Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the hard work is over!

Morning all!

Well done everyone for getting through the first two weeks. Still a bit of carb flu around by the sound of it though. Remember it's really important to keep your electrolyte levels up, with all the water that we're drinking. This means plenty of salt!

I know we're all told to keep the salt down, but it's (yet another) thing when you're low carbing that runs counter to expectations. Cook with it, and put it on your food.

Here's a really good post about salt and why we need it

As well as sodium, we also need magnesium and potassium - salmon, spinach, avocado and (full fat) natural yoghurt are all good.

Bootcamp Light

So now, if you want to, you can move on to Bootcamp Light. The rules for this are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

(Oh, and don't forget [[www.mumsnet.com/bootcamp the Weight Tracker as well)

Essentially the differences are that you can, if you want, start to skip breakfast if you're not hungry - I know that lots of people have problems with eating first thing. By now you should have stabilised your blood sugar levels, so if you're not hungry in the morning (or at any other time of the day) you don't have to force yourself to eat. Just make sure you don't end up ravenous later on and without anything appropriately low carb to eat!

You can introduce some fruit - berries or rhubarb only (although bear in mind that rhubarb will need to be sweetened, which will mean using an artificial sweetener; stevia is probably the best one to use - brands are PureVia or Truvia.) But be careful not to go mad - it's an occasional thing, and in moderation!

Similarly with nuts and seeds. These can be introduced now as snacks, but go easy. They can quickly add lots of carbs to your diet. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest in carbs. And if in doubt, check the carb count on the back of the packet

And you can also introduce alcohol, but with the same warnings about moderation! Spirits like vodka and gin are the best, as these are low carb - drink them with sparkling water or - if you have to - slimline tonic. Champagne, dry white and red wine are allowed, but these do have carbs, so go easy.

The week 3 (or 4, or 5) stall

PLEASE NOTE! IT IS VERY, VERY COMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER AT THIS POINT.

This is to do with your body switching from carb-burning to fat-burning - StuntNun posted a really good post about this last week, I think, and I'll ask her to re-post. It is entirely normal and doesn't signal that you're doing anything wrong.

However - you may feel, knowing this, that you want to stay on Bootcamp for a bit longer. There is no problem doing that, as long as you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad. You may want to consider doing Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

So good luck everyone! Here's to another good week Flowers

I've certainly felt that way in the past - the compliments have just made me mortified about how I used to look or make me feel like someone is outrightly saying I used to look bad.
But I do seem to find it easier to accept them these days.

Notso · 23/05/2014 21:18

Thanks for the boost StuntNun I really want to get back on track because if nothing else I feel so good on this WOE.
Whilst the bad carbs I have eaten tasted nice for a few minutes, the sluggish, bloated feeling I have been left with is horrible.

I also do the zombie food roam. I find sniffing vanilla extract can help take away the 'taste' craving.

Notso · 23/05/2014 21:29

That is exactly how I feel Foreskin so conflicted. I think my poor DH feels like he is walking on egg shells half the time.
Hope we can both get back on the wagon tomorrow, belly pork and kale sounds good Smile

I am like that on my own Minty if other people are around I eat hardly anything.
I find it hard with DH and the DC as although they don't need crisps and chocolate etc I don't think it is healthy for my DC to think these foods are banned.
I have adapted a few ways of coping with having this stuff tin the house but it is difficult.

antimatter · 23/05/2014 22:50

I also had few bites of cake yesterday, due to not having enough to eat snd very little sleep previous night.
we went to the pub today and I got nive gammon steak+egg+1 tomato+ some salad and that filled me until 8 PM when I had a chance to eat something at home. I had some roast beef and mayo. I feel full and content.

I am on call this weekend but I don't tend to eat even if I am being woken up t night by my phone to work.

I am good at drinking 3 l of water a day. I think I don't need redydrating electrolytes any more but have one sachet in my bag just in case.

Emotional eating is usually response to stress for me. I noticed what with this woe I am not reaching out to food when stressed.
I have no idea what changed in my metabolism but this is a major WIN for me.

I am stressed at work but didn't feel like snacking because of that. Just feel that my upper back muscles are tight Sad.
Fingers crossed for few calls in the middle of the night so I can get some decent sleep one night this long weekend.

lookingforhope · 24/05/2014 00:04

hi all, just been catching up. Working long hours so have to be terribly organised to eat properly - ended up working through till 10 tonight then too late for dinner so had some chicken wings then some greek yoghurt and ate 6 strawberries - first fruit in almost 3 weeks!

Not weighed since Monday. Feel a bit better but not sure if I am losing

Doing the 30 day shred though - on day 3 so far. How are you doing stuntnun?

Thanks - Hissy - hope your darling boy is having a good day today and that you get to go home soon xxx

Two hour workout class tomorrow morning - get in!!! Got to go to sleep so I can face it!

Does anyone have any views on protein shakes for when you don't have time for breakfast? Have resisted so far but would like to use them occasionally - unless you all advise me not to Grin

ForeskinHyena · 24/05/2014 00:28

It's strange that the carby 'treats' don't taste as good as you imagine isn't it? I had a bite of a chocolate Viennese biscuit that the DCs had left on the table. I actually spat it out as I realised that the taste wasn't worth it. Sadly the same didn't happen with the Krispy Kreme

spamm · 24/05/2014 05:26

Just back from a night out and we first went to this great outdoor bar, where they had a whole garden full of sand and chairs and old boats. Plenty of beer, but no water, so I had a diet coke, which was horribly sweet and syrupy. Bleurgh!

