New thread for August.

OP posts:
SushiMummy · 12/08/2008 14:04

steppie - was last Sunday your DD's birthday? I swear I saw your DD's birthday card read out on cbeebies (well, at least someone looking very much like your DD with the same name!).

sfx - how's your running going? Weather not good for jogging, isn't it?

SushiMummy · 12/08/2008 14:07

Oh I see. We are hiring but my company is not big enough to have FD (we outsource). Good luck, anyway.

Hope you all have a fab time in Camber.

rosmerta · 12/08/2008 14:21

Kew, you are welcome round to mine, bunyan's had to cancel & I just can't be bothered to leave the house

There's some very annoying bass music pounding away & I can't figure out where its coming from

slng · 12/08/2008 15:14

We are home too, if anyone wants to venture north of the M4.

We already have a train set that spans our albeit tiny living room and hallway. Would I be mad to consider getting more bits for the set? We have our eyes on a turntable ... And it would be nice to have a mechanical switch ...

PaddlePig · 12/08/2008 15:52

so no one thinks it would be a really bad idea to take out a whopping big loan in order to fund my escapist fantasty?

iirc it was steppie's dd's b'day earlier this year.

mind you i could be confused about that coz I seem to recall it was warm and sunny therefore it might have been summer 2008.

because clearly we are now in Autumn 2008

slng, yes you are bonkers.

sfx, enjoy dinner.

sushi, you work too hard!!

ComeOVeneer · 12/08/2008 15:56

HI all. Pounding headache here, the children are driving me crazy. Trying to get everything sorted for the holiday, get house clean, laundry etc. Managed to do an online order for the day after we get back from France so won't have to venture out on the Sunday.

Also have been to Tescos (New Malden) to stock up on dd's school unifom/pe kit so we don't have to deal with that on the Sunday too. Whilst in there ds decided to do a runner and in a split second vanished. I searched high and low and couldn't find him. The staff searched, the secuity guy scanned all the cctv cameras but no sign. By now I am frantic with thoughts of abduction etc. turns out the little bugger was merrily playing up and down in the lift, wasn't in the least bit concerened that he had no idea where I was for at least 15 minutes!

That child will be the death of me. I am at a loss as to how to make him understand how dangerous his actions are,he just seems oblivious.

rosmerta · 12/08/2008 17:33

Kew, nice to see you & gherkin today. Sorry ds's ideas of sharing didn't work in reality!

Slng, sorry didn't see your message, would love to come over another time instead!

rosmerta · 12/08/2008 17:34

Cov, sorry ds is giving you trouble, unfortunately I can see my ds already starting some of that behaviour!

slng · 12/08/2008 19:34

COV how terrifying!

Ros - would love to have you and DS over some time!

Tried to teach DS1 how to kick a football properly yesterday. I remember learning it when I was little - from a book from the library! It is quite fun, isn't it, playing football? Still, it would take a lot to make me watch a match ...

SJ99 · 12/08/2008 19:44

COV - you must've been really worried

Sfx - hope you're enjoying your lovely clean carpets

Hi Sushi - glad you could take a breather from work for a while. We're off to Leeds at the wkend to visit my uni mate & maybe BIL, maybe we can meet another wkend

Ros- ta for tip on Alias, have yet to work through all of 24 yet but will check it out after that

Lunch with friend was lovely. She didn't know I was pg as I wanted to tell her in person and so she'd lined up an interview for me, v. sweet of her but obviously no use now. Will keep the contact though for future ref.
DH braved Ikea this afternoon with DS Think he found it more stressful than he thought it would be

Kewcumber · 12/08/2008 19:46

slng had I logged on and had DS known you had a proper train set, Ros would have been unceremoniously dumped by DS for the lure of a proper train set. (She now has experience of seeing how obsessed he is by trains!).

Atcually Ros I didn't think they were too bad considering neither had had a nap.

Playing bridge here this evening so had to come in and make the pigsty place look marginaly presentable.

Slng - what days/hours do you work, I'm always a bit confused by when you are around.

Met the au pair/nanny from next dor but one today - seems very nice. Her employers have been a little stand-offish - pleasant but wave from a distant and seem to run for their front door when we get out of cars together. Have provisionally arranged a playdate one Firday morning when we get back though playgroup might be on the cards instead.

slng · 12/08/2008 19:57

Kew - I work half days everyday. From next week DC will be in nursery 9-3.30, to get DS1 used to the hours for school. (I'm in two minds about this - one part of me says I should let him get used to longer hours in a familiar environment, the other part of me says to make the most of school free days. But this is also my busy time at work ....) Anyway I plan to skive off regularly on Friday afternoons, so perhaps we can arrange something at some point!

Oh GOD, not school ... now see what you've done. You've reminded me about school ...

I'm going to fish the laundry out of the washing machine to take my mind of the dreaded s-word.

rosmerta · 12/08/2008 19:57

Not that bad really, just the usual territorial behaviour! Though ds did tell dh on the phone that he had shared with gherkin

susiecutiebananas · 12/08/2008 20:07

hello all

Hope you are all well. I'm sorry, not had chance to catch up on thread. Izzy is being very Very lively, really getting to me... she was up at 4am this morning and didn't go back to sleep until noon

I did dose at 9am for a bit and woke up to toothpaste being smeared on my face

HOliday was lovely. I had a good break as parents chipped in SO much. DH & I actually went to pub ( about 20 paces from house!) every night. So spent a lot of time talking. some good, some bad. I'm feeling quite confused now about alot of things.

