamp (or at least the first two weeks) is easy - the clue is in the name Grin - but if you follow the rules it will be straightforward and as easy as possible.

Second, start cutting down your carbs now. Hopefully this will help you avoid carb flu.

The best thing to do is to try and make one meal each day as low carb as you can - why not try with breakfast? If you were to have bacon and eggs, or an omelette, for example, this would be totally carb-free.

Third, make sure you've got rid of as much carby stuff as you can. So all that chocolate left over from Christmas, the biscuits, the crisps etc - get shot of it all. And try not to buy any more! If temptation is there, it's hard to resist. You don't need it - and, being frank, neither do your children or your partners.

Fourth, have a look at your diary for the next couple of weeks, and plan your meals as much as you can, as far ahead as you can. And then make sure that you go shopping so that you have all the necessary low carb options available.

If you have the kind of lifestyle/job that takes you out of the house/away regularly, make sure that you've thought through how you're going to stick to low carbing. What low carb options are going to be available to you?

Fifth, as well as weighing yourself, it's a really good idea to take measurements. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, the scales will show no change, but your measurements will change.

Another thing to consider is to find an article of clothing that currently doesn't fit - something that's a size too small. Have this to hand, and try it one once a week, as well as weighing, so that you can really see your progress. Even if the scales are showing a loss, sometimes this can be a bit 'conceptual' compared with the reality of an item of clothing being obviously looser.

Finally, it is really helpful if you know more about low carbing than we can impart on these threads. You are very likely to come across people who are very anti low carbing - and it can be very easy to crumble in the face of their criticisms. This is especially true if it's coming from a partner, or a parent/best friend. So arm yourself with some information about the science behind low carbing (and be reassured that there is plenty).

One of the best books to read is "Escape the Diet Trap" by Dr John Briffa. Or, "Why We Get Fat (And What To Do About It)" by Gary Taubes.

To quote a very cheesey cliche:

Failing to plan is planning to fail ...

And very finally, if you've done Bootcamp before, perhaps you could add your own tips to help everyone prepare for next week?

Many thanks, and very good luck everyone

Flowers

furfox you have reminded me that there is some prosciutto in the fridge. I can do something with that. Lunch will be leftover roast beef with rocket salad tossed in oaksmoked oil.

juan that's brilliant!

I too have been low carbing lite since the beginning of November, not for weight, thought I lost 7 lbs. am the lightest I have been for a decade at least! Weight loss however is secondary for me, I am doing this for blood pressure - it's fine at the moment, but I want to make sure I keep it that way, and even better if possible. Any tips on that count would be really appreciated.

lurkingmurking · 18/01/2015 20:52

juan that's fantastic well done!

My fridge is groaning under the weight of all the meat and fish!

I've been doing boot camp for about two weeks and it's really suiting me. I'm only slightly concerned that I might be having too much dairy and about carbs in things like sauces. For example, today I made pulled pork in the slow cooker and then added some of this paste: www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=273912655
It's 22.5g of carbs per 100g, but I probably used less than half of the 95g jar, and it will do a few servings. So I think it should work out quite low carb in total, but I find myself really worrying about these things.

I've had this happen before when I'm low carbing. I eat something that I think might be slightly high in carbs, and then I dream that I've accidentally eaten cake or bread and I worry that I've ruined everything.

BIWI · 18/01/2015 21:06

Amaxpax - I wouldn't use sauces like that, if I were you. Have you worked out, actually, how many carbs there will be in a portion? It wounds really high in carbs.

Far better to cook from scratch with stuff that's low carb.

(By the way, I often have those dreams! I wake up thinking I've eaten a whole Mars Bar!)

Amaxapax · 18/01/2015 21:15

Oh, I'm so glad you have those dreams as well. They make me feel like a crazy person.

I think, based on how much I used, there should have been about 2.6g in the sauce in my portion. I had it with an oopsie roll (stupid name), guacamole, sour cream, celeriac crisps and broccoli. In fairness, it was an incredibly delicious meal, but maybe I'll try to keep the carb count lower than usual tomorrow to compensate.

JuanPotatoTwo · 18/01/2015 21:18

Thank you all :) If I can do it, being the sweetest-toothed, most weak-willed quitter on earth, I know that you folks can. BIWI - you are the inspiration. Good luck everyone.

prettybird · 18/01/2015 21:48

Meant to say, I've got a good recipe for a microwave chicken dinner which is yummy and only takes about 10 minutes to prepare. My only concern is that it might be too low in fat.

It's 4 skinless chicken breasts microwaved with slice courgette, sliced leek, one tomato and some olive oil, chicken stock, lemon juice and salt, with chopped parsley over it.

I've wondered if I were to add cream to the "poaching" liquid, it would make it more Boot Camp compatible.

I'll post the full recipe on the recipe thread.

AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons · 18/01/2015 22:32

Are pork scratchings OK during bootcamp? I ask because I wonder if I might try to improvise by using crushed pork scratchings as a breadcrumb replacement for homemade scotch eggs?

BIWI · 18/01/2015 22:37

prettybird - you could always add butter, or olive oil to it?

Alpha - pork scratchings are perfect low carb food, and they are often used to make scotch eggs!

AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons · 18/01/2015 22:48

BIWI - Ah thank you! And there was I thinking I was being all pioneering and original. Grin

AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons · 18/01/2015 22:50

Juan - That's amazing. You really are an inspiration.

prettybird · 18/01/2015 23:45

It's already got olive oil in it - only a tablespoon though. I was a bit more generous with the olive oil this week and cut back on the chicken stock - it was still really tasty.

LexLoofah · 19/01/2015 01:45

amaxapax oppsie rolls is a stupid name isn't it ? I have seen the same thing referred to as cloud bread which is infinitely better! Haven't tried it yet though, had a cauli-tastic weekend so maybe next weekend

alpha I was planning on making scotch eggs and was just going to leave them uncoated, hand't thought of scratchings so thank you

TurnOverTheTv · 19/01/2015 18:29

How did everyone get on? I stuck to the plan, ate delicious things, drank vast quantities of water... This morning I am 4lbs less than yesterday! I know it can't be that easy but what a nice beginning! Hope everyone had a good day and we have all escaped the carb flu...
