This one will last for ten weeks, as usual.

I can cope with that Grin

SixImpossible · 28/09/2014 10:35

AFAIK you can have as many eggs as you like. I often go through 2 dozen eggs a week when bootcamping, and my cholesterol levels drop.

janx · 28/09/2014 11:18

Do you think 10lbs is doable in 10 weeks?

amigababy · 28/09/2014 11:22

I hope so, that's just what I would like to lose too.

StuntNun · 28/09/2014 11:39

10lb in ten weeks is very doable provided you stick to the rules. In the first few weeks eating too many carbs will delay the process of fat-adaption and after that too many carbs will either temporarily stop weight loss or may cause a slight gain if you really overdo it. It's called Bootcamp for a reason: it's tough! But once you see the weight dropping off you'll realise how worth it it is. And it's only ten weeks!

StuntNun · 28/09/2014 11:40

Oh and I got through 23 eggs in three days once. Blush

janx · 28/09/2014 11:44

Right that's my aimGrin

Has anyone read the new book Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore and Eric Westman? Stunt Biwi? Keep seeing it and wondered if it was any good. Any new info. The reviews suggest they are big on ketone meter testing but I'm not going down that route! Its fairly expensive at the mo so I wondered if anyone on here had read it before I buy.

spamm · 28/09/2014 13:23

Please count me in - I was in the last 10 week BC and I have kept it all off and a couple more pounds too.

Going shopping today to make sure I have everything in the house. I have a business trip to Sweden starting 6 October, so I will struggle with that, but as BIWI and StuntNun have said, I have to figure out how to fit these in, as they are part of my daily life.

Miffy remember Jimmy Moore is diabetic and has had a history of difficultly getting his weight down (prompting the invention of the egg fast) so he probably needs to stay in ketosis all the time to control his blood glucose and keep his weight down. The Bootcamp rules more closely follow the Primal eating ethos leaning strongly towards Briffa's recommendations. In the type of WOE then ketosis isn't really important so much as finding the right path for sustained easy weight loss while eating enjoyable foods and lots of them. So no, I'm not in favour of ketone testing, I'd rather have a set of easy to follow rules. Once your used to eating low carb it can become second nature. My idea of pushing to boat out now is having carrots with my dinner!

For low carb travelling Spamm then you're in damage limitation territory. Make the best choices you can from the menu available. If you're in a socially obligated sugar (SOS) situation then just make the most of it and enjoy it. Remember you don't have to eat all of your food, you can eat the low carb stuff on your plate first, or eat half the cake and leave the rest. I pack salted almonds, pork scratchings and Peperamis in my bag so I have low carb snacks available as well.

BIWI · 28/09/2014 13:55

I can't see how cutting out sugar and refined white carbs could be bad for you, keepon! Make sure you're getting your carbs mostly from vegetables and salad, and include some pulses as well, and you should be fine.

mffy I haven't heard of that book - will have a look out for it

janx 10lbs is absolutely doable, although it does rather depend how much weight you have to lose. I'll warn you up front though that this is what's likely to happen:

Weeks 1 & 2 - you could see quite a spectacular weight loss - especially if you have a lot to lose.

Weeks 3 & 4 (and possibly 5) - weight loss slows or stops (and may increase slightly

This is entirely normal and has happened to/been reported by countless other Low Carbers/Bootcampers! Just keep on keeping on and ...

Week 5/6 onwards - steady weight loss of around 1-2 lbs per week (again, depending on how much you have to lose)

ClashCity the only reason we used to be told to restrict the number of eggs we eat is because of the mistaken notion that if you eat cholesterol you will increase your cholesterol. This is now known not to be true, so you can eat as many as you like. (Although I'd warn you off eating as many as StuntNun as you'll get so sick and tired of them you'll never want to see another egg ever again Grin)

Keepon, I've done lower carbs during each of my pregnancies, as I always have increased glucose in my urine in the third trimester. So at that point I cut out all refined carbs, and try to replace the remaining carbs with low GI carbs. I do not increase my fat intake during pregnancy. I certainly felt much better on the reduced carb scheme, and my sugars stabilised beautifully.