Would be great to meet up if anyone is up to anything this week. prob friday best again for me, I've got occ health appointment tomorrow lunchtime and thusrsday afternoon I've another interrogation meeting with witches of eastwick HR & Dir Nursing etc.... so feeling sick about it all.

Hope you are all ok? To those going, looking forward to your holiday in camber sands? I'm SO jealous and wish I were coming too!

sillybigsausage · 12/08/2008 20:11

Susie LOL at witches!!!

Ros - I think that annoying pounding music was coming from Paddlepig's neighbours!!!

Cov - how worrying - there is only one explanation for your DS's behaviour - he's a BOY!!!

Hope everyone ius hunky dorey - am up to my eyes in it at work atm

sfxmum · 12/08/2008 20:41

hello all

hi susie nice to see you back glad it went ok, hope meeting not too bad considering

COV poor you must have been terrifying no advice sorry hard to know what to say

slng dd might come visit sometime it is the trains you see

we had a very nice afternoon at kew followed by dinner at kew Inn, which dh managed to find

think will have a quiet day tomorrow just popping over to Kew retail so if anyone wants to drop by feel free

must go fish child out of bath and send her off to sleep, bit difficult given how excited she is.
she told the waitress today that Bush was a nasty man cause mummy said so when we were watching the Olympics

SJ IMO 24 is just propaganda for torture, but first season is ok

SJ99 · 12/08/2008 20:51

LOL at Minisfx
I agree 1st series is the best, the more recent ones are getting ridiculous but now I've started watching it's strangely addictive so must continue and get hold of series 5&6!

Slng - I'm sure DS wold love to play on trainset too! BTW did you like those courgette muffins? Was going to try that recipe tom as have some courgettes that need using up

Susie - glad you had good holiday. Would like to meet as I'm sure you must be only down the road from me! DH has this and next week off so not really planning much atm. May go to History or Childhood museum on Fri though

susiecutiebananas · 12/08/2008 21:02

sillybig- trust me, they are witches... maybe more of a Macbeth/ Shakespearian way... lets hope they are not predicting my future though

Just managed to get Isobel off to sleep. its been a LOOOOOONG day! She has not been havig her nap the last few days. Yesterday it was because she knew Daddy was going back to work, so every time we tried she cried. In the end she went to bed at 18:30. Hence waking at 4am. Luckily he had a normal nap today and bed at almost normal time so fingers crossed we'll be back to usual tomorrow.

KC, have just read back a little, I also am seriously liking the look of Latitude. Would be genuinely interested. Do you know what the dates are next year? Just that we are booking our week in Sennen again soon, so we can get a good week out of season, have to book this far in advance! ridiculous I know... but about £400 cheaper.

slng · 12/08/2008 21:24

SJ - courgette muffin not a success, probably because
(1) used cheap Lidl cheddar which tasted of nothing
(2) looked like cakes but NOT SWEET

Having said that the texture was really nice. Maybe better if treated as bread rather than cake.

SJ99 · 12/08/2008 21:26

Slng - thanks, will try and think of it as bread not muffin, was going to make a coleslaw to go with it. Will let you know how it goes

sfxmum · 12/08/2008 21:54

I will do the parsnip carrot rosemary loaf so yummy ordered parsnips on purpose it is lovely

dd took ages to fall asleep tha I nearly dropped off myself definitely quiet day tomorrow we need to recover

susie dates for Latitude on their website it is usually mid July

Kewcumber · 12/08/2008 22:58

latitude dates 16th, 17,th, 18th, & 19th July 2009

stepfordwife · 12/08/2008 23:26

hello all
well 2 adults trying to work from home + 3 children to ignore entertain-- = frustration

so sympathies on the work front, sausage, it's challenging a pain in the arse juggling it all in the summer hols, isn't it? esp when all you want to do is muck about.

and those (still) empty boxes kindly on loan from SJ are still calling my name..

glad you had a good holiday, susie.

hello sushi no, as paddle said, wasn't dd's birthday...one of the zillion things on my "to do" list i haven't done...send birthday card for chlld's birthday to cbeebies to see aforementioned child's face light up...ach well...
wish we had seen it...sure i could have convinced dd it was her

cov..what a fright for you. it's not just boys - dd is the worst runner of my lot. i have to double lock the door now to prevent escapes

paddle, hope you're having a peaceful evening and not listening by proxy to die hard 3 or some such fare
and you're so right, april does seem like summer 2007.
right, better go to bed and read magazines
toodlepip

stepfordwife · 12/08/2008 23:39

actually, to get me away from magazines...

has anyone read a really funny book lately? i don't want a book that stretches me, makes me think, makes me smug because i understand the references, makes me feel intelligent....makes me proud to be seen with it on the tube..makes me wish i was as clever as the author...you get the idea..

i want a book that makes me laugh (no chick-lit although some of marion keyes' stuff makes me laugh as we obviously have the same mother)

has anyone read that one on office colleagues..can't remember what it's called at mo, but got 'the end" in title and swirly orange writing on cover..

any suggestions gratefully received. answers on a postcard....

sfxmum · 12/08/2008 23:53

hi Steppie
hope you have a less frustrating day tomorrow

let me think about funny books
I like Saramago find him pretty funny but he writes in long sentences (page long) not always great if not used to it
Robertson Davies is delightfully funny nevermind the clever references
likewise with David Lodge
how about 'the diaries of a provincial Lady'? love those

and Bill Bryson always makes me laugh will think of more and let you know

night night
