Dinner on the sofa most nights

Anyone else? Or is this a strange household habit we have.

My husband and I have been like this since we met 10+ years ago. To start with he lived in a flat without a dining table and then when we moved in it was a small unappealing thing and now we just have no excuse, we eat on the sofa 99% of the time.

We tried to make Sundays a table dinner at 5.00pm with our son but with illness and life we've not succeeded in that for some time.

How old is your son?

Violettaa · 17/02/2024 20:08

Us too! Breakfast and lunch are at the table with DDs (and they eat dinner at the table with one of us there). But adults’ dinner time is on the sofa with crap on the telly. After a day with a 1 and 4 yo there is no way I’m keeping things formal.

Bestdoanamechange · 17/02/2024 20:32

For the best part of 30 years as an adult, I sat at a table to eat. Moved into this house with DP and we now sit in front of the tv every night. I blame him for introducing me to box sets.

minipie · 17/02/2024 20:44

Same here on weeknights. No shame. It’s comfy.

BarrelOfOtters · 17/02/2024 20:48

in winter….Yep unless it’s something messy. Once a week we have family round for dinner and that’s at the table.

breakfast and lunch are at the table….

very occasionally we’ll have dinner and talk to each other. But usually telly after a long day.

In the summer much more likely to eat outside or at the table that has nice view of the garden.

PollyOrange · 17/02/2024 20:50

We rarely eat at the table as it seems to be my laundry storage 😩😩😩

mynameiscalypso · 17/02/2024 20:50

We used to in our previous flat. Now we live in a house where the sofa is on different floor to the kitchen so we eat at the dining table now. If it's just me, I still gravitate back to the sofa though.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 17/02/2024 20:53

Same, we eat in the dining room maybe once or twice a week.
Used to always be at the table when the children were younger but now everyone seems to be dashing off somewhere or eating at different times.
We do always try to get Sunday dinner together but life's busy.

noodlesfortea · 17/02/2024 20:58

Always on the sofa 🙈 we're moving soon and the kitchen diner will be much further from the sofa, so going to try and introduce better habits

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/02/2024 21:15

Yes we eat on our laps in front of the TV.

Used to eat at the table in the kitchen with DS when he was small and messy but now we always eat in the living room .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/02/2024 21:21

To add- DS is adult now and doesn't live with us, but when DS was around age 8-16, DH used to work shifts so wasn't around for normal meal times. DS and I used to eat together and we would always chat - often whatever we were watching would be a base for conversation or DS talked about his school, friends etc . We all went out together for our lunch on Sundays .

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 17/02/2024 21:22

Sit at the table every night. Sometimes eat a bowl of cereal on the sofa in the morning.

letstrythatagain · 17/02/2024 21:30

We sit at the table most of the time and always when the kids are here ( shared access with Dad). Every now and again when it's just the two of us we sit in front of the tv 😁.

FourChimneys · 17/02/2024 21:37

Breakfast is at the kitchen table.
Lunch is either at the kitchen table or in the dining room if we are at home. Dinner is at the dining table, properly laid with cutlery, glassware etc. It is kept clear for meals although I sometimes have to remind people it is not a storage unit.

Even when the DC were small we ate at a table unless it was an indoor picnic as a treat.

Always on the sofa on laps now it's just me and DH. When our kids were at home it was at the table always - TV off no messing. When the kids come over now it's always at the table too. I love to sit around the table with the family and chat over dinner. DH and I have just got a bit lazy I think!

Zonder · 17/02/2024 21:40

Always at the dinner table except the odd Saturday night if we have a take away. Have done since the kids were tiny.

Does he not make a massive mess?! About once a month we have a carpet picnic but other than in the summer when we eat outside all meals are at the dining room table. Snacks can be at the small table in the playroom.

Not sitting properly is bad for digestion. Not eating together and chatting as a family makes it’s much more difficult for children to learn basic social skills.

Matilda1981 · 17/02/2024 21:42

We pretty much always eat at the table - it’s a huge treat if the kids get to eat food in front of the tv!

We have a ‘no phones or devices’ rule at the table so everyone is sociable! Kids are 12,10,5 and 3 so it’s nice for us to all sit together

AlisonDonut · 17/02/2024 21:58

I never eat on the sofa, it feels wrong. Always at the table.

honeyfox · 17/02/2024 22:00

We only eat at the table when my dad is visiting, or for lunch, but have no kids to observe our bad behaviour!

Moonshine5 · 17/02/2024 22:02

Not here.
Snack on sofa tho.

Silverbirch7 · 17/02/2024 22:02

A table dinner? 🤯

piglet81 · 17/02/2024 22:03

No, we eat 99% of meals at the table. Call me old-fashioned but I think eating on the sofa is a bad habit (and messy).

Floralnomad · 17/02/2024 22:07

When our kids were children we always ate at the table but since they were teens it was trays on laps . Our kitchen table has been requisitioned as my laundry folding space and our dining table usually has a half done 1000 piece jigsaw on it .
