Dinner on the sofa most nights

Anyone else? Or is this a strange household habit we have.

My husband and I have been like this since we met 10+ years ago. To start with he lived in a flat without a dining table and then when we moved in it was a small unappealing thing and now we just have no excuse, we eat on the sofa 99% of the time.

We tried to make Sundays a table dinner at 5.00pm with our son but with illness and life we've not succeeded in that for some time.

Breakfast and dinner in the dining room. Lunch usually on the go, or on trays on the sofa. TV never on until dinner is tidied away.

lpylu · 17/02/2024 22:42

Just keeps swimming - our 16 month old eats at a high chair at 5pm.
One person puts him to bed and the other makes dinner/tidies up and we are both on the sofa for 7.30pm, tv and dinner.

Every meal is at the dining table in our house

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 17/02/2024 22:48

You see, I think children need to eat at the table with their parents.
At 16 months old you should be modelling good table behaviour and eating at the table.
how do you expect them to learn?

Guesstherevels · 17/02/2024 22:50

Never had a table growing up. Never lived in a house with enough space. We always ate our dinner on our laps in front of the telly and I've nothing but warm happy memories of the time spent with my loving family.

I think people get a bit worked up about eating at the table. It doesn't really matter.

greengreengrass25 · 17/02/2024 22:51

Yes on sofa.

Have a table

Allican · 17/02/2024 22:51

We ate dinner on the sofa off trays for years. But now we have kids so we all eat dinner together at the table. On the rare occasions where dh and I eat separate dinner from the kids (eg we get a takeaway once they’re in bed) I’m straight back to the sofa and tray!

Mazuslongtoenail · 17/02/2024 22:55

I’ve only ever once eaten from the sofa, when I was at a friend’s house and I found it much fiddlier and awkward. If I really had to watch something I’d put the laptop on the table instead.

lilyfire · 17/02/2024 22:56

Is this a London specific sofa meal thing?

TotalDramarama24 · 17/02/2024 22:57

I never eat anything on the sofa, all meals are at the table. It feels weird to be slouching when I eat and feels like I won't digest the meal properly. I might eat a chocolate bar on the sofa in front of the TV but that's it. We like to chat at the table over meals.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/02/2024 22:58

We are at the table every day then about a year ago we started eating at the sofa. I'm thinking of cutting that to just weekends actually as it takes DD ages to eat and she seems to eat less. She's almost 11

OnceinaMinion · 17/02/2024 22:59

DH generally gets home late. If didn’t eat in front of the TV we wouldn’t get to see anything.
Often we only manage an hour or so before teenager comes down to sit with us before bed.

TwylaSands · 17/02/2024 23:00

All meals at the table in our house.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/02/2024 23:04

We pretty much always eat at the kitchen table unless it’s something like a takeaway or cheese/charcuterie type stuff. If it’s just me by myself I tend to make something I can eat from a bowl, like pasta, and eat on the sofa.

SwordToFlamethrower · 17/02/2024 23:15

Husband always ate on the sofa at his mum's house, with only a fork. So all meals were prepped in such a way that only a fork was ever necessary.

And there was me, a yorkshire lass, always using a knife and fork and always sitting at the table thinking that southerners were posh.

We are married now and meals are served at the table. Husband gets the evil side eye if i catch him eating just with a fork!

ThePoshUns · 17/02/2024 23:33

Always at table / breakfast bar

Twoshoesnewshoes · 17/02/2024 23:38

Always at the table.
but we don’t have a tv so there’s not much incentive to be on the sofa!

morellamalessdrama · 18/02/2024 08:09

We all eat at the table as a family apart from Saturday nights when we eat in the living room.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 18/02/2024 08:10

Nah, we always eat dinner at table and most other meals. How can a child eat on the sofa; must be such a mess. And I hope you don’t have the TV on.

KevinDeBrioche · 18/02/2024 08:13

Always eat at the table.

People don't read, so they. Again. My son is 16 months and eats at his high chair, strapped in, with him bib at 5pm. My husband and I eat after he goes to bed at 7pm, exhausted on the sofa. As said twice above.

Most people have dining tables tucked away in corners of the kitchen and no space for a dining room or an inviting dining table. Ours is pushed up against a wall with a bench to save space and it's no very comfortable, we bought chairs for one side but it's still not inviting and we are just exhausted and don't want to sit there.

I think it’s different when they are still very little and need to eat earlier. When he’s older you might consider family dinners at the table?

Oblomov24 · 18/02/2024 08:29

No. We have always sat at the dinning room table for almost every meal. I like to sit upright, with cutlery, sauces, plate the food and have any extras (say rust potatoes) in a bowl. Sit and talk about our day. Only eat on the sofa very rarely.
