Dotty - ah shame about the coffee shop in Browsers.

WeAreSix · 13/03/2014 13:13

I'm thinking of relocating to Suffolk from West Sussex... It's a big decision to make!

I grew up in Cambs but my parents moved just over the border a few years ago. I particularly like Bury St Edmunds to visit when we're up there. The biggest difference I notice is that there is much, much less traffic. Which I like!

Does anyone live in or can recommend any nice villages near Bury?

elfycat · 13/03/2014 13:28

Come up here WeAreSix, I came here due to Dh and his job (army) and we ended up coming back here from W.Sussex (Emsworth) when he 'retired'. If we hadn't already bought the house up here we might have stayed down there out of convenience. That would have been a shame.

The whole 'rat race' thing the south east corner has going has somehow missed this area and yet we're still not far from London and there are regular trains. Best of both worlds.

I'm not sure about the dim thing. Now DD1 is at school I see more of the spread of inhabitants from the town and most of them seem normal (for a given range). Some are Suffolk locals and others have moved here. At 5 all of the children seem ok; bright, energetic, friendly for the most part. Of course they will all have individual academic ability (as a MNetter my child obviously falls into gifted and talented mostly at creating mayhem).

I live between Chichester and Brighton. A27 hell :)

I don't have great faith in Ofsted, but the inspection reports I've read for the areas I've liked the look of are much better than here.

Property prices around Bury don't seem much better than here? I'd love a 4+ detached ideally. Although the idea of somewhere with adjoining property for holiday let is alluring :)

Ergh that road! Used to drive to my parents in Bexhill all the time. The Worthing bit... the daft non by-passed bit at Arundel.

We have A11, A14 and A12 which suddenly decide to narrow down and go through a tourist-magnet town.

There were 3 schools I could have applied for and I got the one I wanted, we're catchment. But even the 'worst' one of them has a fan base and 'good' at Ofsted.

We did think to move to West Kent, but the competitiveness of the schooling system was a major 'NO' for us.

justicewomen · 13/03/2014 13:43

Well I'm staring out of my office window in Ipswich, wishing I could be strolling around Christchurch Park. We do have some splendid parks here.

Best Suffolk country pub Ive found recently is The Greyhound at Pettistree just outside Woodbridge. Ive also a soft spot for the Veggie Red Lion in Great Bricett.

Which don't*

Dawndonnaagain · 13/03/2014 13:45

It is a shame about the coffee shop in Browsers. The guy was saying that the rent on the other shop was too much and that there were too many coffee shops in Woodbridge, I can see his point.
We go there regularly, we like to support local(ish) bookshops and we hate Amazon.

WeAreSix · 13/03/2014 13:52

That's right where I am elfy ;) Worthing is generally awful for traffic. I need to be at Brighton hospital tomorrow for a 9am appt so I have to leave at 7:30.

The trouble is, if the A27 was any wider, the Downs would be trashed.

Cheesymonster · 13/03/2014 13:53

I'm in Suffolk too, didn't realise there were so many mners here!

I have spent the morning on the beach at Walberswick. It was so nice I'm heading back with the dog and DS when he gets back from school.

WeAreSix · 13/03/2014 14:17

Suffolk I bet there's not much you miss about Sunny Worthing!

Halesworth has a lovely bookshop and Framlingham has a fab second hand bookshop. The East Suffolk line from Lowestoft to Ipswich is a lovely train ride with children!

TheBeautifulVisit · 13/03/2014 14:49

Edward's tea shop in Halesworth (thoroughfare) is lovely for afternoon tea. When I was younger my little sis and i used to go on our own for tea (we thought we were very sophisticated). It used to have Edward's department store next door, which was known locally as Harrods, Halesworth.

It does always seem sunnier, brighter and clearer in Suffolk.

LottieJenkins · 13/03/2014 14:52

TheBeautifulVisit I went to Southfield PNEU School in Halesworth and as it didn't have a kitchen we used to walk to first Baxters and when that closed Edwards for our lunches.

Dawndonnaagain · 13/03/2014 14:57

I go to Halesworth twice a week to collect dd from her boyfriend's house! I have spent too much money in Focus in the past, but you should see my slippers! Grin

Butkin · 13/03/2014 14:59

Weare6, We live nr Bury - DD goes to school there - and it is a lovely place to visit and shop in. We actually commute down to West Sussex every weekend because DD's ponies live there. We're always shocked by the poor quality of the roads down there - so rough and potholed through all the villages we travel. I wouldn't say the roads are any quieter up here though - just depends on what time you hit them. The A14 is so important for the region that if it is blocked the whole area can grind to a halt.

Mitchy1nge · 14/03/2014 09:44

if I ever moved away permanently I think I'd miss the fog as much as anything, it was (still is a bit) very impressive this morning

Mitchy1nge · 14/03/2014 10:16

oh I love Orford, I forgot about it, thanks Lottie

what a nice article! I remember one from a year or two back saying that mid suffolk in particular was in the top 10 of best rural areas for its extra 2 hours of sunshine, house prices and so on, I think it was a Halifax home buyer thing

My friend works at Pump Street Bakery. It produces award winning bread!

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 14/03/2014 10:39

waves to fellow suffolkians!
I went on a bike ride through Stowmarket this morning and couldn't believe the fog!
Suffolk is beautiful when you can see it
