Week 8 - Low Carb Bootcamp - Last Three Weeks!

I'm starting next week's thread a bit early as I have to be up and out of the house at sparrow's crack tomorrow.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And don't forget the weight tracker

It may seem like we're nearly at the end, but still the chance to lose up to another half a stone, if you can lose 2lbs a week!

Hope everyone has a good week. Mine is a bit of a minefield - out tomorrow night to celebrate both of my DCs' birthdays, and then out on Thursday with some MNetter friends, and I don't think we will be drinking sparkling water!

Good luck everyone. Flowers

Just a quick check in - had a gorgeous meal out last night with friends and DH - the other 3 had 3 courses, I was quite happy, and full, with my pork three ways and coffee while desserts were tucked into. I did as has been suggested on this thread, checked the menu beforehand and had decided in advance.

My afternoon tea treats are ready, just a quick house tidy now and to exercise the same... not restraint, more like discipline, and remembering what this is worth to me.

I weigh in on a Sunday and am 1.5lb down this week, after gaining 0.5 last week - it seems to go like this, fluctuating around and then a little whoosh, so I'm happy with this week :)

Waves to everyone else - trash given the stress you've been under it's not a desirable way to have a big whoosh, but I'm so glad that it's happened for you.
And feel for Suzy and Twit when others seem to get the opposite response from behaviour you have to avoid, it does feel so unfair. Definitely need really positive self-talk to get through that stuff too.
Athelstane one thing at a time!!! Manage the stressful move, and then you'll have the headspace for changing WOE again - please be kind to yourself, and Calamity well done!! sorry just missed your post yesterday.
Kefy that sounds a sensible person to be seeing - they'll know far more about your specific condition. I hope you get answers that make sense and get to decisions that you are happy with.

Suzymoo9 · 09/03/2014 13:43

Thanks BIWI I will - the food is lovely - even my mum is eating this way now and her pains are diminishing Thanks

Suzymoo9 · 09/03/2014 13:45

and little md Flowers

CalamityKate · 09/03/2014 15:42

Ooh I keep meaning to ask - I've noticed that my tongue is much cleaner lately!

Before, I often had a coated tongue. Not any more. Anyone else noticed the same?

EverythingIsAwesome · 09/03/2014 16:36

Having this with slow cooked gammon tonight, cannot wait! I totally forgot how amazing the food on this woe is.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 09/03/2014 16:54

Oh my word Everything that cheesey leek thing looks amazing! May have to change my plans for cauliflower cheese with our roast chicken tonight!

Dinner party very successful, everyone (including a 2 year old) loved the beef and celeriac dauphinoise. Had a couple of red wines and a little bit of pavlova, but it hasn't seemed to cause and more cravings. Beautiful walk on the beach this afternoon, and my 'honeymoon' jeans are feeling loose! All good things.

BIWI · 09/03/2014 17:02

The tongue thing is likely to be down to the lack of sugar - plaque formation is caused by the reaction of the saliva/bacteria with carbohydrate, I believe. Another reason why this WOE is good for us!

OP posts:
BIWI · 09/03/2014 17:05

"Plaque formation is initiated by a weak attachment of the bacterial cells to salivary glycoproteins forming a coat on the surface of the teeth. Teeth are normally negatively charged and plaque is positively charged. Opposite charges attract and bond to each other. This is followed by a stronger attachment by means of sticky polymers of glucose, which are produced by the bacteria from dietary sugars. As plaque matures, a thick layer is formed and harbor different types of microorganisms. Plaque, which is few hours old, is much less harmful than plaque, which is few days old. If plaque is not removed, it calcifies into tartar (calculus). Once calculus is formed, it cannot be removed by brushing and requires professional removal.

^The sudden increase in tooth decay is due to changes in diet like introduction of refined sugar. Foods that break down into simple sugars in the mouth are called fermentable carbohydrates. In the presence of sugar and fermentable carbohydrates, bacteria in the mouth produce acids, which can demineralize tooth struture. The more frequently teeth are exposed to this environment, the more likely dental caries are to occur.
As the amount of bacterial plaque increases, the tooth is more vulnerable to dental caries Thus for the healthy teeth, the frequency of sugar intake is more important than the quantity of sugar consumption. Therefore, minimizing snacking is recommended, since snacking creates a continual supply of nutrition for acid-creating bacteria in the mouth.^"

Ooh! Another plus!

EverythingIsAwesome · 09/03/2014 17:19

Heir the cheesy leek thing is fantastic, we just had it and the kids wolfed it down :)

monkeyfacegrace · 09/03/2014 18:21

Ive just had my third ground lineseed pizza in three days Blush

Im obessed. Its almost as good as bread.

Now I thought leeks were high carb, but is that Jamie Oliver recipe ok? Looks amazing.

Im still bouncing around the 153-155lb mark. Struggling to drop below 153lb, but Ive been doing this long enough to realise it will happen. Started at 175lb so still doing okish.

Finding the water easy peasy, am easily drinking 5l a day and maybe another 1l of pepsi max but dont tell BIWI

EverythingIsAwesome · 09/03/2014 18:38

Oh dear, are leeks a no-no? I used to eat loads of them last time I BC'd Blush

thenightsky · 09/03/2014 18:42

Disastrous weekend. Dreading tomorrow's weigh in. Friday was good. Saturday was going well, till I chowed down a huge piece of millionaire's shortbread and half a pack of custard creams. today was ok till i ate toast which came with my scrambled egg at the garden centre breakfast. Then I ate a flapjack which I found in the glove compartment as I drove home from said garden centre Sad

In my defence I've had an emotional weekend (relationship issues)

HeirToTheIronThrone · 09/03/2014 18:46

Everything DH is insisting on cauliflower, the goon. Leeks shall have to wait until another day

EverythingIsAwesome · 09/03/2014 18:55

:( for both Heir and thenightsky

Suzymoo9 · 09/03/2014 19:05

According to the veg carb counter on spreadsheet, leeks are 2.9 so that seems fine.

