I did and had a really lovely birth, but hey it did only last 54mins from start to finish. I was in for 36hrs after giving birth and i have no complaints. Had prob with my after care though, they forgot me after i'd gone home and i saw no one for 8days, good job i'd worked in childcare for 15yrs so kind of knew what to do with a baby. Scarey when its your own though.

JackBlackRoady · 05/02/2008 15:53

54 mins is amazing! How lovely to have the birth you wanted! So your DS is 3 now?

I had my son in Bradford Royal Infirmary, and I had to be in for 4 weeks before I had him because of pre-eclampsia. Wondering a lot about what it will be like this time...

I had to take my DS to the hospital yesterday for a physio appmt - at 5pm! The queues coming out were mental. What are they building near the entrance? Is it residential flats?

kys · 05/02/2008 16:11

i dont know what their building now, it used to be a blokes hostel. The queues and parking are awful up there arent they, i tend to walk, it takes an hour but it often works out quicker. Guess you cant do that from overton, unless your a mad women!! Yeah my ds is just 3 and a total darling, in my eyes anyway. others may not agree.
4 wks in hospital my god that must of been a nightmare. Hope this time is much better for you. Do you want to know what your having this time?

kys · 05/02/2008 16:13

Sorry just realised you already know its a girl. Blonde moment xx

JackBlackRoady · 05/02/2008 16:29

I would have been happy with a boy though, they are so great! Every age my DS has been, I have loved it!

DH loves the name Isla for a girl. But it sounds not as good in my Yorkshire accent!

kys · 05/02/2008 16:38

Even the age he is now? I have 11 nieces and nephews (and 1 more arriving as we speak unless the midwife has managed to stop the labour, its 2months early) and i have to say my 12yr old nephew is lovely but the 13yr old has just developed a total attitude. Its scarey to think of my sweet little man becoming a teenager.
I like the name isla, i like the more traditional names.

JackBlackRoady · 06/02/2008 08:47

Yea, he can be a pita, but also he is really sweet and funny and very emotionally intelligent sometimes! He's been ace when I have had disgusting sickness with this LO. On Sunday he came back from a bike ride with his dad, and they had gone pretty far, his legs were wobbly and he was very tired. He sat on the sofa and started to tell me about this book he had read on 'survival situations' and how ppl have to keep going through the pain. That there was one person who broke their ankle but kept walking on it as they would have died otherwise.... then he showed me this little graze on his finger and in all seriousness explained how he got this injury on a downhill stretch and just had to keep going.... after all, it was a survival situation...

I had to stuff my fist in my mouth to stop rofl!!!

meglet · 06/02/2008 13:58

jackblack in answer to your question about giving birth in North Hants hospital. I did (in Nov 06). They were fab when I was in labour and even more fab when we realised it was going wrong and I needed an emergency c-section, operating theatre staff were great too. But the post-natal care was a bit crap (to put it mildy). I was speaking to a midwife recently who said they are ploughing all the money into the actute maternity care but cannot afford to improve the after care . But I daresay if you have a normal birth you can come home quite fast.

kys · 06/02/2008 15:04

That is so sweet. And so unlike a typical bloke who would of gone to bed for a wk

LinzandOllie · 06/02/2008 15:40

I had Oliver at North Hants........ (June 07)
I went in on the THursday to be induced.........i was the ONLY ONE on the antenatal ward and the rest was very quiet, still sat waiting for 3 hours! Once i was induced, it was ok....ended up having Ollie on the Saturday, straightforward birth (through which student midwife and midwives were fab)....but they would not let me go home till the Monday.... Because he wouldn't feed - but i am sooo not going in to that as i get so annoyed when i think about it, the midwives only seemed to be bothered about him breastfeeding (which was unsuccessful) rather than my mental state! (not to mention starving a very big baby!) The healthcare assistants on the postnatal ward were LOVELY.....they were soo fab! (the midwives were nice, but they are just so over-worked and have targets to meet eg:breastfeeding!) After all of that i would have no problem with having a baby there again....will just pack some bottles in my bag, just in case!

JackBlackRoady · 06/02/2008 20:04

thank you LinzandOllie and meglet! I am so hoping for a straightforward birth, I keep thinking 'it is number 2 ' but with such a big age gap i think maybe my body will think it's number 1 again !

You know that you see a community midwife at your doctors surgery? Do they see you when you are in hospital?

kys · 07/02/2008 08:07

My midwife popped in for 5mins to say hello after the birth but that was it.
linzandOllie- its awful the way some of them treat you when trying to breast feed, my son had a v low birth weight and wouldnt take to breast, so i immediately demanded they got me a bottle, which they did without any fuss. But later in the day when a "more mature" (in other words, "old bag") midwife came on duty she tried to make me feel awful. In the end i v politely (not) said he's my son and as long as hes eating i dont care where its coming from. I did feel guilty but at the end of the day he was already tiny and i just wanted him to eat. Hes still small for his age but he eats anything and everything and i really dont think it done him any harm.

