ha exwife I did the same move! I love it in ipswich, although the shopping is a bit crap! but I used to live 15 mins from lakeside!
It is very lovely in suffolk I agree :)

Mitchy1nge · 12/03/2014 20:19

Ipswich has such lovely buildings though, if you look up above the shop fronts, I think it's nice. At least there is something approaching a MIX of people there, the bits of Suffolk I mostly frequent are entirely white

I love Woodbridge, there's a really good bookshop there, too!

pointythings · 13/03/2014 09:58

Our archery club is based in Rendlesham Forest just down the road from Sutton Hoo

LottieJenkins · 13/03/2014 10:15

I agree............. I LOVE Suffolk too. I live in a small village with a pub with no bar!! You get served straight from the barrel!! Grin

HesterShaw · 13/03/2014 10:16

I want to be in an archery club in a forest

Mitchy1nge · 13/03/2014 10:19

archery! that is a bit of a schlep for me to bother with stalking you but if it was a bit closer to home I might!

if anyone does find themselves on the A1120 tourist route and needs petrol I can highly recommend turning left at Pettaugh for the Evergreen Garage at Crowfield to experience firsthand why MegBusset's accusations of 'twee' are not entirely unfounded - it IS nice, though, to have the olde worlde service of friendly old man refuelling for you and doing Suffolk Talking Grin

Hester Google NFAS and find a club near you. What I do is field archery and it is always done in a forest. It's the best fun ever and I can thoroughly recommend it. There are quite a few clubs in Suffolk.

HesterShaw · 13/03/2014 10:31

Field archery isn't in a field?

It's GOT to be in a forest or I simply won't consider it :o

pointythings · 13/03/2014 10:35

It is definitely in a forest. Having trees and bracken and fallen logs and shit is what makes it interesting. Imagine walking the trail, coming past a stand of trees and seeing a crocodile perched on a log in front of you. You don't know how far it is, you have to assess that yourself. You get three shots, each successive attempt gets you fewer points and if your first hits, you don't take shots 2 and 3. The trees and the light mean you are easily deceived as to what the distance actually is. It's fun.

Oh, and the crocodile is made of specialist foam rubber, obviously. Bowhunting is illegal in the UK for very good reasons. We also have dinosaurs, a 5 foot cobra, an elephant, a baboon and a giant mosquito. Among very many others. We do killer food at very reasonable prices too and have equipment to loan for people wanting to try the sport.

HesterShaw · 13/03/2014 10:40

It sounds SO COOL
I've just found a club near St Ives.

TheBeautifulVisit · 13/03/2014 10:45

I'm from Suffolk. I miss the huge skies.

but don't you find it has more than its fair share of really dim people?

HesterShaw · 13/03/2014 10:45

You should come to Cornwall...

TheBeautifulVisit · 13/03/2014 10:47

Yes, Browsers bookshop is lovely (and isn't there a little browsers?). I have no idea how it has survived Amazon.

TheBeautifulVisit · 13/03/2014 10:47

Hester - I've never actually Ben to Cornwall. Grin

TheBeautifulVisit · 13/03/2014 10:48

been

I'm in Suffolk too, a few miles inland from Southwold, Dunwich etc and surrounded by lots of pretty villages.

Our favourite pub for food is probably The Fox and Goose in Fressingfield but the food at the Middleton Bell is also lovely. So many to choose from.

Can't beat a walk along Southwold prom on a sunny Sunday.

dim people, yes, it's probably the historical consanguinity isn't it, now there is at least a bit of movement in the population and we are doing our best to mate with as many outsiders as possible (I'm proud to be doing more than my share of this) I think it might change Grin

Oops, double post sorry Wink

Went for a week's holiday in Suffolk with the ex ten years ago. Stayed near Saxmundham. LOVED the area - wandering down leafy lanes, visiting Orford, Southwold, Dunwich, Thorpeness, Aldeburgh. Was a boiling hot summer. Sigh. I really need to go back.

Conversely, two years later went to Norfolk and aside from Holt and Cley-Next-The-Sea, couldn't understand the fuss about it.

pointythings · 13/03/2014 11:19

Hester get out there and contact them, you won't regret it!

Mitchy I am a pesky immigrant and so is DH so between us we may have contributed to the gene pool in a positive way...

TheBeautifulVisit · 13/03/2014 12:25

footphobic - ah you sound as though you live where I come from. I had a lovely childhood. Apart from once when I was 15, cycling back from Southwold one summer's evening, at around 9pm. A car stopped (near Blyford), the driver (man) beckoned me over with a map on his lap then as I leaned into the car, he removed the map to reveal an erect penis and started masturbating. Ugh. I don't know why, but I always thought he was probably from Norfolk. Grin

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 13/03/2014 12:28

I love Suffolk, have romantic ideas of retiring there. I love Southwold, Dunwich but my fav has to be Thorpeness with the house in the clouds.

dottygamekeeper · 13/03/2014 12:43

Mitchy, you can see my house as you drive along the A1120 (though we are not on the main road we have views across the rolling hills (by Suffolk standards) towards it...and I was at Evergreen only last week, chatting to everyone! I do love having someone put the fuel in the car, and fill up my cans for the lawnmower/chainsaw etc and lift them back into the boot for me.

Waves to all MNetters in Fram/Woodbridge vicinity - Little Browsers has closed in Woodbridge, and been amalgamated into the main Browsers (which has lost its coffee shop to make room).

Betty, was in Thorpeness a couple of weeks ago and the revamped cafe next to the carpark (not the one by the Mere) is brilliant if you have a dog - every table had a dog with its owners (I know there was a recent thread moaning about dogs in cafes, but as the owner of a well behaved dog I love cafes where dogs are welcomed, it really adds something to the walk!)

Although we live in Suffolk, I also love Norfolk - we spend a lot of holidays in Wells Next the Sea, walking and cycling round Holkham, Walsingham etc