BIWI · 09/03/2014 19:11

Sorry to hear that, thenightsky. Why don't you leave weighing till later in the week? Drink lots of water and get back on the wagon asap.

I've had two pints of cider and it's only 1900. Crap.

CrabbySpringyBottom · 09/03/2014 19:20

Hello lovely fabulous Bootcampers!

LMiss and Pisci thanks for that. LMiss they are mostly clean pink new skin/scars now, but there are still little areas of scabs because DD is a compulsive picker just like me and wont let them heal completely. There's no inflammation or infection there though. They gave her this oil to apply at least twice daily. If she doesn't, the scarred areas go a bit scaly/flaky on the top. She's got quite a few scars already as she does pick everything but obviously these are significantly larger and more noticeable. I'm sure they'll fade eventually though.

Whoosh at least your gelly [sic] breasts didn't inflate like a pillow during the jaccuzi - now that would have taken some explaining. Wink

Notso I have really enjoyed having her back it's just the constant interaction that I'd got out of the habit of! It's because she's at home all the time too and I'm a person who needs quite a lot of personal space. Thank god for her Minecraft addiction. Wink

Kefy I hear you about the cholesterol worries. Mine was a shade under 8 in the autumn (up from around 7 a couple of years before) and it did put the wind up me. Luckily my GP was very reassuring and positive about the low carbing and my overall risk (low). As you have familial hypercholesterolaemia, is it possible for them to do more specific tests which look at the density of your LDL? That seems to be quite pertinent to your cardiovascular risk, from what I've read.

Sybil hope you're feeling better.

Yay Kate on your under 11 stone milestone! Flowers

LMiss Flowers for you for resisting the pressure from big pharma. I wish more doctors would/could (although I think many are very principled). As an incidental aside, I once (years ago) met Ben Goldacre at a party and he was a bit of a boorish egotist. There was a lot of coke circulating at that party so that may have been the reason, I don't know. I was most disappointed, having enjoyed his columns.

Great post from Thumb on statins and research. Hope your rodenty-electrical issue gets sorted.

Trashy great news about your DS and the gateway housing. I hope your furniture revolution is everything you hope for. I want to see all the pictures!

Lighthouse might be worth having a word with the GP? All kudos to you for going to Camden at all... I think that I'm now so old that they'd turn me back at the tube station exit. Wink
That's reminded me of something. Long ago when I lived in Highbury and wasn't yet 30, I dyed my hair red on a whim. It was supposed to be a deep chestnutty vibrant sort of red, but came out a vivid scarlet. I sort of convinced myself that it was ok, then went into the local shop where my fucking gorgeous Afghani friend worked. He did a double take and said 'wow... your hair...' I said 'it's a bit brighter than I expected... what do you think?'. He replied 'you look like you live in Camden.'

I dyed it back. Grin

CrabbySpringyBottom · 09/03/2014 19:33

Thumb I just looked at your photos to see the CoQ10 pathway and scrolled down. Oh my your DC are gorgeous! Love the mad hairstyle one, and mine has the feminine version of your youngest's name. Normally I wouldn't say this but recently left her name in a C&Pd post so what the hell.

I have a confession to make, my wonderful low carb lovelies. I'm not sure I'm going to quite carry on with this for the rest of bootcamp. I've still got half a stone left to go but I'm at that stage when I look pretty good in my clothes and can fit into most (not all) of them. I'm finding sticking to it really challenging this time and I think I'm going to do low GI for a while and see how I go. I've been drinking too much and eating too many carbs on my off-piste moments, so it's no wonder that I've not lost anything much this bootcamp. I totally think that this WOE is the way to go for weightloss and I also think that it's a healthy WOE, although I think that I've been relying too much on meat and cheese lately. I've just lost my low carb mojo a bit.

I'll still be here reading and posting though, because I think this shit really works Wink and I love you all! Mwah mwah xx

EverythingIsAwesome · 09/03/2014 19:37

Are pickled gherkins ok to snack on?

EvaTheOptimist · 09/03/2014 19:59

I forgot to say yesterday Athelstane good luck with the house-move, hope it all goes OK.

Lighthouse really bad luck with the period. Did you already go to the docs, I can't remember.

Crabby we don't care what you eat, you have to stay around for the chat, your recipes and your super replies!

I feel like I'm getting mentally more comfortable with the idea of "what next" in terms of maintaining after bootcamp. I think it will be much like this WOE but with a more relaxed attitude to Occasional carbs (for example, toast, but not every day by any means). I will also aim to stay below 11 stone, hitting that would be the sign to go back to bootcamp rules for a while. Hopefully this plan will work! I do feel healthy at the moment, and in a good relationship with food - ie enjoying my meals, not feeling hungry, not thinking obsessively about or craving food between meals, plenty of energy.

stayanotherday · 09/03/2014 21:12

What an interesting thread!

BIWI · 09/03/2014 21:23

Crabby (I almost typed carbby there - Freudian or what?!) you know what works/doesn't work for you. Just don't use it as an excuse to eat/drink whatever you want.

Trust me, I've been there, got the t-shirt Grin

But good luck, and don't abandon us. If for nothing else other than your fabulous recipes!

Crabby, am I right in thinking (from a very quick research) that there are a lot of similarities in the theory behind the bootcamp and the low GI diet? This sounds attractive to me as I have bought into a lot of the bootcamp theory I have read in the past few weeks. Low GI would help me eat more low fat. What kind of resources would you recommend?
I already feel bloated and worried about putting weight on after 2 days off bootcamp. Sad