ClashCityRocker · 28/09/2014 14:47

Hurrah for eggs! Grin

I've got all the evening meals sorted, and even DH is looking forward to it as there's a lot of tasty things on the menu. I'll just bung some tatties on the side for him.

I think that's what I really like about it, I've tried diets in the past and all to often it involves us not eating together or having to cook two meals, so I'm thinking this WOE could really work for us.

StuntNun · 28/09/2014 14:47

< Beats chest like a gorilla > I LOVE EGGS! I do get a bit embarrassed buying three dozen at a time though. Blush But DH and I have four to six eggs between us each breakfast and I would have eggs for lunch as well quite often. They're high in choline which is supposed to be good for maximising fat burning.

KeepOn your glucose requirement during pregnancy and breastfeeding is a bit higher than at other times and you'll want to stay out of ketosis. So you can eat low carb but add in some healthy carbs such as extra fruit, smoothies, sweet potatoes and the carbier vegetables to the usual Bootcamp rules. You could probably add in some potato and white rice as well but these are gateway carbs for me and lead to me falling off the wagon.

Badvoc123 · 28/09/2014 15:32

Hi all.
I have a question!
I have been trying to low carb on and off since last summer.
I lost 1.5 stone and was really pleased but use to family bereavements, my own illness etc I have fallen off the wagon somewhat!
Anyway, I had my cho,eat world level done last sept and it was 5.2.
After trying to be low carb (I would say I was 80% of the time) prior to getting tested again earlier this month it has gone up to 5.6 :(
Dr says ok, but I know this reading is slightly high (I am 41)
Is it the eggs?
I eat a lot of them when low carbing...or the meat?
What can I do?

Badvoc123 · 28/09/2014 15:45

....of more importantly...what am I doing wrong? :(

BIWI · 28/09/2014 15:48

Eating eggs will not raise your cholesterol level.

And is that all the information you were given? Were you not given a breakdown of your results? On its own, from everything I've read, those scores are meaningless.

Just be glad your doctor isn't pushing you to start taking statins!

By the way, higher cholesterol is better for women, especially as we get older. Lower cholesterol in older women is linked with heart disease.

Let me see if I can find a link for you ...

Here's an interesting piece by Zoe Harcombe

OP posts:
BIWI · 28/09/2014 15:56

And it's worth reading this book if you can - it's really well written and easy to read and debunks a lot of the myths about cholesterol.

Count me in. I did the January boot camp and lost about 1.5 stones but since then have moved jobs and home, lost my willpower and ate a few too many cakes. Have put about 10 pounds on and definitely need at least some of it back off before October half term.

Have stocked up the fridge ready to go. Unfortunately starting with a 2 day work trip so it's really going to test me

BIWI · 28/09/2014 16:06

And here's another piece that gives more specific information

OP posts:
StuntNun · 28/09/2014 16:17

As BIWI says, Badvoc the total cholesterol on it's own is almost useless, you need the breakdown of HDL, LDL and triglycerides as well to be able to make a meaningful interpretation. One possible thing that could be happening is that in someone new to low carbing there is often a temporary rise in cholesterol so if you haven't been low carb for long that could be a factor. My own total cholesterol has gone up by a similar amount since going low carb but my triglyceride levels have plummeted and the ratio of LDL cholesterol to triglycerides is a more important indicator than the level of LDL or total cholesterol on its own. Unfortunately all the initial research into cholesterol focussed on middle aged men and was presumed to extend to the rest of the population. But in this case what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander, or indeed good for the goose that's getting on a bit. In women and in men over 65 higher cholesterol levels appear to be protective rather than damaging.

Yddraigoldragon · 28/09/2014 16:22

Long term low carber here, diabetic so need blood sugar control. I have lost about three and a bit stone in the last year or so, this really does work!
I am more of a lurker than a poster, so no point adding me to the spreadsheet but I wanted to wish you all well, and say thanks to BIWI and the gang for the amazing support and general big stick wielding.
BIWI is there any chance of a scientific type thread listing the articles and good books etc? Bit like the recipes thread that runs alongside each BC? It is easy to lose the links in the general scramble.