Then for dinner I had a lamb chop with cucumber salad, spinach and courgette chips. Not bad! And lots of water.

I am planning to wake my son up in a couple of hours, to go out and watch the meteor shower, but I will probably fall asleep and miss it. And I have a work conference call tomorrow at 8am. Uuuurghhh.

Good night, Bootcamp friends.

readyforno2 · 24/05/2014 06:39

Just a quickie.. What's the view on lemsips? I'm guessing probably not but wanted to check

StuntNun · 24/05/2014 06:55

Lookingforhope you'll need to check the carb count on the protein shake as some are over 20g carbs. You can get Atkins ones which are low carb. Personally I wouldn't use them except for post-workout recovery as it's easy to get a quick breakfast: a scrambled eggs, Greek yoghurt or you can make things and keep them in the fridge such as boiled eggs or breakfast muffins. On the shred front I was on day 32 but I've hurt my back somehow so I'm having to take a break. Hmm

Ready lemsips have sugar and/or artificial sweetener so they aren't great. Can you just take paracetamol instead?

glenthebattleostrich · 24/05/2014 06:56

Morning everyone

Better day yesterday. Greek yogurt for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch, sausages mushrooms and toms for tea. Managed 3 litres of water and 3 cups of herbal tea and 3 teas with cream too.

This morning I'm having hallomi with tomato and spinach for breakfast with a cup of tea and a litre of water. Not sure about lunch or dinner yet. We are off shopping this morning.

readyforno2 · 24/05/2014 06:59

I have had some anadin. My throats really sore so wanted something to soothe it - any ideas? Normally I would have hot ribena or something.
I kinda knew that would be the answer but it's easier to convince myself not to have one now someone has told me not to

antimatter · 24/05/2014 07:50

readyforno2 during first 48 hours you can gargle on water + salt (can't remember how much, but salt is desinfectant, maybe 1 tsp/glas)
anytime - you can fargle on dissolved aspirine (1 tablet for 1/2 glass)
however sore throat may be also due to hay fever and I am not sure if above would help at all

Stiil waiting for the whoosh fairy here - 10 days now without any loss...going slowly up the wall being stuck between clothes sizes. I'm sure another couple of pounds will make all the difference to how my clothes will fit.

Could it be the awfully posh pork scratchings? I've had a few packs of these as snacks this week.

Can't think of anything else - I have tea twice a day with a little milk and a little cheese in a meal about twice a week.

I don't eat cream or yoghurt and I am drinking lots of water.

So demoralising when you arent seeing any results :( and I have lots more weight to lose so it's particularly annoying when I know I have a long way to go

alleypalley · 24/05/2014 08:30

I'm feeling the same as you today Pingu. Thought I'd have a sneaky weigh in before the weekend and I've stayed the same again. I thought I'd been pretty good this week too. I even have an open bottle of wine in the fridge that has been open for 3 days. That used to be unheard of in my house where moderation was not opening a second bottle.

I'll try my best to wait patiently for the whoosh fairy.

Best1sWest · 24/05/2014 08:54

Pingu I am feeling the same this morning. According to the scales I have lost 2 lbs since starting bootcamp. On Thursday the scales showed 5 lbs off and I was ecstatic, but the next day they were back.

I am sticking pretty rigidly to the rules but I have a lot of weight to lose and it is making me feel a bit down about it all.

JimmyCorkhill · 24/05/2014 08:58

Gave blood on Thursday and was told my iron levels were great! I'm putting it down to all the green veg I've been eating.

Lowcarbforthewin get off Facebook! Seriously, it is depressing and bad for your self esteem. I used to get really deflated and down comparing my life to everyone else's. I don't miss it at all. Reading your post made me think of you in a transition stage, like a caterpillar in a chrysalis. You will be a butterfly soon Wink

JimmyCorkhill · 24/05/2014 09:02

Best1sWest you can't put 5lbs on in a day unless you were in a pie eating contest! I read somewhere that to put on 1lb you have to have overeaten by 3500 cals. I cannot believe that you overate by 17,500cals!!! And in one day!!! It will be water retention or some such thing.

StuntNun · 24/05/2014 09:26

Pingu and Alley it's the nature of the beast I'm afraid. A low carb stall is where you haven't lost weight for four weeks so don't worry too much about ten days or a couple of weeks. Nuts and pork scratchings can add up to a lot of calories very fast. I opened a bag of macadamia nuts yesterday - the whole 100g bag is 750 calories so DH and I split a third of a bag between us for a snack. I sometimes log my food on My Fitness Pal to get an idea of the calories but this isn't something you need to do routinely, just if you're worried that you're massively overeating.

pingufan · 24/05/2014 10:02

Thanks, I'll cut out the scratchings for a while then - shame as it was a little something in the evenings I looked forward to. :(

Onwards and downwards....

Best1sWest · 24/05/2014 10:33

No, sorry it was the 3.5 lbs I thought I had lost on top of the 1.5 from last week that went back on. Perils of weighing every day I suppose. Or dodgy scales.

SayraT · 24/05/2014 10:38

I can't remember who it was but someone was looking for the spreadsheet.

Here it is Just add your name at the bottom and fill in your start weight and weigh-ins

Notso · 24/05/2014 12:01

My scales are rubbish, I just realised I weigh nearly a stone less in the middle of them than I do on the edge Hmm
I think I am going to bin them and not replace them. I feel like I have lost weight, clothes fit better, my tummy is a bit flatter too.
