Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Where we stand at the crossroads ...

BIWI · 27/01/2014 07:31

Morning everyone.

So, we enter the fabled week 3.

This week you have a choice. You can either continue with Bootcamp or you can move on to Bootcamp Light:

Rules of Bootcamp Light

Or you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Totally up to you and what you find is working for you the most.

Don't forget to enter your weight on the weight tracker - today you should see your graph appear! Or if you prefer, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And now - a word of warning!

It is very, very, very common for weight loss to slow down/stop altogether in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5. This seems to be entirely normal. It's probably to do with your body adjusting to low carbing. You will have junked the glycogen stores and a load of water, and will now be burning fat. From here on, weight loss will - and should be - around 1-2lbs a week

Good luck everyone!

But it wont put me out of ketosis?!
I presume neither would those few biccies, and the spoon of ice cream?
Not fussed if I have a slower loss this week, but terrifiedof coming out of ketosis and actually gaining fat.

WillieWaggledagger · 31/01/2014 19:24

monkeyfacegrace, they might take you out of ketosis, but not dramatically

if you do put on a lb or so it will be replenished glycogen stores, not fat. do a couple of strict, alcohol-free days and plenty of water and you will be back in ketosis. as you have been LCing for a few weeks you will likely go back into ketosis far more quickly than before

please don't be terrified, that way madness lies, life gets in the way sometimes.

Wondering if anyone has ever attempted custard with no sugar? I have lots of eggs from the chickens and I used to make custard for dessert sometimes to use the eggs up. I was going to try sugarless custard tonight but thought I'd see if anyone had any done it before.

B: coffee with cream
L: Chicken leg and wing with little gem lettuce
D: Chicken satay

Didn't intend on having so much chicken but my OH made the dinner tonight before I came in, the satay was yummy.

thenightsky · 31/01/2014 19:42

Frozen raspberries, half defrosted in the microwave, then added to double cream, let them stand a while so the cream sort of thickens with the cold from the berries. Eat and enjoy!

GermanGirlinLDN · 31/01/2014 19:45

I am feeling great. Week 3 has been a huge success for me so far. I have personal training sessions at the gym and Friday is my weigh-in. Last week I actually weighed more than the week before and my trainer was a bit cross with me. I weighed in at 78.8kg (173.3lbs) and today I was 74.5kg (164.2lbs). I couldn't believe it and neither could my personal trainer. I have lost nearly 5lbs since the Monday weigh-in. I know I know it's not all fat but still. Last week I only lost 1lbs despite my best efforts food and exercise wise. A jeans that I could hardly pull up after New Year is now sitting loose. I am dreaming off the 6x.xx on the scales and if things go as well in February as they do at the moment my dream might come true in March.

Drinking a lot of water is really SO important. The first two weeks I could only manage to drink 2l maybe 2.5 and this week I a drinking at least 4l a day and the weight comes off. I am also less afraid of salt now. I haven't been previously BUT I was told it was a common reason for weight loss stops so I stopped my salt consumption.

I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. TGIF

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 31/01/2014 20:15

Evening everyone; hope that you've all has a good day and that those going to carby twat lane enjoy it!

I'm going to be very dull and list my intake as I think it helps me; sorry for the boredom. After my moan last night I'm going to add my fluids too - I just need to eliminate any form of forgetting in order to keep up I think.

B; yogurt and mascapone, a few berries and a few almonds
L: 2 egg scrambled in butter with a shallot, some mushrooms and some cherry tomatoes and a tbsp gruyere. Salad with olive oil.
S: flax bread and butter and 5 pork scratchings (messed up the dinner timings)
D: coconut pork off the recipe thread with courgetti in butter.

Fluids:
3 pints water
1 500ml instant coffee with splash of cream
2x750ml water
2x mugs fruit tea
2x500ml peppermint tea
1x500ml decaf with a splash of cream
2x 500ml peppermint tea.
Total: 6,100ml (if I can count). I have only wee'd four times today. Possibly 5. Officially a freak.

[off to test wee for sugar as per Crabby - worth thinking about looking at that lot]

GatoradeMeBitch · 31/01/2014 20:20

I had fried halloumi (squeaky cheese heaven!) with salad for lunch, and I just had salmon for dinner, with crunchy kale chips on the side. Nice!

Can I ask - what happens once the eight weeks are up? I know I will need far longer than eight weeks to deal with my weight. Do some of us carry on in a separate thread until we reach goal weights, or do we move onto a different diet phase after bootcamp?

LittleMissDisorganized · 31/01/2014 20:26

Thanks Pisci and others. I put my 3+ stone on since my accident 18 months ago and so it's stretched rather quickly!

Sarah you need a fasting blood sugar, urine glucose neither rules out or confirms diabetes.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 31/01/2014 20:41

Little Miss - I don't, I need an HbA1C, but given that I haven't got a path lab in my kitchen and I do have dipsticks… Grin

In all seriousness, I'm fairly sure that I'm not diabetic - I may have good going polydipsia but I don't have polyuria - the opposite if anything. I also spent a few days doing 4x daily fingerprick glucose a while back after worrying in pregnancy and it was fine. I also did a GTT.

But that aside, I do have a strong family history of type 2 diabetes - a very good reason to stick with this way of eating.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 31/01/2014 20:55

I came on to suggest what thenightsky has already done for the frozen berry peeps - only I don't defrost at all, just a handful in a bowl then a glug of cream over, leave for a few mins then mush up together - almost like ice cream!

I'm home alone too so just made myself left over swede mash fried up with butter and lardons. And a fried egg on top. Oh my it looked utterly disgusting but was delicious. I have wine but don't fancy it either (what???) so it's me and a pint of water watching the hours of Dancing on Ice that DH vetoes when he's here

EvaTheOptimist · 31/01/2014 21:23

Well done Denman you're doing wonderfully.

