Dinner on the sofa most nights

Anyone else? Or is this a strange household habit we have.

My husband and I have been like this since we met 10+ years ago. To start with he lived in a flat without a dining table and then when we moved in it was a small unappealing thing and now we just have no excuse, we eat on the sofa 99% of the time.

We tried to make Sundays a table dinner at 5.00pm with our son but with illness and life we've not succeeded in that for some time.

Half and half really, different reasons. We sit on the sofa if the fire's on, if there's something we want to watch, if we're knackered. We sit at the table in the summer with the doors open, if we're having something we share or serve ourselves, if we have guests, if we've got more time to sit around and chat. I don't feel either is wrong. Oddly, the kids always insist on having their breakfast at the table but I like the sit on the sofa.

We enjoyed our usual 5pm Sunday meal as a family. The only reason it stopped recently is because we've not been home much on recent Sundays gone by.

Many of you might be happy to know that topic of convo at the dinner table was doing the same thing on a Friday, when we both wfh so can put something in the slow cooker or casserole dish, even a shepherds pie or something in the afternoon ready for 5.30pm when we finish work and just push DS meal back 30 min. Fridays used to signal a takeaway treat, London has a lot of options (every restaurant practically delivers) but not anymore, we will cook/eat.

Same for Saturday we will cook and eat early.

Tricky the days we are in the office or can't finish dead on 5.00pm. But at least 3/7 evenings we will eat as a family at the table.

You see, I think children need to eat at the table with their parents.
At 16 months old you should be modelling good table behaviour and eating at the table.
how do you expect them to learn?

This is our thinking.
Since having our DS we eat nearly all meals at the table, as a family.
We have breakfast together at 07.15 and we all have tea together at 4.30pm (i do understand we are ok to do this based on our working and being at home) Also we feel loads better for eating an earlier tea and a light supper if needed.

In our opinion it is really important to eat with your kids (i know our time is early, so would push tea out or move it to a family suppet if we needed to) , it teaches good table manners and to eat properly at the table, as they get older its a great chance for a family chat. Even at 16 months, he haf his high chair at the table and we ate at the same time- start as you mean to go on we thought.

Well yes judging by some responses, many people are not working 5 days a week like DH and me do and in office 1-2 times a week each.

DS is in nursery, drop off 8am and pick up between 5-6.30pm so actually if it's a late pick up they feed him something there and we put him straight in the bath.

Weekdays typically DH or me will be out once a week between us so weekdays go very fast.

We live in Lodon so spend a lot of weekends out and about. That's probably why we don't eat at 4-5pm with DS every night.

I never eat on the sofa, it feels wrong. Always at the table.

Same.
