Week 1 - New Year 2014 Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

Morning all!

I see several of you have already weighed in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

As of today, though, we also have our bright, shiny, new Bootcamp section on Mumsnet, including our own Weight Tracker, which will only show your own weight/progress.

You can either use the Spreadsheet as we have done before, which everyone has access to and can see, or you can go here and enter your weight.

Obviously you can do both!

When you're in the new Bootcamp, if you click on the tab that says 'more info' that will take you to a section which has loads of information about low carbing, as well as Bootcamp Rules

Before we get going formally, I have to make an important disclaimer:

I am not a doctor, a medic, a scientist, a nutritionist or a dietician. I have no formal training in food, dieting or low carbing. The information that I provide here is based solely on my reading on the subject, as well as my own experience. If you have any kind of medical condition and/or you are taking any kind of ongoing medication, you should consult your GP before starting a low carb diet

That done, good luck everyone!

Sorry to those of you going through the wars physically - Jax that sounds awful; there's something horribly discombobulating about having a fall let alone coming away with a proper injury too.

Crabby - glad you're on the mend.

ChesterDrawers · 19/01/2014 08:17

Morning all,

Yesterday was good but did share a bottle of wine with DH. Have been on BC for almost three weeks though so hoping I've not done too much damage. Food was:

B: total and cream
L: eggs, bacon, mushrooms
D: feta, blue cheese, ham and shroom omelette

At a birthday party today so just had a huge breakfast of sausage, bacon x 2, mushrooms fried in butter and bacon fat, left over omelette and a decaf with cream. Hopefully that lot should help me steer clear of the carbs later on

Mlig · 19/01/2014 08:44

Morning!

I've been on bck for a week today, so I got weighed this morning and ive put 2lb on since yesterday after losing nothing yesterday, so that's just a 5lb loss. I know I shouldn't be disappointed I am :-(
Although I got weighed on Monday too for my weight in the ss so I'm hoping today's just a blip as my week hasn't been great and I've had hardly any sleep. Still, the hubby keeps telling me how proud of me he is, I've done loads of diets and I've never stuck to anything like I have this, I've been 100% perfect despite being the biggest carb addict in the world!
I am struggling to fit all my water in though, according to the chart I need 4-4.5litres and I'm generally managing 2-3

Mlig - it's so hard not to feel despondent isn't it, even though 5lb in a week is amazing (and you know that too Wink )?

Every time you reach a low you don't ever want to see that number go up again. I wonder if your lack of sleep isn't helping though, I have read quite a lot that suggests that bad sleep inhibits weight loss.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 19/01/2014 08:59

Oh, poor smashed head Jax Sad. Hope it's feeling a bit better.

I foolishly made a job lot of cauliflower cheese with bacon, mushrooms and leeks mixed in. Foolishly, because now I have to eat it all before it goes funny, and I am now on day three of cauliflower cheese with bacon, mushrooms and leeks mixed in.

Morning All. I weighed in on Monday morning, had a good first day, then heard the word all teachers dread....... Ofsted.

Spiralled in an emotional carby hellhole.HmmHmm

I'm going to read the thread later and catch up, start properly tomorrow for week two.

Well done on some fantastic losses so far! Smile

CrabbyWinterBottom · 19/01/2014 09:20

Thanks Helium. Smile

Grin Athel couldn't you freeze a portion?

FourArms · 19/01/2014 09:28

ImATotJeSuisUneTot - hope it went well? I took in about 10 x 4 packs of chocolate bars when we were inspected and told my colleagues in the dept to help themselves. There were 5 of us, but only 4 in on any 1 day. They were all gone in 2 days along with a 2kg box of biscuits!

Jax - hope you feel better soon :)

I'm 0.4lb down today which means I've now lost 3 stone low carbing since September (29/8). I also fitted into some size 14 trousers too this week so I'm very happy with this plan :)

Southsearocks · 19/01/2014 09:43

Morning. I'm feeling like crap Confused. Went out for DPs birthday full of good intentions. Had a glass of prosecco before we left and drank a few glasses of red. I had lamb with celeriac mash which was mostly potato I think and a blackberry sauce but I did pinch two bits of bread and had three small spoons of waffle and ice cream!

Anyhow, I didn't sleep well at all and I've been getting pins and needles in my hands and feet. I feel like I've got flu this morning - all dizzy and no energy at all. I realise it could be the alcohol but I'm sure this is more than a hangover. Could it be a reaction to carbs?

LauraBridges · 19/01/2014 09:46

The UK's new Action on Sugar body www.actiononsugar.org/ reports today see Sunday Times front page that our Government's chair of the panel examining sugar and health in the UK (and will report later this year as to what level of sugar in the diet is healthy, framing national guidance on this) provides monthly advice to Mars at board level and has advised Coca Cola for fees.

That does not sound like a good start for developing a new food pyramid in the UK with less or no sugar and much less carb.

Also people might like to watch Channel 4 tomorrow 20 January - Dispatches on the topic - www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches

My DP has come out with a great catchphrase when I'm upset at not losing weight as fast as I want - "The Trend is Your Friend", as long as weight is being lost overall, it doesn't matter if some days you stay the same - or even put a pound or 2 on!!
I'll be muttering "The Trend is My Friend" all day, today.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2014 10:11

Morning Losers :)

The trend is your friend is fabulous as a saying! I can see me using it a lot.

