Don’t have anyone to sign passport

I really want to take my children abroad but don’t have anyone to do their passports. Has anyone been in this situation and what did you do? (Don’t need any suggestions of who can sign it I’m aware and have looked through the list but don’t have anyone that can do it) is there anything else that can be done if you’ve been in this situation?

this is one of the most ridiculous threads I have ever read. Its not signing you need its someone to attest to knowing you fir 2 years (not your child for children's passports, its you they are attesting to having known for 2 years!).

If you literally know nobody, ask your GP to do it. And do it all online with the online photo code then you can just add the persons email in the online application and the passport office will autonatically email them and ask them to confirm they've known YOU for 2 years.

I've done this twice in the last month, its very straightforward.

I won’t be updating, I think I’ve been jumped on enough.

GPs can't sign this unless they coincidentally are a friend of the person applying for the passport.

sunbum · 23/03/2025 18:39

of course they will, for a fee.

If not social worker? person from benefits office? Your plumber? Housing Officer?

Ah well, better book a holiday in the UK then.

Yes I could do that but they need to know you for 2 years

I signed one for a student recently as a teacher. I had to put I'd only known her for 1 year and however many months and I presume it was all fine as she was off abroad not long after. I'll have to ask whether they did accept my counter signature or not!

But it can be a person of good standing in the community. It doesn't necessarily have to be any of the listed professions.

Like I said, my friend who's been a teaching assistant for less than 2 years, has signed ours.

Any position which requires a high level of trust and integrity basically.

HansHolbein · 23/03/2025 18:40

Fair enough 🤷‍♀️

GPs are not allowed to sign unless they know you personally so stop saying it's possible

How many times do I need to post the proof that GP won’t do it? I would happily pay if they would.

Why haven’t your kids been to any clubs, swimming lessons etc? Why can’t you approach a parent of a friend and say hello, start a conversation? They must recognise you as you don’t have a job, presumably you do the school run

OP

Have you explored the Post Office "Check and Send" service.

https://www.gov.uk/how-the-post-office-check-and-send-service-works

Can't guarantee that it covers your situation, though, but worth a look and even a visit to a PO that does it.

You've still got to have a countersignature. The post office will do or check your application, will take photos and sorts it all out. Making sure there's no mistakes. They don't sign photos.

GPs/drs can't anymore even for a fee unless they know you personally.

No they won’t any longer and even if they did (for a fee) the Passport Office won’t accept their signature if they state the only way they know the applicant is by virtue of the doctor/patient relationship.

The rules on this changed relatively recently so even if you have known this to happen in the past, it’s no longer an option.

Again GP won’t do it.

As you've apparently had time to point out multiple times but no time to explain why you have no contact with a single other adult with their own passport and a job. If you're being "jumped on" it's because you've chosen to ignore sensible and relevant questions whilst wittering on about it being impossible and generally deliberately winding people up.

LizzieVereker · 23/03/2025 18:42

In answer to your original question: No. There is no way to obtain your children’s passports with a countersignature. So no-one who’s been in a similar situation can suggest any alternative as there isn’t one.
If you contact the passport office they will just say that, or possibly start making lots of suggestions like people have here, and you don’t want. So your only option is to cultivate an adult relationship with someone who could be a countersignatory and maintain that for two years until they can sign.

HPFA · 23/03/2025 18:42

Have to say, having been through the process of getting an Irish passport, it's quite odd to see anyone finding the UK process difficult.

The list of people who can witness is limited to a small number of professions, they insist on a landline number, they almost always call, the witness is expected to be available immediately and isn't allowed to call back....

So you persuade your dentist to sign for you and they're then expected to stop in the middle of a root canal to be questioned by the authorities.

And that's not to mention different bits of the website will tell you different things.

UK seems a doddle in comparison.

CountryQueen · 23/03/2025 18:42

I can sign them. But I’m not psychic and nobody at school would know that I can unless they asked me!

As I said I’m not looking for who can do it there is no one I’ve thought for years how to do it I’m only asking if anyone has been in this situation and what alternatives there is

People are literally giving you the answer? So you have no teachers, doctors or post office workers in your life? No manager at work? Do you live in a vacuum?

Katrinawaves · 23/03/2025 18:46

How about your DWP work coach if you haven’t worked for 2 years?
