Making my list for shopping. Can't wait to get started on Monday. I feel so much better when Low Carbing.

BestIsWest · 27/09/2014 12:45

I wanted to say to anyone doing this for the first time, don't be disheartened if you don't lose anything in the first week or two. I didn't see any weight loss until week 3 but went on to lose over a stone in the May bootcamp.

miffy49 · 27/09/2014 13:36

I think the initial loss can depend a lot on whether you've been following any sort of lowish carb plan beforehand. A lot of people sort of experiment with cutting back a bit on carbs before they jump in with both feet. They have less glycogen stores to dump before getting into losing proper fat than anyone who has been eating a carb-heavy diet. According to several of the LC experts that I've studied the first 4-5lbs of a big initial whoosh are just water and glycogen so its nothing to get disheartened about if you take longer to get going. Just means that you have less adapting to do. Smile

Did you manage to keep the weight off between BC Best?

JamTree · 27/09/2014 17:54

I got started last Monday and am happy to see a 4lb loss so far! Managed to persuade DH to join us.

BigSpottyCupofTea · 27/09/2014 17:55

What's the best thing to do about cups of tea? I have 6 or so cups a day with ss milk and sugar. Do I have to ditch tea (please say no, please say no)?

BestIsWest · 27/09/2014 17:56

Yes I did Miffy I have been doing BC Light in between apart from this last week when I have eaten some oaty cereal for breakfast each day. I've discovered that on the few occasions recently I've eaten wheat it's made me feel awful so I have cut that out completely anyway.

BestIsWest · 27/09/2014 17:59

I live for tea too but you can't have milk or sugar. I have slowly got used to drinking it black but I think you can have alpro or almond milk in it. Or cream after the non dairy phase is over.

I have used lacto free milk too once you can have dairy and that tasted fine but I don't know what the official line on it is.

BIWI · 27/09/2014 18:04

You can have a little bit of milk - but only a little bit, as it gets very carby very quickly - 6 cups per day will be a lot of milk/carbs!

OP posts:
PseudoBadger · 27/09/2014 18:09

Best - there is no non-dairy phase?

BigSpottyCupofTea · 27/09/2014 18:10

OK will try to do one cup in the morning and one in the afternoon. Are sweeteners OK or is it the same as sugar (guessing it provokes the same physical response more or less)?

miffy49 · 27/09/2014 18:26

That's great Best. I think losing weight LC does seem to help with keeping it off. Maybe its the fact that it retrains your appetite. I've wandered a bit from the path occasionally due to the fact that Its been a struggle to lose any more weight. I have mainly been BC light during my difficult phases rather than totally off-piste but I haven't shown any tendency to pile I back on the way I have in the past doing other plans.

BigSpotty Lacto free is about a third less carbs than normal milk if that helps. I know a lot of the members on the IPD forum swear by it. I never have milk in any drinks so I have no personal experience.

toomuchicecream · 27/09/2014 18:27

I'm in.

I did really well on the bootcamp this time last year and in the spring but missed the start of the summer one. A combination of a very stressful period at work and a fantastic summer holiday mean that more than half of what I lost returned. It's disappearing gradually, but I need the discipline of checking in regularly. I've got trousers that fitted at Easter that aren't comfortable now, and I've bought a new suit (Windsmoor, 80% off) that I can't quite wear out in public yet so I've got some good reasons to stick with it, especially as the weather is getting cooler so I need to fit back into my winter trousers!!

BestIsWest · 27/09/2014 19:23

Sorry, my mistake, I was thinking of the uber Bootcamp.

BestIsWest · 27/09/2014 19:30

Just gone back and read the rules again. Minimal dairy, I had forgotten that. Unlimited butter though Grin.

slothage · 27/09/2014 19:31

Can I join too please?

trashcanjunkie · 27/09/2014 20:08

I am just getting into the lacto-free milk cos I'm newly dairy intolerant. Great to hear it's lower carb. Makes sense...

BestIsWest · 27/09/2014 20:14

Yes, we always have some in the house as DD is lacto- intolerant too. I can't tell the difference taste wise.

Getting complicated in this house with me low carbing, DD not eating dairy and DH has just discovered that red meat makes him ill.

BIWI · 27/09/2014 21:24

So, our meal this evening. (It was extravagant, as we're celebrating DH starting a new job, after being made redundant last year)

Fillet steak
Roasted tenderstem broccoli and asparagus
New potatoes (for DH, not me!)
Cream and mushroom sauce

Roasted tenderstem broccoli and asparagus:

Rinse the broccoli and trim the woody stalks from the asparagus (the easiest way to do this is to bend the stems, and when they snap, throw the woody end away)

Wash thoroughly, and then put them all into a roasting tin. Drizzle generously with olive oil, sea salt and black pepper. Roast on a high heat for around 25-30 minutes. When tender, squeeze the juice of half a lemon/lime over them.

Mushroom sauce:

Dice an onion or 2-3 shallots, and fry till soft in butter with a touch of olive oil
Slice a punnet of chestnut (or ordinary) mushrooms, and add to the pan and continue frying (gently) until softened
Season with salt and pepper, and add two finely chopped cloves of garlic
Add a sloosh of white wine (about a glass full), cook this down, and then add a small tub of double cream.

Continue simmering till everything is soft/cooked.

OP posts:
SixImpossible · 27/09/2014 21:31

Is the dairy-free phase obligatory?

BIWI · 27/09/2014 21:42

No, not at all! But you need to keep an eye on dairy, and keep it to a minimum. And many people realise, after some time on Bootcamp, that dairy causes them problems. So be wary of it!

OP posts:
SixImpossible · 28/09/2014 06:29

I've not had any weight-loss problems with dairy when LCHFing before. I'm lactose-intolerant, so I stick to Greek yogurt, crème fraiche and hard cheese. When you say to keep dairy to a minimum, does that mean I should avoid them during the first few weeks of Boot Camp?

BIWI · 28/09/2014 09:20

No, it just means that you shouldn't cover all your food with cream-based sauces or eat cheese by the block!

OP posts:
starshaker · 28/09/2014 09:46

I'd like to join too. Need to get back into it

ClashCityRocker · 28/09/2014 10:05

Right, I'm ready to go! Meal plans for the next fortnight.

Just out of interest, how many eggs are too much? I'm struggling a bit with low carb lunches as food prep is difficult where I work and we don't have a fridge. Was thinking microwave omelettes, but probably shouldn't have them five days a week - or would it be ok?
