New thread for new month!

OP posts:
slng · 22/04/2008 14:03

I'm sure the kids would like it even more if I just fell asleep and shut up!

sfxmum · 22/04/2008 14:11

just been on another site I frequent and strayed into a techie forum asking about some stuff to do with new laptop

good grief it is another world terribly out of my depth and should not attempt to use terms I don't fully understand

it is like real life after all

Kewcumber · 22/04/2008 14:40

flat thing you look at = screen
knobbly thing you type on = keyboard
everything else = stuff

SushiMummy · 22/04/2008 14:48

Afternoon all.

CoV - House of Cake sounds good. I'm sure it'd be a success.

DS started going home with one of the carers since yesterday (so I can work late). I'm still anxious, a) longer hours at nursery for DS, b) less time with mummy at home and c) lack of exercise for me (I walk to/from nursery). I'm sure we'll survive.

sfxmum · 22/04/2008 14:50

he wants to know what kind of ipod I have and what version of Ubuntu I am using, I think he might be flirting
should I use mrs when signing my msgs?

mellow2 · 22/04/2008 14:57

Sfx, he's definitely flirting with you . What brought you to the techie site in the first place?

Be careful, he might not be of age.

It was dd's 2nd birthday yesterday. Dh bought me some flowers. I thought that was a very sweet gesture.
Considering he did b**ger all for Mother's Day two years running.

OP posts:
sfxmum · 22/04/2008 15:02

am betting on overweight and bald

well it is because I wanted this laptop to use Linux, it came preloaded with Ubuntu - I am much keener on the idea of open source.

but I want to be able to use my ipod with it to manage it etc. asked dh but he told he was too busy and suggested I made friends in the tech Linux forum of the open University (not much chance of lovely young thing there)

ok everyone else safe to keep reading now

dd is eating chocolate mouse doesn't want to go out

Kewcumber · 22/04/2008 15:05

Sushi - this kind of change is always a bit unsettling give it a month (and eat less chocloate) and it'll be fine.

Alternatively march up and down the station platform whilst waiting for the tube for exercise.

I'm considering a Wii Fit - how mad am I?

sfxmum · 22/04/2008 15:06

oh that is nice and happy birthday to the little one

sushi does this mean you are about to go?

ComeOVeneer · 22/04/2008 15:09

Well I have had an eeriey quiet day. Have decluttered my wardrobe and bathroom (to make way for my shopping treats next month ). Am of in a mo to collect (what I expect will be a very tired and grumpy) ds from nursery in a mo.

slng · 22/04/2008 15:19

sfx - I use ubuntu at work. It's a bit strange but never gave me any trouble because I never do anything exciting. We use some Debian variant at home.

We are watching Brum, which is weird on so many levels.

SushiMummy · 22/04/2008 15:19

Happy birthday mini-mellow. I remember her being a cute baby... Oh, how time flies...

QC - I know. I'm sure it'd be fine, too. Yesterday DS asked the carer where mummy was and she said "mummy will be home soon" and DS said "OK". So far so good. I'm thinking of buying a Wii in Japan (cheaper, more advanced range), is it compatible? Does anyone know?

Eating less chocolate? Hmmm. Just finished half a bucket of M&S chocolate cornflake mini bites. Yummy!

sfx - about to go where?

sfxmum · 22/04/2008 15:26

slng we watching that too - very weird but less evil than popshop

sushi thought you had business trip coming up

walking to the till M&S is a good exercise in restraint for me

no help with wii but we could start a running club

sfx and sushi,
Thanks for the b'day wishes.

Sushi,
I believe wii is region-locked. Unless you get someone to crack, it, probably, will play Asian and Japanese games only.

SushiMummy · 22/04/2008 15:33

sfx - oh, sorry. [doh emoticon] Yes, I'm off to Japan on 20 May for five days. DH askng for a high quality head phone and an ipod. Japan is like 20 years ahead of UK when it comes to technology.

sfxmum · 22/04/2008 15:37

I always think of Japan as real life cyberpunk novels

keep reading about stuff in dh's techie mags all that about paying for things with the mobile sort of like the oyster card etc.

SushiMummy · 22/04/2008 15:49

yes, you can buy a can of coke from a vending machine using a mobile. It's wierd seeing people on the train reading novels/watching tv&video on moby. Even my mum has optical fiber connection for her pc. Mega fast!

SushiMummy · 22/04/2008 15:59

The other thing Japan is sooo good at (am I boasting?) is service. For example, there's a really easy, reliable delivery service everywhere in Japan. You can send off your luggages from the airport to your home/hotel (and vise versa) and they get there within 3 hours - so handy if you have small kids.

In Tokyo I bought wrong tickets for the train and the tickets got swallowed up in the gate. Explained to the station staff and they were more than happy to re-issue tickets at no cost, even apologised being a bit confusing.

Suppose Japanese just love to please people.

Kewcumber · 22/04/2008 16:02

not boasting sushi - service in japan is fantastic, just what perfect servioce should be. Polite, pleasant, gift-wrapped, tip-less.

If it weren't for the fact that I look like a sumo wrestler out there and would have to perpetually buy two skirts (one for each leg) - I would be very tempted to live there. Oh yes and I only speak about 5 words of japanese.

Kewcumber · 22/04/2008 16:03

though if I'm being honest I could probably live without buying a can of coke from a vending machine... is it meant to be easier than giving a man in a kiosk 50p?!

sfxmum · 22/04/2008 16:04

LOL at the very idea of London underground doing anything vaguely similar.

last Sunday I was standing at the ticket barrier behind some people patiently explaining several to the dim staff that they did in fact have the right tickets
I may have lost it a bit what with the impatient toddler and all

SushiMummy · 22/04/2008 16:13

QC - 5 Japanese words are more than enough to survive. Remember everyone loves to help.

sfx - the problems is I'm used to the crap public transport service in London that everytime I go back to Japan, it's like a big shock to your system.

sfxmum · 22/04/2008 16:18

occasionally you get a witty train driver who amuses passengers when the inevitable delays happen, I remember being helpless with laughter along with the rest of the train.
not everyday the carriage doors open to a bunch of people laughing

he might have been fired or at the very least disciplined