All is good here, lamb shanks in the slow cooker, will have to avoid the red wine gravy and mash but will have some veggies, so all is well.

Lovecat · 19/01/2014 10:11

Oww, Jax! :( Hope you're okay.

Glad you're feeling a bit better Crabby (autocorrect wanted to type Carby then!).

Well, I didn't go to the aftershow party after all, because ten minutes before the curtain call I got a stonking migraine - visual disturbances (left eye basically a discoball), nausea, the lot - so I went home and fell into bed. My migraines are generally post-stress ones so I think it was my body flicking me the v's and saying 'enough!' tbh. I woke with a very itchy chest but I think that's more to do with incomplete removal of glitter from my cleavage last night than any lc-ing symptoms...

Yesterday wasn't great on the vegetable front, but I managed to largely steer away from carbs:

B - Total with a splash of double cream & vanilla extract
L - the remainder of Friday's Malaysian curry, just the curry, nothing else
D - Kleftico in the local caff - I asked them if I could swap the potatoes and rice it normally comes with for salad, they very kindly did this but their 'salad' was 2 leaves of lettuce, 1 slice of cucumber, 1 slice of tomato and sweetcorn (bleugh) with a MOUND of coleslaw with a dressing that tasted so sweet I knew it had to be bad. So basically I had my tiny bits of salad and a big gorgeous tender lamb shank, meat falling off the bone. And I ate all the fat on it and it was LUSH :o

Didn't do too well on the water front, managed about a litre - it was absolutely freezing yesterday and having to hang around a draughty church hall with the back doors open (so we could get from one side of the stage to another) in a belly-dancing outfit meant that I was mainlining black coffee to keep warm!

Feeling a lot better this morning, but very dry. I have no real plan for today past a brunchy fry-up 'first' thing, as I am making a Mario Bros birthday cake for a friend's son and decorating it will probably take all day... I have a Hairy Bikers recipe for a low-fat (!!) version of cassoulet which can do in the slow cooker and sounds a lot nicer than trad. cassoulet, so I am considering making that and decarbing/upping the fat in it (ie not skinning the chicken, using LC sausages etc, frying the meat first in butter, no beans and substituting swede or celeriac for spuds).

HumphreyCobbler · 19/01/2014 10:11

Crabby thanks so much for the info re coldsores. I would be v interested in that article if you could spare the time.

Today I woke up to my period. I am feeding a three month old baby ffs. Seriously annoyed by this. But it does explain my unusual level of starvation, it wasn't the lack of dairy after all. I always get a massive hormonal hunger, this is prob why I gain so much weight when pg.

DurhamDurham · 19/01/2014 10:14

" With you in mind, because I know you are low carbing, I've made beef stroganoff with wedges and rice"

Not sure my mum has the hang of this yet Smile

I ate the stroganoff and tried to avoid the rice but I'm sure a few grains got in. The wedges were easy to avoid as they were the size of small bananas.

toomuchicecream · 19/01/2014 10:17

Yesterday:
B = Chipolatas
L = left over chicken breast stuffed with Boursin wrapped in bacon, served with kale fried in Chipolata and chicken fat, sprinkled with Chinese 5 spice
D = pork medallions and mushrooms in cream sauce with celeriac mash and sprouts fried with bacon.

Had a pre-dinner snack/starter (cos DH cooks beautifully but ways serves it least 2 hours took the for me)of a whole baked Camembert with celery & cucumber (shared it with DH)

Yum yum yum!!

StuntNun · 19/01/2014 10:18

My rule for weight loss is that any decrease is an absolute loss of weight, but any increase is a temporary fluctuation caused by water retention or hormones. It may not be strictly true but it keeps me on the straight and narrow.

teaandthorazine · 19/01/2014 10:24

Jax - hope you're feeling better, falling is awful. I had a proper face-meets-pavement fall once, years ago, and it still makes me shiver when I think about it. Many sympathies.

lovecat hope you're feeling better too! Sorry but I did Grin at cleavage-glitter!

I did weigh this morning and the scales appear to have not moved. However, I'm going to take my own advice and remember that my stomach is flatter, my skin is clearer, I feel brighter and more energetic and my indigestion has even disappeared. I don't have that much to lose (would be very happy with a stone) and haven't been drinking enough water, so I'm going to rectify that and see how things are next week.

Suzymoo9 · 19/01/2014 10:33

BIWI · 19/01/2014 10:49

Food was good (in the sense that it was all low carb - hopefully it was tasty too!), but way too much wine was had.

Hugs to everyone with sore heads either accidentally or self inflicted!

Good news, I've been! Bad news, I got weighed first how sad am I and was chuffed with my weightloss for the week but reweighed after a hefty deposit and stayed the same, wtff as DD would say.

Lamb shoulder in the slow cooker for tonight and going to make my breakfast muffins for work next week but I'll use pancetta as they were too dry and gaggy with sausages but that could've been due to the carb flu earlier in the week. DH says I've turned into a domestic goddess but he's pissed off that the dishwasher is on so much due to all the pans/dishes used I resisted the urge to mention his daily bath habit and how much water they use when the rest of us get showers

BTW not impressed with this waking early lark, I've been up since 8 and I've only got the ironing left to do. I'd usually meet a friend at the pub if we've both got everything done but that means wine and food so don't know what to do for the rest of the day.