Steeleye thanks that was a great article, I didn't understand it enough to explain it to any relatives (unfortunately) but it was a bit reassuring.

Germangirl what an astonishing loss, I'm glad it's going better for you now.

I'm off to read the New Scientist and other links now - thanks so much to all who've linked them, you are GREAT

EvaTheOptimist · 31/01/2014 21:37

In case anyone is still interested, according to one of the links I'm now reading, the low-carb twin didn't lose muscle, as the "bodpod" can't measure muscle loss, just measures fat loss and other loss eg water, glycogen

ElBombero · 31/01/2014 22:19

Don't suppose a little binge would help the week 3 stall? (Wishful thinking)

trashcanjunkie · 31/01/2014 23:47

We had a power cut! I have been cleaning by candle light which I am rather delighted with, cos I always have to clean on Saturdays after a week at work. The power is now back on but I learned two things. 1) I can link my phone to other devices - laptop/ipad and suck the wifi out of it!!! 2) I had trodden in a rogue dog turd and tramped it around my wooden (thank fuck) floors whilst cleaning when the power was off. I have now also cleaned the turd, and am soaking the sole of my sheepskin boot (offending turd vehicle)

On a different note, I'm also cooking two lots of bolognese sauce to make into two lots of lasagne. A carby twat one for one of the kids and our foreign student who leaves for Brazil tomorrow evening, and an aubergine mousakka-ie one for dp and me to feed on tomorrow and any night I can't be chowed to cook next week.

Hope everybody's feeling positive. I'm feeling the grind slightly, but am digging in for the long haul. A pp (sorry who?) asked about what next after the eight weeks. I AM TOTALLY IN THIS FOR THE LONG HAUL AND WOULD LOVE TO KEEP BEING SUPPORTED WITH A THREAD And I'm sure this is possible/been done before Grin

Ok, now the mundane stuff

Todays food

B - titchy wank portion of greek yoghurt (I think - or was that yesterday?) leftover chicken and cheesy cauliflower thingy

S - Slice of egg/bacon/mushroom/courgette/garlic/cheese/cream frittata type affair

L - same as above but bigger slice. Cold from the fridge

D - Sirloin steak in butter/king prawns/baby spinach in cream/courgette chips/avocado/olives Blush fuck... is that too much? went down a storm with dp

also one square of 85% leiths school of fuckwits chocolate bar from asda - during the power cut panic obvs Hmm

4.5 litres aqua pura. Big ol cup of peppermint tea

and breathe
right, off to check bolog sauce and have a piss

Piscivorus · 01/02/2014 00:27

LittleMiss As you have not been as overweight for as long your stomach will snap back where I will have a monstrous gunt!

Sarah I have had polydipsia without polyuria for many years. I joke with colleagues that this means I am actually 8stone with serious fluid retention. If you could see the size of me you would understand how ludicrously funny that is!

Piscivorus · 01/02/2014 00:28

BTW That gunt illustration pic is not really me!

Lovecat · 01/02/2014 01:08

Blee to the gunt!

Just checking in, I have spent the last 2 days being cultured and that (Coriolanus via NT Live at the cinema and a concert performance of Rent tonight - I love that musical so much!) and while I've tried to be good, tonight carbs found me in the shape of a Rent-themed cocktail called La Vie Boheme, which contained rum, grenadine and orange juice. It was bloody lovely but went straight to my head and I now have a raging thirst that I'm trying to assuage before bedtime.

Today was another day of not really feeling hungry - I tried that tip of pate on a slice of turnip - what a revelation! and had some left-over pork, but otherwise nothing til tonight, which was chicken stuffed with boursin wrapped in bacon, on a bed of broccoli. I really need to drink more water...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/02/2014 07:31

As always, trying to catch up with you all! Morning Brew

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 01/02/2014 07:33

piscivorous I had to look up what a gunt was, I'm such an innocent!

I've woken up with a mouth like a badger's arse again and not really needing a wee. [ confused]

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 01/02/2014 07:35

lovecat that sounds like a lovely evening

PrimalLass · 01/02/2014 08:23

I love this thread. I am a bit damaged by that gunt photo though.

I am a bit gutted to be only 4lb down, but it feels like "real" weight loss IYSWIM.

Going out tonight, for cocktails (Hendricks and s/t for me then) and dinner. Hopefully I'll be able to choose something bootcamp-friendly. It's a BYOB place, so I'll take a bottle of red instead of my usual white.

JakeBullet · 01/02/2014 08:38

Are nut milks okay......only I discovered unsweetened almond milk makes the most delicious "milky" coffee. It tastes like luxury.....

arselikekylie · 01/02/2014 08:40

Have just Googled gunt Shock

Must delete my history!

JakeBullet · 01/02/2014 08:42

I have lost 13.5lbs so far Smile....am weighing again on Tuesday.....at Slimming World......they don't know I am ignoring a lot of their rules regarding cutting the fat off meat.....and so far I am losing. Crispy bacon fat...mmmmm! Grin I am going purely for the weigh in and the company of others......some of whom are amazing....one man has shed 17 stones!

I am also now seeing a counsellor about the emotional eating side of things which I feel I need to do. My emotional eating started in childhood as I had a very difficult time then. Obviously the eating is very under control at the moment but there is no harm in exploring the issue to help me continue along the path.

StuntNun · 01/02/2014 08:51

Primal afaik red and white wines are pretty similar for carb counts. It was a mistake by Dr Atkins who assumed that white wines had more carbs because they taste sweeter.
