How exciting to be starting thread

Yay, thanks Sfx, am already looking forward to banana bread, mmmm!

In Sweden they had Noise Police (everything is so formally governed over there) but what a great idea, they used to go and put a stop the noise polluters, no messing.

good morning all

dd to dh 'are your boobies getting bigger?'

dh did not appreciate my laughter

ComeOVeneer · 24/01/2008 10:11

Morning all. SJ we are testing out the Toyota corolla verso. I have been cycling a fair bit the last week or so, but we still need a car (otherwise how could we visit MIL ?) Plus with play dates etc I need more seats that can accomodate boosters or car seats. ALso unfortunately these days our weekend social life (or rather more the childrens') and golf, swimming lessons etc etc means we really need to be a 2 car family now.

fitfox · 24/01/2008 12:25

SFX - was there a significance to DD asking your DH if his boobs are getting bigger?

sfxmum · 24/01/2008 12:42

do any of your children fear the vacuum cleaner? dd is extremely weary of it, and keeps shouting over its noise 'are you finished yet?'
maybe I don't do it often enough

found an old book of my mum's called 'School for Brides' very comprehensive how to guide from general housekeeping, recipes, etiquette, how to host different types of dinner parties and a huge section on how to be a good wife.

"when dh comes home make sure you look nice and the house is tidy, don't bother him with your household details, he had a hard day, present him with a drink and make sure dinner is not far from being served.
make sure the children don't bother him either.
PMSL

no mention of sex but I guess a proper housewife might out source that for efficiency sake - no wonder they were on Valium

foxie -

ComeOVeneer · 24/01/2008 12:45

"he had a hard day"!!!! WHat is running around after children considered to be then!?!?!

rosmerta · 24/01/2008 12:46

sfx, I remember extracts of that book being circulated on email years ago. IIRC there was a section on sex, basically you have to be ready & willing no matter when! Oh & lol at your dd (again!)

Went past Escale last night, its apparently going to be called Pomegranate (sp?) & become a Turkish grill

sfxmum · 24/01/2008 12:51

Yes I know the book has good recipes particularly for baking It is very old, my mum got it when she got married in '67, I have the Portuguese translation.
The etiquette section is quite funny love the bit on how to introduce people to each other.

The expectations on the wife are mind boggling

SJ99 · 24/01/2008 13:01

Hello all

LOL at book SFX, no pressure then?! I guess the author would not approve of minisfx comments to DH

Hosiptal visit went well but we were there for 2hrs, lucky there was train set in waiting rm to keep DS amused inbtw seeing various people. Consultant was v.helpful (won't go into details here, too long!) & DS didn't even flinch when they took loads of blood. They will re-assess allergies and refer him to a dietician.

Haven't actually met Amanada yet as her DD was not well but have emailed her of venue change!

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 24/01/2008 13:05

DS hates the hoover so your DD is not alone SFX

fitfox · 24/01/2008 13:11

Pomegrantite sounds as though it will be nice!!

DS2 loves the hoover and canoodles with it for hours and has got used to it when its on as well. He follows the cleaner round the house, coooing at her!

I read a book once called "how to be the perfick wife" and came to the conclusion that I actually really need one!

SJ99 · 24/01/2008 13:21

DS used to be scared of hoover until about 14mths old when he decided to call it a car. Since then he's been fine with it

OP posts:
sfxmum · 24/01/2008 13:34

that was my jitters anticipating the hoovering she started crying when she heard me getting it out of the cupboard and demanded to be put on the sofa surrounded by her dolls

when I had finished she asked 'mummy do you love hoovers?' 'no darling but they are useful'
'oh I am the only one who loves hoovers in this house' this is the same conversation we have about cars btw

Pomegranate sounds lovely

SJ glad it was ok think waiting in Paediatrics is inexcusable at least Kingston hospital has a fantastic waiting room.

sfxmum · 24/01/2008 13:35

but you go to West mid don't you is it ok there?

Paddlechick666 · 24/01/2008 13:43

arg! i just rang magnet to enquire about getting a kitchen design done.

i started off by saying i didn't have a huge budget and the only appliance i would definately need would be a stove.

she asked if i would want it fitted and i said yes please.

i re-iterated that it's a small kitche, i don't have a massive amount of money etc.

she then said what sort of worktop. i said "one i like that is service-able and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. i am simply wanting to re-model my kitchen. i am not a property developer and i am not expecting to add £15k to the value of my home with a new kitchen".