PurpleLostPrincess · 09/02/2008 11:56

When I had DS I was only 17 and everybody was brilliant. I stayed in for a week afterwards due to a water infection and they really looked after me. With DD1 I was home by the next day and all went well.

However, with DD2 I had an awful experience both with labour and aftercare - they didn't notice that she didn't have a hole in her bottom and they sent me home! (yes, the paeditrician checked her and didn't notice and also I showed the discharge nurse who fobbed me off, as well as them not noticing when she was born!). As a result, she was rushed to Southampton at 3 days old because I insisted she wasn't right to the midwife who came to the house. If she hadn't seen somebody and had her colostomy that day, she wouldn't be here now... doesn't bear thinking about!

So, 2 out of 3 went really well and if I ever got pg again (which I won't!); I'd have it up there, albeit with a bit of caution...

JBR - hilarious story about DS, was laughing out loud when I read that bless him!

JackBlackRoady · 11/02/2008 13:34

thank you everyone for the stories about NH Hospital! I have to be quick and go home in a moment, at my MIL's, I have no internet at home - stupid AOL!!! - we moved house on Thursday. Boxes everywhere and I am too tired to do anything properly
Anyone fancy meeting for coffee this week? On Wednesday or Thursday maybe? My email is gerrygray [at] gmail [dot] com if you fancy it - I have got to get out of the box maze! I'll check my email tomorrow and Wed morning btw.
lots of love, JBR xxx

LinzandOllie · 12/02/2008 14:20

Kys - I too had issues with a 'more mature' breastfeeding obsessed barbaric midwife...hmm i wonder if it's the same one..i do remember her name, but shall not post it here!
Sounds like i am completely anti-breastfeeding..but i am sooo not!
xx

I cant remember her name, i just remember her taking his bottle away and trying to get him to drink out of a medicine cup!!!! At 6hrs old!!!! I asked her v politely to go away.
I just feel its a personal choice, if for any reason you cant or dont want to then it shouldnt be such a major issue.I would of loved to when i had ds, but he just wouldnt. I refuse to beat myself up about it and if i have another i'll try again x

JackBlackRoady · 17/02/2008 16:05

I hope I will be able to breastfeed this time - it was so painful with DS

I have to get some craft bits next week, going to go to Fabric Land in Basingstoke, and to Pack Lane Crafts, might also try the Viables Craft Centre, as I have never been and promised I would go. Isn't there a craft shop near the top of town too? Kind of opposite Macdonalds but along a bit towards all the estate agents?

JBR xxx

meglet · 18/02/2008 13:42

Papersmiths is just near Macdonalds, sort of opposite Bakers Arms and Maidenhead Inn.

JackBlackRoady · 20/02/2008 10:41

I found it - thank you! I don't often go up to the top of town, which is a shame as there are some sweet shops there. But I always park in Riverdene (where I used to live) and walk into the bottom, along the park, and then I am too lazy to walk up the top too!

My son seems to think in half term I will suddenly relax all rules - he's tried: getting up later, eating breakfast in his room, asking to stay out past dinner time, having chocolate for lunch! God he's exhausting!

meglet · 04/03/2008 13:17

where is everyone lately?......... has something amazing happened in basingstoke to get us off the computers?

Nothing to report in meglet towers. DS has finally taken 2 steps, but is refusing to do any more. However he did rub a biscuit all over the sofa this morning, thankfully its washable. Been looking for a dentist for him, have to register with the new one all the way out in Tadley! Must go, got baby music class in a bit. x

JackBlackRoady · 05/03/2008 08:30

hello, i'm here! i had no internet and so was finding it hard to post!

dentists - what a pain they are - when we moved here from Kent about 2 yrs ago now, i registered with one near us, NHS for DS and private for me and DH, as they said they didn't take on NHS adults and I did phone around a few and got that answer a lot. I've spent loads there, as I needed a couple of repairs to fillings and them changed for white fillings. So when I found out i was pg, I asked for a checkup and they said they won't treat me as free. they don't do any NHS adults she said. bloody money grabbers.

kys · 06/03/2008 14:15

I tried to register my ds and i at my dh's dentist and was told by the receptionist that they had no spaces, but at his next appointment my dh asked the actual dentist and his reply was "yea sure no problem at all just tell the receptionist i said yes" Unbelievable.
I cant believe you've had to go to Tadley thats crazy, what if you didnt drive?

JackBlackRoady · 06/03/2008 14:42

hmmm, maybe i should try asking the dentist himself then...

PurpleLostPrincess · 07/03/2008 09:42

Was in hospital with DD2, operation went great and now settling into 'normal' life (well as normal as possible in our house!). Really strange to be having poos and farts lol!

DH had really bad toothache for ages but every time we called our dentist they were shut (only open mondays and thursdays or something). Managed to get hold of them, only to be told that despite us both being NHS exempt, we'd have to pay privately because the dentists NHS contract has run out till April!!! We only joined there because they originally took NHS exempt patients. Had to pay a fortune for some emergency work but he's now going back in April when it will be free.
