have we skipped summer this year? Don't need to take DS to the fountains in festival place, we can just dash about in the garden!

kys · 14/08/2008 17:30

Totally depressing is'nt it. Had to let ds let off some steam today he's been driving me nuts. We kitted ourselves out from head to toe in waterproofs and played in the park, we got a few strange looks but it was worth it.

wonderstuff · 14/08/2008 17:43

Good for you kys! The rain is driving me potty, we got a ickle paddling pool during that sunny week way back and dd loved it, its so boring being stuck in all the time.

kys · 15/08/2008 10:03

Oh my god we have a clear sky!!!
This is typical, i told my ds that we would do junk modelling today and make loads of mess, now the suns out and i suggested a trip to finkley farm and he replied "no thank you mummy i want to make a mess"
So, i'm leaving him with daddy to do junk modelling and im off to do retail therapy with dh's money!!!

wonderstuff · 15/08/2008 12:15

Have fun, I'm manically washing because guess what? Rain tomorrow!

Housemum · 12/10/2008 00:44

Hello Basingstoke, glad to see some names on here, everyone else I speak to on MN seems to be in London or the Midlands! (And I may have spoken to one of you in RL at Brookvale in the past as I saw the mention of coffee and chat! )

Niecie · 12/10/2008 01:01

How exciting - MN Local - Basingstoke pops up not once but twice in Active Convos! Unheard of!

I knew it existed but never actually been around when anybody posts!

How is everybody doing?

A lot of you seem to have little ones and I am passed that stage thank goodness (I think). DS2 started school this term but I am happy to share info if I have anything useful to add. I have lived in Basingstoke since I was 4 yrs old, on and off, so I know most of what there is to know!

kys · 13/10/2008 11:04

Blimey, I thought everyone in basingstoke had vanished or something so marvellous was happening in the town that they no longer had time for mumsnet

wonderstuff · 13/10/2008 11:26

We need a topic of conversation! Fave things to do with the lo's in and around town?? We had a good day out at Finkley down last month, was quite sweet although dd was more interested in the other children than the animals, could have taken her to the park really !!

kys · 13/10/2008 11:41

We love finkley down and The action farm on the newbury rd. But same as your dd wonderstuff my ds just wants to play, cheaper to go to the park.
Ds is obsessed with trains so we spend many hrs sat on the train bridge out near oakley.

wonderstuff · 13/10/2008 11:47

the flying scotsman sometimes goes through bstoke, you could find out when and take ds kys? its very noisy and smelly, quite harry potter!! 'thomas' sometimes goes down the watercress line too.

kys · 13/10/2008 11:56

We turnt up the bridge the other wk and it was jammed packed with anoraks with cameras etc, 5mins later a huge steam engine came along, ds was ecstatic, couldnt believe our timing. We've been on thomas quite a few times, its a really lovely day. And for the last 2 yrs we've taken him on the santa express at alton, you sit in your chair with your glass of wine and mince pie and santa comes round to every child with a small gift.

wonderstuff · 13/10/2008 12:06

How cool! That would have been the scotsman, saw it once at the station, love that smell of coal, can see why people get excited about trains after seeing it, soo dramatic. Can't wait till isla is old enough to get excited about such stuff, banging stacking cups does it for her at the moment.

Housemum · 13/10/2008 12:23

Ooh, I'm excited now - never knew the Scotsman came through here (will now be googling timetables...) - I only ever see the trains to Waterloo!

Both my DDs love going to the park, and it often surprises me how little used they are - apart from the big ones eg Eastrop. We sometimes go to the one at Beggarwood on a Sunday afternoon and might see one other child in there.

kys · 13/11/2008 13:38

Meglet have you had your baby????
Its been so quiet on here recently.
I've just been having a nose back over old threads and realised you were due in sept, how'd it go?
I know i'm nosey

meglet · 14/11/2008 21:45

oooh, thanks for asking kys. I did have my baby. She is 10 weeks now . It went really well, had a planned cs at the hospital and recovery was really fast. I am just trying to figure out how on earth to juggle 2yo DS and DD now!

Meglet · 30/12/2008 21:05

sad news... no more farmers markets in town. it seems basingstoke is continuing it's long plumment into chav hell.

dp liked the hog roast rolls for a hangover cure breakfast treat.

lollyheart · 04/01/2009 13:00

Hello everyone.

Happy new year to you all.

Im clare, I have a dd age 4, ds1 age 2 and ds2 is 17 weeks.

Just thought i would pop in to say hello

Niecie · 04/01/2009 13:20

Hi Lollyheart. Nice to meet you!

Are you a long-standing Basingstoker or just moved here?

Meglet - Agree with Chav hell.I dread to think what is going to end up in the old Woolies shop.

We didn't go the farmers' much as we tend to go to church but still went a couple of times a year and enjoyed it. They look like they are going to do the Odiham ones but they are only twice a year.

lollyheart · 04/01/2009 13:45

Hi Niecie

I moved to basingstoke when i was 16 so 11 years ago.

I think maybe a small mothercare or something similar would be good where wollies is, i was in town the other day looking for a coseytoes, mandp had them but not in the colour i wanted.

Niecie · 04/01/2009 14:11

Not much we can teach you about Basingstoke then, Lollipop!

I should have said, since you introduced yourself properly, I have 2 boys (8yrs and 5yrs). DS2 has just started reception. Is your eldest at school?

Mothercare would be good (was the town centre one still open when you moved to Basingstoke?) although I would have thought unlikely with a big one out of town. I can't really think who might take it over. I hope it doesn't stay a big gaping hole in the town for ages but with things as they are, I don't suppose many businesses will be opening new stores.

lollyheart · 04/01/2009 14:35

My dd starts school in sept, i should get the letter in a couple of weeks to tell me what school has a place for her. I am abit worried about it really, the school i want her to go to is not out catchment, if she doesnt get into it i think i will sell up and move.

No i didnt live here when mothercare was in town.

Niecie · 04/01/2009 16:24

Which school do you want her to go to? When you do you find out? Is it still January?

lollyheart · 04/01/2009 18:59

Yes it is still in january.

I live in popley i must say i like living here, its quiet and i have lovely neighbours and we have made our house into our home.

The school i want her to go to is marnell, the results are getting better each year, the head has just had the whole infants refurbed and has lots off new equipment.

Our catchment is merton, the results are not as good and the school could do with a lick of paint, there are lots of other little reasons why i want her to go to marnell but i wont bore you i could go on and on.
I am just praying she gets a place.
There are 70 places at marnell because of all the houses going up but the building work has stopped so i am hopefull.

What school do your boys go to? [im nosy too]

Niecie · 04/01/2009 20:41

My boys go to Kempshott - we live next door!

Great (really great actually) infants school, not so great juniors but a new head starts this term so hopefully it will match the infants one day.

Nothing wrong with Popley. Like most areas there are good bits and bad bits! Don't know much about your local schools - are you very far out of catchment for your favourite school? If you are only just outside of catchment and near the top of the waiting list (if you don't get in which hopefully you will), you might still get in between Jan and Sept anyway as people change their minds or move. That happened to us as we were outside of catchment when we applied for Kempshott and we ended getting a letter in May saying DS had a place. Fingers crossed for you though.