"yes madam, indeed. well we would be expecting £8k - £10k including appliances and then £3k to fit it".

to which I said "that's obscene and utterly outrageous. i'd rather go to MFI. I am completely shocked and I think you are profitting from this national obsession with property developing/interior design etc".

to which she said "oh no madam, we can do what you wish. shall i put you thru to our trade dept, it's cheaper in there".

ros, did you get my voicemail?

ele, thanks for updating the contacts list.

sfx, dd used to love the hoover, then she started disliking it, then she didn't see it for so long she didn't know what it was, now she just treats it with disdain and ignores it should she see it - which is rare!

pomegranate does sound nice.

Paddlechick666 · 24/01/2008 13:45

sorry, i realise that it's probably very boring and completely uninteresting to have a transcript of my conversation with magnet posted here.

but i freely admit to using MN as free-therapy and i needed to vent!

off to look at MFI now.

SJ99 · 24/01/2008 13:48

Yes went to W.Mid. Waiting room was fine, not loads of toys but enough to keep DS entertained and the people we saw were great which was the main thing

Haven't been to a hospital in the UK for yrs and it did remind me a little of an airport lounge in some ways, with all the shops, cafes and even a hairdressers how they have changed!

OP posts:
sfxmum · 24/01/2008 13:49

LOL paddle

about the list just realised my home number is out of date

Paddlechick666 · 24/01/2008 13:53

how the hell do these people on Property Ladder and Grand Designs get fantastically wonderful kitchens for £5k?

I thought I could get a servicable, pleasant one for about £2k - £3k on that basis.

Maybe I'll just get a new oven/hob and leave it at that for now!

SJ, glad ds enjoyed his hospital visit. will be grea to get that allergy review.

;-)

SJ99 · 24/01/2008 13:54

PC - that seems a crazy price for your sized kitchen

I have to say the kitchen we have is fab and tbh the owners have been very clever. If you look closely they have fitted all the units with Ikea stuff (cheap but nice) but have spent lots of money on the appliances. This combo works really well and could save you a packet

MN is good therapy

OP posts:
MrsRecycle · 24/01/2008 13:58

paddle - I hope you're reading this - if you go to MFI, they plan it all out for you and dh's best friend gets discount there and can fit it for you (a lot less than Magnets' £3k). We asked if he could do our 3m x 3m kitchen completely with integrated appliances and new worktops for less than £6k and he said, easily (that's everything labour/parts!!) Give me a call on my mobile, if you're interested and I'll give you his number. He's used to kids - he has a dd the same age as yours and has just had another little dd.

slng · 24/01/2008 14:32

Paddle - we got new oven/hob from Comet (not ever again - Let's just say replacing single oven with double oven does not fall within Comet's area of expertise. I don't know what does, in fact.) As for our dodgy cupboards and drawers doors DH just bolted them on and we are quite happy. Though one day we'll have to do something about it all... Will be watching with interest your MFI experience!

Must feed ds1 who is awake from his non-nap...

rosmerta · 24/01/2008 14:34

Paddle, I've got your message, sent you a text!

ComeOVeneer · 24/01/2008 14:36

Paddle we went to magnet and got a quote for our kitchen last year £20k by hthe time you bought new cupboards, tops, all apliances inc fridge and fitting (the fitting was outrageous even taking into account we had to have a lot of rewiring and replumbing done. MFI came in a lot cheaper. Just got back from a long ride (picked ds up at 1pm from nursery and just got back) for a quick catch up and a cup of tea before picking dd up from school, then no doubt onto the park with school friends. Have to make the most of this weather when it is around.

Kewcumber · 24/01/2008 15:09

Paddle think I paid about £5k for my kitchen including fitting from MFI(?) with free dishwasher and 50% in one of their interminable sales. Their fitters are expensive, someone else (my polish builder?) will probably do it for £1k.

You could easily buy an IKEA kitchen for £2k.

Paddlechick666 · 24/01/2008 15:49

aha! good ideas everyone! thanks. can't believe I didn't think of Ikea!

MrsR, thanks for that. Will do some research and get back to you.

TBH, I think I was just hoping someone clever could plan out the space for me so I can get best possible use.

Hmmm, interesting about Comet as I think I would be going from single oven to double or some such similar.

ros, ta
